Seize the Day with art IF you need an additional reason to visit Beechworth or are looking for something to stimulate your mind during September, the Old Beechworth Gaol is hosting an exhibition of collages that comment on significant events from history and the present day. Renowned Beechworth artist, Alan Phillips presents 40 years of work in Carpe Diem – Collages from the Diaries as his interpretation of people seizing the day. Whether they be quirky, dramatic or life-changing, Alan documents such events as The Evolution of the Vespa, 9/11, Nirvana and the Uluru Handback, just to name a few. Alan has spent 40 years maintaining visual diaries. The collages, some measuring 400 x 1500mm, feature pages from his diaries
and materials gathered from cities around the world. As a recognised artist in the North East of Victoria and in the Northern Territory, Alan is known for his landscapes, including paintings after the 2009 fires and in the NT for his desert paintings from central Australia. His works are contained in permanent collections in the NT and Vic. Alan is a prolific chronicler of current affairs and this once-off exhibition features 32 works. Carpe Diem – Collages from the Diaries will open on Friday, September 14 at 6pm in the Old Beechworth Gaol, Beechworth. It will then run from 10am to 2pm daily until September 24. Entry is free. Old Beechworth Gaol tours operate daily at 11am.
COMPLEX WORK: One of Alan’s collage pieces, entitled Princess Di - A Shakespearian tragedy (580x500mm).

Sample the best at Rutherglen Wine Show
ONE of the longest running wine shows in Australia, the Rutherglen Wine Show, is happening once again this spring. It is presented to you by the Rutherglen Agricultural Society in conjunction with The Winemakers of Rutherglen. The show consists of a series of events aimed at judging some of the best wines in the country. To begin with, judging will take place from September 17-21, with the stringent judging process producing bronze, silver, gold and trophy winners. Public events commence with the presentation dinner at Rutherglen’s Memorial Hall on Thursday, September 27, with pre dinner drinks from 6pm and dinner and presentations from 7pm-12am. Throughout the course of the evening the chairman will present all trophies won during the current show to representatives from the winning wineries. By attending you will be treated
TOP DROP: Rutherglen showcases some of Australia’s finest wine every spring. to a five-course fine dining experience, prepared by Rutherglen’s Pickled Sisters Restaurant.
Each course is individually paired with award winning wines from past year’s shows.
Tickets cost $165 and are limited, and bookings are essential. The public tasting for the show takes place on Friday, September 28, at the Henderson Pavilion, Rutherglen Park at 171 High Street between 6–10pm. Sample some of the country’s and region’s best table, sparkling and fortified wines, including award and trophy winners of 2018 show, paired with selected locally produced hot and cold finger foods. Tickets are $65 per person and limited to 215 spots and includes a results book showing all the winners and winners scores and the hot and cold finger foods. The public tasting is usually a sell out, so get in quick. There will also be a wine sale from 7-9am on Sunday, September 30, which is an opportunity to purchase excellent wine at bargain prices. Get in early or miss out. For more information, see www. rutherglenwineshow.com.au.
Rutherglen comes to Melbourne RUTHERGLEN winemakers are returning to Melbourne on Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23 for Rutherglen in the City 2018. The two-day wine event at The Atrium in Fed Square will bring the essence of Rutherglen to the heart of Melbourne with a pop-up wine and cocktail bar alongside our region’s 17 winery cellar doors. Rutherglen in the City offers more than the average wine tasting event without the hassle of prebooking or purchasing tickets. Simply purchase your Winemak-
ers of Rutherglen glass for $5 from the bar upon arrival (this is your glass for the day and is yours to keep) and wander from cellar door to cellar door tasting our worldfamous Rutherglen Muscat, bold Durifs, playful sparkling reds and alternative aromatic whites. Then, settle in to enjoy a bite to eat and a glass (or more) from the bar, all while soaking up the atmosphere with live music. For more information, search for Rutherglen in the City on Facebook or see www.winemakers.com.au.

Generations of wine history
IF a winery with history is what you’re searching for, then John Gehrig Wines has plenty on offer. As a fourth generation winemaker, the late John Gehrig came from one of Victoria’s oldest wine making families, with his ancestors originally settling in Barnawartha in the late 1850’s. John established a vineyard on the banks of the King River in Oxley in 1976, with the fifth generation of Ross and his wife Meghan opening their Rutherglen operation at Gooramadda in 2011. The locations provide varied conditions for the vines to mature and thrive, with the Oxley location producing varieties of riesling, chardonnay, pinot noir, and merlot to name a few, while the Rutherglen location is renowned for their heavy red wines producing varieties like cabernet sauvignon, durif and shiraz and of course fortified wines, like

John’s son Ross has taken on the challenge of guiding the next winemaking generation of Gehrigs in the art of crafting fine wines. With a strong belief that producing quality fruit, leads to wines of distinction, Ross combines the best of current day science, with the tried and tested winemaking tricks of old to guide the fine fruit into fine wines.
This is a strategy used by the Gehrigs to both appease the past generation, and to also encourage and inspire future generations of wine lovers. Winemaking and managing their dual winery locations is a year round exercise, with each season providing an important step in growing their range and brand. At a first glance in the spring, it may appear that there is not much
happening; however the vineyard proves to be a hive of activity. With the pruning of vines to encourage summer fruit now almost complete, events are scheduled to introduce wine lovers to the varied range on offer. Weddings are scheduled for most weekends, and exciting festivities are planned for the weekend of the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival. Year after year, John Gehrig Wines has a booth located in Ford Street near the free Main Stage, providing an opportunity for wine and music lovers alike to enjoy a wine-tasting. On the Monday the festivities continue at the winery in Oxley, with the sounds of Sabina and the red vans and a catered lunch on site. Summer Beer Fest returning to QEII Square
BEER lovers rejoice as organisers today announced exciting changes for the 2nd Great Australian Beer Festival (GABF) when it returns to Albury’s QE11 Square on Saturday, December 1. Last year was the inaugural festival and featured a colourful range of pop up bars and food trucks. The event attracted 2700 people with organisers saying it was well supported by a strong local and regional attendance with some visitors travelling from as far away as Brisbane. GABF is a tasting and appreciation celebration of beers and ciders with patrons purchasing 100 or 200ml tastings from breweries set up in colourful pop-up bars throughout the park. Festival co-founders and Austral-
ian Beer Ambassadors’ Directors Michael Ward and Kieran Blood are excited about this year’s event. “For this year’s festival we’ve found some new and exciting brewers, we’re adding a piano / cabaret bar to the entertainment mix and creating new and engaging master-
classes,” Michael said. “GABF Albury 2018 will be all about discovering new beers, new adventures and new friends.” The festival recently received NSW government funding and according to Kieran this will be used to attract more visitors from outside

The theme of the Tattoo is the celebration of Armistice Day in World War 1 – music and selected stories from the era re-enacted through the eyes of a family between 1914 and 1918. It’s the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on the Sunday. A new feature will be the Friday night Celtic Concert at the Old Gaol featuring Damien Leith, winner of the 2006 “Australian Idol”, Eric Bogle and Claymore over a 3 hour timeframe. For the non-concert goers the popular Celtic Dinner will also again be staged at the Old Priory on Friday featuring the piping of the Haggis. Saturday will see the Highland Bands March from the Police Paddocks to the Old Gaol and there will be plenty of other music, poetry and story-telling at a range of venues from mid-morning till

New challenge rises from the gravel trails of Bright
NORTH East Victoria’s growing popularity as a cycling adventure destination has received another boost with the new event 5Zero, to be held on Saturday, September 8. 5Zero is a fresh social ride challenge, centred around conquering the 50 kilometre gravel trails course from Bright to the epic Clear Spot lookout, with the event organisers aiming for zero environmental impact. The event will also raise funds for Alpine Community Planation (ACP), the community-led not-for-profit body that allows recreational activities to take place within the HVP pine plantations of the Alpine Shire, where 5Zero will be run. Event organiser, Marthijs Heuperman from Bright Brewery, says the new event was born from a desire
ALL ACTION: Unique gravel trails through pine plantations. to support the community with a fun adventure activity driven by sustainable practices. ”5Zero is about bringing together a great charitable cause with the amazing views and experience provided by riding the trails around
Bright,” said Mr Heuperman. “We all ride for different reasons. “The fantastic gravel and mountain bike trails in this beautiful location makes for an awesome experience, which we want more people to enjoy.”
“Alpine Community Plantation do a lot to make this possible for the many locals and visitors to Bright, but they can always do with more assistance, so that’s how riding 5Zero can help.” Mr Heuperman explained that the zero footprint goal of running the event is aligned to Bright Brewery’s core values and ensures the protection of the alpine trails and environment for future generations to enjoy. The event provides three course options to cater for riders of all abilities. The main route will include 1300 metres of climbing over 53km. There are also 13km and 38km course options available. More information is available at www.5zero.com.au.

Entertaining festival in Mansfield
THE Mansfield High Country Festival is set to kick off for an exciting five days of entertainment from Friday, November 2 and continues until Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday November 6. The festival is set to go off with a bang on November 2, with the much anticipated festival fireworks. An annual crowd pleaser, locals and tourists alike gather to marvel at the display which proves to be more and more impressive each year. The events that make up the festival are an inspired range of activities put on by varied community groups and local businesses. Opportunities for celebration include village fairs, food and wine events, arts and exhibitions, parades, fireworks and a Half Marathon and Fun Run.
The festival is set to conclude with the Mansfield Cup race day. The Grand Parade is a 34 year old tradition of the festival, with community groups, businesses and individuals wearing specialised outfits and costumes to participate. The parade is a crowd favourite, old fashioned in nature, but considered authentic to the Mansfield community. The torchlight parade is an opportunity for the community to give thanks to their first responders. Fire volunteers are paraded in firetrucks and emergency services vehicles, allowing the community to show their appreciation for the tireless efforts given during the summer months. For further information on the Mansfield High Country Festival and events, visit www.highcountryfestival.com.au.
FUN FOR ALL: The Mansfield High Country Festival is a highlight on the local calendar.
Mt Buller announces new chairlift for 2019 MT Buller skiers and snowboarders will enjoy a new, faster ride up Bourke Street next winter with the exciting announcement of a $6 million, 6-seater high-speed chairlift for season 2019. The new lift replaces the legendary Blue Bullet quad chairlift
with an upgrade to a larger and faster 6-seater. This means less time waiting in lines and more time on the snow for Mt Buller skiers and boarders. “In 1983, Blue Bullet 1 & 2 were the first high-speed detachable quad chairlifts in the world,” said
Laurie Blampied, General Manager Buller Ski Lifts. “Local skiers and boarders will be a little sad to see Blue Bullet go as it’s been a big part of our mountain, but after moving a staggering 500,000 guests every winter - that’s 17 million passen-
gers in its 34 year lifetime – we think it’s time to retire. “There isn’t another chairlift in Victoria that has carried more passengers.” This will be the fourth new chairlift added to the network at Mt Buller since 2005.

WORK commenced in August to enhance infrastructure and signage at the historic Stringybark Creek Reserve, near Mansfield, to better reflect the historical importance of the site. Sergeant Michael Kennedy, and Constables Thomas Lonigan and Michael Scanlan, were killed at the reserve while searching for members of the Kelly Gang on October 26, 1878. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has been working with Victoria Police and other stakeholders to commemorate the lives of the fallen officers. “This is an extremely important site from both a historical perspective and for the families of the policemen who were killed there,” DELWP Senior Community Partnerships Officer, Catherine Spencer, said. “The project includes the construction of a new walking trail in the locality of where Sergeant Kennedy was killed and a fourth member of the police party, Constable McIntyre, escaped.” “We are also upgrading interpretive signs, and erecting three
individual memorials to the fallen police.” This year marks the 140th anniversary of the deaths of the policemen who were shot while searching for Ned and Dan Kelly in the Toombullup State Forest after warrants were issued for their arrest in 1878. The deaths of the three policemen marked an escalation in the search for the Kelly brothers and their associates Joe Byrne and Steve Hart. The four were declared outlaws and became known as the Kelly Gang. Following an extensive 20-month manhunt across Victoria and New South Wales, Ned Kelly was captured during the final confrontation between the gang and police at Glenrowan on June 28, 1880. Ned was later tried and hanged for the murder of Constable Lonigan, while his brother Dan, and associates Joe Byrne and Steve Hart perished in the siege. The works, which have been approved by Heritage Victoria, and are being undertaken by Forest Fire Management Victoria staff, are expected to be completed this spring.

Taste of the season at The Olive Shop
“The olive tree, what a beast! You can’t imagine how many problems it has caused me. “A tree full of colour, not too big, and its little leaves, how they’ve made me sweat! “A breath of fresh wind, and the whole tree changes its tonality, because the colour isn’t in the leaves, but in the space between them. “An artist can’t be great unless he understands the landscape. -Pierre-Auguste Renoir, letter to Paul Durand-Ruel, 1889 ARTICHOKE? Fox Run fun
THE Milawa and Oxley Primary Schools are getting ready for their fourth annual Fox Run to be held on Saturday October 20 at the Oxley Recreation Reserve. The Fox Run is a major fundraising initiative of the two schools, with last year attracting more than 1000 participants, and is a day where families and friends get outdoors and enjoy being active together. The Fox Run will again be held at the Oxley Recreation Reserve due to the bush features that are perfectly suited to an obstacle run. The major obstacles were made possible through a 2017 Rural City of Wangaratta community grant. The event includes the three different run lengths to choose from 2.5km, 5km and 7.5km as well as a major raffle called the Fox Drop. Each year the longer runs are attracting more participants and this
year event organisers have added a second wave in the 5km run. This year the schools are really excited that the event has retained its key event sponsors Sportsmans Warehouse 2.5km, Telstra 5km, Insite Real Estate 7.5km and Brown Brothers. The event also has the support also from 3NE/The Edge and Australian Caravan Hire. There is plenty of action on and off the course with live entertainment a jumping castle for kids and food stalls. Heliy offer joy ights for those who want to take in the course from the air. This year participants can watch their merchandise be printed onsite by Fobia Industries of Benalla. Tourists from Asia spreading their wings BY TATE SPITERI CHINESE and other Asian nationalities are moving away from city holidays to now seek a trip away based around uniqueness, authenticity and are quintessentially Australian, according to a Caravan Industry Australia study. While Alpine Shire Council hasn’t done any marketing into Asia, manager of economic and community development Elaine Burridge said there was no doubt an increasing number of Asian tourists were visiting the area. “Anyone who is local to the Alpine Shire will tell you any day of the week we now have Asian presence in town, which is fantastic,â€? she said. “If you look ďŹ ve years ago there

“A lot of those aren’t necessarily coming here straight off a plane wanting to see the High Country, but I think what we are getting is the dispersal of Asian people that are now living in Melbourne, whether that be for work or study. Ms Burridge said the ski resorts namely Mt Hotham and neighbouring Dinner Plain have too experienced a big spike in visitation by Asian nationalities. “They’ve done the Great Ocean Road, they’ve gone to see the penguins and all those other attractions they typically do and now what they’re doing is putting their wings out and exploring a bit further into the High Country, Ms Burridge said. Ms Burridge said opportunities to market the region into Asia was not out of the question in the future.

OFTEN overlooked as a transport option, Victoria’s regional rail network connects metro Melbourne to close to 100 regional locations across the state. And just on the Seymour line alone, there is plenty to see. Seymour Station Seymour is an historic railway township located in the sprawling Goulburn Valley wine region. Some of Australia’s most famous wineries, including Tahbilk, Mitchelton Wines, Fowles Wine and Wine by Sam feature in this region, which also has a Vietnam Veterans Comemmorative Walk, Seymour Railway Heritage Centre and Seymour and District Historical Society Museum. The Tastes of the Goulburn food and wine festival is hosted in October each year, showcasing the best local produce from the Goulburn Valley and Central Victoria. This unique festival offers the option to travel by steam rail from Melbourne. Nagambie Station Visitors to Nagambie will find themselves surrounded by leading wineries, fertile plains and sparkling waterways. In town, there is a statue of Black
Caviar, the legendary racehorse, who was born in Nagambie and remained undefeated throughout her racing career. Aside from the fine wine and gourmet produce on offer in this location, visitors can enjoy sailing and waterskiing on Lake Nagambie, which is also host to Australia’s national standard rowing and canoeing titles during summer. Euroa Station Euroa is located at the base of the Strathbogie Ranges and is home to historic buildings and stunning landscapes. Visitors can get outdoors and explore the Euroa Arboretum, wander indigenous gardens, fish for trout in the dam, and follow the sculpture walk. There are plenty of walks in and around Euroa, including the seven kilometre Apex, or Seven Creeks, walking track which takes people around the Balmattum Hill Walking Track. Travellers can then cool off at Polly McQuinns, a popular picnic and swimming spot where water spills over a weir and large granite boulders into a deep-water pool.

WANGARATTA
Strong lineup for Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues
AUSTRALIA’S foremost jazz and blues music festival, Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, to be held from November 2-4 in Wangaratta, has announced a stunning program of international and Australian artists to tempt travellers, lovers of live music and locals alike. This year’s program is the most internationally-diverse in the festival’s history, with the likes of electrifying UK blues guitarist Matt Schofield, US ‘sonic explorers’ FORQ, German jazz-hip-hop piano group Trio ELF, and, in a welcome return to Wangaratta for the first time since 2010, the Netherlands’ Yuri Honing Quartet. And the local line-up promises to be stronger and more inspiring than ever, featuring the world premiere of the Australian Art Orches-
KEY PERFORMER: Wilma Reading is among the artists performing at this year’s Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. tra’s new work, revered Indigenous Australian jazz vocalist Wilma Reading, all-female soul band Sweethearts, Ray Beadle coming out of retirement to perform on both jazz and blues stages with Clayton Doley and Red Hands, and Tina Harrod performing her lauded new album, City of Longing, as well as guest-starring on the beloved annual Jazz Mass program. Festival chair Mark Bolsius praised the artistic team—Zoe
Hauptmann, Frank Davidson, Scott Solimo and Adam Simmons—for creating a program jam-packed with fresh new faces, venerable favourites and award-winning musicians from the UK, US, France, Japan, Indonesia, the Czech Republic, India, The Netherlands, Germany, Sri Lanka, Canada and Australia. “This year really builds on the successful rebirth of the festival in 2017, when our new venues, partnerships, precinct layout and
programming team were universally endorsed by audiences, artists and music critics,” Mr Bolsius said. “Not only do we have the most diverse international line-up ever, but we continue to offer a worldclass Australian line-up, something that is unique to this festival. “With more than 300 musicians in over 80 concerts across eight concert locations, we promise there’s something for everyone. “We’re confident that we have the right mix of music, artists, stages and programming to satisfy and delight not just serious jazz and blues aficionados, but also tourists to northeast Victoria and of course our local music-lovers.” For more information, including ticket prices and booking details, see wangarattajazz.com.
