Great River Road touring route A NEW touring route featuring a series of spectacular large public artworks recently installed at stops along the Great River Road between Albury-Wodonga and Khancoban is set to become one of the region's most iconic attractions after it was opened on November 6. The interactive pieces by internationally renowned sculptor Benjamin Gilbert feature native flora and fauna and showcase the beautiful landscapes visitors can view along the way - including the Murray River, Hume Weir, Murray River Floodplains and the Snowy Mountains. Funding for the project has been contributed by federal and state governments and Towong Shire Council, with contributions from the Man from Snowy River Tourist Association and Upper Murray Business Inc. Artist Benjamin Gilbert said it was

an honour to be chosen for the single biggest public artwork commission for the Upper Murray region. "These pieces set the theme for how people feel about a space," he said. "This area is really beautiful and it deserves the recognition.” Great River Road Reference Group chair Ed Barry said he was very proud of the result of this project which is set to become one of Australia’s most iconic touring routes. "We look forward to welcoming more visitors to this part of the world as they take in the spectacular landscapes throughout the Upper Murray,” he said. Towong Shire mayor David Wortmann said the Upper Murray 2030 Vision Plan is a great example of what can be achieved when council and community members work together.

Cold Chisel to perform on the green at All Saints

ONE MORE STAND: Legendary Aussie rockers Cold Chisel will perform on January 7 at All Saints Rutherglen. PHOTO: Daniel Boud The new Cold Chisel tour is called the Blood Moon Tour 2020 – named after a rare lunar eclipse where the sun, earth and moon all briefly align before returning to their own orbits. "You might get to see a blood moon once in your life,” explains the band’s main songwriter

and piano player, Don Walker. “Apparently there’s going to be one just before dawn when we’re in Melbourne on this tour, but we didn’t actually know that when we chose the name. Maybe it’s a sign.” Fittingly, the tour will boast a series of line-ups and locations that are as rare and memorable as a blood moon. Joining Cold Chisel at All Saints Estate, Rutherglen, will be Birds of Tokyo and Magic Dirt. “We’ve only done four tours since the early ’80s so we need to make each of them count,” explains the band’s frontman, Jimmy Barnes. “We knew that if we were going to get the band back together for another full tour it would have to be something really special. We wanted great line-ups and unusual places so that people would remember these gigs for a long, long time." The band has announced that Foodbank will be supported in various ways throughout this tour including by way of special auction items and fundraising collections at each venue.

THERE's nothing more Australian than hot sun, warm waves and Cold Chisel. The band's classic songs like Khe Sanh, Flame Trees, Bow River, My Baby, Cheap Wine, Saturday Night and You Got Nothing I Want have become the soundtrack to our summers. Since their legendary Last Stand way back in 1983, Cold Chisel has re-formed for just four national tours. Now, for the first time ever, this iconic Australian band will be playing 14 very special outdoor shows in Australia and New Zealand during summer, including an unforgettable a day on the green at All Saints Estate, Rutherglen on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. Roundhouse Entertainment, promoter of a day on the green, is proud to be bringing some of the biggest names in music to the region this January, including Sir Elton John and now Cold Chisel, in what is sure to be a January to remember in Albury, Wodonga and surrounding regions. One of only three Victorian shows, tickets to this event will be in huge demand.

Winery an ideal summer getaway TUCKED away in a quiet corner of Oxley, amidst a tranquil bushland setting, John Gehrig Wines makes for an ideal afternoon’s escape during the summer months. The welcoming cellar door features a wide green space bordered by a shady gazebo and peaceful bushland, making it the ideal spot to enjoy a picnic lunch and a bottle of John Gehrig wine on a warm afternoon. Among the highlight wine releases this summer is the winery’s 2017 gamay. A classic variety that originated in the French Beaujolais area, gamay is a light, aromatic red with fresh raspberry and red fruits that suits Australia’s warm climate. It is recommended to be drunk slightly chilled.

You can also sample some of the winery’s chenin blanc, a distinct varietal white which shows classic chenin characters such as fresh apple and pear appeal on the nose, and a fruit-sweet palate. It goes well with seafood, fresh salad, and spicy Asian dishes, and the variety was recently written up in Wine Business Magazine. If you’re purchasing some varieties to enjoy at home, Meghan Gehrig is more than happy to share with you some refreshing cocktail recipes which bring a whole new dimension to the winery’s fortified wines. ALBURY/WODONGA

The secret of Victoria’s designer linen wear is out AS the smallest of the mainland states, Victoria is somehow full of places with distinct charm and character. A special craft is going into everything from beer to designer clothing. A perfect example is the unique linen wear from Eva’s Sunday. The team takes their inspiration from the local community and it shows how a proud tradition of gorgeous quality garments goes hand in hand with the proud history of each location. The creative heart of the company – a combined studio, warehouse and office is situated in the scenic town of Myrtleford. The brand makes a point of using the beautiful landscapes of the area as a focal point of their promotions. Opening a store nearby in the picturesque and historic Beechworth was another way to be a part of the craft of the region. Like the town itself, Eva’s Sunday offers a fashion that stands the test of time rather than the ‘in thing’ this month and ‘out’ the next. By going beyond a simple seasonal approach to garment design, they have opted for pieces that work best layered to the local climate. Their story is one of passion for quality linen wear and a passion to be a part of local life. You can experience the exquisite designs of Eva’s Sunday seven days a week at their Myer Centrepoint store on David Street in the CBD of Albury and at the Beechworth store at 83 Ford Street six days a week (for more details – head to myercentrepoint.com.au or check their social media sites). BEECHWORTH

Haunting tours of the asylum HIDDEN away from prying eyes atop a lonely hillside on the outskirts of Beechworth’s historic town centre, Mayday Hills Asylum sits overlooking the town, waiting. In its 128 years of operation, there have been over 9000 recorded deaths, and likely many more than that, if the truth be known. Now, thanks to Asylum Ghost Tours – Beechworth, you can wander through its many twisted hallways and small, stifling rooms. Asylum Ghost Tours offers ghost tours, history tours, paranormal investigations, a haunted cinema experience, and regular sleepover events at the historic Mayday Hills Asylum in Beechworth, Victoria, in the midst of 11 hectares of heritage gardens. Let the experienced guides tell you all the secrets of the place, relax in a comfortable lounge chair to watch a horror double-feature, or come along to one of the sleepover events and stay the night. If you’ve previously visited, come back to explore some recentlyopened areas you may have never seen. Explore beyond doors that have been locked for decades, and see what few have experienced before.

While the sun shines, join the weekend daytime history tours to hear about the 128-year history of the buildings of the former asylum. You’ll hear stories of the opening of the facility, the many patients we still know about, and the final years of the ‘Lion of Beechworth’, as the asylum was known. After darkness falls, the tours of the dark, haunted buildings of the facility begin. Your host will guide you through the many abandoned hallways, cells, common rooms, surgeries, and isolation areas of the old asylum. The ghost tour encompasses facility history, memories, local tales, urban myths, and stories of the supernatural. For the more adventurous, paranormal investigations take place when all is quiet and the dead open their eyes. Groups experience two- or three-hour investigations, in an attempt to find out who or what still haunts the foreboding asylum. From experienced ghost-hunters to those who merely wonder at the whispered tales of hauntings, the promise of an entertaining exploration of the most haunted areas of all tempts many. For more information visit www. asylumghosttours.com.

COROWA/RUTHERGLEN

Gateway to the Murray region THE Corowa region offers visitors unique access points to Australia's mightiest river along with the magnificent landscapes and country plains in the west. With around 6000 people calling Corowa home, this historical town and regional centre is a great place to base yourself for all the adventures the Murray can offer. Corowa sits on a bend in the river, just across the border from the village of Wahgunyah in Victoria. The town’s proximity to land and water-based activities, as well as notable historical sites and worldclass food and wine, means visitors are spoilt for choice all year round. Surrounded by the majesty of the Australian bush, locals and visitors don’t waste the opportunity to get out into nature For the more active types, there are mountain bike and trail rides to keep the adrenaline pumping.

BIRTH OF A NATION: Celebrate Australia's federation at the annual Corowa Federation Festival in January. Walking tracks and hiking routes allow you to see the world at a slower pace, while birdwatchers can tick off some unique species just by standing still. For families, playgrounds,

skate parks and recreation reserves with barbecue facilities allow you and the family to kick back and enjoy some treasured time together. In town, there are beautiful

bowling greens, popular tennis courts and – perhaps best of all – the magnificent 27 hole championship golf course, that takes the ‘work’ out of working on your game. Positioned right on the river with stunning views, a wayward hook or slice could see your golf ball turn into fish fodder. There’s a cinema there, too, to catch up on the latest releases. Each year on the weekend closest to Australia Day, Corowa celebrates its place as the birthplace of Federation with the federation Corowa Festival. Visitors are treated to an array of fabulous bands, music and festival activities with markets, buskers, food and wine experiences, B and S Ball, and the old fashioned grand parade along Sanger Street. DEDERANG

The Alpine Shire’s only race day takes out award THE ever popular Dederang Races was recently awarded the 2018/2019 small race club of the year award at the Victorian Picnic Racing Awards. The award recognises the successful move to autumn racing in 2019. Most importantly the award acknowledges the hard work of the volunteers who run the event. The Dederang Races directly benefits the local community groups with all proceeds from the day supporting local groups such as the local CFA branches, football and netball club, cricket club and other community groups. The food vendors on site are also local businesses or clubs. The Dederang Races will be held on Saturday, March 14 2020. Organisers hope that with so many tourists being drawn to the Alpine Shire region for other events such as Brighter Days festival in Bright, Myrtleford Festival, Falls Creek regional world’s longest lunch and the Yack folk festival that visitors to the region may extend their stay in order to attend what is a unique social event, appear-

MANSFIELD & DISTRICT

Good things coming for Camille in the Kitchen CAMILLE Richard, owner of Camille in the Kitchen, has come a long way since opening her doors in April this year. However, it hasn’t been without hurdles and challenges – all of which have shaped Camille and her kitchen. “The first few months have been a challenge on all levels,” Camille said. On a business aspect, there weren’t many places offering plantbased products so she was unsure how the community would receive it. However, she has since been pleasantly surprised. “The community has welcomed the idea really positively,” she said. On a personal level, the café owner lost her husband and business partner this year which has forced her to see her business in a new light. “This challenge has brought me a different perspective,” she said. “I wanted to honour Daniel with keeping the spirit and soul of this business the way that we designed it. “He would be happy to see that we made it – he is with me every day, and pushes me to improve.” Camille will launch a new menu, which will be offering some new and healthy breakfast and lunch options such as Buddha bowls, curries and sweet treats.

“Of course, because I am French I will make crepes,” she said. Camille will also be offering her customers a new and nutritious take home range for those who want healthy meals on the go. “I am busy cooking them at the moment,” Camille said. As well as take home meals, Camille in the Kitchen has recently launched a range of pesto, almond milk, chocolate mousse and hummus. “We launched these products about a month ago, and they have been really successful,” she said. MANSFIELD & DISTRICT

The tradition continues THE quiet little hamlet of Tolmie will come alive on Saturday, February 8, 2020 when it hosts the 134th Tolmie Sports - a country event which started out as a school picnic sports day back in 1886. Many of the original events are still held today, such as the foot races, the dog jump, the wood chopping and the equestrian events - and these are as popular as ever. What can you expect from a day at the 134th Tolmie Sports? Aside from the novelty events and foot races for adults and children, there will be plenty of country fun - with raffles, guessing competitions and entertainment for all, including Trixie the clown, bash the rat, face painting, local historical and craft displays, the cross cut saw event, egg toss, gumboot toss etc., pony rides and the ipping disc dogz. The MansďŹ eld SES will give a road rescue demonstration and display, along with displays from the Fergie Club, artisan blacksmith, Craig Eury from Jamieson, and a perennial favourite - the pioneer bush furniture display with Brian Beasley; all are very popular with both locals and visitors.

NO EASY WAY: (from left) Brad Turner and Brad Hains showing real muscle in the twohand sawing event at Tolmie Sports. The axemen and equestrian programs run throughout the day; one of the big highlights being the three man challenge event, involving a race between teams - each consisting of an axeman, a runner and a horse and rider. The day will also include one of the most anticipated and loved events - the dog jump.

There will be a bar, along with lots of stalls and food outlets selling yummy wholesome country tucker to suit all tastes, or you can bring along a picnic and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere and spirit of a good old fashioned country sports day. The Tolmie Mechanics Institute Hall will double as the tearooms for the day, where you can take some quiet time out to relax and enjoy homemade sandwiches and cakes, and a Devonshire tea with the best scones in the North East. You can keep up to date with all that is happening on Tolmie Sports Day, on the Facebook page - tell your friends to come along and experience a day you will always remember. The Tolmie Sports is generously supported by local businesses in Tolmie, and in and around MansďŹ eld. All proďŹ ts are returned to the community and to the ongoing yearly production of the Tolmie Sports.
