MOUNT Buffalo has some of the best and most accessible snow in Victoria and it’s free (there are no resort fees to enter the national park). Located only a 45 minute drive from Porepunkah and Bright, Mount Buffalo is “North East Victoria’s Winter Wonderland” and has extensive areas of snow at both Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley for snow play, tobogganing, cross country skiing or simply enjoying the amazing views. There is a warm and friendly café and day shelter at Dingo Dell Day Shelter where the Mount Buffalo Ski School is based and where there is excellent tobogganing for children and families. They also have marked and back country snowshoe trails (and snow shoes for hire at the Ski School Shop) plus amazing snow hikes to the top of the Hump and the lookout at Dingo Dell. Mount Buffalo Ski School run regular snowshoe rambles each Saturday afternoon at 2.30 pm (plus Wednesdays over school holidays). Backcountry ski trails include the longer reservoir road trail, where the Mount McLeod and Rocky Creek ski trails also take you further out backcountry. There are also a number of back country ski and

snowshoe trails accessible out of Cresta Valley. See www.visitmountbuffalo.com.au .

GUIDANCE: Whatever your age, you can learn the fundamentals of cross country skiing at Mount Buffalo Ski School.

The ski school has a range of affordable snow clothes for those that might have forgotten winter warmers, and also have toboggans and snow shoes for hire. MBSS offer advertised and by arrangement cross country ski lessons and tours, snow shoe tours, snow hikes, intermediate and advanced back country ski tours/tuition and supervised snow camping activities. See www.mountbuffaloskischool.com.au. In snow season 2019 they will also be offering “Hok” ski tours and hire (cross between a ski and a snow shoe with a fixed “skin”). Ski school director David Chitty has been working and skiing on Mount Buffalo (also at Falls Creek and Mount Hotham) for 34 years. A retired Infantry and Special Forces officer, David has extensive experience in cross country, back country skiing and snow camping. AS its very name suggests, winter is an ideal time to visit Dinner Plain’s Blizzard Brewing Company. The venue’s cosy ambience and welcoming atmosphere greets those who are in the area enjoying the winter snow, and is also ideal to just socialise and settle in for a spell. Having celebrated their third birthday and now entering their fourth winter - they have brewed more than two dozen different beers, with 10 on tap this season. Blizzard Brewing Company’s Mark Hubbard says the brewery crafts beer exclusively with snow melt drawn from large underground acquifers, giving the end product purity and crispness. Blizzard Brewing Company has many beers to try, including their Who’s Ros and Trevor North East Ale, Avalanche Amber Ale, Summit Stout,

and 1550 Lager varieties. The Who’s Ros and Trevor is only brewed once a year at hop harvest time, and many other seasonals are also brewed only once a year. This season they are expanding the seating downstairs, and will have a food truck serving comfort food such as buffalo wings and sliders. The business is just a stone’s throw from skiing fun, with the brewery site at 5 Cattle Pen Drive, Dinner Plain being just 50m from the Cobungra ski lift. The brewery has won multiple awards for their beer, and were recently rated #21 in a list of the top brew pubs in Australia. For more information on the company’s impressive range of beers, see the website on www.blizzardbrewing.com or check out the Blizzard Brewing Facebook and Twitter pages.

THERE is something for everyone in Mt Stirling’s natural alpine environment. Mt Stirling is adjacent to Mt Buller in the Victorian High Country. This family affordable, ski and snow play resort is just a 45 minute drive from MansďŹ eld. Snowfalls transform this gem of a mountain into a winter wonderland. Listen to owing crystal-clear alpine streams, take a break in one of the Cattleman’s Huts and be amazed at the beauty of the vast views from its open summit. The sheltered ski trails (40kms) are some of the longest and most sheltered groomed trails in Austral-

ia, providing thrills and excitement for all level of skiers. The resort is staffed by a professional full-time ski patrol, just in case you need help. Ski lessons are available, and are always a good idea, whether you are a beginner or more proďŹ cient. CULTURE AND ART: A visit to the Michelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art is essential.

PHOTO: Simon Shiff.

A world away from the city

IF you are a wine enthusiast who is looking for a tranquil vineyard destination with wide appeal, Mitchelton Estate could be the place for you. Located just 90 minutes from Melbourne, Mitchelton feels like a world away from the city. Since its inception in 1969, Mitchelton has built a proud history of quality amassed around a portfolio of world class wines crafted from the estate and Heathcote vineyards. North East Tourist News - Winter 2019

TN040619_Page012.indd 12

The expansive Mitchelton property comprises Mitchelton Winery, the award winning cellar door, the Mitchelton Hotel, The Day Spa at Mitchelton, Muse Restaurant, the iconic Ashton Tower, the Ministry of Chocolate Café, the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art and the Cellar function spaces. One of the newest additions to the Mitchelton property has been the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art. Featuring over 30 works, includ-

ing significant pieces from some of Australia’s most revered indigenous artists, the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art pays homage to the Taungurung region, whose people are the traditional custodians of the land that Mitchelton occupies. The gallery is a partnership with curator Adam Knight and Gerry Ryan, and was created to provide an inspiring new space for locals and visitors to experience the creative expression of Australia’s First People.

A permanent feature of the gallery is the Message Stick Vehicle, a Land Rover former off-road ambulance from the Vietnam War, which was adorned with paintings from over 200 Aboriginal artists during its journey across Australia. The Message Stick Vehicle has been recognised as a totemic symbol of unity and peace, and endorsed by Nelson Mandela and Gough Whitlam. To find out more about Mitchelton Estate, see www.mitchelton.com.au.

Make the trip to Rutherglen Estates

WINTER is the perfect time for meandering, enjoying the indoors and savouring those luscious red and fortified wines. Rutherglen Estates’ impressive cellar door offers a relaxed ambience that the Aboriginal Exhibitions Gallery helps to create, while you taste award winning wines and browse through the gallery. The gallery is a must see and will impress the harshest of critics. With exhibitions changing seasonally, a new one is due to open in late June. If you are after a bite to eat then tucked behind the historic facade, hidden from view, is the Tuileries cafe and courtyard. Open for breakfast and lunch everyday, it is a great place to relax. If dinner is what you are looking

for, then Tuileries Restaurant is a must for any visitor to the area. Renowned for its delicious regional cuisine and high standard of service, you will find some very discerning food and wine matches. Winery Walkabout (June 8-9) is Australia’s oldest wine festival and is the perfect way to sample the best of what the region has to offer. Rutherglen Estates and Tuileries have teamed up to offer live music out the front on the lawn, great food and of course, a wonderful selection of wine. Chill out away from the crowds and enjoy what the festival has to offer. Tickets for Winery Walkabout must be pre-purchased and can be bought online at www.winerywalka-

LOOK TO THE SKY: Delatite Winery will be holding a stargazing night this June.

Stunning time to visit Delatite Winery WINTER in the High Country is stunning and it’s especially so at Delatite Winery, where you can taste up to 28 different wines from one of Australia’s prestigious “5 Red Star Wineries” (James Halliday), all while drinking in one of the most spectacular views you will ever hope to find. Of course, all wines taste better with food. Try their range of beautiful pizzas,

platters and hot nourishing soups and casseroles, all made from local ingredients, available all day. This winter sees numerous events at the cellar door ranging from the annual Bonfire night on Saturday, June 8, where you can enjoy live music, hot winter rolls, mulled wines and warming soups, and of course amazing red wines while warming yourself in front of the district’s biggest bonfire.

Winter Stargazing with Matt Dodds will take place on Sunday, June 9. The winter night sky is absolutely spectacular in the High Country, and on June 9 there will be an amazing, professionally guided stargazing experience with six high powered telescopes. You will be able to see Jupiter and Saturn’s rings and many other wonders.

August features a Wine Blending Day at the winery. Guided by their winemaker, participants first learn about how he creates the special blends that become Delatite Winery’s award winning wines. Then they create their own special blend of red wine. Enjoy a “look behind the curtain” of the magic of winemaking.

David Ritchie and family are pleased to be able to share the landscape and vineyard with visitors and wine lovers alike! Join us in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, below Mt Buller for a wine tasting with spectacular views, cellar door only wines, platters using local produce and pizzas. Delatite is open for tastings, sales and lunches daily. 7 days a week 10am to 5pm.

Right royal feast for the whole family WEEKEND Fit For a King, the immersive food and wine festival for all ages, is returning to the King Valley by popular demand this Queen’s Birthday long weekend, on June 8-9. The festival coincides with the King Valley Balloon Festival, as well as the King Valley Art Show, and is shaping up to be a right royal feast for the whole family. Join the winemaking families of the King Valley to taste new and museum release, cool-climate, premium-quality wines. Feast on artisan local produce and hearty family recipes at ten participating wineries throughout the region. Be entranced by a mass of hot air balloons floating in the mist over the valley each morning, and in the evening enjoy a mug of hot mulled wine as they light up the sky in tune to music at the family friendly Brown Brothers Night Glow.

Reflect on the creativity and talent of artists at the King Valley Art Show, held at King River Brewing. Tickets to Weekend Fit For a King are $25 per person (kids play free). Festival ticket includes souvenir tasting glass or reusable coffee cup. Festival highlights: In conjunction with King Valley Balloon Festival, there’ll be hot air balloon displays at four venues on Sunday afternoon - Dal Zotto, Politini, King River Estate and King River Brewing. Sweet, savoury and delicious

THERE will be something for everyone on the cellar door wine lists and menus at Glenrowan’s Trails, Tastings and Tales food and wine festival to be held over the three days of Queen’s Birthday weekend - June 8-10. “We have a special weekend planned and some impressive wines to sip and savour,” said Glenrowan marketing officer, Jennifer Booth. “The region has a reputation for fruit driven, full-bodied and flavour intensive white, red and fortified wines that will tempt with some sparkling wines also on the list. “With vintage completed, there will be some promising wines for future release, so it is time to celebrate. “An additional feature for the festival this year is the unique sculpture trail along the Glenrowan wine trail. “Regional artist, Pam Procter, gains inspiration from the Warby Range for her artistic expression in a variety of mediums. “Follow the sculpture trail of her limestone carvings and exhibits on the June long weekend that display her talent and diversity,” Ms Booth said. “Tick a thrilling air balloon ride off your bucket list with the wonderful experience of a tethered ride available during the festival. “Fabulous winter fare options will be on the cellar door menus with lots of delicious warming dishes to entice and pair with your wine choice.

“The local brewery will offer some specialty beers to excite the palate and some easy-drinking beers on tap to soothe and savour. “The Glenrowan Community and Craft Market will be held in the township on Monday June 10 at Lions Park with a diversity of stalls to accommodate all interests,” said Ms Booth. “The winemakers are very proud of their historical region and the signature wines that they meticulously craft. “Each winery will offer an assortment of cellar door entertainment for the whole family including some great live acts on the weekend program.” The Glenrowan tasting glass costs $10 and is required for tastings during the three-day festival at each of the participating wineries. Visitors can start and finish the wine trail at their winery of choice. One lucky weekend visitor will win a mixed dozen of premium Glenrowan wines delivered free to their door. No BYO alcohol or food and no coaches this weekend. Mini buses are welcome with prebooking a good idea. Participating wineries and brewery: Baileys of Glenrowan, Booths Taminick Cellars, Morrisons of Glenrowan and Black Dog Brewery. For more information see www. visitglenrowan.com.au.

Indulge in heartwarming fortifieds and full flavoured red wines IF you love a winery with history, then John Gehrig Wines is for you. John, a fourth generation winemaker, established the vineyard and winery on the banks of the King River, Oxley in 1976; nestled in the Milawa Gourmet Region. John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the next winemaking generation of Gehrigs to craft fine wines. Ross has an obsession with producing the best grapes to produce wines of distinction that will pay homage to this iconic North East Victorian winery. In 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s original birthplace – Rutherglen - was too strong, thus Ross, with wife Meghan, have expanded to a new vineyard and

cellar door site in Gooramadda (east Rutherglen). With the frosts of winter creeping over the vineyard, their attention in the vineyard turns to

pruning, and in the winery they are busy bottling the wines they have created from the 2019 harvest. “Harvest went well, yes yields were slightly down due to the hot

spring and summer in 2018, but on the other hand the flavours were the winner,” Meghan said. If you are planning a trip to either cellar door this season, it is a great time to try some heartwarming fortified wines and full flavoured red wines. A new release for the range is their straight reserve RG 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon which will match your favourite winter hearty casserole. So if you enjoy a wide range of diverse wines -why not come and see John Gehrig Wines this season when you are out enjoying North East Victoria at Rutherglen or Oxley. Discovering solace in the beauty of every day THIS year’s Kerferd Oration will be delivered by writer, director, performer – and dedicated walker - Ailsa Piper. Ailsa has navigated solitary trails in Australia, Spain and France, sometimes walking alone for weeks at a time. When she’s not on the roads, Ailsa is writing - plays, books, newspaper articles, poetry and letters. Ailsa uses every medium she can to celebrate creativity, walking, landscapes, connection and friendship. “We have the capacity as communities and as individuals to create sanctuaries where beauty can light the darkness of our despair,” says Ailsa. “I’d like to explore some of those possibilities in Beechworth.” As well as being a published author, Ailsa has judged the NSW and Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards seven times. She is an accomplished moderator of conversations and panels, and writes journalism and opinion pieces for newspapers and magazines. The annual Oration is a free community event sponsored by Indigo Shire Council, La Trobe University, WAW Credit Union and Quercus Beechworth. The 2019 Kerferd Oration will be held on Sunday 28 July, 11am at The George Kerferd Hotel, Mayday Hills, Beechworth. A free community lunch will be followed by a facilitated discussion for those who wish to continue the conversation. Priority entry tickets are available at: www.2019oration.eventbrite.com.au. THE 29th Kangaroo Hoppet will be held on Saturday, August 24 at Falls Creek. The Hoppet, as it is affectionally known, is an international cross country ski marathon (42km) and is part of the prestigious Worldloppet series of popular cross country ski races. The Worldloppet series consists of the premier race of each major

Organisers expect over 1000 skiers in this year’s event, with approximately 10-15 per cent from overseas. AGL is the major sponsor and the organisers partner with the Falls Creek Alpine Resort to make

this event the biggest international skiing event in the southern hemisphere. From Olympians to young children, the Hoppet caters for all levels of ability, and is great as a spectator event as well. For more information visit www. hoppet.com.au or email info@hoppet.com.au.

Embrace the darkness at Bright Brewery

BRIGHT Brewery is thrilled to announce that Darker Days 2019 will set Bright alight on Saturday, June 29. Darker Days is a festive celebration of dark beer and the Alpine winter, providing a warming, welcome respite from the mid-winter chill. The event will kick off at midday on the block next to Bright Brewery, with live music and entertainment throughout the day and evening, culminating in the lighting of a ceremonial bonfire after dark. With kids’ entertainment including stories and music under the Children’s Tipi, face-painting, wooden toys, and ghost tours, Darker Days is a proudly family-friendly event. As is tradition, Bright Brewery’s acclaimed Stubborn Russian Imperial Stout will be launched at Darker

Days, making festival-goers the first in the country to get their hands on this cult classic. Bright Brewery Head Brewer Reid Stratton said Stubborn Russian had an incredibly loyal following and beer-lovers should be excited for the 2019 vintage. “We’re doing things a little bit differently this year and the stout will be steeped in oak after fermentation to give it a lusciously roasted finish,” Stratton said. The 2017, 2018 and 2019 vintages of Stubborn Russian will be pouring from Bright Brewery’s taps during Darker Days, giving visitors the chance to “collect” all three beers. Bright Brewery marketing officer Laura Gray said interest in Darker Days had already started to build and the brewery was planning for

Many updates at Falls Creek

THERE are a few updates coming to Falls Creek this season, particularly in their ski-in, ski-out alpine village. In terms of food and beverage there is an exciting new bar opening at local hotspot Elk at Falls. Already renowned for Barry Iddles’ fare at Elk Restaurant, Elk has converted one of its apartments to open as a mysterious after dark bar hidden behind a luxe emerald curtain. The owners describe it as “An après and late-night New York-style, 50 seat lounge and bar. “Designed by the coolest and most talented, Coy Yiontis Architects, Apartment 3 boasts luxurious finishes, sensory lighting and curated playlists to keep you grooving into the night.” The Man Hotel is also under new ownership and visitors can expect this village favourite to turn the clock back with more live music slated to join refurbishments to the bar. Out and about, a new addition

CONVENIENT: Thanks to Falls Creek’s major sponsorship deal with BMW, a number of priority parking spots will be made available to BMW drivers in winter 2019. PHOTO: Matt Hull has been made to the village’s series of public artwork pieces. Joining the Throne of Skis at Windy Corner and Big Fella tank artwork is a custom art piece in the Slalom Plaza waterfall – a larger than life wren constructed from recycled skis collected by the resort. Falls Creek has implemented a ski reuse program, turning discarded skis and snowboards into eye-catching

artworks throughout the alpine village. Two new “ski fences” have been constructed during the summer months, repurposing over 400 skis that would otherwise have been designated for landfill. Skis have been sourced from rental outlets at Falls Creek, and also the Alpine Shire region as part of this project.

Serving Resort Management’s dedication to sustainability, the ski fences have been constructed by resort staff in areas including a popular thoroughfare to Falls Creek Road, expected to become a point of interest this winter. Falls Creek Resort Management’s asset manager, Rachael Gadd, says the organisation’s Environmental Management Plan includes a recognised goal of 50 per cent landfill diversion by the year 2020, a goal that looks well in reach with current rates at 46 per cent. Finally, BMW drivers will benefit from the resort’s major sponsorship deal with a number of priority parking spots made available to BMW drivers in winter 2019. BMW VIP Parks will be located alongside QT Falls Creek and Ropers Apartments and will allow BMW drivers to park overnight without using the long term parking zones. GLENROWAN

Explore Glenrowan SITUATED between Wangaratta and Benalla, Glenrowan is famous for its links to a certain well-known bushranger, but there is so much more to this little hamlet than what happened in 1880. Today, Glenrowan is a town that not only embraces its history, but looks to the future with ďŹ ne regional wines and delicious local produce on offer as well as warm hospitality, tourist attractions and stunning bushland and natural landscapes. The Glenrowan wine region has a long and rich winemaking history, as 130 years of winemaking has established the region’s reputation for full-bodied reds, fragrant whites and fortiďŹ eds, and the region’s cellar doors are cosy and welcoming to wine lovers. The cellar doors are intimate and welcoming, many offering casual fare on weekends featuring local produce and delicacies.

Glenrowan itself also has several dining options to suit travellers and locals alike, and you can also have fun browsing the local shops, which sell everything from souvenirs to local food and vintage ďŹ nds, or wander the local historic attractions to ďŹ nd out more about the town’s rich history. There are also several fruit orchards and growers in the area producing various delicious fresh produce to tempt the tastebuds. Nearby natural attractions include the Warby Ovens National Park, the Winton Wetlands and more, offering many options for a picturesque picnic spot, bird watching and bushwalking, as well as vantage points and lookouts including Ryan’s Lookout, Mt Glenrowan and Salisbury Falls. Whatever activity you choose, there is plenty to explore and enjoy in Glenrowan and district.

New and exciting at Buller in 2019

THERE will be so much that is new to see when you visit Mt Buller during the snow season in 2019. Among the highlights this winter is their new $6m chairlift, which will whisk you up Bourke Street in just over two minutes. Their new Park and Ride service will help save motorists the worry of driving in the snow during peak season in July and August and can be booked online. Mt Buller is celebrating 70 years of lifted skiing this winter, so be on the lookout for fun celebrations of this milestone. A new mini SnowFactory is set to top up the cover in the snowplay parks and at the Ski and Snowboard School, The Village Snowplay Park has been regraded to create three new runs of varying lengths and fun for all ages. The new platter lift has replaced the old Canyon Rope Tow this winter, making the ride from Chamois to Standard so much smoother. Chamois Run now also features brilliant stadium quality lighting to enable thrilling night-time expression sessions and Olympic training day and night.

King Valley proves fertile ground for artists THE King Valley has certainly crept up the “go to” places on everyone’s get away lists. And the great combination of art and wine has set the King Valley on this path of success for over 20 years. As with winemakers, the King Valley has proven to be a fertile ground for artists. The 2018 King Valley Art Show

boasts the following amazing accomplishment: 40 per cent of participating artists either sold a work or won a prize. There were 72 works sold and $16,750 won in prizemoney. In 2019, prizemoney has reached $17,250, including a grand prize of $3000 sponsored by Dal Zotto Wines and this is sure to attract about 400 entries by some 150 artists.

Patronage over the three day event reaches approximately 1100 people including 200 at the Friday night Gala Opening (bookings essential). Visitors can expect to see another spectacular display in 2019 featuring a wide variety of styles, subject matter and mediums, from landscapes, portraits and still life, to watercolours, prints and from

impressionist to abstract works, with most available to purchase at affordable prices. The King Valley Art Show will be held from June 8 to June 10 at King River Brewing, opening to the public from 10am until 5pm from Saturday until Monday with entry $3 for adults. More information is available at www.kingvalleyartshow.com.au.

STRATHBOGIE RANGES

GOLDEN HOUR: The beautiful view from the new Visitor Information Centre in Nagambie.

New home for Nagambie Visitor Information Centre IT was with great anticipation that Strathbogie Shire Council opened the doors of its new Visitor Information Centre in Nagambie recently. The timing of the opening was impeccable, with the centre all geared up for the Easter period and the hugely successful GoFish Nagambie tournament over the Anzac Day weekend, which brought over 650 people through the doors of the centre. The newly built facility is the result of a partnership between council and Nagambie Development Enterprises, who has also constructed the Nagambie Brewery and Distillery which opened in February and is attracting visitors from far and wide. The modern, open layout of the information centre more effectively incorporates Council Customer Service and Visitor Information Services and is situated in prime position at the end of Jacobson’s Outlook, overlooking the stunning lake and iconic Black Caviar statue. Strathbogie Shire mayor and Nagambie Lakes ward councillor Amanda McClaren said it is great to have the new facility to service the volumes of visitors coming to Nagambie and surrounds. “We’re not surprised we’re seeing more and more people choosing Nagambie as a holiday destination,” Cr McClaren said. “You’ve got the peace and tranquillity of country life, beautiful wineries and of course the gorgeous Lake Nagambie, and only 90 minutes from Melbourne.” The Visitor Information Centre also provides Council Customer Service to residents and ratepayers, such as lodging a request, paying rates or registering animals. The new Visitor Information Centre is located at 293 High Street, Nagambie. Opening Hours 10am – 4pm, seven days a week (for tourist information) 10am - 4pm, Monday- Friday (for Council Customer Service)

THE Y Water Discovery Centre @Yea Wetlands is a multi-purpose facility incorporating an accredited Visitor Information Centre and interactive environmental interpretive displays to inform visitors about the importance of water resource management and local wetland ecology. Open seven days a week, the centre is staffed by a team of 40 local volunteers who share their skills, passion and knowledge of Yea and the Murrindindi region to the many visitors passing through each week. The centre also incorporates a gift shop stocking a wide range of products for sale including books, maps, games and toys, jewellery, skincare, local produce and clothing. Many of the items are hand-crafted by local artisans and producers who offer a unique and very special range of products. Outside the centre is the impressive indigenous garden Badji Baanang (pronounced ba-dji baanang) meaning ‘Oasis” in Taungurung language. The plants found in the garden are representative of plants found across Taungurung country and the garden also incorporates information about indigenous plants and the species that depend on these plants for survival, including local birds and butterflies. Local volunteer guides lead these tours, which include a delicious Devonshire tea featuring locally grown and made produce. The Y Water Discovery Centre will play host to a number of events and activities over the year, so keep an eye on the Facebook page, visit www. ywatercentre.com.au or call (03) 5797 2663 for further information.
