How did Powell River get its name? Israel Wood Powell serves as namesake for Powell River and Powell Lake. He was a doctor, businessperson, politician and friend of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. MacDonald. In fact, it was MacDonald who gave Powell the first Canadian flag ever to fly on British Columbian soil. After the province joined Canadian Confederation a month later, Powell was given a role in federal government that would be equivalent to the minister of indigenous and northern affairs today.It was in that capacity he first visited the site that bears his name.

NEIGHBOURHOODS South of town

Powell River’s south-of-town areas are some of the very best for outdoor adventures. Along this stretch of Highway 101, there are numerous beaches and trail access points, both marked and unmarked. On one side of the road, you can enjoy tide pools and ocean vistas at Myrtle Rocks Regional Park; on the other, you can play a round of golf at an 18-hole, Les Furber-designed course. Or, head to nearby Duck Lake Road for access to fantastic multi-use trails, or further south to Palm Beach Regional Park for a picnic on the water. Eagle River is a hidden gem, with its natural waterfall and glorious canyons, while the more visible Lang Creek Salmon Hatchery is an impressive sight during the annual salmon run. Further south, you’ll find access to Powell Forest Canoe Route and Stillwater Bluffs before reaching Saltery Bay, where a nine-foot bronze mermaid thrills divers 20 metres below the surface of the sea.

Paradise Valley

One of Powell River’s best-kept secrets is an agricultural area known as Paradise Valley, which boasts fertile fields and some of the best horseriding trails in town. A farmer’s market is held at Paradise Exhibition Park every Saturday and Sunday from May to September. The site is also home to a miniature railroad, with 800 feet of rideable track, that is sure to be a hit with young visitors. Further along Padgett Road, you will find access to Hamill Lake, a hidden gem with warm waters and woodland views. Just remember to leave with everything you brought in, as there are no garbage receptacles on site.

An arc of former unpowered ferro-cement supply barges, each one has a name and most of the current vessels date back to the mid-1940s. The longest, SS Peralta, was built in 1921 and is the last American-built concrete ship still afloat. The hulks are viewed best from the Townsite viewpoint on Marine Avenue; up a block, beside the Lawn Bowling Club; or from the shores of Second Beach.

The mill Although Powell River’s mill site has changed significantly from its original 1910 footprint, Catalyst Paper Corporation still employs nearly 400 residents. In its heyday, it was the largest pulp and paper facility in existence, employing nearly 3,000 workers and supplying four per cent of the world’s newsprint. More recently, the bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey was printed on Powell River paper. Did you know? Powell River has the first Credit Union in BC. It was chartered by a group of Powell River Company millworkers in 1939 with a deposit of $48.30, just over $800 in today’s currency.

Much of Townsite’s original architecture was built in the Arts and Crafts Bungalow or Tudor Revivalstyle, save for a few noticeable exceptions like the federal building (now Townsite Brewing). “That was the first shift away from the Arts and Crafts movement,” says Nelson. “It was a pivotal year. All of the sudden there was a stampede toward the modern and then the mid-century modern.” At only 500 metres in length, Powell River is the second shortest river in the world. It was first dammed in 1910 and later raised in 1924 to generate more power for the mill. “The best viewpoint of both our past and our future, essentially, is from the middle of the Wildwood Bridge,” says Nelson. “You can see a lot of history standing there.” The mill site and dam are located atop the original settlement of the Tla’amin people, an area known as Tees Kwat, or “Big River.” Prior to the 1870s, this unceded territory was used for habitation and spiritual activities by the indigenous Coast Salish. “This was a permanent base,” said Nelson. “There is evidence that there were easily 4,000 to 5,000 people.”

Wildwood

Wildwood is located just to the north of Powell River’s historic Townsite neighbourhood, connected by a bridge that spans a lakeside area known as the Shinglemill. The facility produced cedar shakes for more than 40 years, beginning in 1913. Today, it is a popular restaurant and marina where many go to watch the boats going by. Up the hill you will find fertile farmland and many popular hiking trails, including those leading to Scout Mountain. Accessible via Sunset Park and conquered in under an hour, this day-hike pays handsomely with panoramic ocean views.

Tla’amin Nation

Past, present and future Coast Salish people have inhabited the Sunshine Coast for thousands of years, fostering a deep connection with the land and its abundant resources. Archeological sites around Powell River, Texada, Ahgykson (formerly Harwood Island) and Okeover paint a cultural picture that we are only beginning to comprehend as time goes on. The current Tla’amin village site, Teeshoshum, located between Wildwood and Lund, is home to more than 1,000 residents, around one-20th of the original population. A treaty agreement that took effect in April 2016 was a major milestone for the now-self-governing Tla’amin Nation, representing a confirmation of land and resource rights and the return of 8,323 hectares of unceded territory. Lund can be found at Mile 0 of Highway 101, which stretches 24,000 kilometres south to Quellón, Chile. Destinations Desolation Sound

Don’t let Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park’s dreary moniker keep you away. In reality, the area is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Located 32 kilometres north of Powell River, the park is comprised of a series of islands, coves and inlets that are sheltered from the elements due to their unique location. These warm, deep waters are revered among swimmers, kayakers and scuba divers, who find much to discover within. The sound is also frequented by yachters, who have been known to sing the praises of Prideaux Haven, Tenedos Bay and Grace Harbour on many occasions. Desolation Sound is BC’s largest marine park, measuring 8,449 hectares in total with over 60 kilometres of shoreline to explore.

Savary Island

Surrounded by warm waters and sandy beaches to rival Hawaii, Savary Island is a unique 13-kilometre slice of paradise. But be warned: the area does take a little extra preparation, due to the mixture of private and public spaces to be found there. Savary is accessible by float plane, boat or water taxi from Lund Harbour. Nearly all property is under private ownership, however, the beaches and access roads are fair game and there are plenty of opportunities to rent a piece of the island for days or even weeks at a time.

Did you know? Savary Island is home to one of the largest arbutus trees in Canada. It measures almost 25 metres tall and nearly six metres in circumference.

Savary Island checklist: A map Savary’s star attractions, Indian Point and South Beach, are not what greet you when you arrive at the wharf. Come prepared with a map so you can find your intended destinations and avoid any accidental trespassing along the way.

Bottled water The island features a pub, restaurant and a natural spring mid-island, but you never know where you will be when thirst hits. Best to play it safe by bringing bottled water; just do not drink too much because public washrooms are scarce. Garbage bags There are no garbage facilities to be found on Savary, so everything

you bring onto the island must come back off with you. Take along a backpack and some garbage bags to contain your waste and help keep this delicate ecosystem in pristine condition. A flashlight All electricity on the island is supplied by generator or solar panel and campfires are strictly prohibited, so be sure to bring a flashlight with you to illuminate the way once the sun goes down.

Destinations Texada Island

Over 300 square kilometres to explore and enjoy! The largest of the Southern Gulf Islands, Texada holds an important place in Tla’amin history for its richness in resources. Spanish explorers gave the area its name in 1791, but the middens and fish weirs on the island’s west side predate their arrival by centuries. Today, Texada is home to more than 1,000 residents, split between Gillies Bay and Van Anda. Visitors may choose to arrive by plane, boat or a 25-minute ferry crossing from Westview Harbour to Blubber Bay. Day-tripping and quarry-dipping No trip to Texada would be complete without a picnic at Shelter Point Campground and a swim at the abandoned limestone quarry known as Heischolt Lake. However, the island’s hidden features are arguably some of its best. Visit Shingle Beach and spend an afternoon exploring Stromberg Falls and the nearby karst caves, or bring a kayak and paddle across to Jedidiah Island Marine Provincial Park. Hikers and bikers can rest easy knowing there are no natural predators found on the island, which also explains the healthy deer population. A blast from the past Over the course of the last 200 years, Texada Island has provided miners with various payloads of iron, copper, gold, marble and limestone. Present-day Van Anda was amalgamated from two different settlements and was a veritable boom town before a devastating fire levelled everything but a bank safe in 1912. Texada Arts, Culture and Tourism Society has put together a self-guided walking tour, leading visitors to an assortment of mining relics and historical sites. The Van Anda Museum operates on varying hours year-round, so be sure to call ahead.

Did you know? Mount Pocahontas is the third-highest peak on Texada Island at 532 metres (1,745 feet) tall. In 1924, its lower ledge became home to the first forest fire lookout in Canada, thanks to its 360-degree views of the Straight of Georgia, Vancouver Island and the coastal mountains.

Whether you prefer a civic park or a neighbourhood schoolyard, there’s plenty of real estate on hand for your little ones to burn off their excess energy. Willingdon Beach is the king of them all, offering a water park, nature trail, playground, bandshell and museum on site. Along the edges of nearby Willingdon Creek sit statues of Popeye, Olive Oil and Wimpy, which began as largerthan-life parade floats, now preserved for decades of enjoyment. The park is also home to many of the community’s largest familyfriendly events, including Canada Day, Logger Sports, Blackberry Festival and BC Bike Race. If you are in need of a larger area for baseball, soccer, frisbee or bocce, try Larry Gouthro Park in upper Westview, D.A. Evans Park in Cranberry or Sunset Park in

Wildwood. Washroom facilities are available at all of Powell River’s civic playgrounds. Most sites are dog-friendly year-round. However, owners are reminded to keep their pets on a leash, discourage digging and to clean up any messes they might leave when nature calls. Take note that dogs, even leashed, are not permitted at Willingdon Beach or Mowat Bay parks between the months of May and September.

Wildlife

Whether you’re partial to deer, dolphins, otters or owls, there is huge potential for an encounter with one of our resident critters. The Powell River area is home to more than 250 species of migratory and nonmigratory birds, including the majestic bald eagle and great blue heron. Seals, whales and dolphins are a frequent find along the coastline, while bears continue to roam the backcountry and fish the local rivers as they have done for thousands of years. Did you know? In Powell River, there’s no such thing as a rope swing. For reasons that have long been forgotten, the word “zunga” has taken its place in the local lexicon. You will find zungas hanging all over town, from the pool at Powell River Recreation Complex to the south side of Wildwood Bridge. Townsite Brewing even makes a delicious, drinkable version.

Follow their food source

Powell River may not be a permanent residence for whales and dolphins, but the area is certainly one of their favourite places to eat. “It’s all about the food,” says MacKay. “They follow the food chain.” Sometimes, that means they can be spotted near the mill; other times at Myrtle Rocks. “Between Coho Point and Vivian Island is where a lot of the humpbacks tend to go,” she adds. “For orcas, it’s wherever there’s lots of seals or sea lions. The dolphins, when they’re foraging, they tend to forage quite close to Whale the shore, especially Texada Island on the Malaspina side.”

“There are whale-watching guidelines,” says MacKay, adding that the animals should never be charged or approached on purpose. “You should stay 100 yards, or 300 feet, away.” If a whale, dolphin or seal suddenly pops up near your boat, MacKay advises to shut off the motor if you can and drift until it passes. “We’re promoting what we call NEWS: neutral, enjoy, wait and slow,” she says. “If you see a blow, go slow.”

Report your sightings

With help from locals and visitors, Wild Ocean Whale Society keeps constant track of the various whales, dolphins and porpoises passing through the area. “We’re asking people to report their sightings,” says MacKay. “We map them and we post all the sighting reports. There is perhaps no better method of viewing marine life while taking in the sheer scale of our coastal landscape than from a kayak or canoe. The ocean waters that surround Powell River are some of the calmest due to the shelter provided by nearby islands, and with more than 36 named lakes in the area, there is plenty to see further inland as well. The best jumping-off point for these two marine provincial parks is from Lund or Okeover Arm, where multiple rental outfits and tour companies are open to serve you. Calm waters offer a protected ocean experience that is sure to thrill novice and advanced kayakers.

Powell Lake

The waters of Powell Lake are at their calmest during the early morning or late afternoon. Accessible via the Shinglemill in Townsite or Mowat Bay in Cranberry, this glacial lake boasts more than 400 kilometres of shoreline speckled with 200 private land and float cabins.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Powell Forest Canoe Route

A scenic journey stretching 57 kilometres from Lois Lake to the Shinglemill, this trek can be completed in approximately five days with five portages and multiple camping stops along the way. Each of the eight lakes on this route are also accessible by logging road as a shorter paddling excursion, but only on weekends or after 6 pm on weekdays due to industrial traffic. Did you know? Powell River is home to two mixed-dragon-boat teams, Zunga Warriors and Paddling for Life. Hunting

The upper Sunshine Coast offers excellent hunting opportunities, both on the mainland and nearby islands. Texada Island is especially popular, due to an absence of predators and an abundance of black-tailed deer. An extended season is available for bowhunters and most bed and breakfasts there are hunter-friendly. The Powell River backcountry offers larger prey, including prized Roosevelt elk, and those with a BC hunter number can enter a yearly lottery for the coveted chance to harvest one. For your safety, and the safety of others out in the wilderness, be sure to enquire ahead about restrictions and regulations, including any protected or out-of-bounds areas where hunting is not allowed.

“If you don’t have a boat, that’s fine,” says Sansalone. “We have two great fishing piers and quite a few lakes you can access off shore. You can also rent small, non-powered boats. If you do have a boat, then you don’t need a big one. We’re pretty protected as far as the ocean goes.”

Choose the right gear for the job

For lake fishing, Sansalone recommends lures such as the Krocodile Spoon or the Wedding Ring. “The local favourite is called the Cowichan Spoon; definitely the best for trolling,” he says. “For salmon, downriggers definitely do help to get your lure down to the proper depth, but if you don’t have downriggers then a technique called jigging is very effective.”

Know the laws and limits

“Make sure you have your boating licence, that you’re using barbless hooks for salmon and that you have all your safety gear,” says Sansalone. “There are more and more checks happening all the time.”

Many areas remain open and full of activity, even in the wintertime. “If you plan on coming for a winter trip, then December or January is good in salt water; full of our resident salmon,” says Sansalone. “Our lakes are quite good too at that time of year.”

“While you’re fishing you can get yourself some crabs or prawns as well,” says Sansalone. “We have some of the best prawns in the world here in Powell River.” Make sure to do your part in avoiding animal entanglements by trimming your excess line and avoiding large loops.

Don’t forget to look around

Malaspina Strait is a hub of oceanic activity, with plenty of whales and white-sided dolphins swimming nearby. “The ocean is really healthy here right now in Powell River, so not only are you going to catch a fish, you’re going to see all kinds of wildlife,” says Sansalone.

HIKING Take a walk on the wild side! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for an altitude adjustment! From flat ground to sky-high elevations, Powell River region has it all. Not only is there Willingdon Beach Trail, the Sea Walk and more than 400 mixed-use trails to choose from, but also the longest hut-tohut hiking route in Canada. Sunshine Coast Trail is truly world class, with 180-kilometres of traversable terrain and 13 huts for stops and sleeps along the way. open and accessible yearround. Several of the huts are fully winterized and outfitted with pellet stoves for optimal coziness. “The area between Sarah Point and Inland Lake, that’s all snow-free,” says Walz, “So there’s 65 or more kilometres of snow-free hiking, except for the odd day.”

Stretching all the way from Sarah Point to Saltery Bay, the Sunshine Coast Trail is no small feat. Some prefer to conquer it all in one go, but the majority do it in pieces. “The most popular way of using the trail for locals is day trips,” says Walz. “People go to a place where there is a view and/or one of the huts and then turn around and come home.”

Bring shelter and supplies

Although there are sleeping huts along the way that can accommodate up to 12 people, the route’s growing popularity means some may well be at capacity before you arrive. “People should have a tent, especially in the high season,” says Walz. He also advises bringing a compact mosquito screen, along with food, water and basic safety items. “One should always have rain gear, too,” he adds. Collect the stamps

Bringing a smartphone is not only a good idea for safety, but also for its camera capabilities. The Sunshine Coast Trail passport program encourages hikers to collect stamps by taking a selfie at each of the 12 huts along the route. Inside each structure is a poster that reveals which local merchant is awarding stamps for that location. “Once you’ve taken the selfie, you can then go to the corresponding merchant and they will give you a stamp for it,” says Walz. CLIMBING AND BOULDERING From Stillwater Bluffs to the Eldred Valley, Powell River has a variety of crags and canyons that will be sure to satisfy climbers of all ages and abilities. The former offers some of the best sea-cliff climbing in BC, while the latter boasts granite walls to rival Yosemite National Park, up to 900 metres high in some places. Use caution on Goat Lake Main, staying clear of the Eldred Valley between 5 am-6 pm on weekdays when logging trucks are active, but feel free to enjoy to your heart’s content on weekends and holidays. Across town near the Shinglemill you will find the Higgyland cliffs, accessible at all hours. All crags are crowd-free, which is a luxury for visiting climbers. By early fall there will be an indoor climbing gym fully operational in the heart of the Historic Townsite. BIKING As a featured destination of the world-famous BC Bike Race, Powell River has captured the attention of mountain biking enthusiasts far and wide. The quality and sheer number of local trails is staggering, with hundreds of kilometres of crowd-free single track to choose from. Suicide Creek and Mud Lake trails are two of the most popular rides, with dozens more to be found around Duck Lake Protected Area. For something a little less extreme, try a pavement ride on Texada Island or a quick spin through the Willingdon Beach Trail. The community is also home to a state-ofthe-art bike and skateboard park at Powell River Recreation Complex, complete with the first concrete pump track in North America.

Even in the dead of winter, Powell River’s vast trail network is often snow-free. “You can ride here all year on classic cross-country trails that wind through lush, loamy, forested landscapes, even in January while the rest of the country is frozen and snowbound,” says Brewer. “We’re one of the only places in Canada where you can do that.”

EVENTS POWELL RIVER LOGGER SPORTS Much of the Powell River we see today was founded in the early 1900s as a lumber town, so it is only fitting that the community is home to a world-class logger sports and chainsaw carving exhibition. From July 14-16, 2017 at Willingdon Beach, the Loggers Memorial Bowl amphitheatre will showcase exhilarating events such as the underhand chop, springboard chop, chokerman’s races, axe-throwing, tree climbing, single buck, double buck and a high tree act. Competitors will be coming in from around the world. BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL Powell River’s unorthodox celebration of the humble blackberry has undergone several transformations over the course of its 24-year history. What began as a seaside winemaking competition in 1993 soon shifted its focus toward a week of food-centric events. This year’s festival runs from August 12-20, culminating in an all-ages street party and fireworks display in the heart of town. On the evening of Friday, August 18, four blocks of vehicular thoroughfare along Marine Avenue will be cordoned off to allow locals and visitors a chance to eat, socialize and be entertained under the setting sun.
