WELCOME

iOEFY

WELCOME TO THE WINTER ISSUE OF THE NORTH EAST TOURIST NEWS 2015.

F

ROM skiing the pristine white slopes of our resorts, to getting cosy beside an open ďŹ re in the North East’s welcoming pubs or restaurants, the region shows off its diverse attractions during winter. The weather may be cold, but there is still a wide array of festivals and events throughout the season. During the Queen’s Birthday weekend in particular, visitors and locals alike are spoiled for choice. Wine lovers ock to Rutherglen for their popular Winery Walkabout, or head across to the King Valley for their Weekend Fit For A King, or the Glenrowan area for Trails, Tastings and Tales. The weekend also sees local mountains and alpine villages, including Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Dinner Plain and Mt Buller, welcome in the ofďŹ cial start to the snow season. The snow attracts many to the region to enjoy a range of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowshoe walks, and après ski socialising. Visitors can also ďŹ nd out more about Ned Kelly at the Ned

Kelly Weekend in Beechworth. It’s always a good idea to drop in to your nearest visitor information centre for helpful advice on upcoming events and other opportunities to make the most of your stay, whether it is for a few days or a few weeks. Whatever the duration, we hope you enjoy your time in our beautiful part of the world. $07&3 *."(& Young snow enthusiasts enjoying themselves at Falls Creek. PHOTO: Chris Hocking Images.

ITHIN each of us is a desire to live our lives to the fullest, according to David Chitty from Adventure Guides Australia. Mr Chitty said that the team at Adventure Guides Australia is here to help you achieve your dreams. Mr Chitty said that Adventure Guides Australia (AGA) have been providing quality outdoor adventures in the North East of Victoria for over 30 years, based primarily on ‘The Island in the Sky’, Mount Buffalo. During the cold season the AGA team provide affordable family friendly snow activities from the Mount Buffalo Ski School. “Mount Buffalo and the Mount Buffalo Ski School are a

great option for beginners and for a fun family day out in the snow,â€? Mr Chitty said. “Based out of the Dingo Dell day centre and cafĂŠ we offer affordable toboggan hire, crosscountry ski lessons, snowshoe tours, cross country ski tours and plenty of snow play options to entertain the whole family.â€? He said that AGA also facilitate single and multi-day adventure programs for schools, businesses and groups, and can arrange exciting bucks and hens days, functional group ďŹ tness training or even just fun outdoor activities with groups of friends. Check out their website for advertised programs and for more information or contact them to create a custom program to suit your needs. More information about Adventure Guides Australia can be found on www. adventureguidesaustralia.com or on the business’ Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TripAdvisor pages, or call 0419 280 614.

SNOW NEWS

(SFBU FYDJUFNFOU BU Falls Creek W

inter is almost upon us and that means Falls Creek is gearing up for another exciting snow season. In 2015 there are plenty of reasons to make Falls Creek your mountain - whether out on the slopes, on the trails, in the restaurants or at the lodge. There is something about Falls that keeps visitors coming back for more, especially those from the North East. There are unique things you may not know about Falls Creek. For instance, it is the only place in Australia where you can drive your own snowmobile, ride a snow bike on a ski trail and see a sled dog event under village lights at night. It’s also the only true ski-in, skiout village in the country. There is no closer feeling to a romantic European-style resort, the best part is skiing from the slopes right to the door of any property in the village.

(&5 3&"%: Lots of snow fun is on offer at Falls Creek this winter.

Nobody wants the same old and Falls Creek prides itself on bringing new and activities to add to the old classics. In 2015 the Snowplay Park has had a facelift and will offer more fun than ever (especially

with its kid’s snowmobiles) and the snowshoe trails will open a number more routes thanks to the new mountain bike trail network at the resort. A bit further out, Back-country tours with Steve Lee are set

to be a hit once again and Australia’s best cross country network is free as always. Falls Creek is ready to go in 2015. For more information, see www.fallscreek.com.au.

Winemaking families welcome winter

T

HE annual Weekend Fit For a King Festival is hosted again this Queen’s Birthday Weekend by winemaking families of the King Valley. At a time when we start to think about comfort food, conviviality and luscious red wines, the region welcomes visitors with open arms. Visitors can talk directly with the winemaker and be amongst the ďŹ rst to taste the new vintage. A $20 tasting glass, purchased at any of the nine participating wineries, becomes a ticket to taste. If sangiovese is not your favourite, explore the breadth of the region’s offerings, from prosecco, pinot grigio, arneis, Riesling, chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet and nebbiolo. Tastings are matched by a feast of Italian style rustic fare.

Immigrant farmers and wine growers have shaped the valley’s food culture, and passed down between the generations recipes for lasagne, cannoli, salami and other specialities, available for purchase across the weekend. Families and children will ďŹ nd plenty of reason to linger, with live music, bocce and craft activities. The event is an annual highlight for winemaking families of the King Valley, from small operators such as La Cantina and Darling Estate, to international brands such as Brown Brothers. Participating wineries are Brown Brothers, Darling Estate, Politini Wines, Chrismont, La Cantina, Sam Miranda, Dal Zotto, Pizzini and Symphonia. HE town of Beechworth comes alive every August to the sounds of banjos, mandolins, ďŹ ddles and and guitars as the Kelly Country Pick, an annual Bluegrass and Old Timey music festival returns from August 21-23. Now in its 17th year, what began as a small gathering of musical friends has developed into a music festival which draws musicians and lovers of acoustic music from all over the country. Events now take place in four iconic Beechworth venues over the weekend – the Old Priory, the Bridge Rd Brewery, and the Hibernian and Nicholas Hotels. Patrons can buy a variety of tickets to suit their needs – from weekend passes to individual concert or

workshop tickets. The Kelly Country Pick presents a jam packed weekend of concerts, workshops, open mic sessions and jamming opportunities for musicians of all levels. Come along and enjoy the atmosphere in historic Beechworth this winter – cosy open ďŹ res, wine and dine with friends and be entertained by some of Australia’s ďŹ nest string players. Or get involved – go to a workshop, volunteer for a free weekend ticket, or join in the Sunday morning gospel singing in the Priory garden. There is something for everyone. O matter what your viewpoint is of infamous bushranger Ned Kelly, there is an activity for everyone during Ned Kelly Weekend. The weekend coincides with the anniversary of the 1880 committal trial, which took place 135 years ago this year. The event, which is run by the Beechworth Historical Reenactment Group, will be held in Beechworth from August 7-9. Activities will include a siege re-enactment on Saturday night, reenactments of Ellen and Ned Kelly’s trials, and more.

Sunday’s schedule will include another Ned Kelly trial re-enactment, as well as a fascinating talk by speaker Greg Blake, author of Battle of Eureka. T has taken 11 years, but the Brabralung Iconic Trail which links Mt Hotham to Dinner Plain is ďŹ nally open. Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain ofďŹ cially opened the new 12 kilometre iconic trail which highlights the importance of indigenous heritage in the region, with a traditional smoke ceremony during autumn. The Brabralung Iconic Trail was co-funded between the Mt Hotham Resort Management Board (MHRMB) and the Alpine Shire Council with assistance from Parks Victoria and the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC). The project was implemented to provide a greater range of recreational opportunities including cycling and walking during the summer months,

while cross-country skiing, snow shoeing could be carried out during the winter season. Construction of the trail commenced in 2004 under strict environmental guidelines and in 2005, a cultural heritage assessment identiďŹ ed 25 indigenous sites in the vicinity of the trail. The sites were incorporated into the planning for the trail to ensure their historical signiďŹ cance was preserved and in accordance with the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan it was recommended the trail be given an appropriate indigenous name. ‘Brabalung Iconic Trail’ was approved by the GLaWAC in December 2014, and is the name of the Gunaikurnia Clan for the region of Gippsland, and translated means Male, berry

Worcat (female), meaning the people. MHRMB CEO Jon Hutchins said the trail encapsulates the history of the mountain. “The trail highlights the natural beauty and abundant ora and fauna of this area and the cultural signiďŹ cance of the Victorian alps in particular our indigenous history but also the voyages and experiences of

white settlement including cattle grazing, gold mining and tourism and recreation, he said. The Brabralung trail also compliments a growing range of iconic tracks and trails in the Mt Hotham area, including the Cobungra Ditch and the Huts Walk, Razorback and Mt Feathertop Track, The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing and the Australian Alps Walking Track.

Beer collaboration UP CF B XJOUFS IJU W

HAT happens when a brewer, a chocolatier and coffee roaster get together to cook up an idea? In the case of Bright Brewery, a potent craft beer called Stubborn Russian, which will be unleashed on Victoria’s North East this winter, just in time for ski season. Bright Brewery’s James Davidson said he is excited to see how the new version of their annual winter release

comes out, as it is the ďŹ rst time the brew has been infused with chocolate and coffee. The collaboration will see around 1000 litres of the 2015 Stubborn Russian hit the shelves, and both Sixpence Coffee’s Luke Dudley and Bright Chocolate’s Simeon Crawley were thrilled to be part of the process and providing local blends of their coffee and chocolate as ingredients.

This is the ďŹ fth year in a row the brewery has done this special brew, so named because its base is a Russian imperial stout. Mr Davidson said the brew was developed in cooperation with Luke Dudley from Sixpence Coffee and Simeon Crawley from Bright Chocolate, and the end product would be very potent, with an estimated alcohol content of over 18 per cent and rich chocolate and

coffee infused avours. “I think it’s great three local businesses can come together and collaborate on something like this,â€? Mr Dudley said. Mr Davidson said Stubborn Russian is best enjoyed in small doses and served in wine glasses. Information is available on www.brightbrewery.com.au or their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube or Untappd feeds.

Eight additional fully automatic snowmaking guns have also been purchased, to be installed on the southern side of Bourke Street, completing the automation of Mt Buller’s most popular ski run. Also on the slopes, the muchloved Tirol T-Bar has received a major upgrade ahead of the 2015 season, with the existing diesel motor replaced by an electric version. 7JDUPSJB small state still hides travel secrets A USTRALIAN Traveller has unearthed a number of “hidden gems in Victoria, published during autumn in the collector’s edition, “100 amazing places you haven’t been to (yet). The list was compiled by the Australian Traveller team after interviewing hundreds of well-known and well-travelled Australians. It reveals their favourite secrets, with many surprises.

Former Wallaby turned journalist and proud New South Welshmen Peter FitzSimmons chose Victoria’s High Country gem Beechworth, describing the heritageladen town as “the most beautiful town in Australia. “It proves just how many amazing places there are in Australia when Victoria, small by size and large by population, can have so many ‘hidden secrets’.

“Tourism Victoria are so right when they say ‘you will love every piece of Victoria,’â€? says Australian Traveller founder Quentin Long. The North East’s amazing places you haven’t been to (yet) 20. OME roads and tracks in Victoria’s forests and parks will be temporarily closed for winter and spring as part of an annual program. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria run the seasonal road closure program to ensure driver safety as well as protect forest and park roads from damage during the cooler months. DELWP State Roads and Bridges Planning Manager Tony Dowler said some forest roads and tracks closed from late autumn, while more are closed from after the Queen’s Birthday weekend until just before Melbourne Cup weekend when the track

surfaces are most likely to be damaged by vehicles. “The early closures are necessary in some parts of the state because the roads and tracks in our parks and forests have the potential to become wet,â€? Mr Dowler said. “The closures are important because our forest roads and tracks become much more difďŹ cult for drivers to use safely over this period. “Some forest tracks would suffer signiďŹ cant damage if they were left open all year round so we assess them each year and then after consultation with stakeholders including Four Wheel Drive Victoria close any that require it.â€?

Parks Victoria General Manager Regional Services Chris Rose said: “Most of the roads and tracks are re-opened in early November, in time for the Melbourne Cup Weekend, â€? Mr Rose said. “As always we want anyone driving in our parks and forests to stay on the designated routes, take their rubbish home and take particular care with campďŹ res.â€? For those wanting to plan their trip go to the Public Access Map site in the visiting parks and forests section at www.delwp. vic.gov.au. For maps of the early closures in parks check the “safety/closures and conditionsâ€? section at www.parks.vic.gov.au.

OR food and products that are not only good quality, but as consciously sourced as possible and good for your health and wellbeing, many customers ock to The Village Trader in Myrtleford. The business opened at the beginning of this year and was the brainchild of retail professional Anna Chambers and her daughter, nutritionist Sarah Spiker. Sarah said the pair wanted to open the business when they became frustrated at not being able to source the food they wanted to eat, and seeing a gap in the local market for such a shop. In the months since their

opening, the shop has become a popular stop for health conscious locals and visitors keen to keep their healthy food regimens on track while travelling. She said that both of them moved from Melbourne to the alpine area in search of a more relaxed and simpler lifestyle and say they love being part of the Myrtleford community. “We haven’t regretted it for a minute, she said, adding that she has made new friends from many different walks of life simply through regular interactions with her customers. NEW study about recreational ďŹ shing in the Nagambie Lakes has benchmarked angler catches, ďŹ shing methods, angler satisfaction and spending patterns to provide a clear picture of this developing ďŹ shery and how it can grow local tourism in the future. Fisheries Victoria executive director, Travis Dowling, said the study revealed most anglers were satisďŹ ed with their ďŹ shing experience and that catches were now dominated by golden perch and Murray cod, both of which had been stocked extensively in recent years. “Recreational ďŹ shing licence fees have helped stock more than one million golden perch and Murray cod ďŹ ngerlings into the Nagambie Lakes system since 2009 so it is great to see

anglers’ investment paying off,â€? Mr Dowling said. “The study was undertaken over four summer months by Fisheries Victoria with a contribution from the Shire of Strathbogie, which was keen to know more about the role of ďŹ shing and its economic beneďŹ ts to regional tourism. “The total economic value of the ďŹ shery was estimated to be up to $500,000 annually, conďŹ rming that recreational ďŹ shing is not only socially signiďŹ cant, but also important to the regional economy. Mr Dowling congratulated Wally Cubbin and members of the Goulburn Valley Association of Angling Clubs for working closely with ďŹ sheries managers to develop the ďŹ shery into the community asset that the study clearly demonstrates.

For over 35 years Tony has been exhibiting his work around Australia. His paintings are sought after by individuals and corporations and appear in collections including the National Gallery of Victoria. The major sponsor, Dal Zotto Wines, is again funding the Grand Winner prize of $3000. Many sponsors are long time supporters of the King Valley Art Show. Sponsors include Hargraves Secured Investments, King River Estate, RBA Financial Group, Eminence Wines, Boonderoo Farm, King Valley Tourism Association and Casa Luna Gourmet Accommodation. Sponsor numbers continue to grow with more recent additions being Ovens & King Builders, Flying Duck Wines, Brown Brothers and Domaine Chandon. Both Pizzini Wines and Chrismont have returned to the stable of sponsors in 2015. They offer two new awards - a $750 Printmaking prize and a Still Life in pastel or watercolour, both acquisitive. The ‘Friends of the Art Show’ have also increased in number, enabling KVAS to offer three signiďŹ cant non acquisitive prizes which attract even more high quality entries. BUMPER harvest is now over and the King Valley community turn their minds to the region’s annual cultural zenith; the King Valley Art Show (KVAS). The weather cools, the footy cranks up and artists from Warrnambool to Underbool and CampbellďŹ eld to WhitďŹ eld are burning the midnight oil creating wonderful works of art for the 2015 King Valley Art Show. Over 350 entries are expected to ďŹ ll the King Valley Cucina function room to bursting point from 10am on Saturday, June 6 to 5pm on Monday, June 8. They will be competing for $15,000 of prizes. This is the highest prize money ever offered by the KVAS, a signiďŹ cant achievement by the organisers and sponsors as the event approaches its 20th year in 2017. These awards are well sought after by artists however they are certainly not the only way for artists to impress the 1000 or so patrons that attend over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Sales at the KVAS have been very solid for several years now. This year’s judge is Tony Flint. Tony is a North East artist with an enviable track record. Born in 1950 in Renmark, South Australia Tony has lived his entire life in the rural regions of Victoria and South Australia. His work concentrates on the Australian landscape, its history and issues.
