ROM skiing the pristine white slopes of our resorts, to getting cosy beside an open ďŹ re in the North East’s welcoming pubs or restaurants, the region shows off its diverse attractions during winter. The weather may be cold, but there is still a wide array of festivals and events throughout the season. Wine lovers ock to Rutherglen for their popular Winery Walkabout, or head across to the King Valley for their Weekend Fit For A King, or the Glenrowan area for Trails, Tastings and Tales. The snow attracts many to the region to enjoy a range of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowshoe walks, and après ski socialising. Visitors can also ďŹ nd out more about Ned Kelly at the Ned Kelly Weekend in Beechworth. It’s always a good idea to drop in to your nearest

Award winning vintages at Monichino T

HE Monichino family estate is highly regarded for its award winning vintages. The vineyard was founded by Carlo in 1962 becoming a winery in 1972. The high quality of the grapes produced by the vineyard’s 24 hectares of low-yielding vines is enhanced by heavy pruning and light supplementary watering. This increases the intensity of the avor and emphasises the natural character of the fruit. The result is premium wines of full-bodied aroma and richness. The estate’s winemaking team have now extended the range by creating new varietals from traditional Italian grape varietals. Carlo’s son Terry is chief winemaker who has been part of the winery scene all his life. Terry studied wine oenology at Charles Sturt University for three years and also has experience winemaking overseas.

Ciavarella Oxley Estate a O

VER the last 20 years, there has been a fantastic blossoming of the food and wine offering in what we now know as the King Valley and Milawa Gourmet Region; a wine and food connoisseur’s delight. Cyril and Jan Ciavarella ďŹ rst ventured into the viticulture arena in 1978, selling grapes before turning to winemaking in 1992. They established their vineyard in Oxley, near the banks of the King River and went on to build their cellar door at what is now known as Ciavarella Oxley Estate. Son, Tony and wife, Merryn are now part of the team. The secret to making great wine, according to Tony, is no secret. It involves attention to detail at every point from the vineyard to the bottle. “Over the years, you get to know the grapes, and the style of wines that they produce best. “You try different things – in both the vineyard and the winery – to come up with a wine that is your own, and of which you are proud.â€?

$-04& &:& Tony Ciavarella says attention to detail is an essential trait in winemaking.

tiny gem in King Valley from page 14 Oxley Estate’s durif is described by wine critic Huon Hooke as “more elegantâ€? than the durifs of old, but is still a long-lived wine. They are often contacted by people who had cellared a durif for 10 or more years, saying how fantastic it was. “After making our ďŹ rst durif in 1999, people now visit us especially to get it. “They fondly reminisce about past vintages.â€? Ned Kelly history UP IBWF JUT PXO IPNF I

N a gesture that bridged some 135 years, Ned Kelly’s favorite rie passed into the hands of his Beechworth namesake during May. Matt Shore, curator and historian, proudly presented the Snider-EnďŹ eld rie, with Kelly’s signature “Kâ€? carved into the fore-end wood, to an emotional Matt Aldridge, who will play the part of Ned Kelly with the Beechworth Historical

Re-enactment Group. The presentation coincided with the launch of the soon to be opened Ned Kelly Vault, to be housed in the 1856 Sub Treasury building in Ford Street. Built to store gold in the 1850s and later to house the Beechworth Police, the Sub Treasury is soon to house the vault, which will boast the largest collection of Kelly era artefacts and memorabilia ever collected in

one place anywhere in the world. The Ned Kelly Vault will open in August. It will boast four rooms and a vault full of authentic, unique and priceless items that relate directly to the Kelly story, the period in which Kelly lived, and help explain the steady advance of Kelly into a major historical ďŹ gure and an icon of Australian popular culture. In an unprecedented

movement of cooperation and generosity, the Ned Kelly Vault will showcase the largest private Kelly collection in the world (some items have previously been displayed in blockbuster exhibitions in Melbourne). These will be combined with the Kelly collection from the Burke Museum, as well as other items on short- and long-term loans from private collectors, owners and public institutions.

STRONG CONFIDENCE: Sharon and Boaz Herszfeld with Indigo mayor Bernard Gaffney at Creswick Woollen Mills’ ‘A very ďŹ ne yarn’ exhibition opening in Beechworth.

24D01945/23-13

Informative exhibition I NDIGO mayor Bernard Gaffney reinforced his belief that tourism remains the lifeblood of Indigo Shire when he opened Creswick Woollen Mills’ new interactive ďŹ bre-tofabric experience in Beechworth recently. The mayor said that the commitment to Beechworth by Creswick Mills’ owners, brother-and-sister team Boaz and Sharon Herszfeld – opening a branch store in the town two years ago and now staging an exhibition of the ďŹ rm’s story and products – was a strong vote of conďŹ dence in the community. The Herszfelds operate Australia’s last colored woollen spinning mill in Creswick, near Ballarat. It was established by their step-grandfather, Paul Ryzowy, a

Polish migrant, in 1947. The business now has six stores throughout Victoria – all established by the younger Herszfelds – and a permanent exhibition at its Creswick mill. Its Creswick manufacturing of wool and alpaca eece is completed by an Australian design service for some product ranges made off-shore. The ‘very ďŹ ne yarn’ story now open in the family’s heritage Beechworth store offered a high-quality regional tourist attraction, Mr Herszfeld said. “The new exhibit gives a great insight into natural ďŹ bres and how these are processed,â€? Mr Herszfeld said. “Video footage shows blending, carding, spinning and weaving, showing how natural ďŹ bre products are made.â€?

ISITORS to the Gorge walking track will now have information to help them understand some of the things they will encounter en route. The Alpine Shire has erected a sign close to the historic shaft, known as the adit, which explains its history and also gives a picture of the canyon and instructions on how to get there. Historic information about the shaft was provided by the Kiewa Valley Historical Society and comments about the canyon were supplied by Jim Crebbin. Mr Crebbin, who is one of the promoters of the development of the track, said that everyone concerned was grateful to the shire for supplying the sign. “Those of us involved in encouraging people to take a walk on the wild side appreciate that we ďŹ nally have a useful sign where it was

IVERGUM Holiday Retreat’s new resident hosts, Alistair and Gina Diprose, believe that a healthy, happy lifestyle that is balanced in all areas of work, rest and recreation is of paramount importance today. It really seems that all of us need a rest from time to time. It is with this in mind that the idea of combining this philosophy with getaway packages can not only offer guests a fabulous holiday, but to give back something too. With this in mind the Rivergum Wellness program is now well under way. As Gina is a qualiďŹ ed meditation and chair yoga instructor, Rivergum is now able to offer new wellness and relaxation packages. Chair Yoga and Meditation Classes in the gardens are planned as well as other wellness related activities. To truly top it all off Alistair

is busy planning a Zen Garden and Hedge Maze, just two more wonderful changes to come that encourage relaxation. It is not hard to see why these new ideas really suit an evolving holiday park. Rivergum is set on more than

35 ha and includes a 1.5 km walking trail resting on the banks of the Murray River. Why not ask Gina about a walking meditation among this path of wonder and truly feel the bliss that Rivergum offers. Don’t worry about the kids

GLORIOUS VIEWS: MansďŹ eld and Mt Buller are bustling in winter.

Winter in MansďŹ eld HILE winter is upon us, there is no need to go into hibernation in MansďŹ eld. In fact MansďŹ eld, Mt Buller and its surrounding districts come alive during winter when snow is likely to fall. Only 2.5 hours from Melbourne, MansďŹ eld is the gateway to winter wonderlands and popular ski resorts. Mt Buller and Mt Stirling cater for skiers and keen family snowplayers alike, while occasionally snow falls low enough at Jamieson and Tolmie for local residents and visitors to get a little excited over. Back in MansďŹ eld, where the snow rarely falls, there is still plenty to do. An ever growing array of restaurants, cafes and variety

shops give visitors multiple choices of where to eat and where to browse for special souvenirs. The multicultural choice of cafes offers everything from good old Aussie fast foods to gourmet dining, bistro meals, Italian pizzas, Thai, Indian, Chinese and opening soon, the town’s ďŹ rst kebab shop. Once a quiet little country town, MansďŹ eld is now a bustling, seven day a week hive of activity. On opening weekend of the ski season (June 7-8) the popular Saturday Bush Market takes place in Highett Street from 8am to around 2pm. And on the fourth Saturday of each month the MansďŹ eld Farmers’ Market takes place in the median strip in High Street.

$04: Come in to the Hunt Club Hotel for some winter socialising with friends.

The Hunt Club Hotel is located at 1870 Mount Buller Rd, Merrijig. Another icon of the area is the Kevington Hotel, nestled on the banks of the Goulburn River past Jamieson. The Kevington Hotel started as Garrett’s Beer House in the Gold Rush of 1862. It is now the last example of a historic hotel left in this part of Victoria, Australia. The refurbished hotel is an ideal spot for a base to explore Lake Eildon, the

Goulburn River Inlet and the lush bush land of Jamieson and surrounding areas of the pub itself. Inside dining, outside dining - the choice is yours. With a newly refurbished kitchen and dining room, and a ďŹ rst-rate chef cooking a seasonal menu, the Kevington Hotel is an excellent place for lunch or dinner. INTER in the High Country can be about skiing, brisk walks or bikes on the Rail Trail. However, the rustic and friendly charm of a high country pub with blazing ďŹ re and a warming drink is another side to the season. One such pub, located in the foothills of the high country, is the Hunt Club Hotel in Merrijig, the one place to stop for a cold ale or hearty feast when visiting Mt Buller. No strangers to the surrounds, the Hunt Club has been serving cold ales since 1873 and nowadays the hotel has a family friendly dining room and plenty of cold beers on tap. Spring kicks off with a bang at the Hunt Club with the AFL grand ďŹ nal live on the big screen and throughout the summer months the hotly contested trivia night will once again resume on every second Wednesday. For those dining, menu options are extensive and happy hour is from 5.30 to 8.00pm.

%JTDPWFS B TMJDF PG *UBMZ in Myrtleford ASTONI is a brand new restaurant in Myrtleford owned by Adam and Ashley Pasqualotto. The pair have renovated a small portion of the local Anglican Church Hall to create their own pizzeria, adjacent to the Myrtleford Piazza on the Great Alpine Road. The name Bastoni means ‘sticks’ in Italian. Elements of the pizzeria, such as the internal tables, are made from old tobacco sticks, a tribute to the Pasqualotto family heritage in tobacco farming. Bastoni offers Napoletana style pizzas faithful to tradition and baked in a 400° wood-ďŹ red oven which is from legendary pizza oven maker Stefano Ferrara in Naples.

The menu focuses on using imported and local fresh ingredients and a method taught by the Vera Pizza Napoletana (VPN) association, which is based in Naples, Italy. Pizzas will range from the traditional margherita pizza to more modern dessert pizzas and pizza sandwiches, with a focus on utilising quality meats and cheese as toppings. The restaurant is fully licensed and will include a selection of imported and local beer and wine. Bastoni offers both indoor and outdoor seating. It is the perfect place to sit back and enjoy good food, wine and friends and is open Wednesday-Sunday for lunch (12-3pm) and dinner (5pm-late).

ETITE: Miniature Textiles is a biennial exhibition held by the Wangaratta Art Gallery which is growing in stature and prestige. This is the fourth Petite exhibition to be held and with over 200 entries, 116 works by 97 artists from across the country have been selected. PETITE: Miniature Textiles exhibition showcases the diversity of approach in textile artistry.

This exhibition has everything from tapestry weaving, lace, sculpture, applique, assemblage, embroidery, felting, basketry and dyeing all used to create works that are not only decorative, but often tackle deep and meaningful themes and ideas. The only stipulation was the size which was limited to a maximum 30cm in any direction. The beauty of the landscape

and the fragile nature of our environment provide inspiration for many of the works such as June Brown’s textile book Why I love Eucalypt Trees, Deborah McArdle’s sculptural work Marking Winter and Julie Paul’s woven tapestry Costal Weavings Series. The fragility of Human life and remembrance has been explored in a very poignant work from

John Parkes, Sample (dead two years now) being a work using cotton cloth from his late father’s shirt and shorts. This year the gallery have organised an Art Lovers Talk to compliment the exhibition to be presented on Wednesday 16 July at 10am. Seating is limited so booking is essential. HE King Valley Art Show is held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend in the big old tobacco storage shed at King Valley Cucina. The show complements and adds diversity to the Weekend Fit for a King wine and food event. It opens on Friday, June 6 with a gala opening from 7.30pm, with bookings online at www.kingvalleyartshow.com.au. This year’s judge is Julie Chambers, director of the Art Vault in Mildura. Julie has a long involvement in art encompassing art education, administration and her own art practice. After moving to Mildura, Julie and her husband, Kevin, opened “The Art Vaultâ€? in November 2008 in response to the lack of opportunity for art graduates from the local La Trobe University, and over 90 artists have taken up a residency there during its ďŹ rst ďŹ ve years of operation. The success of the King Valley Art Show is reected in the loyalty of the event’s sponsors. 2014 sees almost all sponsors and Friends of the Art Show members from 2013 with the event yet again.

most innovative, people’s choice award, Judge’s Gem award and also an award in honor of late King Valley resident Barb Sartori. The King Valley Art Show is open from 10am to 4pm on June 7-9 2014. Entry is $3, children are free.

YACKANDANDAH

:BDLBOEBOEBI a restful spot F

OR over 150 years, locals and visitors alike have continued to discover the beautiful landscapes and rural charm of the small town of Yackandandah. And visitors continue to ock there to this day. The ďŹ rst European settlement in the tranquil town dates back to the early 19th century. Settlement in the area ďŹ rst followed in the footsteps of Hume and Hovell after 1824, and in the late 1840s, squatters began establishing their properties and pastoral runs. The town was not immune to the gold rush, with gold being discovered in the area in 1852 and miners of many different nationalities seeking their fortunes in the area, in Yackandandah and many surrounding towns. By the late 1850s, the town had become much more established.

Colonial establishments soon took the form of education, the Roads Board (1862) and Postal Services. In 1861 the telegraph arrived, in the early 1890s the railway and the local newspaper. Reef mining came and went, and large scale mining also made its mark in the latter part of the 19th century. Today, the community remains as vibrant, diverse, and close knit as ever, and the town’s rich history is reected in its streetscape, landmarks such as its bridges and memorial gardens, and more. Yackandandah is also a vibrant retail and tourism hub, with much to see for the curious visitor, and is also home to a thriving, creative community of artists, musicians and artisans in a number of ďŹ elds. Early spring will see the Spring Migration Festival, with
