Winter Magic at Your Door
AS the temperature drops, the ground gets colder, the hoarfrost starts to emerge and we know winter is coming and the snow will soon transform Dinner Plain into a winter wonderland. You’ll need to prepare yourself for the crisp, cool and clean mountain air that will make you take a deep breath and relax, admire the alpine views and glistening snow that surrounds you. Sheltered among the snowgums on the highest freehold land in Australia, Dinner Plain in winter needs to be experienced to be believed. With the picturesque snow capped houses, snow play at your door, roaring open fires and warm alpine hospitality you’ll feel like you’re in a European snow resort but in fact you’re in Victoria’s high Country, only 10km from Mount Hotham. The chalets of Dinner Plain blend harmoniously with the rugged beauty of the surrounding Alpine National Park, they are made of stone, wood and corrugated iron, the design inspired by the original cattlemen’s hut and their colours are drawn from the colours of the snowgums. Trails leave from your chalet door for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Take a short stroll and you’ll find a beginner ski
run, tobogganing, tube sliding, husky rides and night skiing. Of course no snow experience is complete without a soak in the hot tub, so be sure to experience Dinner Plain’s Onsen Retreat and Spa and slide into the 40 degree outdoor bathing pool. As you meander through the snowy village drop into one of the quaint bars, restaurants, cafes, local brewery and ski shops dotted around the village. The village kicks off the snow season on Queen’s Birthday weekend in June in true alpine style – a Giant Snow Dance Festival and fireworks in the heart of the village. One of the highlights of the winter calendar is the annual Sled Dog Challenge which was the first Australian snow based race of its kind. The Sled Dogs race around Dinner Plain village, weaving among the snowgums and it is quite entertaining to watch the thrills and occasional spills. The Dinner Plain winter season officially opens on Queen’s Birthday weekend and continues until the end of September. SNOW NEWS
Sample beer with altitude at Blizzard Brewing Company AS its very name suggests, winter is an ideal time to visit Dinner Plain's Blizzard Brewing Company. The venue's cosy ambience and welcoming atmosphere greets those who are in the area enjoying the winter snow, and is also ideal to just socialise and settle in for a spell. Blizzard Brewing Company's Mark Hubbard says the brewery crafts beer exclusively with snow melt drawn from large underground acquifers, which gives the end product a purity and crispness. The brewery has just celebrated its second birthday, and this will be its third winter open to the public. Blizzard Brewing Company has many beers to try, including their Who's Ros and Trevor North East Ale, Avalanche Amber Ale, Summit Stout, and Lavender Lager varieties,

that has been barrel aged in oak wine barrels. The business is just a stone's throw from skiing fun, with the brewery site at 5 Cattle Pen Drive, Dinner Plain being just 50 metres from the Cobungra ski lift, and what's more, you can also
settle in and sample from their range of tempting seasonal food offerings. For more information on the company's impressive range of beers, see the website on www.blizzardbrewing. com or check out the Blizzard Brewing Facebook and Twitter pages.

THE winemaking adventure continues at Cofield this winter, as their “Blend Your Own Adventure” experience is welcomed back to their Cellar Door. Using a combination of their two separate varieties, Shiraz and Durif, the winemakers hand the reins to the customer, inviting visitors to become a guest winemaker in this exciting blending exercise. Rutherglen is a region renowned for its reds, with the full bodied Shiraz and lesser known Durif a frequented favourite of visitors to the area. Guests are invited to taste the two distinguished varieties, giving thought to the preferred flavours and characters they wish to enhance

in their custom blend. Assisted trials are made using varying percentages of each variety, until the guest winemaker decides on their custom medley. Visitors are invited to custom design their bottle label, and may wish to order stock to fill their wine cellar at home. Make a day of your Cofield experience, by enjoying your discounted Tasting Plate and pre-booking your “Blend Your Own Adventure” experience. At just $10 per person, give the winery a call on (02) 6033 3798 to reserve your spot. For further details see www.cofieldwines.com.au.

Mitchelton Day Spa set to delight this winter Mitchelton Winery’s new day spa facilities are set to provide a luxurious respite from the cold this winter season, for both visitors to the area and locals alike. Situated on the banks of the Goulburn River near Nagambie and surrounded by native bushland, the superb day spa at Mitchelton has been designed as a warm, relaxing and quiet refuge for guests to retreat to after a day of exploring the Nagambie region. The concept of a day spa and hotel was first conceived in 1967 with the acquisition of the land on which Mitchelton now stands by Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine. Purchased in 2011 by Gerry Ryan and son Andrew, the development of further facilities was considered a priority in the
evolution of Mitchelton. "The hotel and day spa is something that we wanted to develop early on with our acquisition of the estate," said Andrew Ryan, managing director of the Mitchelton property. "It has always been the missing piece in the puzzle for Mitchelton. "The Goulburn Valley and Nagambie have so much to offer, we have high hopes that the addition of the accommodation facility will help attract more visitors to the region and boost local tourism." said Ryan. Located just 90 minutes from Melbourne, Mitchelton feels like a world away from the city. Considered to be a destination unto itself, the combined day spa and hotel facilities offer a varied range of relaxation packages
from Spa Soirees designed for a ladies day out, through to group bookings for birthday getaways, hens parties, pre-baby pampering or post wedding indulgence.
“The hotel and day spa is something that we wanted to develop early on with our acquisition of the estate,” Using a consciously created assortment of botanical therapies, the bespoke spa treatments have been designed to capture the diversity and serenity of the Goulburn Valley.
With the inclusion of treatments suitable for children and teenagers, the addition of the day spa facilities is set to further enhance Mitchelton and the Nagambie region as a key tourist destination for couples and families. Since its inception in 1969, Mitchelton has developed a proud history of quality amassed around a portfolio of world-class wines crafted from the estate and Heathcote vineyards. The expansive Mitchelton property comprises Mitchelton Winery, award winning Cellar Door, The Mitchelton Hotel, The Day Spa at Mitchelton, Muse Restaurant, the iconic Ashton Tower, the Ministry of Chocolate Café, Aboriginal art gallery and Cellar function spaces.

Generations of quality wine IF you love a winery with history, then John Gehrig Wines is for you. John, a fourth generation winemaker, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the next winemaking generation of Gehrigs to craft fine wines. Ross has an obsession with producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic North East Victorian winery. In 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s original birthplace – Rutherglen- was too strong, thus Ross with wife Meghan have expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda (east Rutherglen). With the frosts of winter creeping over the vineyard, their attention in the vineyard turns to pruning and in

Meghan said harvest went well, although yields were slightly down "flavours were the winner".
Some of the current recommended wines include the new Reserved Durif RG 2016, an award winning, full flavoured dry red; the first release from their Rutherglen site, the 2015 Shiraz, which is an ideal companion to a hearty steak meal; and their Riesling, which scored 95 points from James Halliday and is full flavoured with a dry palate and great acidity. So if you are planning a trip to either cellar door this season, it is a great time to try some heartwarming fortified wines and full flavoured red wines to be matched to your favourite winter hearty casserole. A ‘bold and brave’ oration THIS year’s Kerferd Oration is to be delivered by Northern Territory Senator Malarndirri McCarthy. Senator Malarndirri McCarthy is a Yanyuwa woman from the Gulf country in the Northern Territory. She ďŹ rst entered the public sphere as a journalist with the ABC and more recently for SBS/NITV. With a focus on bringing communities together and ensuring remote communities are engaged with and listened to, Senator McCarthy wants to encourage all Australians to be ‘bold and brave’ to develop a united vision for Australia. “First Nations people share a history that stretches more than 50,000 years. "We have the longest surviving continuous culture in the world, yet our Constitution is silent on the existence of First Nations Peoples,â€? Senator McCarthy said. WARM UP: Keep warm and cosy in the midst of winter at Darker Days.
Celebrating the alpine winter BRIGHT Brewery is excited to announce that the second annual Darker Days festival will set Bright alight on Saturday, June 30. Centred around dark and winter beers produced by the brewers of Victoria’s High Country, Darker Days is a showcase of local produce and activities that celebrate winter in Victoria’s Alpine valleys. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this family friendly festival will bring together local producers, operators, entertainers, beer lovers and families to toast the season and welcome the return of lighter days following the Winter Solstice. “We had such a fantastic response to the first Darker Days last year,” noted Bright Brewery marketing manager and festival director, James Davidson. “I love providing the opportunity to showcase the region’s best dark and winter beers while surrounded by a festival that turns winter dreariness into a fun, fire-filled and delicious day out. “We learned a great deal from our first crack at running a festival last year, including the need to provide more food and warming drinks, more fire and… just more of everything. "So, we started planning early to
ensure that Darker Days is bigger and better this year, adding new vendors while also maintaining the relaxed atmosphere of a mid-winter festival surrounded by mountains, fire, food, stories and song. “Some exciting additions to this year’s festival include Backwoods Distilling Co, the new whisky producers from nearby Yackandandah, and the crew from Asylum Ghost Tours in Beechworth who will be telling ghost stories around the fires and leading a unique ghost tour around the haunted streets of Bright. “Darker Days will also mark the 2018 launch of Bright Brewery’s annual winter brew, Stubborn Russian Imperial Stout, and will see the return of our other limited release winter favourite, Black Diamond India Black Ale. “Most of all, I can’t wait to taste the dark beer delights that the other brewers of North East Victoria create for Darker Days 2018.” The festival will run from 12noon to 9pm on Saturday, June 30 at 123 Great Alpine Road, Bright (aka Bright Brewery’s vacant block), with entry a gold coin donation for the local CFA. So much to enjoy at Hotham MT HOTHAM has something for everyone in 2018, with Victoria’s most reliable snow coverage on Australia’s highest alpine village. With the resort perched on top of a mountain, your first move after clicking on your skis or board will probably be to take off down a slope, no waiting in lift queues for intermediate and expert riders. Kids and beginners are also catered for, with an excellent Ski and Ride School.
If you prefer something a little more relaxed, explore our snow gum forests more intimately on snowshoes with Alpine Nature Experience, culminating in a gourmet dinner around a fire and magnificent views over the Dargo Valley. You can even stay the night in an exclusive ‘glamping’ (luxury camping) experience. If you’re interested in the technical aspects of running an alpine resort, you can take an evening
tour with our groomers and find out how we keep the slopes perfect, ready for first tracks in the morning. BUXTON
Marysville - a winter weekend escape THE grand story of Marysville and surrounding towns originated with the opening of the Yarra track, a shortcut giving access to the plentiful Jordan Goldfields. Visitors passing through the area to the goldfields quickly realised the area was a beauty to be enjoyed in its own right. With an influx of guesthouses popping up since the 1920s, the Marysville area has evolved into one of the most sought after honeymoon destinations in Victoria for couples. The stunning environment is in part the key drawcard for the area. Numerous waterfalls are scattered through the forest: with trails suitable for cyclists, trail bikers and skiers weaving their way through the forested landscape. With snow play, tobogganing and various adventure
activities on offer, Lake Mountain resort offers winter enjoyment for families and couples alike. Providing enjoyment for visitors year round, Buxton Trout and Salmon Farm has been delighting visitors both young and old since it first opened its doors in 1958. As the first established trout farm in Australia and located just 90 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD in the Yarra Valley region, the farm has been owned by Mitch Mcrae and his family for over 25 years. The Buxton farm prides themselves on their gravity fed water supply, originating directly from Lake Mountain and fed through Stevenson Falls. Whether you consider yourself to be an experienced angler, or if it is your first time holding a rod, Buxton promises a guaran-

WHEN the temperatures drop in North East Victoria, the alpine regions gear up for another season of snowfuelled fun. Coming off the back of a recordbreaking year in 2017, this season is setting up to be the most hotly anticipated in years. The early forecast is for a cold and snowy winter so now might be the time to rekindle that lost love for the snow, or perhaps even start a new family tradition. The ideal family mountain, Falls Creek is a great all-rounder with unique experiences for visitors of all sorts. By the numbers it has Victoria’s largest skiable terrain and the only full ski-in, ski-out village, but these facts just scratch the surface. Nowhere else can you drive a snowmobile through the high plains, join a backcountry ski tour with a winter Olympian or ride fat

Popping the cork on prosecco FUNDING was announced at Brown Brothers winery in Milawa in March to grow the King Valley as Australia’s official home of prosecco, with the Food Source Victoria grant to support the $100,000 marketing and growth strategy. Wines of the King Valley is an industry and marketing body representing wine producers and growers across a vineyard area of 1800 hectares, with an increasing concentration on Italian varietals as their signature wines. The alliance includes the King Valley’s Prosecco Road producers, Brown Brothers, Dal Zotto, Chrismont, Pizzini and Sam Miranda. The project will analyse the potential and capacity of the King Valley wine region to capitalise on the growth in Prosecco sales and outline a strategic five-year plan to meet the huge potential. It will also help to identify tourism experiences that build on the region’s strengths as the national home of Prosecco, which could lead to an increase in the number of visitors to the region. The benefits of the project will be distributed to grape growers, winemakers, tourism operators and other local businesses, and will help drive
economic growth in the King Valley. The Wine Growth Fund is key to the Labor Government’s commitment to boost the wine
industry, which also includes the Wine Industry Development Strategy and the formation of the Wine Industry Ministerial Advisory Committee.

WALKABOUT Apiaries is not only home to one of Victoria’s best culinary honey producers, but also Whitehead’s Mead; a family owned and run meadery. Those new to mead may be forgiven for thinking mead is a sweet drink just made from honey, but the history of mead is so old and its origins so wide that mead has been made in many styles. Whitehead’s Mead makers focus on honey selection and accompanying ingredients like spices and fruits to create a ferment that is inspiring and alluring. Styles include Classic Dry, Spiced, Blackberry and Raspberry Melmomel.
The newest addition to the line up is the Red Gum Mead, a rich sweet mead made from honey collected by the Whitehead bees in the Milawa area. Red Gum honey is specially chosen for its toffee flavour and ability to ferment to a full honey flavour with texture of white port. It is ideally served as dessert mead straight up, or spritzed up with soda water and mint. Located next to St Paul’s Church on the Snow Road, Walkabout Apiaries and Whitehead’s Mead are open for honey and mead tasting 9am-5pm weekdays and 10am-3pm weekends.

MYRTLEFORD
Home of history and wonders MYRTLEFORD is situated at the base of the Victorian high country, a town shaped by pioneer graziers, gold seekers and timber gatherers. Before the settlement of the town, the land where Myrtleford now stands was the location of remote cattle station, Myrtle Creek Run. Recognised as an area of prosperity, many settlements popped up during the gold rush era founded by a diverse mix of nations. The Italians who settled in the area founded numerous tobacco farms, bringing an inux of earnings to the region. In recent years, the tobacco farms have been replaced by wine grapes, nuts, berries and hops, with fresh produce and artisan creations readily available at their varied farm gates. The area has in turn evolved to be known for its diversity of

WANGARATTA Art Gallery is excited to announce a new exhibition of prints by artist, Clayton Tremlett. The exhibition titled Beard and Influence invokes the dictionary definition of the verb to beard – ‘to oppose face to face, set at defiance or to boldly confront or challenge’. Clayton Tremlett’s linocut prints incorporating bushranger self-portraits provoke consideration about convictism, larrikinism, resistance to authority and the emergence of a national identity. In reconstructing himself (over four years) as these figures – part men, part myth – Tremlett asks us to consider what it is that different styles of beard might signify for modern-day wearers and observers, and what elements of masculinity are men seeking to express or project in wearing them. Tremlett has introduced local bushranger references and historic collections including reference materials and small objects from the Burke Museum Beechworth.
