THIS summer’s fires have had a devastating effect on our region and while certain areas have been hit harder than others and there has been a clear differentiation between fire affected and where the flames were, tourism in the North East has had to deal with visitation dipping at one of its most prominent times of the year. The recovery has started in earnest and there are positive signs ahead as people start to return to the High Country and North East areas. Thankfully a lot of the region was untouched by the flames and has been open for business all the time and now the entire area is looking for heightened bounce back of tourism through autumn and the lead up to the snow season. The State Government recently announced a $200,000 grant to assist the region’s tourism industry in the recovery which was welcomed by Tourism North East. “What this funding does is provide individual tourism business operators the tools to leverage state and federal marketing strategies underpinning bushfire recover efforts,” acting Tourism North East CEO, Sarah Pilgrim said. She said this would ensure an online presence at a national, state, regionwide and destination level through key online tourism marketing platforms of Tourism Australia, Visit Victoria, Victoria’s High Country and each of the High Country destination websites around the region. This push that the beautiful North East is well and truly open for business helps send the message that there is no better time to re-engage, rediscover and re-visit this wonderful part of the world for your next, holiday, weekender or day trip.

Dinner Plain is well known as a dog-friendly snow-bound village in winter, but what you might not know is up until the bushfire crisis devastated tourism in January, it was one of the fastest growing family destinations for green season stays in the High Country. Sitting at 1570m above sea level, Dinner Plain (or DP as the locals know it) rests between the alpine resort of Mount Hotham and the High Country township of Omeo. It is roughly an hour’s drive from Bright. Serving a small population of residents year-round, it can swell to 2,000 people during busy periods in January and Easter. Where Dinner Plain has moved in leaps and bounds is in establishing the newest Mountain Bike Park in the High Country. DP has been quietly building trails over the past summer and has an enviable 26km of flowing machine-built singletrack. This is the kind of trail that gets mountain bikers excited! Featuring mostly green (easy) and blue (intermediate) trails, Dinner Plain offers the perfect mix of terrain for all abilities that is ultimately fun to ride. This is a park you can definitely bring the kids’ bikes along for!

course, modular pump track and the best playground you will find for miles. With two pubs, a brewery, restaurants and cafes all open year round, the options are many and varied for a great meal out. Whether it is escaping to the peace and tranquility of the snowgums or joining in the festivities of major events, Dinner Plain delivers in spades. Highlight events coming up include the hugely popular Easter Festival from April 10-13 plus a free outdoor film festival doubleheader on the March 7-9 long weekend. The fires might have come close but they didn’t spoil the green and pristine nature that makes Dinner Plain the perfect place for your next local getaway. To find out more visit www.visitdinnerplain.com.au

At its core Dinner Plain is family-friendly by design, so all of the main attractions are focused around an impressive village of stand-alone houses and holiday homes. Forget the days of cramped apartment conditions, Dinner Plain’s offering is almost 100% architecturally designed multi-storey houses with spacious bedrooms and living spaces. The extra space and seclusion is perfect for large groups and families and many are dog-friendly too. Outside, the village layout has you stumbling across highlights at every turn like tennis courts, a frisbee golf j/24d08309-v5/10-20 North East Tourist News - Autumn 2020

Revisit the Australian Gold Rush era

ORIGINALLY built as the Beechworth Athenaeum in 1857, The Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum was named in honour of Robert O’Hara Burke, the famous explorer and former Beechworth Superintendent of Police, after his death at Coopers Creek in 1861 during the Burke and Wills expedition. The collection includes Burke’s own bible, inscribed revolver and saddlebags used in the ill-fated expedition. The museum boasts a fascinating and historically significant collection of more than 30,000 individual items, many dating back more than 150 years. The collection includes the significant RE Johns collection of Aboriginal weapons and

tools, a large collection of 19th century native animal and birdlife taxidermy, significant Gold Rush era artefacts, and the “Street of Shops”, a unique recreation of Gold Era Beechworth. A new section of the museum, the Ned Kelly Vault, opened in the former Sub Treasury building of the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct in 2014. This collection is the most comprehensive of its type in regional Australia and includes the original death mask of Ned Kelly and numerous original items relating to the bushranger and his gang. Two of the best festivals on Queen’s Birthday weekend

AN institution across the wine regions of the North East, the Queen’s birthday long weekend each June marks two major events in two very distinct viticultural parts of our area. Rutherglen has been home to the Winery Walkabout for nearing 50 years after humble beginnings in 1974. Famous for spectacular fortified and hearty red wines the Rutherglen wine region has been a staple for visitors to the area on that winter long weekend with great food, music, produce and more on show in and around Wahgunyah, Corowa and Rutherglen. Further south the King Valley celebrates the Weekend Fit for a King on the same weekend and showcases its cool climate table wines, headlined by the ever-popular

sparkling offering along Prosecco Road. Immerse yourself in cooking classes, wine tastings and local produce from Milawa to Cheshunt

across this amazing weekend. Lock in June 6 & 7 to visit two of the North East’s very best wine festivals. Go to www.

North East caters for all tastes

WINE Regions across Victoria are many and varied but in the North East of the state we are blessed with such diverse climates, soils and varietals you would be hard pressed (pun intended) to not find something you liked. From the cool climate sparkling’s of the King Valley to the heavy reds and fortified’s of the Rutherglen area and everything in between, the High Country and North East really has things covered. The granite soils of Glenrowan delivery Shiraz, Muscat and Tokay’s to die for while the Beechworth wine region has stamped itself as world class with Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo. Mansfield nestled in the Upper Goulburn area, produces aromatic whites, French-style sparkling and elegant, textural red wines with snow capped mountains as your

backdrop through the winter. And unusual styles like Strawberry wines are on offer too. Undoubtedly the wines

A taste of winemaking history

WHAT better time to visit the Milawa Gourmet Region than autumn when it is overflowing with produce, sunshine and intimate harvest celebrations as part of High Country Harvest. If you love a winery with history, then John Gehrig Wines is for you - John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the fifth winemaking generation of Gehrigs to craft some fine wines. The Gehrigs are Victoria’s oldest winemaking family, settling in the late 1850s at Barnawartha in North East Victoria. Ross has an obsession with producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that pay homage to this iconic North East Victorian winery. If you are planning a trip to the cellar door this autumn you may catch up on their new release wines including the 2018 Pinot meunière

and 2017 Elizabeth Block, or try the family favourite Gamay made by generation six Grace Gehrig who is 10 years old. So if you enjoy a wide range of diverse wine -why not come and see them this autumn when you are out

discovering North East Victoria at Rutherglen or Oxley. Or maybe you are looking for a venue for your wedding or special celebration? Look no further as they have a beautiful relaxed river deck outlook

at Oxley or large rustic heritage listed cellar door at Rutherglen. For information on John Gehrig Wines check out www.johngehrigwines.com.au, or their Facebook and Instagram pages, or by calling (03) 5727 3395.

Finding your own unique style

MYER Centrepoint’s favourite fashion stylist returns to the region on Monday, April 20 just in time for the autumn season. Whether you need help shopping for a specific reason, season or event, are stuck in a style rut or need a general wardrobe update, Natt Cross is there to make the whole experience a success. Natt takes the guesswork and hassle out of shopping so you can look your best without the stress. Skilled at curating looks for all ages and occasions, Natt will work with you to uniquely fit your personality, lifestyle and budget. For Natt, every person has their own individual style so getting to know them is essential. “My first step in the styling process is to find out about them, what they do,” she said. “I ask about family and what their day to day life looks like, where they

STYLIST Natt Cross. work, what they do for fun, their interests etc ...and then, based on that information and working with their body shape, age and personality, I choose pieces I know will work best for them. “I don’t try and change people, I like to enhance their personal style and inspire them to dress well, look good, feel good!”

Natt said while trends come and go, classic style remains. “There are some beautiful fashions coming into Myer Centrepoint stores for the autumn/winter season,” she said. “Beautiful checks in fine black and white houndstooth, and the classic tweed check is a new season must have - these will feature on welltailored double-breasted blazers and coats. Whilst rich and warm earthy tones in red earth, tumeric and deep chocolate brown will feature in leather skirts, belted dresses and trench coats. “The must have boot this season will be knee high styles again in warm rich tones, to be worn under midi length skirts and dresses. “Of course, leopard print is always a welcome addition in any wardrobe, but the surprise colour trend for the autumn/winter season is cerulean blue. This is a bold and bright royal blue that will feature across many

style ranges and will certainly brighten cool weather wardrobes.” While Natt keeps a close eye on fashion trends for her clients, at the end of the day she wants to build a wardrobe that works. “I teach clients how to build a functional and fashionable wardrobe based on their lifestyle, shape and budget. I show them how to dress their shape and give them the confidence to make the right style choices. “And styling is for everyone and every shape - I’ve never had a client I couldn’t style.” Myer Centrepoint’s complimentary pop-up styling studio commences on Monday, April 20 for a limited time only. If you want to take advantage of Natt’s expertise, simply visit www. myercentrepoint.com.au to book your free styling session. Individual or group bookings welcome.

at Lavington transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the fair. Traditionally, the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under one roof, instead of travelling to 20 different establishments. Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques

Fair is also a fundraiser for Antiques Fair Committee and AlburyWodonga Community Chest Inc who will be providing delicious light lunches as well as morning and afternoon teas throughout the weekend of the fair. The Albury-Wodonga Antiques Fair is open to the public from 10am until 5pm on Saturday, April 4 and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, April 5. Admission is $9 for adults and includes a lucky door ticket. Accompanied children are free. There is plenty of parking available nearby and wheelchair access into the hall. Opera in the Alps: Helping bring tourists back to the High Country AFTER harrowing weeks of bushfires, smoke and uncertainty, much-loved Opera in The Alps is on again for its 24th year in historic Beechworth in north-east Victoria. Being held in the afternoon and early evening of Saturday, March 14 on the shaded fairways of Beechworth Golf Club, the popular annual event features visiting guest soloists, aspiring young opera singers, international didgeridoo player William Barton, a packed program of favourite opera repertoire and wellknown music, and great outdoor feasting thanks to local food and wine vendors. Opera in the Alps founders and directors Graeme Wall OAM and Margot Cory-Wall OAM said that after enjoying the unwavering support of North East Victoria and its

BEECHWORTH

Haunting tours of the asylum

HIDDEN away from prying eyes atop a lonely hillside on the outskirts of Beechworth’s historic town centre, Mayday Hills Asylum sits overlooking the town, waiting. In its 128 years of operation, there have been over 9000 recorded deaths, and likely many more than that, if the truth be known. Now, thanks to Asylum Ghost Tours – Beechworth, you can wander through its many twisted hallways and small, stifling rooms. Asylum Ghost Tours offers ghost tours, history tours, paranormal investigations, a haunted cinema experience, and regular sleepover events at the historic Mayday Hills Asylum in Beechworth, Victoria, in the midst of 11 hectares of heritage gardens. Let the experienced guides tell you all the secrets of the place, relax in a comfortable lounge chair to watch a horror doublefeature, or come along to one of the sleepover events and stay the night. If you’ve previously visited, come back to explore some recently-opened areas you may have never seen. Explore beyond doors that have been locked for decades, and see what few have experienced before. While the sun shines, join the weekend daytime history tours to

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE: The Asylum Ghost Tour at Beechworth encompasses the history, memories, local tales, urban myths, and stories of the supernatural surrounding the 128 years the facility ran. PHOTO: Asylum Ghost Tours hear about the 128-year history of the buildings of the former asylum. You’ll hear stories of the opening of the facility, the many patients we still know about, and the final years of the ‘Lion of Beechworth’, as the asylum was known. After darkness falls, the tours of the dark, haunted buildings of the facility begin. Your host will guide you through the many abandoned

hallways, cells, common rooms, surgeries, and isolation areas of the old asylum. The ghost tour encompasses facility history, memories, local tales, urban myths, and stories of the supernatural. For the more adventurous, paranormal investigations take place when all is quiet and the dead open their eyes. Groups experience two- or three-hour

investigations, in an attempt to find out who or what still haunts the foreboding asylum. From experienced ghost-hunters to those who merely wonder at the whispered tales of hauntings, the promise of an entertaining exploration of the most haunted areas of all tempts many. Timeless designer linen locally inspired AS the smallest of the mainland states, Victoria is somehow full of places with distinct charm and character. A special craft is going into everything from beer to designer clothing. A perfect example is the unique linen wear from Eva’s Sunday. The team takes their inspiration from the local community and it shows how a proud tradition of gorgeous quality garments goes hand in hand with the proud history of each location. The creative heart of the company – a combined studio, warehouse and office is situated in the scenic town of Myrtleford. The brand makes a point of using the beautiful landscapes of the area as a focal point of their promotions. Another store nearby in the picturesque and historic Beechworth was another way to be a part of the craft of the region.

Like the town itself, Eva’s Sunday offers a fashion that stands the test of time rather than the ‘in thing’ this month and ‘out’ the next. By going beyond a simple seasonal approach to garment design, they have opted for pieces that work best layered to the local climate.

Their story is one of passion for quality linen wear and a passion to be a part of local life. “Our Parchment range is a story utilising a luxurious off white linen paired with desert tones,” Kenya, from Eva’s Sunday design team, said. “The soft palette is accented with a mossy green gauze milled in Italy

SIGNATURE STYLE: The newly released Parchment range utilises a luxurious off white linen paired with desert tones.

and a striking Liberty print from the iconic print house Liberty London. “Consisting of a wide range of minimalistic styles that are easily layered together, in signature Eva’s style this collection is timeless, stylish and extremely comfortable. “Taking classic silhouettes with a unique twist, carefully considered to be suited for any size and age. “Shot in the picturesque countryside of North East Victoria, the stunning Australian landscape accentuates the beauty of the styles, inspiring the undertones of the range. Going back to grass roots.” You can experience the exquisite designs of Eva’s Sunday seven days a week at their Myer Centrepoint store on David Street in the CBD of Albury and at the Beechworth store at 83 Ford Street six days a week (for more details – head to myercentrepoint.com.au or check their social media sites).

BRIGHT, MYRTLEFORD & DISTRICT

Female pedal power hits the High Country THE unstoppable growth of women’s cycling will see the muchloved High Country Women’s Cycling Festival (HCWCF) return to Bright, Victoria, in 2020, with an extended program and continued support for Ovarian Cancer Australia. Based out of Bright, the festival (20-22 March) aims to inspire, encourage and support more women to ride, and to experience the beauty of the High Country by bike. Clare Holdsworth, spokesperson for HCWCF, explained that from its outset, the festival’s mission has been to make cycling in the mountains more accessible and more inclusive for all levels of cyclists. “In 2020 we want to provide an opportunity for cyclists who are new to climbing and not up to riding the full ascent and descent of Mt Buffalo," Ms Holdsworth she said. "Working with our cycle safety partner RoadSafe North East, we have introduced a ‘Ride to

UNFORGETTABLE REWARD: Riders in the High Country Women’s Cycling Festival experience the breathtaking scenery of the Australian Alps. Rollasons’, as part of the Buffalo Women’s Ride (Saturday, March 21). "Experienced ride leaders will escort the riders to a halfway turnaround point, providing tips and building confidence to ensure a safe, enjoyable and rewarding ride.”

Backed by major partner, Regional Roads Victoria, the festival’s focus on safety is key for participants seeking a supportive cycling environment. As well as reduced speed limits and traffic management protocols, organisers will rollout a campaign

with RoadSafe North East, to communicate important 'Pass Cyclists Safely' messaging, in the lead up to the festival. Festival organiser, Michelle Armstrong, explained that despite the organic growth in women’s cycling, in an alpine environment where road riding is more challenging, the gender imbalance is strongly evident. “Many female riders consider hills and mountains beyond their capability," Ms Armstrong said. "We will share our knowledge, build confidence, push boundaries and help women discover new ride destinations with new friends. "The super fun weekend promises more than just cycling and includes a Lycra Lunch Party with ‘Fashions on the Field’; bike mechanics, riding skills clinics; rail trail produce rides; yoga; bike fashion pop ups, a celebration dinner and more. THE King Valley Balloon Festival will take place on the AFL Grand Final long weekend in September this year. The move from the hectic Queen’s Birthday Weekend is expected to attract even more balloons and spectators to take advantage of the less hectic long weekend event schedule and the traditionally finer September weather. The three day event will be held at Brown Brothers Milawa Airfield on Friday, September 25 (AFL Grand Final Parade public holiday), Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27 and is the biggest balloon event in the state according to one of the organisers Paul Gibbs, director of operations at Goldrush Ballooning. “We estimate we will have 20 balloons coming at present and hope to build on that from there,” he said. “The major attraction of the weekend is the Moon Glow when all the balloons take flight together at night to music.” “This year, for the first time, there will be a Moon Glow flight on the Friday and Saturday evenings.” The Moon Glows are ticketed events and spectators are urged to book early as it was sold out

“We estimate we will have 20 balloons coming at present and hope to build on that from there,” said Paul Gibb. the last two years. “The balloons take flight for around 20 minutes but the event goes for around three hours starting from 4pm,” Paul said. “There’s entertainment for the kids, plus food provided by local producers from the Milawa area, and music.” The weekend provides plenty of other opportunities for spectators including a mass ascension each morning from 6am when there is free entry to the airfield for spectators to enjoy the show. Last year’s festival included one VIP balloon in the shape of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul said another surprise balloon would appear this year. Goldrush Ballooning will also provide spectators with the thrill of a lifetime passenger flight which costs $385 per person for an hour. For more information visit Goldrush ballooning.com.au.

The healthy link between growers and consumers MILAWA Bread was started more than 20 years ago by owner Adam Rivett who received the Queen Trust Laureate to study the art of regional and slow fermented bread in France. The Milawa Kitchen came about just over three years (Adam already had part in the Milawa Cheese Bakery Restaurant with Milawa Bread) when Adam and wife Florence DeSoutter purchased the remaining part of the business from Milawa Cheese. “Our vision at Milawa Bread and The Milawa Kitchen is to keep traditional skills alive in regional areas to serve us into the future,” Adam said. “Our mission is to inspire communities by being curious about where our food is grown and how and by connecting people to their food. “We know that a kitchen is a critical link between growers and consumers and we feel a responsibility to protect the future of food. “To that end we are committed to supporting growers who are farming sustainably and creating transparency around what’s in your food and where it came from. “We are also wanting to create more accessibility to healthy, real food for more people. We want to make an impact and leave people better than we found them.”

All fun and games in 50 shades

LAUGHS GALORE: Join the book club as they read 50 Shades of Grey, in a hilarious musical parody.

A MUSICAL which is a hilarious and sexy send-up of 50 Shades of Grey, one of the best-selling novels of all time, will visit Wangaratta on March 29. Following sold out shows in New York and Las Vegas, this laugh out loud romp has had audiences rolling on the oor with laughter, dancing in the aisles and begging for more. The show is not Fifty Shades of Grey in its entirety, but instead explores the steamy relationship between the well-known characters (a naive hardware store employee and the handsome business man with unconventional sexual practices) as seen through the eyes of three women in a book club. As they devour the novel, the characters’ affair comes to life around them. The show is described as a fun, naughty and irreverent production, with uninhibited performances, dirty

dancing and some great songs and music. Rural City of Wangaratta manager of arts, culture and events, Penny Hargrave, said it’s the perfect show for those wanting to let their hair down and have a girl’s night out, and it has been scheduled to run on the weekend after the ďŹ rst school term ďŹ nishes. It’s also one a group of friends or workmates will enjoy together. While it’s strictly for adults only and contains coarse language and adult themes, as well as strobe lighting and smoke effects, it also full of humour. Those who haven’t read the novel will still enjoy the ride, as will the critics and fans alike, who will all get to ďŹ nd out how many shades of grey there can be. It will be performed on Sunday, March 29 at 7.30pm and tickets are available at Ç Ç Ç Í˜Ç Ä‚ĹśĹ?Ä‚ĆŒÄ‚ĆŠ ĂƉĂÄ?͘ Ä?ŽžÍ˜Ä‚ĆľÍ˜
