Welcome to the Autumn issue of the North East Tourist News 2016 THERE are few better places to enjoy autumn than right here in the North East. Whether it’s meandering along the leafy streets of beautiful Bright, or soaking up the mild and crisp autumn weather at a winery, café or even a leafy public park, this season is a great time to appreciate all that this region offers. The autumn months are also a time when the region is showcased with a diverse selection of festivals, highlighting everything from music to food, wine, and produce. Some of the dazzling array of local festivals include the Beechworth’s Golden Horseshoes festival, the Bright Autumn Festival, and Tastes of Rutherglen. The region’s beautiful lakes, rivers, fabulous mountain walks and premier cycle rail trails also come into their own at this time of year. It’s always a good idea to drop into your local visitor information centre for helpful advice on upcoming events and other opportunities to maximise your stay. Jeff Zeuschner GROUP EDITOR

AROUND THE REGION
Heritage spotlight on Chiltern IN April 2016 Chiltern Tourism & Development is partnering with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to help launch the Trusts’ Heritage Festival 2016. The Heritage Festival is part of the NTAV 60th anniversary celebrations in 2016. The 60th anniversary presents opportunities to particularly celebrate and exploit connections, anniversaries and vintages from the 1950s. In 2016 the theme for the Heritage Festival will be discoveries and rediscoveries. The event will be co-presented and co-branded NTAV and Chiltern Tourism and Development Inc Heritage Festival (Discoveries & Rediscoveries) and held on Saturday, April 16. The event will be based in Chiltern with as many local heritage properties and history groups involved as possible. This will include the promotion of the historic town of Chiltern and the three National Trust owned properties located in the town. Chiltern Tourism & Development is inviting all service clubs, sporting bodies, essential services and individuals to organise their own “back to” celebration on this weekend under the brand – Come Home to Chiltern. If you are planning a family re-union Chiltern Tourism & Development may be able to assist there too. But organisers need as many people as possible to ‘come home to Chiltern’ on that weekend. Find out more by telephoning the Visitor Information Centre on (03) 57261611.
NEW BEGINNINGS: The newly relocated Tallangatta, as seen from the air in the late 1950s.
The town that moved is moving ahead
PLENTY of Aussies have made sacrifices to make our nation great - but few have given up their entire town in the name of progress. That’s what Tallangatta in North East Victoria did almost 60 years ago, and now the Town That Moved is looking to the future to make the “new” town even more appealing for locals and visitors alike. By 1956, Old Tallangatta relocated as Lake Hume expanded to support downstream irrigation. Some of the old houses were moved on flatbed trucks to the new town site 9km away, but the shopping precinct and many public facilities were built anew. Tallangatta is a model 1950s town nestled in a lush valley with wide streets clustered around the new shopping strip and a large park. It’s on the shores of Lake Hume, a mecca for boating, fishing and watersports, less than 30 minutes from Albury-Wodonga and close to the
snow, high country and food, wine and tourism attractions that make the North East great. This year, on the 60th anniversary of Tallangatta’s relocation, Towong Shire mayor David Wortmann says there are ongoing projects, including the recently funded Destination Tallangatta, helping give the town a new lease on life. The Destination Tallangatta project will refresh the main street and CBD, upgrade the lakefront and holiday park and connect the rail trail, the CBD and Tallangatta Lookout. Funding for the $5.33 million project has come from local traders, project partners and the Federal Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. “Destination Tallangatta will create 100 full-time jobs during construction and 51 ongoing full-time jobs,” Cr Wortmann said. “Tallangatta can then sit beside other tourist centres in our region like Bright,Beechworth and Rutherglen showcasing the North East as a great place to live and work.” The project will be completed over the next four years, with planned works aimed at having minimal disruption for residents and visitors. For more information on the many fun things to do in and around Tallangatta, see www.towong. vic.gov.au.

Decadent delights await at Morris Wines ANYONE looking to sample truly sumptuous food, paired with equally tempting wine, is invited to drop in to Morris Wines during this year’s Tastes of Rutherglen event, taking place on March 12-13. For this year’s event, Geoffrey Michael has created a truly decadent dessert to tempt those with a sweet tooth. The dessert combines strawberry cremeux, salted caramel, strawberry and chardonnay jelly, honeycomb, milk chocolate shantilly and topaque gel to create a sweet taste sensation for the tastebuds. The resulting creation is then paired with Morris Wines’ Cellar One Topaque. Not only will visitors to the winery be able to sample these sweet treats, they are also set to be entertained by Mt Beauty based duo The Royce Twins. Established in 1859, Morris Wines has housed five generations of family winemakers and its many varieties continually win praise from critics and wine buffs alike. Morris Wines is located at 154

Be careful with wine IN a recent IPSOS study conducted by Taylors Wines, 8 out of 10 Australians are drinking their red wine ‘at room temperature’. While this may seem like normal behaviour, our warm Australian climate is actually having a negative impact on the flavour of our favourite shiraz, pinot noir or cabernet sauvignon. The temperature of an average Aussie home ranges between 22C-24C, and according to industry experts, including the Court of Master Sommeliers, serving a red wine at this temperature robs it of its finesse and flavour. This antiquated advice of drinking
red wine at ‘room temperature’ originates from medieval French drawing rooms which were closer to a chilly 14C-16C. White wine isn’t exempt from the harsh Australian sun either. While nothing may seem more refreshing than a crisp glass of riesling poured straight from the fridge, chilling a white wine too cold can mask its flavours and aromas, making its acid flavours more pronounced. To find out more about the optimum temperature to enjoy your wine purchases, feel free to consult the cellar door staff while you are visiting wineries in the North East.

His legacy will continue to live on, with his son Terry making wine in his own right, daughter Anna operating the winery and overseeing marketing and sales, and the winery now producing 27 varieties of wine bearing the Monichino name. These varieties include Italian varieties, fortified wines, and much more to cater for every palate. The Dookie Wine Show, held last September, saw the 2012 Monichino chardonnay win best in its class, the fourth time in a row the variety had achieved that feat. The chardonnay is described as a full bodied, rich and enticing chardonnay, boasting lush American oak and vanilla aromas with burnt honey, melon and peach flavours on the palate. Recent months also saw the opening of the new Café Tramontino at Cellar Door.
Boasting a modern European menu created from local ingredients, the café is run by executive chef Ryan Gibson, who has lived and worked in France and Europe, as well as in the Goulburn Valley. The coming months see some enticing events being held at Monichino Wines. A Farmgate to Plate degustation dinner will be held on Saturday, March 12, with the winery working in conjunction with Moira Shire and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival to showcase a magnificent menu with matching premium Monichino Wines. Bookings for the dinner can be made at www. melbournefoodandwine.com.au. Monichino Wines cellar door, located at Berrys Road, Katunga, is open for tastings from 9am-
5pm Monday-Friday, and 10am-5pm SaturdaySunday. Café Tramontino onsite is open from 11.30am3pm from Wednesday-Sunday. To find out more about Monichino Wines and their upcoming events, contact the winery on (03) 58646452 or see their website at www. monichino.com.au.

Antiques and Collectables Fair a great drawcard THE Albury-Wodonga Antiques and Collectables Fair is returning again in 2016 with a host of new professional dealers as well as your old favourites. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, in conjunction with the Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club of Albury-Wodonga, this event has become a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. April 16-17 will see the Mirambeena Community Centre at Lavington transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the fair. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to 20 different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and
European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is also a fundraiser for Antiques Fair Committee and The Zonta Club of Albury-Wodonga who will be providing delicious light lunches as well as morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is open to the public from 10am until 5pm on Saturday, April 16

AUTHORITIES are reminding trail bike riders to ride safely, stick to legal riding areas, and steer clear of rail trails and walking tracks. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s (DELWP) trail bike project manager Roger Pitt said: “Trail bike riding is increasingly popular in the Hume Region, but riders must remember that in forests and parks motorcycles can only be used on formed roads and vehicle tracks. “Rail trails and walking tracks are not designed for motorbikes as their surface and drainage can be easily damaged and motorbike riders are a hazard to others using the trails,â€? Mr Pitt said. “It’s also an offence in forests and parks to ride off-road on informal tracks and the natural terrain because of the environmental damage it causes. “In addition, if you are unlicensed or your bike is unregistered you are only allowed to ride on private land or at motorcycle club tracks. “It’s a good idea for parents to enrol young riders in a club so they have somewhere to ride and get some safe riding instruction.â€? Celebration of high country brewers BRIDGE Road Brewers are excited to announce the 2nd annual High Country Hops Festival, a celebration of Victoria’s high country brewers and the 2016 hop harvest. Now in its second year this young high country event brings together like minded craft brewers and the local growers of that all important brewing ingredient, hops. This family friendly festival is a celebration of hops, but also features local food producers, musicians, performers, children’s activities and even a chance to try your hand at some archery. The festival will be bringing together the four brewers of the high country brewery trail – Black Dog Brewery, Bridge Road Brewers, Bright Brewery and Sweetwater Brewing Company - as well as Rutherglen Brewery who will be offering beer away from their home. The high country brewers all share strong links with each other and with our local hop growers. Peter Hull from Sweetwater Brewing in Mount Beauty said last year’s event was “one of the highlights of 2015 for our brewery…a fun day in the grounds of Bridge Road Brewers which showcased the breweries and beers of the high country brewery trail, celebrated the great hops grown in our region and truly captured the spirit of the trail”. James Booth of Black Dog Brewery in Taminick says the event is “a great day out for the high country breweries involved and

punters alike, fantastic atmosphere and good vibes to celebrate our high country brewery trail and the awesome hops that are grown in our neck of the woods.” Hop Products Australia will again support the event, offering a hop knowledge stand at the event explaining what hops are, and how they are grown and processed. Milawa Cheese and Gundowring
Ice Cream will again be featured local producers providing some great local products to compliment the beer and the festivities. Entertainment for all will be provided by up and coming local Beechworth artist Liv Cartledge, (livcartledge.com.au) and the little ones will be entertained by Trixie the clown and unlimited time on the brewery’s own jumping castle.

The Gertrude Hotel will again be organising a bus from “the Big Smoke” to join in the action and enquiries can be made on (03) 94192823. Tourism promotion through your photos A picture is worth a thousand words, as the saying generally goes. Indigo Shire Council’s tourism department is now applying this saying to its promotional work with the introduction of social media application Instagram. Instagram allows people to post their own photos for people to see and share. Tourism manager Clayton Neil said the department had established #beechworth which would collect photos and images relevant to Indigo Shire. “Sometimes a great photo can have a much stronger impact on someone when they are looking for somewhere to visit for a weekend away and longer holiday,” Mr Neil said. “We recently met with a group of local prolific ‘Instagrammers’ to discuss their inspirations and how they use their images. “From this has grown a community that we hope will continue to grow to showcase all that is unique and engaging in Indigo Shire. “Photos of food and wine, quirky retail outlets, history, cycling, natural landscapes, trails and community events - all very welcome additions to #beechworth. “So if you are out and about with your camera and capture a special photo of Indigo Shire, please use

Diverse mix of performers in Yackandandah IT’S that time of year again to get out those dancing shoes, pack up the family and make your way to beautiful Yackandandah in North East Victoria for the 19th Annual Yackandandah Folk Festival to be held from Friday, March 18 through to Sunday, March 20. A host of international acts are scheduled to perform throughout the weekend, supplemented by a strong contingent of local and national artists. With such a diverse mix of performers on hand, there is sure to be something which will appeal to even the most discerning music fans throughout the weekend. The festival kicks off on the Friday evening with a community parade in the main street, followed by a street concert in aid of local CFA volunteers, who did such a wonderful job of keeping people safe from harm during the recent bushfires which threatened the town.
COMMUNITY FLAVOUR: Local performer Pete Denahy will be at this year’s Yackandandah Folk Festival.
As usual, the unique and very popular Earth Hour Concert on Saturday night will feature music played without using microphones or power of any kind save for lighting provided by solar-charged batteries. Of special significance this year is that the entire festival will be 100 per cent carbon neutral due to the huge
investment in large solar systems on commercial buildings throughout the town. Yack Station, the new arts hub, will feature free workshops and activities aimed specifically at kids during the festival and these are hosted by an artist in residence. Camping facilities have been
increased in size this year with two separate areas now available both within easy walking distance of all festival venues What are you waiting for? For information regarding ticketing, camping and all other enquiries, please visit the festival website at www.yackfolkfestival.com.

Spotlight on Australian art
A HIGHLIGHT on the Bright Art Gallery calendar every year, the gallery’s annual Autumn Exhibition showcases a range of works from some of Australia’s best artists. This year, the exhibition is being held between March 24 and May 4, from 10am-4pm daily. Now in its 54th year, the exhibition is one of Australia’s oldest and best known public art events. The event is set to feature up to 1000 paintings and drawings from some of the country’s best known artists – such as Kasey Sealey, Ross Paterson, Warrick Fuller, Colina Grant and Vida Pearson, to mention just a few. Convenor Steve McCall, the president of the Bright Art Gallery, said the exhibition features high quality work to suit all tastes and budgets, plus jewellery, woodwork and other affordable gift items. Artworks in the exhibition will be judged by accomplished print artist Alicia Marshall of “Winding Road Design Studio”, Bright. For details call the gallery on (03) 57501660 or Mr McCall on (03) 57501074. COLOURFUL: Come to Bright Art Gallery to see a diverse range of art.

Fishing fun in picturesque parkland WITH milder weather and crisper mornings, autumn is an ideal time to do a spot of fishing, or just enjoy relaxing in the shade, at Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm. Established in 1958, the farm was Australia’s first trout farm, and has grown and evolved over the years to become the self sufficient farm it is today on five acres of picturesque parkland. There are a variety of different
ponds including large trout (500g -4kg), medium trout (300-500gm), Atlantic salmon (2kg-5kg) and a challenge lake (lightly stocked). I take thee - to Laura Lodge IF you have ever driven through Bonnie Doon, chances are you have probably noticed Laura Lodge. With lush green hedges, a quaint dam with its summer house and picture perfect white fences, it’s hard to miss. What many don’t realise, however, is that the property is actually known
as Laura Lodge Rest and Recreational Retreat, and is now open to the public for accommodation and functions. Chris and Christina Keilty have worked hard to create a 25 acre oasis just off Maroondah Highway. After more than a decade of work, the Keiltys decided to name it after their daughter, Laura, who christened
the function side of the business by having her wedding on-site. With two dams, three lodges, a boat house and a Leprechaun Lodge for the kids to explore, Laura Lodge is the place to relax with family and friends. Sleeping up to 15 guests across three private lodges, the property is not only ideal for family groups, it
offers the best of both worlds for those wanting to get away – proximity to town and privacy. There is also a large games room, full kitchen and bar, laundry, outdoor gym and, most importantly, spectacular views of Lake Eildon. For more information call 57787770 or email Laura@lauralodge.com.au.

THE 2016 Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide is available at tackle shops across the state and includes important information about catch limits, permitted equipment and closed seasons. Fisheries Victoria executive director, Travis Dowling, said the guide was an important reference booklet that included colour illustrations of commonly caught fish so anglers could identify their catch, and the size and bag limits that apply. “The 2016 guide, which is funded by fishing licence fees, outlines the rules that currently apply and new ones introduced since the previous 2015 version,” Mr Dowling said. ON Easter Saturday every year, the town of Corowa in Southern New South Wales comes alive as the centre of racing action, festival celebrations and family entertainment. Forget the Melbourne Cup or Formula One, the hottest racing action in Australia happens in Corowa annually. The McDonald’s Corowa 2016 Australian Billy Cart Championships is an event for all ages with competitors racing down the main street in their home-made or professionally created designs. Thrills, spills, short pants and scraped knees are the order of the day; the stuff of childhood memories. These days, however, expect the unexpected with designs limited only by the imagination. This annual festival celebrates and showcases the spirit of the earliest form of racing - billy cart racing.

Iconic hotel still going strong
history steeped into the building, the little pub in the bush is an iconic rest stop for visitors and locals alike. With bush timber veranda posts, a beer garden that overlooks the Goulburn River and a dining room that oozes charm, the Kevington Hotel is a not to be missed spot in the Jamieson Valley. Only 10 kilometres past the town of Jamieson on the Woods Point Road, and still on a sealed road, the hotel is run by Wayne and LynMaree Poole.
IF walls could talk, then undoubtedly the Kevington Hotel would have a lot to say. With more than 150 years of
“The Kevington Hotel is living history, Wayne says. “It’s the only example of a hotel built in the 1860s gold rush era that remains standing, so the ambience of the place speaks for itself. Catering for all types and groups, the hotel offers eight rooms and can accommodate up to 28 overnight guests. There is also a large dining room, which boasts metropolitan quality meals. “We have a great menu here, and
we are particularly proud of our lamb racks, chicken mascarpone and our gluten free salmon ďŹ llet.â€? Popular with four wheel drive enthusiasts, trail bike riders, hunters and tourists, the Kevington Hotel is also one of the last resting stops before the famous township of Woods Point. The Kevington Hotel is open seven days a week, early till late. HISTORIC: The Kevington Hotel has plenty of charm.

Retreat to the lake side at Willowlake By RHYLL McCORMACK LIKE an oasis rising out of the desert, Willowlake is an accommodation and function centre set among lush gardens at Macs Cove. Purchased by Anne-Maree Boltong and her family back in 2006, the gorgeous cottages and weatherboard retreat immediately stole her heart. “We were looking for something to buy, a business, and I drove into the drive and said – I don’t care about anything else, I love it,” Mrs Bolton said. Boasting a large restaurant with seating for up to 80, complete with cathedral ceilings, open fireplace and country charm, Willowlake also has a state of the art commercial kitchen and full bar facilities, along with an intimate dining room for smaller guest numbers. Outside, set among the beautiful gardens and creeping wisteria vines, are four romantic cottages – each
boasting a charming wood fire, double spa bath, queen bed and futon couch, along with barbecue and basic kitchen facilities. Each cottage has views that are unique, whether it be looking across the vast expanse of Lake Eildon, into the nearby state forest or peeping out of the windows to the lush garden. “It’s a charming place to come and just relax,” Anne-Maree said. “The atmosphere here is unique.” Willowlake is able to host weddings, birthdays, end of year functions and everything in between. They are also open for accommodation each night of the week, and are a genuine 4-Star rated property. For more information you can go to their website at www.willowlake. com.au, or give Anne-Maree a call on 57773814.

Treat yourself under country skies
FOOD lovers will gather under open skies at Village Bonfires across North East Victoria as part of High Country Harvest (May 13 – 22) this autumn. At least five Village Bonfire locations will bring together the region’s vibrant food communities to celebrate harvest over fireside appetisers such as chestnut soup, mulled wine, freerange pulled pork rolls, fire-roasted lamb and new-season toffee apples.
Hungry travellers will also be able to choose from a program of 40 curated events over the festival’s 10 days, on sale from March 1. The region’s village streets, mountains and valleys will come alive with colour, as local producers harvest the spoils of autumn, while chefs forage for mushrooms and other wild ingredients in nearby forests. Village Bonfire locations include the Moyhu Hotel in the heart of the King Valley, the shores of Rocky Valley Lake at Falls Creek, by the mountains at dusk at Mansfield’s Delatite Winery, at the majestic Winton Wetlands, and nestled in the alpine foothills of the Kiewa Valley at Mount Beauty. This year’s events range from an ultra-local “100 step” progressive feast in buzzy Bright, to a winemaker-led tour of the starry night sky over the Warby Range, to a campfire-side high tea among the snow gums beyond Falls Creek. Join a leisurely bike or horseback ride weaving to High Country feasts
including the annual Rutherglen Tweed Ride, or warm the fingers as you learn crumpet making, fly fishing, lamb butchery or creative campfire cooking. During the festival many of the region’s best restaurants and cafes will also showcase produce-driven Harvest Menus (think Milawa free-range chicken with Wooragee mushrooms at Rutherglen’s Tastes Restaurant, or Sexy soups at Mansfield Regional Produce Store) and sip-worthy Autumn Warmers (think Hot Buttered Pumpkin Rum at Beechworth’s Ox and Hound or Salted Caramel Single Origin Hot Chocolate at Bright Chocolate). With crisp mornings and the scent of wood smoke dancing in the evening air, get swept away by the High Country’s stunning alpine scenery, historic streetscapes and abundant valleys. Full program of events is on sale from March 1 and more information is available on www. highcountryharvest.com.au.

Visitor expenditure increases THE latest National Visitor Survey results released by Tourism Research Australia in December 2015 show that domestic overnight visitor expenditure in Victoria was $11.9 billion in the year ending September 2015. This represents a 5.9 per cent increase year-on-year, which was in line with the national average and ahead of New South Wales (+4.6
per cent) and Queensland (+2.7 per cent). The increase in expenditure in Victoria was driven predominantly by domestic overnight visitor spend in Melbourne (+10.2 per cent to $6.9 billion) whereas overnight visitor expenditure in regional Victoria remained relatively flat (+0.5 per cent to $5.0 billion).

STRATHBOGIE RANGES
Record numbers visiting Strathbogie Shire INCREASED interest has seen a rise in visitor numbers to the Strathbogie Shire, with record numbers flowing in to both the Euroa and Nagambie visitor information centres throughout summer. Over 800 people have walked through the doors of the Euroa Hub on Binney Street since the start of summer (in 2015) while over 1800 people have made enquiries at the Nagambie Visitor Information Centre on High Street. With a mixture of residents and tourists, some who came to Euroa and Nagambie for the very first time, it is clear interest in what the shire has to offer has increased in the last 12 months. In the same period last year, 1067 people made enquiries at Nagambie, which showed there was a 69 per cent increase in enquiries in 2016. Meanwhile in Euroa, there was a slight drop in numbers compared to the same time last year, with 970 people visiting the Hub for the first
BACK TO NATURE: 9LVLWRUV DUH ³ RFNLQJ WR 6WUDWKERJLH 6KLUH
six weeks of summer in 2014-15, which means there was an 18 per cent reduction in numbers. In Nagambie, numbers have been up since Christmas with many enquiring about the New Year’s Eve fireworks which attracted about 5000 people at Jacobson’s Outlook. Other enquiries included school holiday activities, fishing and
swimming spots and where to eat, drink and be merry around Christmas time. The opening of the region’s first ‘chocolate factory’, the Ministry of Chocolate at Mitchelton Wines, has also boosted tourism in Nagambie. Volunteers and council staff were also inundated with phone calls at both visitor information centres.
At the Euroa Hub, most visitor enquiries were about the location of toilets, collection of maps for walking trails around the area and historical information about the shire, particularly where Ned Kelly was once sighted many years ago. Strathbogie Shire mayor Colleen Furlanetto said it is great for the two facilities to record attendance numbers in collecting valuable information about enquiries from community and visitors alike. “The volunteers who predominantly operate the facilities are pivotal to the success of our information centres,” she said. “Council uses this data to continue to develop and provide information which is most in demand, while ensuring hidden treasures around our shire are shared.” Ward councillor Deb Swan said Nagambie has been focused on growing its reputation as a holiday destination for a long time and these figures are proof of that.

WANGARATTA
Up to date entertainment complex JEN EARNSHAW from Wangaratta Cinema and Wangaratta Supa Bowl invites visitors to enjoy the myriad of entertainment options available.
WANGARATTA Cinema and Wangaratta Supa Bowl welcome people of all ages and abilities to their centre. The Wangaratta Cinema Centre was opened in November 1995 in response to the desire of the public of Wangaratta to have an up-to-date entertainment complex. Initially comprising three screens, the tremendous support of the customers convinced them to add an extra screen to the complex in 1999 thus enabling a greater variety of product to be offered. The facilities provided by the cinema are second to none in country Australia.
Wall-to-wall screens in all four cinemas, “Dolby” surround sound, digital projection equipment with 3D capability all combine to give patrons a cinema experience only normally available in the larger city-based “multiplexes”. Boasting a large range of drinks, snacks and combos for everyone, the candy bar is the place to purchase those all important mouth watering “movie snacks” to enjoy while watching the action unfold on the big screen. The Wangaratta Supa Bowl opened its doors to the public in February 2012. After a long planning and building process the completed centre is second to none.
Being the first centre in the Southern Hemisphere to install the latest and fastest pin resetting machines means that no one misses out on the action. Catering for all ages and abilities the Supa Bowl comprises of 12 lanes all with wheelchair access, automatic bumper bowling (for the kids), and access to ramps so that everyone can have a go. To quench that thirst or to stop that little tummy rumble the cafe in the Supa Bowl offers up delicious milkshakes, coffees, scoop ice cream, cold drinks and snacks that can be enjoyed while you are having a great time with your family, friends or work colleagues.

THE use of social media and the internet has helped turn the Wangaratta tourism industry into a $123.5 million business. Economic impact data suggests there has been a 30 per cent increase in tourism over the past three years, greatly due to the trending use of digital media. Holiday makers last December continued to seek information about local destinations and accommodation via email, the web and social media, with the latest ďŹ gures supporting the growing preference. Some 2300 people enquired through the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre via email in that month, up 32 per cent on 2014. Access to websites connecting them digitally to the highlights of the region was on par with 2014. And 3500 people physically walked into the centre to make an enquiry, the same as the previous year.

THE revised OfďŹ cial Visitors Guide for Wangaratta and Surrounds was launched in December. It will provide residents and tourists with a comprehensive guide to annual festivals, events, attractions and places to stay throughout the region. The guide showcases the many experiences on offer within the King Valley, Milawa Gourmet Region, Eldorado and the Woolshed Valley, Wangaratta and Glenrowan. New sections of the guide this year include improved mapping, information for those looking to hold an event in the region, those seeking to embark on a culinary adventure and even a page titled “Perfectly Brewedâ€? for those ale sipping, cider loving High Country fans. “The purpose of the guide is to encourage residents and tourists to experience the naturally beautiful scenery, heritage rich history and exceptional culinary delights
of Wangaratta and surrounding townships,â€? Emma Crameri, tourism development coordinator of the Rural City of Wangaratta, said. “With over 70 pages of information on what to do, see, taste and experience within the region – it’s your one stop shop for information while planning your visit or navigating your way around while in the region.â€? Endorsed by Tourism Victoria, 60,000 copies of this complimentary guide will be distributed at local businesses, the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre as well as every visitor information centre across Victoria and southern New South Wales. To obtain further copies of the new OfďŹ cial Visitors Guide, contact the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre on 1800 801 065. Cultural trail in the works along Ovens River AN Elders Rock has been placed at Apex Park to honour local community leaders every year on the anniversary of National Reconciliation Week. It’s an idea thought of by the late Uncle Wally Cooper, who passed away last December, and it will form part of the Bullawah Cultural Trail, a path that stretches 2.4km along the Ovens River in Wangaratta. The $180,000 trail will tell a story of the area’s Aboriginal heritage and how a local tribe has lived historically and to the present day. A large crane delivered the 20 tonne rock during February and it will signify the beginning of the trail. Uncle Wally was a highly respected Elder whose pride in his Aboriginal heritage and message for hope for the future inspired many. “This is a really exciting step toward achieving the Elders Rock Project and we are pleased that Uncle Wally’s passion for

reconciliation will continue and leave a legacy for future generations,” Central Hume Primary Care Partnership’s Chris Thorne said. “Each year during National Reconciliation Week, the Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander community will publicly recognise local community leaders in a special cultural ceremony and will unveil their handprints on the Elders Rock.” The large granite rock, which
will form the foundations for the sculptures, has also been placed along the trail. Artists Anderson Hunt and Paul Blizzard in Wangaratta selected rocks from Mawsons Quarry. The rocks will be home to their much anticipated sculptural artworks they are developing with local Elders. Chair administrator Ailsa Fox said “it’s great to see this project come together, there will be a lot happening in the coming months and it is fantastic to see relationships strengthen between Indigenous and non-indigenous people in the local community who are all working to achieve a shared goal”. The Bullawah Cultural Trail is due for completion this August. This project was made possible through grants from Regional Development Victoria and Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources and the Rural City of Wangaratta.

Camping out at Winton Wetlands WINTON Wetlands is set to bring ‘glamping’ to the North East with its pop up ash camp locked in from March 18 until May 22 this year. Partnering with leading providers Flash Camp, the pop up tents and campsite will, according to Winton chief executive ofďŹ cer Jim Grant, offer luxurious camping at the wetlands. “This type of offering has been earmarked for the project from the early planning stages and to have this locked in is a signiďŹ cant milestone for the Mokoan Project,â€? he said. Mr Grant said the pop up camping will be set up on Green’s Island, giving guests central access to the 8750 hectare site, and coinciding with the launch of Winton’s biggest ever calendar of events. YEA
New lease on life for Yea’s Gallery 34 “IT’S hard to believe that Gallery 34 has been under new management for six months already,” said David Bates, who runs the gallery in the heart of Yea’s High Street. “And what a transformation has occurred. “Most of the walls have been repainted to highlight the art better, new doorways have been placed, all new display cabinetry has been brought in and the options on offer
have multiplied tenfold” Mr Bates said that there was a wide range of creative pieces available for purchase at Gallery 34, and recommended visitors come in and peruse all that there is to offer. He said that the gallery has jewellery from Mariposa Magic (Michelle Stewart), Jacquie Campbell, Susan Blaschko, Leigh Carbines and Tom Marik. There is also woodwork from Colin
Parton, Clive Bullen and Bob Eustace, metal sculptures from Darren Gilbert and soon Tim Read, silk scarves, and even glass creations by Rob Hayley and Peter Toyne. Those who enjoy ceramics can see pieces from Tony Broadley and Mountain Clay Designs (Yvette De Lacy), just to name a few. “The list keeps growing,” Mr Bates said. “So far, we have exhibited Jo Junor,
Kerrie Gerlach, Laurence Cummin, Catherine Stewart, Darren Gilbert, Janet Matthews and Glen Saunders. “Wow, what a six months it’s been. “Just wait till you see what’s in store for the rest of the year. “We’ve only just begun” Gallery 34 is located at 34 High Street, Yea, and more information is available on the website on www. gallery34.com.au or via social media at www.facebook.com/gallery34yea.
