WANGARATTA FESTIVAL JAZZ & BLUES 2015
THE WANGARATTA FESTIVAL OF JAZZ & BLUES HAS BEEN A PART OF LOCAL LIFE FOR TWENTY-SIX YEARS, PROVIDING A CONSTANT PRESENCE AMIDST ALL THE CHANGES WE AS INDIVIDUALS AND A COMMUNITY HAVE EXPERIENCED IN THAT TIME. The unofficial Melbourne Cup “long weekend” is marked early in local diaries as a special time to gather friends and family, some of who have ventured far and wide, to reunite for a weekend of music and celebration. Equally, jazz and blues fans from around the country mark this weekend as a constant and reliable programme of exceptional live music performances. Through the hard work of many, including Artistic Director Adrian Jackson, the artistic integrity of the festival has only strengthened over these past twenty six years, and to be regarded as Australia’s premier jazz and blues festival is a proud and deserved achievement for organisers and performers, past and present. As the festival draws near, a palpable sense of anticipation builds and as spring’s flourish refreshes the landscape, locals get busy readying their homes and businesses to welcome friends, family and visitors alike.
enjoy, and we are a pretty generous lot! Like the surrounding springtime landscape, the festival will enjoy some renewal and refreshment of it’s own this year, with new spaces and programming offering festivalgoers a breath of fresh air. Amongst the changes, the beautiful King George Gardens will be an oasis for families to sit on a blanket of grass and enjoy the rhythms and sounds of the open-air stage. The festival relocating to the Riverside Precinct means the banks of the mighty Ovens River will be hopping with free music and entertainment, local food & drinks stalls and markets. An outstanding local and international jazz and blues line up is supported this year with the addition of a few ‘cross-over’ artists who will no doubt appeal to jazz & blues fans and the uninitiated alike!
Like the beautiful High Country landscape, the festival remains constant yet changing and we welcome you to Jazz country to enjoy It is a time when we proudly welcome you to those changes and to share some great our beautiful region to share all that makes us music and memorable moments with us and proud to call Wangaratta home; our friendly with your friends and families. streets and shops, the natural beauty of our High Country landscapes and the world-class Locals Area Pass gives unlimited access to all venues over the entire weekend for all regional produce, food and wine we are residents in north east Victoria. famous for. > A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
> A MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL CHAIR
Our regular patrons have come to expect Wangaratta Jazz & Blues will deliver certain core elements, and they are there this year for instance: > outstanding international bands like the Dave Douglas Quintet or Maqueque > you-have-to-be-there encounters between Australian and international artists (like Dave Douglas and Paul Grabowsky, or David Friesen and Mike Nock) > Australian jazz bands as diverse as Geoff Bull and The Finer Cuts, James Morrison’s Superband or the unique lineup performing Lloyd Swanton’s ‘Ambon’ > a blues lineup offering the chance to hear veterans like Canned Heat, Joe Camilleri or Russell Morris alongside stars of younger generations, like Harper or Ash Grunwald Even so, a lot of attention will focus on our new venue, the Hume Bank Gardens Stage. The programming challenge there was to book a program that would attract patrons beyond our usual ticket-buying audience, and send them home persuaded that jazz and blues can be accessible and fun - without sacrificing the artistic standards this festival has become renowned for. I believe the program for that venue meets that brief. I look forward to hearing whether our patrons agree!
Welcome to Jazz Country. It has been an interesting year for the Board as we have embarked upon a new direction for the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues. Wangaratta is very fortunate to have 3 great parks within the Central Business District. This year we will be utilising King George Gardens for the first time. This venue will provide a great “cross-over experience” for festival goers where you can hear some of the best blues and jazz the country has to offer in a relaxing atmosphere. Making these changes has not been easy and I would like to thank our Board Members for their dedication to doing all that is possible to make this year a success. None of this could happen without our tireless volunteers, our fantastic sponsors, our committed Friends of the Festival and a supportive Local Council and State and Federal Government support. Thank you all for your assistance and we look forward to this year with great enthusiasm. I hope that you have a wonderful time at this year’s new look festival, don’t forget to download the app, throw a few coins at the buskers, sing and dance in the Blues tent, chill out in the Gardens, be astonished at the Performing Arts Centre and …… simply have the best weekend in Jazz Country.

WELCOME TO THE WANGARATTA FESTIVAL OF JAZZ & BLUES 2015
> A MESSAGE FROM THE RURAL CITY OF WANGARATTA
> A MESSAGE FROM THE MEMBER FOR OVENS VALLEY
It is with pleasure that I welcome visitors and locals to the 26th Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues. The Festival is a jewel in our city’s crown, attracting thousands of visitors each year and bringing world class performers to the heart of North East Victoria. Each year the Festival evolves to ensure it meets the needs of visitors, locals and sponsors. Council is excited to support the changes this year which make the most of the city’s revitalised Ovens Riverside Precinct and the beautiful King George V Gardens. Having the free community stage shift to the Ovens Riverside Precinct will open up new possibilities for the festival and is sure to be a hit with the community. Each year an enormous amount of preparation goes into ensuring the festival is a success. The Festival board and artistic director Adrian Jackson work diligently planning the event a year in advance. Community members get behind the event, volunteering for the Festival and taking visitors into their homes as part of the Home Hosting program. I thank all those who make the Festival successful each year. As a major sponsor Council is proud to support the 26th Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues.
The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues, now in its 26th year, promises another fantastic line-up of international and home grown artists. The popularity of the Festival, calibre of musicians and involvement of so many community members is again on full display this year. The new format sees the Festival move from Reid Street to the Ovens Riverside Precinct in 2015, where the spirit of jazz, blues and other musical influences will fill the streets, laneways and green spaces. Another new feature is the first crossover stage with jazz and blues being played in King George V Gardens. Also for the first time, there is an app to help you plan your festival experience. You can view the program, buy tickets and stay connected with social media. As always, the Festival plays an important role in fostering the next generation of jazz and blues musicians. Designed to provide encouragement and exposure to young musicians, Australia’s most prestigious jazz competition, the National Jazz Awards, has been a highlight each year since the festival began in 1990. The Festival brings thousands of visitors to Wangaratta and our region and I hope that you all enjoy the very best of North East Victoria during your time here.

WANGARATTA FESTIVAL JAZZ & BLUES 2015
TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR GIG
“My job is to fill the program with firstrate bands that music fans will look forward to catching in action. The two most important considerations are: Don’t go over budget and make sure you don’t schedule anyone to be in two places at once!”
By Adrian Jackson Artistic Director
You might check the schedule and find yourself making hard choices ‘Do I catch a little of this band, then a little of that one? Or just choose one concert, and enjoy it in full?’ Don’t worry, I often find myself wishing I could be in two places at once when the Festival is in full swing. To assist you in planning your weekend, please download our free Festival App. You can set your own schedule up and it will send you alerts 15 minutes before each performance you’ve selected to see.
> For those new to jazz
> For the jazz aficionados
Make sure to catch one of James Morrison’s shows on Sunday. He’s a freakish talent, whether playing trumpet, trombone, piano, you name it; he’s also a natural entertainer, who knows how to draw an audience in, to share the fun that he obviously has whenever he’s on stage.
> For the blues lover
Newcomers will often complain that ‘jazz is boring’, or ‘it’s too hard to understand’. I promise you won’t feel lost during the set by Finn-Land. That’s when Emma Pask and Darren Percival will put their own spin on some of the classic songs of Tim Finn and Neil Finn.
> For the traditional jazz lovers
You’re a fan of traditional jazz? No doubt you’ll enjoy veterans Geoff Bull and Peter Gaudion, and the younger players in The Lagerphones. But don’t be afraid to stay at the Pinsent for bands like The Swingin’ Blades or Paul Williamson’s Hammond Combo. They’re not trad bands, but I’d be surprised if you couldn’t enjoy what they play, and the way they go about it.
P | 8
The gigs at the top of your list will include Lloyd Swanton’s ‘Ambon’; Dave Douglas’ gigs in all 3 formats; the Cuban grooves of Maqueque; and Zac Hurren’s premiere concert performance of the late David Ades’ music, ‘A Life In A Day’.
You just might hear some music you can enjoy in some of the other venues, but if blues is your thing, there is no need to stray far from the Blues Marquee. You can hear it all, legends like Canned Heat, the not-yetruined-by-commercial-success Old Gray Mule, Aussie icons Russell Morris and Joe Camilleri, younger artists like Ash Grunwald, Alex Hahn……let the good times roll!

DAVE DOUGLAS & MONASH ART ENSEMBLE > 8.00pm Friday 30 October - WPAC Theatre In 2014, Dave Douglas came to Australia, to perform at the Adelaide Festival with John Zorn. This created the opportunity for Dave to spend time in Melbourne, to rehearse, perform and record his extended suite ‘Fabliaux’. He describes this music as “music for 16 musicians, in four groups of four, based on 14th century ars nova musical thinking.” Joining Dave for the official launch of this recording is the Monash Art Ensemble, a 15-piece ensemble based at the Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music at Monash University, under the direction of Paul Grabowsky. * Dave Douglas’ performances at Wangaratta Jazz have been made possible by the support of the Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music at Monash University.

As trumpeter, composer and bandleader, Dave Douglas is among the most creative and interesting bandleaders on the US jazz scene. His remarkable contributions to jazz have been acknowledged with a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award and two Grammy nominations, along with numerous Artist of the Year, Trumpeter of the Year and Album of the Year awards in the various jazz critics’ and fans’ annual awards. His stellar Quintet features Jon Irabagon (tenor sax), Matt Mitchell (piano), Linda Oh (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums).
In addition to his prolific output as a composer and bandleader, US trumpeter Dave Douglas relishes the opportunity to get together with like-minded musicians, to exchange ideas in a spirit of inquisitive, spontaneous conversation. Among the musicians he has collaborated with for concert or recording projects are saxophone legend Lee Konitz, trumpeters Enrico Rava and Avishai Cohen, and pianists Martial Solal and Misha Mengelberg. Dave got to know Paul Grabowsky when they were working together for the ‘Fabiaux’ project last year. He was very enthusiastic about the possibility of playing a duo concert at Wangaratta Jazz this year. Paul is one of Australia’s leading jazz pianists, composers and improvisers. Like Dave, he always has a number of new compositions and projects in the works, but is always keen to make the most of an opportunity such as this. P | 9

GEOFF KLUKE & THE CHANGES
GIAN SLATER AND LINDA OH
> 8.00 - 9.00pm > 3.30pm Saturday 31 October Sunday 1 November - WPAC Hall - Holy Trinity Cathedral One of the elder statesmen of the bass in Australian jazz, Geoff Kluke began his career in Adelaide in the late ‘60s. A move to Melbourne in the early ’80s saw his CV expand to include work with the who’s who of Australian jazz and a host of international stars gave him a wider range of opportunities as both a player and teacher. In recent years, Geoff has recorded some of his original compositions, on Valley Road and Like It Is. Both CDs feature some of Geoff’s contemporaries on the Melbourne scene, and some of his favourite younger-generation players. For this concert,Geoff will be joined by Bob Sedergreen (piano), Peter Petrucci (guitar), Mike Jordan (drums), and Wilbur Wilde and Paul Williamson (saxophones).
This year’s Festival presents an opportunity for vocalist Gian Slater and bassist Linda Oh to revisit their collaboration at the 2011 festival. Linda’s career has been on the upward trend since she moved from Perth to New York in 2008. Known for her purity of tone and accuracy of pitch, Gian is also regarded as a commanding improviser. You can be sure that Linda and Gian will inspire each other to produce something special.

He will be joined at Wangaratta by Ben Waples (bass) and James Waples (drums), and special guest Phil Slater (trumpet).
An internationally-renowned master of the oud (fretless Arabic lute), Joseph Tawadros has done a great deal to raise the oud’s profile in mainstream western culture, especially here in Australia. He has performed with a wide range of prominent artists, from Zakir Hussain, Slava Grigoryan and the Australian Chamber Orchestra to Mike Stern, Christian McBride and Jack DeJohnette. At Wangaratta this year, Joseph and his brother James (a brilliant percussionist, using the req hand-drum) will be joined by Sydney pianist Matt McMahon (winner of the National Jazz Awards in 199) and bassist Karl Dunnicliff.
Bassist-composer Linda Oh began her career in Perth, but has been based in New York since 2008. She performed at Wangaratta Jazz in 2009 with her Trio, and again in 2011 with her Quartet. By then, she had already been hailed by Down Beat as one of the young artists to watch in jazz today. Linda returns to Wangaratta this year as a member of the Dave Douglas Quintet, which is a fair measure of how her reputation has risen in the last few years. She will perform music from her Sun Pictures album, with Jon Irabagon (saxophone), James Muller (guitar) and Rudy Royston (drums).

Pianist-composer Mike Nock is acknowledged as one of the greats of Australian jazz. Bass master David Friesen is one of the many musicians Mike developed a rapport with back when he was living in the USA.
Formed by pianist Sam Keevers back in 1995, the Cabrones have played numerous festival gigs around Australia (as well as China and New Caledonia), and held a popular Sunday residency at the Night Cat in Fitzroy for many years. They play a lot of original material, alongside latin jazz classics by the likes of Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri and Poncho Sanchez.
Joining Mark in the rhythm section are the brilliant Steve Grant (piano) and National Treasure, Lynn Wallis (drums). The frontline comprises two of Sydney’s very best : Dan Barnett (trombone, vocals) and Paul Furniss (clarinet, alto / soprano saxophone).
Both Mike and David see this concert as an opportunity to share a musical conversation with the audience, confident that any surprises will be pleasant ones.

The ensemble facilitates the development of students’ skills in improvisation, sight-reading, jazz styles and ensemble performance.
Leading pianist/composer Paul Grabowky has worked with such outstanding singers as Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Shelley Scown, Megan Washington and Kate Ceberano. Add to that list Virna Sanzone, an outstanding singer who has led her own bands, and also worked with as Jackie Orsczaczky and Steve Hunter. In The Italian Project, Paul and Virna are joined by Mirko Guerrini (saxophone) and Niko Schauble (drums). They offer fascinating interpretations of traditional Italian and Sicilian folk songs, and more recent songs from Fellini and other modern Italian composers.

Melbourne saxophonist Paul Van Ross travelled to Cuba in 2013 to record his fourth album, Mi Alma Cubana – My Cuban Soul. Paul will be joined by Melbourne Latin jazz group Clave Mania in order to recreate the Cuban experience, playing Paul’s compositions that combine the deep-rooted traditions of Latin America and a contemporary approach to Latin jazz. Their explorations of Salsa, Cha Cha Cha and Son grooves will get anybody moving.
Over the last 25 years, Paul Williamson (saxophone, vocals) Tim Neal (Hammond organ) and Mike Jordan (drums, vocals) have developed a hand-in-glove rapport that makes them one of the treasures of the Melbourne jazz scene. If anyone says they can’t enjoy jazz, let’s see them resist the sound of a saxophone wailing over the full-bodied throb of a Hammond B-3 organ, pushed along by a driving beat from the drums. This is music that grooves all night long, whatever the tempo, and compels the players to produce earthy, passionate solos. For their Hammond Jazz Party set, they will be joined by special guests Bob Sedergreen (piano), James Greening (trombone) and James Southwell (guitar, vocals).

Going back to his early days with Frank Traynor’s Jazz Preachers, then with the long-running band The Syncopators, and his own band the Blues Express, Peter has always been known for the fire and power of his trumpet playing, as well as his relaxed singing and irreverent sense of humor. Among the international artists he has performed with are Ralph Sutton, Jimmy Witherspoon and Kenny Ball.

For his Trio set at Wangaratta Jazz, Phil will perform originals and standards, with James Muller (guitar) and Tim Firth (drums).
Melbourne saxophonist Robert Burke has enjoyed a wide-ranging career as a performer, composer and educator in music. Each member of the band has gone on to fulfil their potential, performing at a high level in various bands in Perth, interstate or internationally. This reunion will be eagerly anticipated by the band members, and their audience.

The Art And Beauty Of Deep Listening is a very special collaboration between well-known Melbourne jazz musicians, pianist-composer Steve Sedergreen and drummer Mike Jordan, with Ron Murray (didjeridoo/storyteller). The three have been developing this project since 2008, creating a folio of small-ensemble compositions grounded in a process described as ‘deep listening’. This is an Aboriginal concept that describes a deep contemplative process of listening to one another in reciprocal relationships. In the context of musical creation, it allows the musician to respond to his or her immediate environment and other artistic input without distraction.
The Lagerphones are yet another of the excellent youngergeneration trad bands to emerge on the Melbourne scene in recent years. From a furious stomp to a sweet, lowdown blues, the Lagerphones bring fire for the dance floor types, gentle sways for the wallflowers and ocker chants for the truly rowdy. The Lagerphones are James Macaulay (trombone, vocals), Ben Harrison (trumpet), Jon Hunt (clarinet), Louis King (banjo), Marty Holoubek (bass) and Nick Martyn (drums).
The ‘Swinging Blades’ is the resident band on Sunday afternoons at Marrickville Golf Club in Sydney. The original lineup teamed vocalist Jane Irving with Aaron Flower (winner of the 2007 National Jazz Awards) on guitar, Kim Lawson on tenor saxophone, bassist Zoe Hauptmann and drummer Evan Mannell. Since Jane moved to New York a couple of years back, Virna Sanzone has been a frequent guest singer. Expect to hear a program of jazz standards, performed with flair and skill, and above all, obvious pleasure in performing classic songs in the company of such close musical mates.

TNT
WAYFINDERS
WILL MARTINA TRIO
> 1.30pm > 12.30pm > 4.00 - 5.00pm > 12.30 - 1.30pm Sunday 1 November Sunday 1 November Saturday 31 October Saturday 31 October - Hume Bank - WPAC Hall - Holy Trinity - WPAC Hall Gardens Stage Cathedral It will surprise some jazz fans and some rock fans to see Thirsty Merc advertised to play at Wangaratta Jazz. But there is a logical explanation. The members of Thirsty Merc - Rai Thistlethwayte (vocals, piano, guitar), Phil Stack (bass) and Matt Smith (guitar) - are all accomplished jazz players. The band has released an Acoustic Anniversary Album to celebrate their 10-year milestone. It features acoustic interpretations of fan favourites including ‘20 Good Reasons’, ‘In The Summertime’, ‘Someday Someday’, and ‘Mousetrap Heart’. In concert, these arrangements will give Rai, Phil and Matt the chance to stretch out, improvise, and show off their jazz chops.
TNT? That’s Tony, Nick and Ted. Two of the elder statesmen of Australian jazz pianist Tony Gould and drummer Ted Vining, combine with a younger statesman, bassist Nick Haywood, to share the joys of swinging jazz in a piano-trio format. Tony and Ted first played together in the Brian Brown Quartet, back in the mid 1960s, and have since played together occasionally, in various formats. Likewise, Nick has played with both Tony and Ted here and there, but this is his first chance to partner them in a band — thanks to the fact that Ted is now ‘retired’ in Hobart, where Nick is head of the university’s jazz course.
Wayfinders is a new band, combining the improvising skills of Jon Hunt (clarinet), Mark Shepherd (bass) and Ronny Ferella (drums). Their aim is to navigate a path between ancient musical traditions and contemporary improvising practice. As Ronny says, “It’s a personal exploration of sound, mood and shape, influenced by all the music we know of, created in the moment. “The original inspiration, he adds, came from a desire to integrate traditional drumming/vocal music from Cuba into a purely improvising musical environment.”
Cellist Will Martina grew up in Canberra, and intended to study classical music in London, until he caught the improvisation bug while studying at the VCA in Melbourne. An important early association for him was as a vital component of the first Christopher Hale Ensemble. Will returned to Australia last year, and has been pursuing a range of projects. Among them is music for a jazz trio, this version will combine Will’s elegant, often earthy, cello with Jackson Harrison’s fluent piano, and the texture/space-sensitive drumming of Danny Fischer.

Influenced by the blues, folk and country sounds, Luke’s songwriting is sometimes edgy, sometimes humorous yet always topical. Joining him in the Recycled String Band are Chris Mangan, Bruce Gregory, Bryan Rollie Dwyer and Jack Jensen.
Originally from Sydney, guitarist and singer Matt Dwyer earned his reputation as a first-rate blues guitarist for his work with Beachhead Blues, The Bondi Cigars, The Louisville Sluggers and his own Matt Dwyer Quartet. His current band, The Magnatones, is a lively, swinging blues combo featuring Matt’s guitar and vocals, backed by Peter Mavric (double bass) and Steve Morrison (drums).
Russell Morris is one of the icons of popular music in Australia, forever associated with his 1969 smash hit, ‘The Real Thing’. His career took a remarkable turn in 2012-13, when the lack of interest from record labels and commercial radio saw Russell decide he might as well just write and play music that he wanted to play, without any concern for its commercial potential. So he indulged his love of blues, and wrote a bunch of songs around Australian characters of the ‘20s and ‘30s like Squizzy Taylor, Les Darcy and Phar Lap.
Having been recommended via the MBAS ‘Blues Unearthed’ program, Safari Motel presents a contemporary spin on the blues, incorporating elements of funk and soul, even a dash of hip hop. The band’s vocalist, Nicole Nehemia, is a commanding presence on stage. Her performance is supported and enhanced by the professionalism of Dean James (guitar), Nick Pearce (saxophone, keyboards), Jason Nehill (bass) and Neil Richardson (drums)
That album, Sharkmouth. proved to be a surprise hit, giving Russell his first Gold Record in decades. His follow-up, Van Diemen’s Land, enjoyed similar sales success and critical acclaim. And Russell has become a headliner at major blues festivals around Australia. Yes, he’s the real thing! Russell Morris (vocals, guitar) will be joined by John Creech (guitar), Mitch Cairns (bass) and Peter Robinson (drums).

They will perform with Tim Firth (winner of the National Jazz Awards in 2012) on drums, plus one or both of guitarist Carl Morgan (winner of the 2014 Awards) and pianist Steve Barry (runner-up in the 2013 Awards). After the ten finalists perform in the semi-finals, three will be chosen to perform in the final round on Sunday afternoon. This will be broadcast live to air, nationally, on ‘Jazztrack with Mal Stanley’, on ABC Jazz. The winner will receive $12,000, plus an ABC studio recording session. The runner-up will receive $6,000 and a recording session at Pughouse Studios in Melbourne, while the third prize is $3,000. The judging panel will comprise Mike Nock, Geoff Kluke and Phil Stack. EXPLORE OUR REGION
> Though the music might keep you close to town over the four days of the Festival, try to leave an extra day or two to explore our beautiful region. Whether you’re a foodie, a bike rider, an adventure-seeker, or someone who just loves stunning scenery and bushwalks, head out of town to cap off your weekend.
1/ Take a relaxed bike ride ON THE MURRAY TO MOUNTAINS RAIL TRAIL
THINGS TO DO OVER JAZZ WEEKEND…
3/ Feast on regional gourmet food AT MILAWA GOURMET REGION
Jump on the bike for a meandering journey through the beautiful Ovens River Valley between Wangaratta and Beechworth, on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. Pedal between small village producers, filling your basket with gourmet cheeses, wine and olives along the way. (Note: If you’ve booked ahead, enjoy the Beechworth to Wangaratta and All That Jazz bike tour, along the same route.) For maps and information, check out www.murraytomountains.com.au
Fresh cheeses, meat, fish and olives are plentiful, particularly in Milawa, the regional breadbasket. Fill your basket at Milawa Mustards, the Olive Shop and Milawa Bakery, before cruising down to Milawa Cheese Company for a relaxing gourmet lunch. While you are there, drop into The Muse Gallery of Milawa. Check out www.milawagourmet.com.au or www.musegallery.com.au for further information.
2/Indulge in a little wine tasting
4/ Go for a scenic drive
ON PROSECCO ROAD
Providing spectacular vistas of the Upper King Valley and the Alpine National Park, Power’s Lookout was once used by bushranger Harry Power to view approaching troopers. Access is via the Whitfield to Mansfield Road 18 kilometres from Whitfield.
Since 2000, when Otto Dal Zotto planted the first Prosecco vines in the King Valley, five other local winemakers have begun producing the sparkling Italian wine. Together they have created Prosecco Road, a sensational food and wine trail celebrating the best of the rustic Italian dining experience. Jump on to www.winesofthekindvalley.com.au to join the trail…
For more information about our beautiful region visit http://www. victoriashighcountry. com.au/

OUR FESTIVAL
> Volunteers
The Festival Board and Management extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to our valued army of volunteers. Headed up by The Centre, the organisation and management of the volunteers is undoubtedly integral to the entire operation, let’s be honest, without our volunteers the Festival simply wouldn’t happen. Volunteers range from our dedicated Board Members who contribute countless hours right throughout the year, to those volunteers who gather over the Festival weekend to lend a helping hand. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our Festival and we thank you all very sincerely. Thank you also to Hume Bank and Brown Brothers who have sponsored the volunteer program for 2015. Your support is vital to the ongoing success of the Festival.
A world-class music experience in Wangaratta that inspires audiences, develops artists, invigorates the community and shapes the national jazz and blues scene.
> Artistic principles
We aim to present a program where Australian and international jazz and blues artists, who maintain the highest standards of their art form, can engage and inspire each other and our audience through the international language of music. As well as celebrating the tradition of jazz and blues, we showcase those artists who are keeping improvised music fresh and vibrant by playing creative, contemporary repertoire that challenges and excites.

WANGARATTA FESTIVAL JAZZ & BLUES 2015
REMINDERS TO THE AUDIENCE > Queues & VIP seating
Patrons who have a Gold Pass for concerts in the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre (WPAC) Theatre do not need to queue to ensure entry to the venue. They should join the Gold Pass holders’ line 15-20 minutes prior to the advertised starting time, to ensure that everyone is seated in time for the concert. Please note, other patrons may be able to use any seats that have not been occupied by the time the concert has commenced. Those patrons who do not have a Gold Pass may need to queue early if they want to maximise their chance of accessing these venues for a specific performance. Gold Pass holders will also have priority entry (via a separate queue) for concerts at the WPAC Hall, and the Kawai Stage at St Patrick’s Hall. At all venues, patrons are asked to form an orderly queue, and to assist our volunteer door staff with managing entry to the venue. Any feedback regarding ticketing options and the management of queues is welcome after the Festival via www.wangarattajazz.com
> Venue entry/exit
In the concert venues (WPAC, St Patrick’s Hall – Kawai Stage and Holy Trinity Cathedral), patrons are asked to consider that some people prefer to listen to a concert performance in its entirety, while others might prefer to hear just part of the concert. Patrons wanting to enter or leave during the performance are asked to wait until a suitable break between performances, and to keep noise to a minimum. In the case of the National Jazz Awards, to avoid distractions to the finalists, the doors will remain closed until the conclusion of each finalist’s set of three pieces.
> To ensure that everyone enjoys the Festival, we ask you to please take note of the following:
> Sound checks
In the concert venues, most performers require that the hall be cleared while the stage is cleared and re-set, the piano is re-tuned and a sound check is conducted. Organisers will make every effort to have the doors open 15 minutes before the advertised starting time. Should there be any delay, patrons’ patience is appreciated. Thorough sound checks and piano re-tunings are necessary to ensure that the audience hears the music the way the performers want them to hear it.
> Recording
No audio or video recordings may be made, except with the express permission of the performers.
> Photographs
Please refrain from taking photographs inside concert venues (WPAC Theatre and Hall, St Patrick’s Hall – Kawai Stage and Holy Trinity Cathedral). In other venues, photographers are welcome, except in those rare cases when performers specifically request that photos not be taken.
> Photographers should
• avoid excessive use of flash, as this can distract performers and audiences • avoid using audible shutters or wind-ons during quiet passages in the music • avoid blocking other patrons’ line of sight
> Shhhhhhhh!
Patrons should refrain from talking during performances in the concert venues. At other venues, a more relaxed atmosphere is appropriate…. so long as you don’t make it hard for others to hear the music. In all venues mobile phones, pagers and watch alarms should be turned OFF.
> Seating
Patrons can help ensure that the full seating capacity is used in concert venues, by moving to the centre of the row.
> Food & drink
These are not permitted inside concert venues. Patrons are encouraged to book for lunch or dinner at the Pinsent Hotel, to ensure a reserved seat.
> Dancing
Outside the concert venues, if the music makes you want to dance, go for it! At the GOTAFE CSU Blues Marquee and the Hume Bank Gardens Stage, a special dance area is set aside in front of the stage. Wherever you want to dance, just try to avoid blocking the view of those who prefer to sit and listen.
> Door staff
The door staff at all venues are volunteers, making a contribution to their community’s biggest event. Your cooperation with them as they check tickets and control entry to venues is appreciated.

WANGARATTA FESTIVAL JAZZ & BLUES 2015
ENGAGING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
> The Festival plays an important role in our vibrant local community – helping to develop the artistic and cultural scene, contributing to the local economy and giving music lovers and musicians an opportunity to participate in an internationally renowned event.
> Community Cushion Drive
Join in our community cushion drive by donating old Festival t-shirts and new cushion inserts. These will recycled into preloved cushions that will be available for patrons to use at the Hume Bank Gardens venue over the Festival weekend. Items can be dropped off to Nolan Media & Events (Shop 2/21 Reid Street, Wangaratta). Or if you’re feeling creative, by all means make them yourself and drop the finished product into us.
P | 50
> Tribute piano
Did you have an inspiring music teacher? As part of an art installation themed “If they could hear you now…play a tribute to your music teacher”, a donated piano has been tethered to the pedestrian bridge over the Ovens River and adjacent to the GOTAFE CSU Blues Marquee. Join us in honouring all the great music teachers out there by writing your teacher’s name on the nearby blackboard!
> Jazz up your shop
Once again local businesses are vying for exciting prizes as they ‘Jazz Up The Town’ as part of a competition supported by local radio stations 3NE and Edge FM. So, as you head from venue to venue, don’t forget to peek into the shop windows for a little extra jazz in your day!
> Kids’ zone
One for the kiddies! The Sunday Jazz Market will have a dedicated ‘Kids’ Zone’ featuring face painting, coloured hair spray, loom bands, crafting, physical activities plus coffee for parents and carers. Thanks to Wangaratta High School’s Community Learning Centre (CLC) for organising this fun activity.
> Buskers
The 2015 Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival Busking Circuit will see a mass production of street performers including musicians, dancers and magicians to name just a few, performing all around the Wangaratta town centre. Information on the busking locations and performers will be accessible on the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival App and with a variety of performing styles and genres, acts will be tailored towards entertaining families and bringing fun and festivity to the streets of Wangaratta.
> Make a diddley bow and a world record
Musical instruments don’t have to be expensive or well crafted to sound good and you don’t have to be a blues legend to create your own blues music. For many young musicians, it all starts with simply having a go! With more than 300 students representing 11 schools, coming together to play instruments they’ve made themselves, our world record attempt at the most people playing the didley bow was a truly memorable moment. Check out our website for more details www.wangarattajazz.com.
