New Year’s Eve wedding has local flavour THE festive feeling of New Year’s Eve and picturesque North East locations combined to make for a magical wedding day for local couple Jackson and Joanna Davis. The pair met at Falls Festival on New Year’s Eve, with Jackson’s eventual proposal happening on Mount Alexander QHDU KLV KRPH RQ 1HZ <HDU̵V 'D\ ͤ YH years later. “We thought we would continue the tradition and get married on New Year’s Eve!” Joanna said. “It was the best way to bring in the new year.” The couple were married at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Wangaratta, where Joanna was baptised. “It was really lovely to go back there and get married, plus it is a beautiful cathedral and our priest Ken was very good,” Joanna said. Joanna’s dress and veil was from Rachael Gilbert’s bridal collection, while Jack had his green suit made for him in Hong Kong, and Joanna had her makeup done by makeup artist Coby Field. The reception took place later that day at Gapsted Wines, near Myrtleford, which
Joanna described as being a great location with amazing scenery. “We wanted to have our wedding stress free, so somewhere that was the complete package. “Gapsted were fantastic! ̸$OO RXU IULHQGV KDG D PDJLFDO QLJKW ͤ OOHG with beautiful scenery, yummy food and delicious wine.” The pair broke with tradition when it came to the cake, opting for a donut tower made by Little Red Robyn cake design, and had a photo booth through Groovy Grins. Joanna also had flowers from Floral Harvest in Yarrawonga. The wedding photography was done by Jerome Cole, and Joanna said “he was one of the reasons we loved our day so much.” She said the wedding was “the best day of our lives. “We spent the whole day with a smile on our faces, having fun with friends and family.” YOUNG LOVE: Joanna and Jackson Davis on their wedding day. Infuse your wedding with individual flavour WHILE there is plenty of room for tradition in wedding planning, more and more people are adding their own quirky or personal details to their day to express their personalities and make their weddings stand out. One way this can be done is putting their own spin on the classic floral arrangements or bouquets. While traditional floral arrangments are as beautiful and popular as ever, some brides choose to carry handmade options, from paper roses to pinwheels or flowers made of meaningful sheet music, buttons or fabric, or opt for unusual plant choices such as succulents or herbs such as lavender. Some creative brides and grooms have even had various types of food as their bouquet – although these choices should be carefully considered so you don’t attract stinging insects or make a mess of your dress or suit. A theme can also make for a sense of fun and whimsy, whether it’s a carnivallike atmosphere with plenty of activities to keep kids of all ages happy, or adding elements inspired by your favourite movie, TV show or book. Switching up the roles of the bridal party can also be great if it better reflects the relationships in your life, from recruiting a “man of honourâ€? or “best womanâ€? to having a flower grandma or grandpa instead of the traditional flower girl or page boy. Bridal Q&A with Meghan Gehrig Tell us more about John Gehrig Wines. If you love a winery with history, then John Gehrig Wines is for you. ,WĚľV D ͤ IWK JHQHUDWLRQ IDPLO\ UXQ ZLQHU\ (with generation six assisting where they can!) a vineyard and winery was established in 1976 on the banks of the King River at Oxley only minutes from the Milawa Gourmet Region. In 2011, the allure of returning back into John’s original birthplace – Rutherglen- was too strong, thus Ross with wife Meghan, have expanded to a new vineyard and cellar door site in Gooramadda (east Rutherglen) . Why does it make such an ideal destination wedding venue? The beautiful setting of 250acres of vineyard gives you some stunning locations for your wedding ceremony and photos . The reception can take place in our charming heritage listed cellar door; which the interior GHVLJQ FDQ EH WDLORUHG WR VXLW \RXU VSHFLͤ F wedding plans: from the traditional tables, to long lunch style or cocktail our venue at Rutherglen is a rustic blank canvas , or at Oxley you can have a tranquil lawn ceremony by the King River and a relaxed reception on the deck overlooking the river. Why do you think couples should marry in this beautiful area of North East Victoria? Diversity and unique locations, beautiful surroundings, passionate experienced venues/vendors, great weather! And of course an amazing food and wine culture. Often couples are overwhelmed with the great variety of vendors to choose from for their wedding day. How can you help the couple? We can sit down and discuss their vision and ideas and I can reach out to my vendor network, if I can’t help directly I’m sure one of my network friends can point us in the right direction. How do you make a wedding at your vineyard as amazing as possible for a couple? I guess it’s all in the planning stage - ensuring the dream can be a reality and is

within reach, keeping the communication channels open and allowing the couple access to the vineyard site to walk through and plan their dream wedding. Working with strong, creative, passionate vendors certainly assist in making it amazing. What advice would you give couples planning a destination wedding in this region? Look for a venue operator who understands what you want and can deliver your vision, it’s your day! As you need to be comfortable and relaxed not having more added
stress in the process of planning your day. Do you have any favourite moments from weddings you’ve hosted? I always enjoy seeing the joy in the couple after the ceremony and getting positive feedback from the event we have hosted for their special day. What sets your venue apart from the others? It is family run and operated and you will be communicating to the person who will be in charge of set up, pouring your drinks at the bar
and everything runs smoothly as the event affects our family business and reputation . Also, we don’t have a restaurant on site, so the catering menu/style can be what or who you like! What three words would you use to describe John Gehrig Wines? Accommodating, adaptable and genuine. In February 2019, Rutherglen will be on show for the Love & Light Wedding ready festival – check it out on all social media channels.

How Much Do You Actually Need?

Here is a basic breakdown of what you can expect to pay: 48%-50% CEREMONY: 2%-3% ATTIRE: 8%-10% FLOWERS: 8%-10% STATIONERY: 2%-3% WEDDING RINGS: 2%-3% GIFTS: 2%-3% ENTERTAINMENT/MUSIC: 8%-10% PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY: 10%-12% PARKING/TRANSPORTATION: 2%-3% MISCELLANEOUS: 8% RECEPTION:

for a “just-in-case” fund. > If you’re paying for your honeymoon yourselves, remember to budget for that as well.
How Much Can You Save?
As soon as you’re engaged, start putting aside as much of your income as you can for the wedding. Saving 20% of your monthly income is a good - though painful - goal. The longer your engagement, the more you’ll be able to store away. WAYS TO SAVE: Limit your spending on small stuff (renting movies instead of going out; indulging in a coffee once instead of twice a day; downloading just the song you love instead of buying the whole CD). These changes will hardly affect your quality of life, but after a year, the extra cash will cover some wedding essentials. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR MONEY: Instead of stashing your money in a lowinterest savings account, consider a term deposit account or buying shares. The interest rate can be double that of a savings account. Just check the fine print to avoid penalties or locking your money away for a fixed term and being unable to access your money in time for your wedding.

YOU and your beloved are looking forward to celebrating at your reception for your first time as a married couple, but there’s only one concern – your respective dance skills. Thankfully, this is a small concern that can easily be addressed with a call to Anthony Pepers from Enjoy Dance. Mr Pepers, who has many years of experience in dance and dance instruction, has worked with dancers of all abilities and prides himself on being able to help couples make a lasting impression while feeling comfortable and having fun on the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife. Anthony can provide private lessons for prospective brides and grooms, or help whole wedding parties get into step with group private tuition or scheduled classes. Mr Pepers said he is happy to work with couples on every aspect, from simply
improving their ballroom dancing abilities, to choreographing and teaching the more elaborate first dance routines that have come into vogue in the past few years. Anthony added that he also takes into account the size limitations and layout of the dance floor/venue to ensure that couples are able to showcase their routine to the best of their ability on their wedding day, and is happy to suggest wedding songs himself or work with something that the bride and groom have provided. “I want to create the perfect dance on the perfect day,” he said. Trends for 2019 already taking shape
GREENERY in wedding centrepieces is becoming increasingly popular.
WITH 2019 fast approaching, there are plenty of trends making their presence felt in the wedding industry. One of these is personalised gift boxes or bags, which are designed to spoil each guest and can contain items like candles, wine, gourmet snacks and more. These are especially great for guests taking part in destination weddings and can also include practical items such as wedding itineraries/schedules, sunscreen, mints and more. Rustic and DIY style weddings aren’t going anywhere, with stylised greenery in decorations and feathers as a design element also having a moment. Bold colours, including shades of purple and blue, are becoming increasingly popular as decorative themes or even as part of the colours worn by the bride, groom and wedding party. Many brides are branching out from the classic white gown to dresses in any number of shades, from muted pastels to strong colours.
Other brides are taking inspiration from the recent royal wedding and wearing tiaras at their wedding, or wearing dresses inspired by the style of Meghan Markle. Some brides are even embracing pantsuits and jumpsuits to express their personal style. Brides and grooms who want to cut loose at their receptions are embracing WKH LGHD RI VXEWOH RXWͤ W FKDQJHV GXULQJ the day so that they can more comfort-

ably dance, from changing shoes to the EULGH ZHDULQJ D VKRUWHU RU OHVV FRQͤ QLQJ dress. When it comes to wedding photography and videography, drones are becoming increasingly popular as a way to capture a new perspective of your big day. Groomsmen are being encouraged to display more of their personality, from mix and match suits to pops of colours and patterns in their accessories.
While some enjoy sharing their big day with social media, and the popularity of wedding hashtags continues to be popular, many couples are opting for unplugged ceremonies to keep all involved focused on the moment. When it comes to receptions, fun touches such as unusual or statement place cards, DIY food stations and hanging centrepieces are among the items growing in popularity.

Wedding registry trends ACCORDING to recent surveys carried out by wedding website The Knot, couples are embracing a range of trends when creating their wedding registries. Couples look to online to set up and manage their registry Couples set up an average of three wedding registries and create them an average of 7.5 months before the wedding day. As couples look to mobile and online tools to inspire and plan every part of their wedding day, it’s no surprise that a large majority of couples with wedding registries primarily manage them online. When selecting their primary registry, the most important factors couples consider are the ability for their guests to make registry purchases online (94 per cent) and the ability to manage their registries online (93 per cent). Creating wedding registries without limitations When it comes to the priorities of newlywed duos, no one couple is the same; they want to create wedding registries that will help them start their lives together on the right foot, without being limited by choice. As couples select retailers to create wedding registries, they consider the ac-

cessibility of the retailer for themselves and their guests, the variety of products available, as well as the range of prices for the items they’ve added to their registry. Cash registries
Formerly a faux pas, some couples are embracing cash registries. Among those with cash registries, half of couples (49 per cent) used their cash registry contributions to help pay for their
honeymoon, while one in four (27 per cent) used their cash gifts toward a down payment on a home. Wedding websites Wedding websites continue to be the best go-to for guests looking for couples’ registries. The personal wedding website continues to be the most popular way couples share their wedding registries with guests. Other popular ways couples share their wedding registries include bridal shower invitations, word of mouth via friends and family, wedding invitations, save-thedate announcements and social media. Charity registries Some couples are using their wedding registries to give back. When charity registries were available, 15 per cent of guests reported contributing to the charity. Trendy tech popular in registry Many couples register for electronics to make their lives easier. While digital cameras, DVD/Blu-ray players and video game consoles have declined in popularity year over year, smart home devices were the second most popular electronic item to register for in 2017, according to the survey.
