Norm Cahill and Nagambie Primary School awarded top honours at Tennis Victoria Champions Dinner 88 year old, Norm Cahill has claimed a memorable win at the Tennis Victoria Champions Dinner by being named 2019 Victorian Spirit of Tennis. A prestigious award with a rich history, the award has been presented to the likes of Frank Sedgman (1980), Judy Dalton (1984), Peter McNamara (1989), John Cain (2017) and last year’s winners

the Peers Family (Elizabeth, Bill, John and Sally). Good friend of eight-time grand slam champion, Ken Rosewall, Norm has spent more than half his life playing, coaching and mentoring thousands of tennis players. He continues to coach at the Nagambie Primary School and plays a pivotal role in their sessions on court, firmly epitomising tennis’ status as a sport for life. The feel good story was made even better with the Nagambie Primary School crowned Most Outstanding School award.

The community Voice caught up with Nagambie Primary School Principal, Rob French. “We were so very proud to be shortlisted as one of three school finalists and even prouder to win the award. Our application was based around participation, community, being active & healthy and sport as an avenue for personal development. The award is a great acknowledgment of our students’ enjoyment of tennis in the yard, as a PE activity and our Monday coaching group with Norm. It is also an acknowledgement of the Nagambie Tennis Club as they go out

of their way to make their facilities available to us free of charge.” “Sitting with Norm and Bernice (Cahill) and seeing how much they enjoyed the awards evening, was such a highlight for me. Norm has played a huge part in our school winning this award. Norm teaches more than tennis, he teaches the etiquette of tennis - good sportspersonship, good manners, ‘great shot, well played’, shaking hands and that tennis is a great avenue for life long friendships,” Rob added. Continued on page 2.

2 | THE COMMUNITY VOICE | ISSUE 436 World Tennis Victoria CEO, Ruth Holdaway MBE, was thrilled to see the winners acknowledged for the amazing impact they have had on the Victorian tennis community. “We also surprised a superb coach, Norman Cahill, presenting him with the Victorian Spirit of Tennis Award. His contribution to Victorian tennis is astounding. We can’t thank Norm enough for his unwavering dedication to grassroots tennis,” Ruth said. Rob French described the moment that Norm was announced as the winner of the ‘Victorian Spirit of Tennis’. “The evening host, Todd Woodbridge started the introduction, without mentioning names and then all of a sudden photos of Norm coaching our kids at the Nagambie Tennis Club appeared on the huge screens and Bernice is saying – ‘Norm, they are talking about you!’ The look on Norm and Bernice’s face was priceless. Norm collected the award and was interviewed by Todd Woodbridge and as usual Norm was very entertaining with his stories, including one about the day (when he was 18) that he almost beat Ken Rosewall!” Winners of the Victorian Tennis Awards have now been nominated for the Australian Tennis Awards, with finalists for the categories to be named then announced very soon.

"We love getting out to the regional communities, and they always welcome us with open arms - this funding is going to make a big impact in 'fighting the beast' - we are going

to get it working as quickly as possible in medical research and clinical trials across Australia and worldwide,'" said Rebecca. Day Two of the famous Daniher's Drive accelerated into the swing of things with a golf fundraiser, with a temporary driving range set up on Lake Nagambie. The convoy of cars arrived in Nagambie around 3 pm with many eager participants lining up to test their skill and luck. No-one hit the target but some lucky hitters walked away with a bottle of GoNagambie Shiraz. With over 80 cars and 320 participants on the road, the regional towns of Victoria have opened their arms to FightMND. More than 2,000 people are currently diagnosed with MND in Australia, but there is no known cure or treatment. Nagambie road users will see Marie Street, between High Street northbound and High Street southbound, return back to a two way intersection from Friday 25th October.

Phil Howard said the one-way flow was implemented as the approved plan included the provision of bus parking in Marie Street and continued angled parking along Jacobsons Outlook, but this plan has since changed.

The petition was presented to Council in May and after discussions with VicRoads and Victoria Police, Council has resolved to revert Marie Street back to two way traffic.

“The reduction in speed limit from 60kph to 40kph and the removal of angle parking along High Street adjacent to the intersection, combined with the changed location of the bus parking has allowed Council to make the decision to revert Marie Street back to two-way traffic,” Mr Howard explained. “Due to these factors, VicRoads and Victoria Police have supported this decision.”

NEW BOAT RAMP AND FREE BOAT LAUNCHING FOR USERS OF GOULBURN RIVER Strathbogie Shire Council today opened the new deep water boat ramp at the Goulburn River, providing better and safer access to the waterways for boating and fishing. The new boat ramp will provide free 24-hour access to the river, including new car and trailer parking, and was officially opened with Katherine Grech, the Director of Better Boating Victoria. The $494,795 project included a $100,000 contribution from Council, a $100,000 donation of the cost of the land from the Ryan family and a contribution of $294,795 from Department of Transport.

This comes after a recent announcement of the abolition of boat ramp fees at the Nagambie Lakes and Goulburn River, as part of the Labor Government’s investment in boating and fishing across the state. Strathbogie Shire Mayor Amanda McClaren said the new boat ramp will be a game changer for both locals and visitors to Nagambie. “Nagambie Lakes and Goulburn River is enjoyed by boaters and anglers as well as host to a number of sporting events, holding over 20 major events and competitions each year,” Mayor McClaren said. “The new boat ramp will allow for direct access to the Goulburn River when the lake is closed for events, which will now provide ongoing entry

for the public to enjoy the waterways.” “The deep water boat ramp will better position Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre to attract and retain more large scale events and competitions.” The Hon. Jaclyn Symes MLC, Minister for Regional Development said the boat ramp is another great investment in regional tourism. “Nagambie Lakes is a terrific food and wine tourism destination and this great new boat ramp gives people yet another reason to visit the region,” Minister Symes said. “Getting rid of parking and launching fees is a massive win for all Victorian families who can now enjoy more affordable boating and fishing this season.”

HISTORIAN TO SPEAK AT NAGAMBIE LIBRARY The Battle of Polygon Wood took place in September 1917. Award winning historian and biographer Dr Ross McMullin will be presenting an absorbing and illuminating talk on Disaster Into Triumph: The Battle of Polygon Wood at Nagambie Library on Saturday 9 November 2019. Dr McMullin’s main research interests are Australia’s role in World War 1, Australian political history and Australian sporting history. He has researched and written extensively on the impact on Australia of the country’s involvement in the First World War. His books include biographies of Pompey Elliott, the celebrated commander in World War 1, and

Farewell, Dear People: Biographies of Australia’s Lost Generation, which was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History and the National Cultural Award. At Polygon Wood, an iconic battle at the Western Front, Australian soldiers turned looming defeat into stunning victory. Perceptions of the battle, and how it unfolded, have been flawed for decades. A lively, engaging and entertaining speaker, Dr Ross McMullin will explain what really happened. Dr Ross McMullin will be speaking at Nagambie Library, 352 High Street, Nagambie, at 2.00pm on Saturday 9 November 2019. For bookings, please phone Nagambie Library on 1300 374 765 or email nagambie@gvrlc.vic.gov.au by Thursday 7 November 2019.

'HOT-G' RETURNS, HEAD OF THE GOULBURN 7.2K RACE IN ITS 14TH YEAR. It is that time of the year when things start ‘hotting-up’ in the District, coming up to Christmas and the New Year. Daylight Savings is also upon us, which signals an influx of visitors looking to enjoy all our wonderful area has to offer. Saturday the 26th of October, 2019, is such a day, with the 14th running of the Head Of The Goulburn rowing regatta. The race from Chinamans Bridge to Tahbilk Winery is 7.2 kilometres long and is the only known rowing regatta in the world, that finishes at a winery! Perhaps not such a good idea you say, however a well-earned glass or two, good food and ‘live’ music seem a pretty

civilised way to celebrate completing a tough event. Last years event attracted 172 boats, which was made up of single sculls, quad sculls, fours and eights. Boats that are sculling action have two smaller oars per rower, with fours and eights being ‘sweep’ boats or as I refer to them, “slave boats”. These have one oar per rower and it is much larger than the sculling blade. Rowing Secretary again this year is Nagambie’s Rowing coach, Sue Andrews. Sue says she would like to keep, what is one of Australia’s premier ‘Head’ or distance races, evolving, whilst serving the rowers, spectators and wider community. This year in a first will be a new Commentator, Linda Skidmore.

Linda has a long and successful association with rowing, both here and overseas, and has been the ‘starter’ for this years Winter Sculling Series, that saw over 150 boats take off at short intervals. Many senior school children attend the regatta and the coaches see this event as not only a good start to the upcoming racing season, but a chance for students to row and bond together. As Liquor Licensing Laws are not in favour of under 18’s partaking in the delights which Tahbilk have to offer, this year the schools will be off first at 10am. This will allow them to finish up early and move on to more suitable surrounds. A reminder for waterway users that

the river with be officially closed from Scours Bridge to Tahbilk Winery, between 9am and 2pm. This has been done in conjunction with the Shire to ensure the safety and smooth running of the event, and reduce inconvenience to other watercraft. We trust that this does not impact too much on the local community. It would also be very much appreciated if ‘boaties’ coming into close vicinity of the rowers, give them due consideration, regarding speed and distance. Have a G8 Day, cheers, Dave Andrews, NRC Masters Rower. Tickets for the High Tea and Auction will be on sale via Eventbrite.

QUEENS4QUEENS - THE GIFT OF GIVING Four years strong. From little things big things grow. Queens4Queens is a community initiative run out of Nagambie since 2016 that focuses on assisting women and children in crisis and supports them via collection of items of personal toiletries and other essential items. During its yearly campaign items are collected, sorted and donated to Beyond Housing- Seymour (formally Rural Housing Victoria) to distribute to women in need locally. In this way they know that the items are going back into the local Community. The project started small with a group of ladies who played social netball deciding to give back to their Community. Inspired by the National “Share the Dignity” initiative they wanted to do something locally and from that seed Queens4Queens was born. As more and more local women embraced the idea of community giving the project grew. Queens4Queens first campaign ran for 10 weeks in late 2016

and resulted in the gifting of forty-five handbags full of sanitary and personal items - donated from the generosity of local woman - to Rural HousingSeymour to distribute locally. To date Queens4Queens has donated well over 150 ‘Queen Bags’ full of toiletries and other personal items to women and children of the Strathbogie and Mitchell Shires via Beyond Housing. Representatives from Beyond Housing have stated the “Queen Bags” are much appreciated by their clients and can cause an emotional response. In many instances these are women who through no fault have found themselves in dire circumstances and are used to putting themselves last. Due to the amazing positive response and after further discussions with Beyond Housing we are continuing our yearly Queens campaign. The current Queens4Queeens campaign will run until early to mid-November 2019 and all items will be collated and donated to Beyond Housing just in time for Christmas.

The focus again is on personal toiletries such as sanitary items, shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant etc. Queens4Queens states “like new” makeup bags are another item they are after this year. These are very often promo items with makeup items and sit in the cupboard so if you have any spare the Queens would love to have them. They are then filled with travel basics (mini shampoo, conditioner, soap and lip balm) and placed in the Queen Bags. Queens4Queens has also branched out and also creates kiddie bags. For the young ones kiddie sensitive shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, toothbrushes and kiddie toothpaste is a great start. Every donation does count. So if you’d like to donate check your bathroom cupboard for unused toiletry treasures or alternatively pop something extra into the trolley next time you’re at the local Supermarket and you can assist a local Queen in need.

to drop off as well. And if you’re crafty feel free to assist with the bag making. Queens4Queens recycles whenever it can and works with Boomerang bags to recycle pillowcases and donated cloth. Another way to help is assist with the ‘Pick n Pack’ working bee November when the Queen and Kiddie bags are created. Each bag contains a list of items and an anonymous note of encouragement. This year toiletries, personal items and make up bags can be dropped of at two locations in Nagambie 23a Nash Street (verandah) and at the Nagambie Community House – 7 Prentice Street Nagambie. Look for the drop off containers which are clearly labelled at both locations. A full list of items suitable for donation and a link to a pattern for the Queenie bags can be found on the Facebook page Queens4Queens or you can contact 0488887426 for further details.

Queens4Queens is more than happy for people to create their own ‘Queen Bags’

and begins CPR before we arrive it doubles the person’s chance of survival.”

Paramedics will be holding CPR displays at Nagambie Primary School and a Mums and Bubs session on Wednesday, 16 October.

Norieul said the event was part of Restart a Heart Day (Wednesday October 16), a worldwide campaign to encourage people to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

“A cardiac arrest happens when someone’s heart stops beating,” said Ambulance Victoria Nagambie Paramedic Community Support Coordinator Norieul Kinross. “We know that if a bystander steps in

He said 16 Victorians suffer cardiac arrest each day, and only one in 10 survive.“Minutes matter in cardiac arrest, and the sooner a person receives CPR and the application of a defibrillator, the better their chances of

survival. “Bystanders are the critical first link in the chain of survival and can help keep patients alive before our highly-trained paramedics arrive.” Norieul said people with first-aid training can help to save lives by downloading the GoodSAM Responder app, which alerts responders to a nearby suspected cardiac arrest and the location of the nearest AED. “We recently expanded GoodSAM, so that any adult with first-aid training can be alerted to a nearby cardiac arrest.

“Often these volunteer responders reach a patient before paramedics, and their intervention in those early minutes can help save a life. GoodSAM Responders are never alone. An alert is only sent by the Triple Zero (000) call taker once a health emergency is assessed as safe and appropriate for a GoodSAM Responder to assist. “I encourage anyone who has a first aid qualification to download the GoodSAM App on their smartphone, sign up and support the Nagambie community.”

It is very rare for twin sisters to be living close to one another in their senior years, but our Nagambie Kelvingrove Village pair of twins Robyn Spinner and Susanne Gray are doing just that. Living close to each other still In fact they are only about 100 metres away from each other, with husbands Noel and Alan and most of their lives they have lived close to each other as well.

Edric had his son and family visit over the weekend, and Bec said they had a lovely Birthday dinner last night (Thursday, 17 October, and plenty of smiles in photos. Edric’s other daughters and their families came up last weekend for more celebrations.

The twins celebrated their 70th joint birthday with their families at Mitchelton over the weekend of 2-3 February this year.

Celebrating 94 years of age on a lake Nagambie boat cruise. Was Edric Graham, with his daughter Rebecca Baker and Grandson Campbell Baker.

Robyn and Susanne Shaw were born on 5th February 1949 and what is also unique, is that 20 years later, they had a double wedding on 1st November 1969. They made the Herald Sun news that week. They will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary together with their husbands on November 1st, but will have a party celebration on November 9th at the Gray’s daughter Kerry’s place in Croydon. Sue and Alan Gray moved to Kelvingrove in 2009, and Robyn and Noel Spinner came in 2010.

SHORT STORY ON THE TWO COUPLES Robyn and Susanne Shaw were born to parents

Dorothy and Reginald Shaw on 5th February 1949 at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Carlton in Melbourne. Reg was a baker and Dot a tailoress. Reg had served in the army. The twins had two sisters Sally and Carolyn. Robyn and Sue come from a long line of twins running in their father Reginald Shaw’s family. (3 sets so far.) The family lived in Olinda on the top of the Dandenong Ranges until the twins were 12 years of age. They attended the Olinda Primary School, which was housed in a single building, with all the grades in together. Sue remembers having warm bottles of milk there. The girls loved the times it snowed up on the mountain area. The twins would take it in turns to walk in the heavy snow in their gum boots to give their father his dinner at the bakery around 5.30pm. He worked long hours at his family business. Their mum said it was good she had twins as it meant them taking turns to help out; or else it would be left to one to do it each day. Sue remembers the wood fires in the bakery and having hot rolls with butter there after school. Tip Top bought the bakery and the family moved to Ringwood. Where the girls attended the Ringwood High School and completed their Intermediate certificate level. The girls were confirmed in their local Church

of England and Robyn remembers them both fainting in church one day which was unusual. It was at High school that Sue (14 or so) met a young Alan Gray at a social in 1964, in a Ladies choice dance. He had his wrist in plaster. He went on to work as a planning officer with Holeproof in Ringwood. Then guess what? The twins ventured off to both work in the Gas and Fuel Department’s Flinders Street building as ledger machinists on the first floor. There were three sets of twins who worked at the Gas Company in that time. When the company moved to Princes Gate Robyn and Sue did too. Robyn met Noel Spinner when she was 17 and he was 21. He lived in Brunswick and she in Ringwood. They met when her family was holidaying at Yarrawonga. He was an apprentice mill machinist. Robyn and Noel courted for three and a half years and became engaged on 27th March 1968.

NICE DAY FOR A DOUBLE WEDDING Alan and Sue became engaged on 7th October 1967 and married in a double wedding alongside Robyn and Noel on 1st November 1969 at the Ringwood Methodist Church, under the rites of the Church of England by Reverend D.Chalmers. (The Anglican Church was being renovated.) Their mother made all the ladies gowns and their father baked their wedding cakes which their mother decorated. In July 1971, Alan and Sue moved to Papua New Guinea (PNG) for six months. Alan found work with the Education Department and Sue was a typist on the first electoral

roll there. Sue said though, mostly, the couples have lived near to each other and spent many years of their married life in the suburbs of Croydon, Kilsyth, Mooroolbark until coming here to Nagambie.

FAMILY LIFE You often hear of twins experiencing things together. Well, when Sue was in PNG, she felt a bad pain in her back. It was when Robyn was giving birth to her daughter Colleen in 1971 Sue received word from Oz that Robyn had given birth that day. What a special moment to share together. Robyn and Noel have two children Colleen (1971) and Mark (1973), and Alan and Sue also have two – Michelle (1972) and Kerry (1977.) Their children and partners have blessed them with three grand children each. The sisters started work at the same place and ended their working lives at the same day care centre (crèche.) Robyn worked there from 1996 to 2005 approximately 9 Years and Sue started a year before her. Then they moved to Nagambie with Noel and Alan. The twins and husbands have loved having family holidays and camping trips together for many years. Thanks Sue and Alan and Robyn and Noel for sharing your story with us and congratulations on the celebration of your double 50th wedding anniversary.

WHATEVER YOU GROW, WILL SAVE A BRO! Local bloke Reg Dickinson has been involved in the Movember movement since it first started in 2004. Back then however, he was only growing a moustache and on a personal level trying to raise awareness for all things related to men’s health. For the past two years, Reg has taken his involvement to the next level and this November, the informal “Go Men” group he is part of, are instigating three different activities with the hopes of raising awareness and money for the cause. But what is Reg’s motivation and inspiration? And what are his thoughts on men talking about their health; about their feelings and fears? Read on to learn more about how bravery can take many different shapes and expressions…

Top Pub and Profile Fabric.

all these changes are immensely positive…”

or a woman; everyone is welcome!

If that first coffee between a few friends was what kick started it all, what has kept Reg himself going? What inspires him to continue instigating different activities like ‘the Big Mow Off ’, ‘the Pub to Pub walk’ and this year, the Men’s Breakfast at the Royal Mail Hotel? “To be honest", Reg explains with a smile, “I kind of feel like an unwilling leader; like I’ve been thrust into it a bit, but I was probably also motivated by personal reasons... A couple of close family members have struggled with depression and then you keep hearing about it, reading about it and I just feel like I should try and do something; show support in whatever way I can.”

“You can also look at some of the sporting heroes of today as they announce their retirement and they are in tears, showing their emotions on TV. I remember when Kim Hughes resigned as the Australian Cricket Captain more than 30 years ago; he was crying too, but was regarded a sook and was even bullied. I think he was the first man that was seen crying publicly, and thank God that’s changed, - we’ve changed. Perhaps we are still a work in progress, but we are learning to empathise more… Learning to not be afraid of lowering our guard and showing our emotions. Having grandchildren probably helps; we can stand back and see things more clearly…

PUB TO PUB WALK 10/11, start at the Top Pub

“It wasn’t really my idea to begin with”, Reg starts explaining when we meet up at the Community House for a chat. “I was having coffee with some of the blokes and we were just talking when someone suggested we could try and raise money for the hospital. Then the idea grew amongst half a dozen of us and it just went on from there…” The first year, the group managed to raise $2000 and last year a whopping $3000 was accumulated with great support from different local businesses such as Paul and Emilia at the

Although times have surely changed in the last few decades, it is still rather common that men feel awkward talking about their health, whether it is their mental or physical health. I had to ask Reg for his thoughts on the topic… “Perhaps it is the way we were raised”, he starts out. “We were told not to be sooks, and to ‘just get on with it’. ‘You’re the man, you’ve got to be strong, be this and be that.’ Now, that’s changed a hell of a lot though. You look at young men today; the way they share in the raising of children, feeding, changing nappies, taking their turn during the night. That was just unheard of back when my kids were small. And I think

WALK TO SCHOOL

Hi everyone,

During Sustainability this term, we will be taking small groups on a “walking classroom” to promote the Walk to School program which we are participating in this month. We will be talking about the benefits of walking (health, environment, cheaper than fuel etc), history and modes of transport, and the walkability of our town (accessible footpaths, lighting etc). On Friday, we measured our walk by using a measuring wheel and counting our steps. All together, we walked a total of 45,000 steps. How many steps do you walk each day? We challenge you to get walking!

I’m very excited to write for the Community Voice this week while Mr French is in Melbourne for the Victorian Tennis Awards. Nagambie Primary School is a finalist for the ‘Most Outstanding School’ award. I really hope Nagambie PS, Mr French and Mr Norm Cahill win and the award is some tennis balls; I love them! What a great week at school this week! I got to see Jessie, a paramedic from Ambulance Victoria, who was at school for ‘Restart a Heart’ Day. Jessie always gives me pats, which is awesome. More importantly though, she taught all of our students some vital First Aid Skills and what to do to help restart a heart. I had a great time with the Preps during Investigation time on Wednesday. I played with the dominoes, Mrs Vraca’s toy animals (the dinosaurs were scary) and Cooper (pictured) drew a fabulous picture of Mrs F and I. The Preps are great and play so nicely together. MENS SHED

DOES YOUR FAMILY DESERVE THIS?

Having a problem with Myna Birds? Want to solve the problem? Visit the men’s shed at 33 Filson St for a solution. The members are always busy make summer outdoor furniture, doing community projects and work for individuals. These take a lot of planning so there is always time for a coffee or tea. Can’t rush into these things! We are very thankful to the premises that collect their cans for us. This creates some income to keep us afloat. Never found a full one yet! The Men’s Shed BBB (Big Blue BBQ) will be in action during the summer months. This coming Friday it will be outside Taurus Meats in High St, burning the sausages supplied by Taurus. Hope they don’t lose business! Hopefully we will able to do other functions as requested. - David

NAGAMBIE CRICKET CLUB The opening round of the Shepparton Cricket Association was a case of nearly but not quite. The A Grade side played Tatura at home. Due to the lengthy delay the match was abandoned and declared a draw. Matty Martin dominated proceedings with a rapid fire 60 runs which included 9 boundaries and a six, Luke Nolan compiled 42 whilst Zac Winter Irving 32 and Brayden Biggs 20 both remained not out. The C Grade team travelled to Numurkah and amassed 4 for 167. Blair Taylor Lloyd smashed 80 and Will Ulrich remained 43 not out.
