Intimate and relaxed summer wedding THE wedding of Wangaratta women Belinda Harrison and Renee Raknes marked the 20th anniversary of a relationship that blossomed back in the late 1990s. The intimate wedding - which had 33 guests - was held entirely at the Malt Shed in Wangaratta, the ceremony in their backyard area, and the reception in the marquee. "We wanted the vibe of the day to be really relaxed and fun and for our guests to come together and celebrate with us as we made LW DOO RIͤ FLDO %HOLQGD VDLG "But mainly, it was just to have all the people who are important to us in the one place and for them to actually meet each other because most of them don't know each other personally, although they may have heard of each other over the years." Belinda said most aspects of the day were looked after by Kirsty and Jen from The Malt Shed, while the cake on the day was provided by The Elements Catering and Cakes, and the bridal party held flowers from The Dutch Connection, and the wedding celebrant was Roxanne Bodsworth from Sunwyse Writing and Celebrancy Services. Despite the oppressive heat of the day even in the later afternoon, the temperature hovered at 39 degrees - Belinda said that she and Renee were very happy with how the day went. "Our daughter's speech (which we hadn't seen prior to the ceremony) was so funny and heartfelt, as all the speeches (and the vows) were," Belinda said. "It was better than we had imagined it would be, and we think it was because of the amazing friends and family we have who came and celebrated with us." The wedding was followed by a honeymoon touring through Europe.

Wedding Food Ideas

Every bride wants their reception to be unique and memorable, but coming up with original wedding food ideas can be tricky. Don’t forget that wedding reception food doesn’t have to follow the usual format of a sit down dinner, and your guests might have more fun if you do something unusual. Here are five wedding food ideas for a truly unique reception:

Festival style

Food

A wedding

Festival style weddings are big news this year, with outdoor live music and camping facilities on site. Festival style catering is a big part of this trend so if you are having an outdoor summer wedding consider hiring a variety of catering vans to serve steak sandwiches, falafels, gourmet burgers, and baked potatoes. If there is a particular local delicacy in the area you are getting married, see if you can hire a catering van serving that. An ice cream van is a perfect addition for guests with a sweet tooth.

Food stations have been a popular choice for wedding reception food for some time, but food station trends are ever evolving. Three emerging trends are hummus bars, featuring a section of delicious dips, canapT bars, where a chef makes canapes to order whilst entertaining your guests at the same time, and Japanese style Tepanyaki bars, where guests choose their raw ingredients and then watch them being cooked.

Wedding reception food doesn’t necessarily have to be dinner. If you have an early morning ceremony or want to break with tradition and hold your reception before you say ‘I do’ you could serve brunch instead. Brunch is a fun informal meal, associated with family and celebration. It is also cheaper than serving dinner as you only need to pay for one course. Make sure you have a variety of hot food including eggs, bacon, French toast and pancakes, and cold delicacies such as croissants, doughnuts and seasonal fresh fruit with yoghurt.

catering

Sociable

food

If you are planning to have a sit down meal for your wedding reception food, try to get the guests at each table interacting by serving food in the centre of the tables. Sweet and savoury fondues work well, as do tapas and a range of Mexican dishes such as fajitas. You can also serve platters of mini appetisers or desserts for guests to help themselves.

stations

brunch

Dessert only

catering

If you have a limited catering budget, but you want to make an impact with your wedding reception food, pick a single course and blow your budget on that. A dessert only meal is a popular choice as most people like dessert of some kind. Create a lavish display featuring different types of cake, mousse and pudding, and try to hire an ice cream bar to complement it. Make sure you include some less sugary options such as a carrot cake and plenty of fruit or a cheese board for those that don’t have such a sweet tooth.

Keeping perspective key to a happy day HIGH expectations, years of planning and pressure (real or imagined) to have a picture perfect wedding day can bring out the worst in any bride or groom – or for that matter, even parents of the bride or groom. But the key to having a great day is as simple as those involved stepping back and having some perspective on the day. Ideally, it should be an occasion to celebrate your love and the friends and family that surround and support you. And while it is your day, there are several things to remember so that you do not stray into bridezilla – or groomzilla – territory. One is to have gratitude to your guests and wedding party members and do not ask them to jump through impossible hoops to be part of your day – whether it is forking out thousands of dollars for a long

ROMANTIC HONEYMOON ACTIVITIES

P O T

10

The wedding bells have rung their song, but what comes next is just as magical. Honeymooners flock to the Cook Islands, seeking the perfect backdrop of picturesque scenery to compliment the romance of such an occasion. Step out onto the beach from your front door and make sure your first memories as husband and wife are magical with these top 10 ideas for romance. 1. Black Pearls

6. Scooter Exploration

The Cook Islands is home to some of the best black pearls in the world. If you’re looking for that perfect honeymoon gift, try purchasing a piece of black pearl jewellery from one of the retailers such as Goldmine or Fishers Black Pearl Jewellery.

One of the best ways to explore Rarotonga’s majestic inland environment is by hiring scooters and going off on your own. Scooters provide a feeling of utter freedom, as you can choose how you go about exploring the 32-kilometrelong ring road around Rarotonga.

2. Takitumu Conservation Area

7. Southern Cross

The Takitumu Conservation Area is a private forest, home to numerous endangered bird species. An utterly serene spot, it’s a great place for you and your partner to escape society and enjoy an intimate walk through the lush environment.

The 17-metre yacht, Southern Cross can take you and your partner out on a private cruise around the island of Rarotonga. You're both able to sit back and relax, while the world moves around you. Alcohol can be brought onboard and the sunset cruise is a must.

3. Rapae Bay Restaurant

8. Scuba Diving

With a 5-star design and picturesque views of Aitutaki Lagoon, the Rapae Bay Restaurant truly delivers a romantic evening of delicious food and intimate surrounds. You can enjoy a private meal on the beach with the water lapping at the shore only metres away.

Learn to dive together in some of the clearest waters in the world. With experienced instructors, you’ll both be credited scuba divers in a matter of days. While under the water, at any given moment you could see marvellous marine life such as giant turtles, reef sharks, manta rays and tropical fish.

4. Shipwreck Hut

9. Mangaia

Relax amongst the homely surrounds of Shipwreck Hut, while the owner serves up delicious cocktails including a specialty called Opu Ra Magic. You can watch the sun go down from the comfortable seats or take a stroll along Arorangi Beach.

The most southern of the Cook Islands’ islands, Mangaia is where you can discover the rustic side of the country. Barely more than 100 guests visit the island each year, so you’re able to feel a sense of separation from the world while staying at a private seaside villa.

5. Islets

10. Polynesian Massage Both Rarotonga and Aitutaki have world-renowned day spas where you can book a couple’s Polynesian Massage. Share the feeling of utter relaxation as your body undergoes expert treatments to remove stress.

Muri Beach Lagoon is not only home to sparkling water and soft sand, but also four islets (motu). You can swim or kayak across to any of the islets, where you and your partner can enjoy a private beach away from everyone else.
