THE PLACE TO BE: Who can blame overseas tourists for choosing the North East to experience the Australian bush? International visitors spent a cumulative total of 4.9 million nights in Australia, in a two per cent decrease from the previous year. Although there is a high (and growing) number of visitors who go caravan/camping in Australia, a challenge remains regarding length of stay; especially as core European markets soften due to economic uncertainty in the Eurozone and Brexit worries. This softening has a severe impact on regional Australia and highlights the need for an increased focus on getting more long staying visitors to Australia, such as working holiday makers, who are significantly more likely to stay longer in regional areas.

NEW figures from Tourism Research Australia have revealed 377,000 international visitors opted to caravan or camp in Australia in the year ending March 2019, marking a seven per cent increase from the previous year. The millennial market; led by working holiday makers and backpackers, continues to be the strongest age demographic with 157 000 international visitors aged 20 to 29 choosing caravanning and camping in Australia. The 30 to 54-year-old age group represented 127,000 international visitors, followed by 73,000 visitors aged 55+. Victoria had 91, 000 international visitors, with an impressive increase of five per cent from the previous year.

AROUND THE REGION
The Original Score: Music and Hotels of Beechworth WOULD you believe that back in its heyday the lovely little town of Beechworth was home to nearly 40,000 people? Pioneers, settlers, philanderers and felons, all hoping to strike it rich in the goldfields in and around the town. With this many people converging in one area, there was one thing for certain. Typhoid. Well yes, there was the scourge of communicable disease, but what else did these fine folks bring with them? A generous number of pubs and hotels, musicians and dancing. The second most sought after thing in Beechworth to gold was the bottom of a whisky bottle. By 1874 Beechworth residents supported 61 licensed premises - now that’s one mean pub crawl. The Burke Museum and Historic

evening walk and rich discussion about music, and the pubs it was played in, in ‘The Original Score: Music and Hotels of Beechworth’. Starting at the Music in Beechworth display at the Burke Museum, this guided walking tour through town will focus on music venues of time-gone-by, including a performance at the historic pipe organ at the Town Hall and finishing with a glass of wine and a musical performance at the Nicholas Hotel. When you step into one of our glorious establishments, close your eyes. You can almost hear the clang of the piano, the chinking of glasses and the scuffle of rowdy miners. Cheers. Local event now a national championship WANGARATTA ultra-running identities and Ned Kelly Chase event directors Justin and Sharon Scholz are delighted that the October event has been selected as the National 100 kilometre Championships for 2019. “This is a great outcome for our region and our city,” Justin said. “The 100 kilometre championships have generally been held at larger locations such as the Gold Coast and Canberra, so to have them starting at Apex Park in Wangaratta this year is great,” he added. The Ned Kelly Chase, now into its seventh year will again be held on the fourth Sunday in October and takes in the magnificent Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, Oxley Milawa Trail and urban trails along the Ovens River and One Mile Creeks. “We’re fortunate to have such a great network of flat, sealed paths through picturesque surroundings,” said Sharon. “This event attracts hundreds of people from metropolitan areas all around the country each year and they always commend the course and the natural beauty of our region. “We’re not too surprised that the Australian Ultra Running Association selected the Ned Kelly
HAPPY: Thomas and Shannon Mu after completing the 50km running event in 2018. Chase for its National 100 kilometre championships this year,” she added. Apart from the opportunity to run or walk 100 kilometres, the event also encompasses a 50 kilometre, 42.2 kilometre marathon, 21.1 kilometre half marathon and 10 kilometre event. All utilise the sealed paths in the region and all entrants in all events except the 10 kilometre are aiming to finish near 12pm on the Sunday. “The approximately common finish time has been the best part of this event,” said Justin. “It gives every entrant an opportunity to finish when there is a big atmosphere in the park
regardless of whether or not they are a fast or slow athlete. And the entrants also get maximum support on course towards the end when they need it most.” For those not willing to run or walk such gruelling distances, there is a 100 kilometre and 50 kilometre bicycle chase option available. Entrants start later than the runners and they are provided with arrest warrants for runners on course. “That’s right,” said Sharon. “Each bicycle ‘Trooper’ is given about five arrest warrants on the start line and they then have to cycle off and catch up to their fugitives on the course,” she said. “Runners wear numbers on their back so they can be identified, and the cyclist has to go past the runner, pull over and then issue a green wristband to their runner to signify that they have been arrested. It’s a lot of fun.” To enter one of the events on offer, or to find out more about this important regional event scheduled for Sunday, October 27, please visit the website where details are provided and online entries are being taken. The secret of Victoria’s designer linen wear is out AS the smallest of the mainland states, Victoria is somehow full of places with distinct charm and character. A special craft is going into everything from beer to designer clothing. A perfect example is the unique linen wear from Eva’s Sunday. The sisterly team take their inspiration from the local community and it shows how a proud tradition of gorgeous quality garments goes hand in hand with the proud history of each location. The creative heart of the company – a combined studio, warehouse and office is situated in the scenic town of Myrtleford. The brand makes a point of using the beautiful landscapes of the

Opening a store nearby in the picturesque and historic Beech-
worth was another way to be a part of the craft of the region. Like the town itself, Eva’s Sunday offers a fashion that stands the test of time rather than the ‘in thing’ this month and ‘out’ the next. By going beyond a simple seasonal approach to garment design, they have opted for pieces that work best layered to the local climate. Their story is one of passion for quality linen wear and a passion to be a part of local life. You can experience the exquisite designs of Eva’s Sunday seven days a week at their Myer Centrepoint store on David Street in the CBD of Albury. FANS of classic musical theatre are invited to attend Revolution Theatre Productions’ upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar, being performed at the Albury Entertainment Centre from September 12-15. Director Christine A Duff, musical director Paul Brosche, and choreographer Cazz Kardol, together with their cast, have put together an inspiring new take on this Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera classic. If you thought you knew Jesus Christ Superstar the musical… think again. Set to a blistering new rock score, the last days of the life of Jesus Christ are brought sharply into focus when seen through the eyes of the Apostle Judas Iscariot. Lloyd Webber’s 1973 epic chronicle of love, betrayal and politics, chronicles the familiar story of the last week

RUGGED BEAUTY: A photo from local photographer Jean-Pierre Ronco’s exhibition at Bright Art Gallery this spring.
Spring calendar to showcase diverse exhibitions THE Bright Art Gallery has planned an exciting range of exhibitions for this spring, starting on September 20 with an exhibition of stunning photographs and paintings by the Alpine Artists. In conjunction with this, there will be another two exciting exhibitions. Firstly, the Bright Festival of Photography Exhibition of Print Finalists, showcasing the best in photography with images from around the globe. As a third wonderful addition there will be an exhibition with works from the gallery’s permanent collection on the subject of ‘Farms & Gardens’. The permanent collection exhibition will run until November 4. From October 10 to November 4 two new diverse exhibitions: The first is ‘Paint & Fibre’ by four talented regional artists. Ian McKinnon creates beautiful woven wall-hangings, Diane Mackenzie uses acrylic paints and mixed media to create vibrant and
explorative paintings, Annie Longmuir works in felting, creating pictures as well as functional art pieces plus there are award-winning paintings by Tony Thornhill-Cole (dec.). ‘Mountains – A Journey to Explore’ is a photographic exhibition by local photographer Jean-Pierre Ronco. His atmospheric photographs include images of the Victorian Alps plus Jean-Pierre’s native France. From November 12–20, the gallery will be handed over to the yearly P-12 School exhibition, followed by the summer exhibition opening on November 30. The gallery is open five days a week, from Thursday through to Monday 10am to 4pm. The Bright Art Gallery is entirely run by volunteers, managed by a volunteer committee. Mansfield’s own menagerie IF you love animals and family fun, there is plenty to enjoy at Mansfield Zoo. The zoo features a large menagerie of animals from across Australia and around the world, including two rare white lions, two tawny lions, monkeys (marmoset, capuchin, rhesus and bonnet), deer, camels, bison, alligator, wombats, kangaroos and much more. Take the opportunity to pat one of the friendly dingos while the lions are fed at 1.30pm on weekends and Victorian holidays all year round. You can celebrate a memorable New Year’s Eve with lion feeding at 7pm and the zoo closing at 10pm, which is great for families looking
for something different. You can also feed most of the animals by hand every day whilst you wander the expansive grounds. A small spade is provided to feed the more gregarious animals, like the camels, who will run off with the spade if they can. There are Sambar and Hog deer roaming the grounds with you, as well as rusa and fallow deer, peacocks and guinea fowl. Bring a picnic lunch or use the free barbecues – just watch out that the deer don’t steal your food from you. For the more adventurous, there’s nothing like trying to sleep to the sound of the lion’s roar.
Overnight campers are welcome every day of the year. Bring your own gear and set yourself up for a camping trip with a difference and take advantage of the opportunity to roam the zoo after hours. The camping season runs from September to the following May. Booking is essential for camping only (not required for day visits).

Big acts on the way in November A HOST of high profile Australian musical acts are set to entertain North East audiences this November as part of A Hitch To The Sticks, bringing Tex Perkins & His Fat Rubber Band, Magic Dirt, Stonefield, Ella Hooper, Dallas Crane and more to stages across the Wangaratta and King Valley region. Bachelor Girl, Cookin’ On 3 Burners, Davidson Brothers, Emilee
South and much more will also lend their talents to the third iteration of the regional festival on November 1-3 (Melbourne Cup Weekend). A Hitch To The Sticks (AHTTS) was born when Wangaratta-bred Australian rock legend/co-festival director Dallas Frasca joined forces with Renee Delahunty to bring city and regional punters together for a celebration of live music that
embraces regional history, local artists and produce, indigenous culture and unique event spaces while utilising Wangaratta’s spectacular country landscape as its backdrop. The concept offers participants a change to travel on a three day musical bus safari, featuring several VIP events exclusive to bus ticket holders, as well as three public events throughout the weekend in
Wangaratta and Moyhu. The Wangaratta Rodeo Grounds (behind the Showgrounds) will be activated as a brand new live music location for the region and will be host to one of the three, huge family-friendly events that’s set to take place over the Melbourne Cup weekend as a part of the program. For more information and tickets, see ahitchtothesticks.com. THE Milawa and Oxley Primary Schools are getting ready for their fifth annual Fox Run to be held on Saturday, October 19 at the Oxley Recreation Reserve. The Fox Run is a major fundraising initiative of the two schools, with last year attracting 1044 participants. Each year, both primary schools work in partnership with the community to make this event happen. It’s a day where families and friends can get outdoors and compete and laugh together while being active. The Fox Run will again be held at the Oxley Recreation Reserve due to the bush features that are perfectly suited to an obstacle run. Participants find themselves scrambling under cammo nets, climbing hay bales, wading through trenches, jumping wooden toblerones, climbing a shipping container and zipping down a soapy slide. The event includes the three different run lengths to choose from 2.5km, 5km and 7.5km as well as a major raffle. Each year the longer runs are attracting more participants and this

year event organisers have added a second wave in the 5km run. The 2.5 km event remains a family favourite, with whole families completing the course together. New to this year’s event will be the ‘Fox Den’ an all access VIP exclusive marquee for the winner of the ‘largest team’ as well as a longest slide competition. Last year people slid well past the end of the slide so this year we are going longer and there will be exclusive bragging rights to whoever slides the furthest. Local businesses and community groups play an integral role in supporting the event each year and both schools are extremely grateful for their involvement. There is plenty of action on and off the course with live entertainment, a jumping castle for kids, and various food stalls along with Fox Run merchandise available to purchase on the day. Early Bird tickets are on sale until Friday, September 20. Everyone is encouraged to get in early before the price rise. Further information can be found at www.foxrun.org.au.

40th Oxley Bush Market a real milestone MAKE sure you visit the 40th Annual Oxley Bush Market on Saturday, November 2 at the historic Oxley Shire Hall. Launched in 1980 by a small group of young Oxley residents, the bush market was a real trailblazer for what, now, have become regular events in most localities across the country. The 1980 market saw around 25 stalls featuring a range of homemade, home grown, homeproduced and new items from the local North East Victorian area. The Oxley Bush Market grew in subsequent years to a vibrant annual event, now featuring stalls with the same focus on mainly local, genuine produce. This year the Oxley Hall Committee received over 400 applications from high quality stallholders keen to participate on the day. However, space in and around the historic Oxley Hall (1875) limits stall numbers to 175. Traditionally held on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup, the market commences at 9am and continues until 3pm. Locals and visitors alike flock to the township to soak up the ‘country’ atmosphere and purchase the amazing range of goods on sale.

COMMUNITY FUN: Don’t miss the Annual Oxley Bush Market, which is celebrating 40 years this year. The Oxley Shire Hall Committee, which organises the event, is anticipating an extremely successful ‘ruby market day’. Hall secretary, Janet Heath, said the bargains on offer again promise to be ‘mind-blowing’. “While many stallholders come from our local North East area, others travel long distances to the market and large crowds are again expected at the Oxley Hall, which is just a short drive from Wangaratta at the entrance to the Milawa Gourmet Region,” she said.
And, as usual, this year will feature many ‘first time’ stallholders as well as a host of regulars offering unique goods at great prices. “The Oxley Bush Market is a great place to kick off your Christmas shopping. “Gourmet food, drinks and toe-tapping music all add to the festive atmosphere, with many people meeting up with friends and enjoying the vibrant surroundings. “The market is in full swing right up until closing time, so those wishing to avoid the morning crowds will find everything happening all day. “Another highlight is the Oxley Residents’ Association’s Monster Community Raffle drawn from about 2.30pm,” Mrs Heath said. Entry is free. The Oxley Bush Market is again an official “Waste Wise” event and the committee is encouraging stallholders and visitors alike to ‘put the right thing in the right bin’. Dogs are not permitted (guide dogs excepted), and smoking is discouraged for safety reasons. Funds raised by the market go towards local community projects. A journey of fun and discovery THE Y Water Discovery Centre at Yea Wetlands has a host of activities for all ages and interests during spring. From September 26 to October 1 don’t miss the Yea Pottery Exhibition. On October 2 there will be school holiday activities and on October 4 the first in a series of six public information sessions will be held. The information sessions will feature an impressive line-up of key speakers and panellists on a variety of environmental topics. The first session will be on Nature’s Unique Ecosystems to Fire, Flood and Drought presented by Professor Ary Hoffman. The natural world is currently facing unprecedented challenges due to a combination of climate
change, invasive species and habitat destruction. To help minimise the impact of these processes on populations, species, and communities, it is critical that natural systems can adapt and evolve. Professor Hoffmann will explore this important topic and discuss options for the future. There will be a 5pm Walk in the Wetlands prior to the session which is scheduled to begin at 6pm and end at 8pm. Entry is by a $5 donation and drinks and nibbles are included. The November 15 session will be on Climate Change and Community Responses. Bookings: www.trybooking.com/ BEPDN.
