Effective Learning Places Health Check

There will be continued and increased pressure on university’s to achieve real and substantial savings and demonstrate good practice in space management. In response to these challenging conditions PRP has partnered with Mosaic Space to create the Effective Learning Places Health Check. Working in collaboration we identify areas where savings can be made in estates provision without comprising institutional quality or the much coveted student experience. This is achieved through space consolidation and improved operational efficiency, to enable your estate to do more with less.

Stakeholder Consultation

Re-use of Existing Buildings

Consultation is critical to the development of a robust brief and ultimately the success of an education project.

University estates are complex environments. PRP has expert knowledge of working on existing buildings and understanding their worth within the campus environment.

Our familiarity of working with complex user groups and multiple stakeholders has enabled us to build on the experience to develop our own unique consultation process. This valuable, explorative process ensures that our designs reflect a thorough understanding of the context, the people, the education process, the academic vision, funding requirements and strategic programme. An awareness of the continuing changing landscape of the education process allows the designers to build in future proofing. We offer a Process Workshop at the commencement of a project to inform all stakeholders of their responsibility, when their input will be needed and the importance of their active involvement.

We believe existing buildings have significant latent value. Through optioneering we encourage our clients to review all opportunities to improve the quality of existing spaces for maximum space efficiency. The greatest challenge to working in a live environment is Health and Safety. Key to reducing the risks is to understand the dynamics of the operational activities in and around the site. This is achieved through rigorous stakeholder consultation identifying potential conflicts and constraints of the contract upon the occupants and vice versa. Continuous dialogue throughout the project development stages is essential to maintain ‘good neighbour’ relationships. Construction phasing during the concept design can help mitigate costly intermittent construction resulting in potential multiple contracts and alleviate adverse relationships with occupiers during the contract period.

Services Architecture

Our design approach is based on a thorough understanding of what people need in their built environment; how people use and enjoy buildings; how we create spaces and places that will stand the test of time, whilst also striving for best value for our clients Jeff Brooks, Design Director

Our aim with each new project is to bring together our collective depth of experience and knowledge of building typologies with a fresh and innovative response to each specific site and environment. Jeff Brooks, Design Director provides creative leadership across the practice, engaging with all groups through interactive design workshops and reviews to ensure the highest quality and creativity at all stages of the design process.

We bring an innovative and challenging approach to achieve high quality in design, to optimise environmental performance and to employ modern construction methods. We pay close attention to the design process from concept through to construction, and believe that the quality of design is to be found in the detail.

Interiors

Planning

PRP’s Interiors division is a dedicated team of designers embedded within the company who have a wealth of knowledge and understanding of designing for people within the Higher Educational sector.

PRP's planning team has the experience and expertise to assist education providers maximise their assets. This is achieved by obtaining suitable planning permissions from small-scale extensions through to delivering permissions for large-scale redevelopments.

Combining the interior and the architectural departments at PRP we can provide a holistic approach to all aspects of the design. Our designs push the boundaries to provide the most inspiring, practical places to live, learn, work and play in.

PRP Planning has worked with a number of education bodies. We therefore understand the factors that influence a development strategy, the delivery of a project and how to best engage with the right stakeholders, at the right time. We can also add value by influencing planning policy to reflect an education provider’s future requirements and by incorporating a masterplan or development brief into local planning policy.

We focus on providing high quality solutions where our expertise in brand development, space planning, lighting, material selection and attention to detail in integrating IT, furniture, fittings and equipment is the key.

Constant interaction with PRP architects, sustainability and landscape experts allows us to fully understand the intricacies and complexities of any site. The integration of these services enables us to make a positive contribution towards a deliverable, desirable and cost effective solution.

Student Accommodation

PRP Landscape is managed as a distinctive group providing design consultancy to a broad client base and in a wide range of sectors. PRP Landscape is recognised as a dynamic and award winning team with a particular focus on sustainability, place making and delivering high quality public realm projects.

Designing suitable housing for students requires a specialist understanding of their needs and financial means. PRP has an impressive portfolio of projects tailored to the specific needs of students during their academic journey.

PRP Landscape services include: Enquiry by design Townscape assessment Cultural mapping Learning through landscapes Sustainable landscape proposals Campus masterplanning Design and implementation of public realm and recreational facilities Cost planning Estate landscape management plans

Our design approach is contextual so that we create developments that are safe and integrated with their surroundings. We work in close partnership with our clients, both universities and third party providers (as appropriate) to ensure that students are provided with attractive and affordable housing within the campus environment or close ‘travel to campus’ distance. These projects often require our knowledge of modern methods of construction and standardisation, together with sustainable design solutions to achieve cost efficient construction and minimal running costs. We are currently undertaking various key retrofit projects across the UK with influential organisations like the Energy Technologies Institute, NHBC Foundation and Zero Carbon Hub. This knowledge would benefit student accommodation refurbishment projects
