Paradise Valley

One of Powell River’s best-kept secrets lies just beyond the city centre. Paradise Valley is home to fertile farmland and some of the best horse-riding trails on the Sunshine Coast. Every weekend from May to September, Paradise Exhibition Park hosts a popular farmer’s market with local vendors and live music in abundance. The site is also home to a miniature railroad, with 800 feet of rideable track that is sure to be a hit with young visitors. Further along Padgett Road you will find access to West Lake, a hidden gem with warm waters and woodland views. We recommend reaching it by 4x4 vehicle or a short hike, but remember to pack out everything you brought in, as there are no garbage receptacles on site.

Westview

Scenic and central, Westview is Powell River’s modern-day city centre. Not only does the area house the majority of the city’s population, but also a variety of businesses, services and public spaces. Two main roads, Marine Avenue and Joyce Avenue, run parallel to one another and will lead the way toward all sorts of amenities and activities.

Joyce Avenue is home to the Town Centre Mall, as well as a recently refurbished hotel, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants and big box stores. Crossroads Village Shopping Centre provides additional retail and dining options, alongside the brand new Powell River Public Library. The bright and sunny 17,000-square-foot facility opened in July 2017 to the delight of residents and visitors who pop in to browse the 50,000 titles on display. Fans of athletics, aquatics and the arts will find much to do at Powell River Recreation Complex, accessible from Joyce Avenue by road and by the McGuffie Creek Pedestrian Bridge. There you will find Hap Parker Arena, home to the Powell River Kings Junior A hockey team; and Evergreen Theatre, which plays host to many local and touring performances each year. The complex is also home to another ice surface, a 25-metre lap pool, hot tub, fitness centre, several multipurpose rooms and an outdoor bike and skateboard park.

TOWNSITE HISTORIC PATRICIA THEATRE | MEMORY ATTIC

Cranberry

Cute and colourful, Cranberry is the ideal place for a swim, hike or weekend brunch. All amenities are just a stone’s throw from one another, making it a great area of the city to explore on foot. Grabbing a bite at Magpie’s Diner is a must, followed by a scenic climb to the top of Valentine Mountain or a dip in the calm blue waters of Mowat Bay. Bring a picnic basket to Lindsay Park for a peaceful snack overlooking Cranberry Lake, or continue on to Haywire Bay and Inland Lake, easily accessible via nearby Haslam Road. The former boasts a 48-site campground while the latter offers a 13-kilometre wheelchair accessible path along the shoreline.

Townsite

Over the course of its 109-year history, Powell River’s historic Townsite has been home to many British Columbia firsts: the first medical plan, first credit union, first rotary-dial telephone and first radio telephone to name a few. All were important infrastructure that bolstered the Powell River Company’s booming pulp and paper operations. In its heyday, the mill was the largest such facility in existence, employing nearly 3,000 workers and supplying four per cent of the world’s newsprint. Although the mill’s original footprint has changed significantly since 1910, Catalyst Paper Corporation employs nearly 400 residents today. The surrounding area features 12 surviving commercial buildings and 400 private homes, all constructed between 1910 and 1930 as Powell River Company set up and expanded its operations. Much of Townsite’s original architecture was built in the Arts and Crafts bungalow or Tudor Revival style, save for a few noticeable exceptions. These days, many of the original civic services have moved to Westview and made way for new establishments such as Townsite Brewing, The Old Courthouse Inn and Townsite Market. Dwight Hall, the extravagant company ballroom, has stayed true to its original usage and still plays host to dozens of concerts, weddings and events each year. The same can be said for The Patricia Theatre, Canada’s longest continuously operating movie house. Townsite Heritage Society has put together a beautiful map containing 17 points of interest, all within walking distance of each other. Be sure to pick one up at the Visitor Centre and enjoy a few hours of exploring on your own, or book a guided tour during the summer months.

Wildwood

Wildwood is located just to the north of Powell River’s Historic Townsite neighbourhood, connected by a bridge that spans a lakeside area known as the Shinglemill. The facility produced cedar shakes for more than 40 years, beginning in 1913. Today, it is a popular restaurant and marina where many go to watch the boats going by. Up the hill you will find fertile farmland and many popular hiking trails, including those leading to Scout Mountain. Accessible via the end of Sutherland Street and conquered in under an hour, this day hike pays handsomely with panoramic ocean views. The newly renovated Wildwood Public House will be the perfect place to quench your thirst after a hike, serving up an assortment of brews. PAGE 8 • DISCOVER POWELL RIVER 2018

Did you know? At only 500 metres in length, Powell River, after which the city was named, is the second shortest river in the world. It was first dammed in 1910 and later raised in 1924 to generate more power for the mill.

HULKS THE HULKS | BETH RAND

Get up close and personal with the mill’s famous breakwater. An arc of former unpowered ferro-cement supply barges, each with its own unique story to tell. Most of the current vessels date back to the World War II era but the longest, SS Peralta, was built in 1921 and is the last American-built concrete ship still afloat. Three are slated to begin a new chapter as artificial reefs in the coming years, joining YOGN 82, so make sure to get plenty of photos before they sink. The hulks are viewed best from the Townsite viewpoint on Marine Avenue; up a block, beside the Lawn Bowling Club; or from the shores of Second Beach.

Tla’amin Nation

Powell River is located on the territories of the Coast Salish, where indigenous peoples have lived harmoniously with these lands for thousands of years. We encourage you to honour their culture and learn about their traditions during your visit. From Lang Bay to Bute Inlet, the Tla’amin has fostered a deep connection with the area and its abundant resources. Archaeological sites around Powell River, Texada, Ahgykson (formerly Harwood Island) and Okeover show significant activity that we are only beginning to comprehend as time goes on. The mill site and dam are located atop the original settlement of the Tla’amin people, an area known as Tiys’ Kwat, or “big river.” Prior to the 1870s, this land was used for habitation and spiritual activities by the Tla'amin Coast Salish, whose population was estimated to have been between 4,000 to 5,000 people. The current Tla’amin village site, called Tishosem, is located between Wildwood and Lund, and is presently home to 1,000 residents. A treaty agreement that took effect in April 2016 was a major milestone for the now-self-governing Tla’amin Nation, representing a confirmation of land and resource rights and the return of 8,323 hectares of territory. As a symbol of significant ancestral, historical and cultural events, including the treaty, you will find several totem poles standing proud in the Powell River area. Most prominently, they can be spotted in Westview at the viewpoint on Marine Avenue and Ajoomixw Park on Wharf Street, at the viewpoint in Townsite and outside the new Government House building in Tla’amin.

Best known today as the gateway to Desolation Sound and the Copeland Islands, Lund found its origins in 1889 as a rugged fishing village. It received its name following the arrival of the Swedish Thulin brothers who built the Lund Hotel in 1905. The building still stands today as a testament to their craftsmanship and overlooks a bustling harbour and busy government wharf. Renovations earlier this year have transformed the space into a place reflective of the first nations history that surrounds it. What Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park lacks in name it makes up for in sheer beauty. Located 32 kilometres north of Powell River, the park is comprised of a series of islands, coves and inlets that are sheltered from the elements due to their unique location. These warm, deep waters are revered among swimmers, kayakers and scuba divers, who find much to discover within. The sound is also frequented by yachters, who anchor their vessels to marvel at the natural wonders known as Prideaux Haven, Tenedos Bay and Grace Harbour. Surrounded by warm waters and golden sandy beaches, Savary Island has often been called the “Hawaii of the North.” The government dock is accessible by float plane, boat or water taxi from Lund Harbour. Nearly all property is under private ownership, but the beaches and access roads are public and there are plenty of opportunities to rent your own little slice of paradise during the summer months. This unique, crescent-shaped island is loved by residents for its tropical feel and laid-back vibe. In the summer its population can balloon from 100 to 2,000 or more. Fair warning: the area does command a little extra preparation due to the mixture of private and public spaces to be found there, so it is important to do your homework before arriving. For example, Savary’s star attractions, Indian Point and South Beach, are not what greet you when you arrive at the wharf. Come prepared with a map so you can find your intended destinations and avoid any accidental trespassing along the way.

However, the island’s hidden features are arguably some of its best. Visit Shingle Beach and spend an afternoon spelunking in the natural karsks near Stromberg Falls, or bring a kayak and paddle across to Jedidiah Island Marine Provincial Park.

Powell River offers a wide array of swimming spots to help you beat the summer heat. Hands down, the most accessible are Willingdon Beach and Mowat Bay, both with ample parking just minutes from the centre of town. Haywire Bay, Gibson’s Beach and Second Beach take a little more effort to find but are worth it every time. For more secluded options, try Hammil (West) Lake, Inland Lake or Eagle River. If sandy shores are what you’re looking for, head south of town to Donkersley, Mahood and Palm beaches. Beach access signs can be found all along the highway, or stop by the Visitor Centre and let its friendly staff point you in the right direction.

Tip from a local A great place to go swimming in Lund is less than a five-minute walk away. From the wooden boardwalk, climb the cement steps, then continue to the Beach Access sign. The ocean waters that surround Powell River are some of the calmest due to the shelter provided by nearby islands. Desolation Sound and the Copeland Islands are a must-see. These two marine parks are accessible from Lund or Okeover Arm, abundant with sea stars, sea urchins, sea anemones, and sea cucumbers. Or, put in near the mill and see the Hulks up close. Powell Lake is a fresh-water option closer to the town centre, one of 36 named lakes in the region, with more than 400 kilometres of shoreline to discover.

Canoeing

There is much to discover by navigating the waters near Texada, Savary, Ahgykson (formerly Harwood) and Mitlenatch Islands, as the Tla’amin people have done for thousands of years. However, there is even more canoeing to be found inland. The world-renowned Powell Forest Canoe Route is a scenic journey stretching 57 kilometres from Lois Lake to the Shinglemill. This trek can be completed in approximately five days with five portages and multiple camping stops along the way. From crabs to coho, Powell River offers a nautical bounty that is within easy reach. Cast a line from one of two piers in the heart of Westview or fire up your motor and head toward popular destinations such as Grant Reefs, Sarah Point and the Iron Mines. Prime time lasts from May until early fall as local salmon are joined by migrating fish. Cutthroat trout are abundant in most freshwater areas and Lois Lake has been known to yield landlocked steelhead weighing up to 15 pounds. The area’s oysters, clams, geoducks and prawns are all top-notch, and many hotspots are located quite close to one another, providing a full day’s worth of fishing fun.

Hunting

The upper Sunshine Coast offers excellent hunting opportunities, both on the mainland and nearby islands. Texada Island is especially popular due to an absence of predators and an abundance of black-tailed deer. An extended season is available for bowhunters and most bed and breakfasts there are hunter-friendly. Powell River's backcountry offers larger prey, including prized Roosevelt elk. Those with a BC hunter number can enter a yearly lottery for the coveted chance to harvest one. Powell River may not be a permanent residence for whales and dolphins but the area is certainly one of their favourite places to eat. PILGRIMAGE TO POWELL RIVER: Hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail Words and photos by Paige Lucas Powell River is nestled in a devastatingly beautiful pocket of the British Columbia coastline. Originally a logging settlement, it is so remote it might as well be on an island. The countless jagged mountains make it impossible to drive there. A ferry or a small 16-passenger plane are the only options for arrival. But despite the difficulty of getting there, this little town of 20,000 people thrives on tourism due to its accessible and magnificent outdoor recreation opportunities. The 110-mile Sunshine Coast Trail is just one of those. It follows the mountains from one plot of coast to another, skirting the edges of town along the way. I learned of its existence when I saw a map of the trail in a local magazine during a 2016 family trip. Powell River is so small, I was shocked that it was home to Canada’s “longest hut-to-hut hiking trail.” The trail had been sitting there all that time like a big, juicy secret. Once I knew it was there, I couldn’t get it out of my head. I first caught the backpacking bug when my brother gifted me Wild by Cheryl Strayed for Christmas one year. After that, all I wanted to do was hike the Appalachian Trail after graduating from college. My parents didn’t understand the desire and feared what would happen to me alone in the wilderness. They forbade me to go without a partner. So, I found one and made it 800 miles before hopping off the trail to start my career in Boston. I cried for days after my parents picked me up. I was coming down from a huge daily dose of endorphins, mourning an experience I knew I would likely never have again, and grieving the friendships that I knew had ended with my hike. They didn’t understand my misery – and how could they? Backpacking is an extremely immersive experience that was impossible for them to imagine. » PAGE 24 • DISCOVER POWELL RIVER 2019

Ever since my stint on the Appalachian Trail, I’ve longed for another wilderness adventure. When my parents said we were visiting Powell River again last year, I immediately announced I would fly in early and hike the Sunshine Coast Trail. I didn’t even think for a minute anyone else would be interested. But my father quickly chimed in, “Well, I’ll go with you!” I looked at him in surprise. “You will?!” I asked. I’m sure he offered partly to keep me from setting off alone, but as time went on it became clear he had his own reasons for taking this pilgrimage with me. In some ways, my father has always been an enigma to me. He is comprised of many parts, some that I can’t seem to reconcile. Others, I know I have yet to discover. He was an NHL hockey player who never took much to drinking. His gruff demeanor intimidated nearly all of my childhood friends, but his inner artist led him to create impressionist paintings that now hang about our house with only his initials in their corners to give him away. He survived painful and exhausting cancer treatments without ever showing an ounce of fear. He wrote my mother dreamy love poems about their European travels, but in every birthday card I can remember receiving he penned only a philosophical “What greatness lies within thee?” And, despite his overflowing passion for the great outdoors, he never moved back to his breathtaking hometown of Powell River. Every time we visit Powell River, I wonder — why didn’t he move back here? This trip was no different. In fact, I faced this question more directly than ever before as I watched hiker after hiker ask my father “And you never came back? Why?” It did seem a little crazy, especially on the Sunshine Coast Trail where all you can see in any direction is the humbling beauty that British Columbia has to offer. Just on that first day we passed lush ferns that reached well past our heads, saw a seal soaking up all the sun he could before the rising tide swept him off his rock, and watched a bald eagle swoop down low across Wednesday Lake after our dip. Blackberry bushes eagerly begged us to lessen their load of ripe, juicy fruit. Impossibly tall Douglas firs and cedars quietly draped their boughs over us as we marched in our boots from breakfast until dinner. I had the sense they were keeping watch and wondering about my father, too. Their swaying and swishing whispered across the » PAGE 25 • DISCOVER POWELL RIVER 2019

Hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail continued breeze, “Stay. Stay this time.” The views on the Sunshine Coast Trail drew a swelling warmth from my heart and took any words I could try to speak. Lakes lay strewn across the valleys like freckles. The frosted tips of Whistler mountains peeked at us from behind nearer peaks. Each morning the sky flushed pink and each night it burned orange, following the sun’s lead over the Pacific. Though my father hasn’t lived in his hometown for 46 years, he was still able to identify each island, each mountain, each neighbourhood. He called them all by name and shared the stories he lived out in those places. Every time we visit Powell River, I am reminded just how much that place is a part of my father. Memories and entire parts of himself lay nestled in its landscape. His footsteps line the forest floor, his sweat flows from one lake to the next. Hiking with him, I felt like we were together retracing his steps from childhood to adulthood. “It’s a kind of pilgrimage,” he said. Silently, I agreed. It was sacred. I was born and raised in Maine, where my parents still reside. It is rugged and worn by harsh winters. I love driving through its pine tree tunnels and exploring its biologically rich tidepools. I relish in the eerie sound of an unseen foghorn on a cloudy day, or the lapping of waves against the side of a docked lobster boat. There is something thrilling about the sting of frozen winter air reaching deep into your bones. »

Powell River can feel similar. It, too, has a Swiss cheese landscape of lakes dotting land and islands dotting the ocean. Seagulls cry out and garter snakes slither alongside ponds. Bears feast on fruits and bugs. But, its temperate rainforest climate and ancient forests remind me that it is not mine the way Maine is mine. It is not my home in the way it is my father’s. Still, it formed my father and my father formed me. We are related, me and this place. It flows in my veins. It lies beneath my skin. My father is not one to share his feelings, especially not painful ones. I also hold deeper pains close to my chest. I always feel a sadness for my father when we visit Powell River that is hard to articulate, and I wonder if he feels it, too. He made the choice with my mother to settle somewhere else, and I know they are happy with their choice. But choosing one thing inevitably means giving up another. Who would I have become, had I grown up here? The last mile of that first day was extremely difficult, but the destination for the evening was atop a bluff with sweeping views of the mainland mountains and island-dotted coast. As soon as he dropped his pack, my father laid back on a picnic table bench and exclaimed “Oh, that little breeze feels so good! I can’t believe it!” He kept repeating those words over and over again like a prayer of thanks. »

Hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail continued My feet travelled many miles as we settled into our daily rhythms for waking, eating, walking and sleeping, but my heart was on a journey, too. A journey with my father, for my father, of my father. I saw more of him in the land and saw more of myself in him with each arduous step. I think he knows now why I wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail years ago, and that makes my heart sing. Our likeness surfaced in different forms. We are both headstrong and try to avoid showing weakness. When we ran low on snack bars, we started fighting – but not in the way you’d expect. We each argued vehemently that the other needed the food more and stubbornly refused to eat it. It was obstinance, but it was also sacrifice. We also both love the outdoors for the solitude and peace it provides. On our last night, we were planning to stay at a hut near the tallest peak on the trail. But, as we unpacked our things alongside a family of nine, we read in the trail guide that there was a place to sleep at the summit. We both looked at each other and, without speaking, simultaneously decided to re-pack everything and push on. The extra mileage was worth it. We had the highest summit to ourselves on our last night for both the sunset and the sunrise. Our 11 days on the trail together felt fleeting, but in truth they are not. They sprawl out with the dense moss and tangled roots that hold up the old growth forests. They move over stones with the rushing streams. They blanket the ground with the fallen pine needles. Our memories will forever lie embedded in that dazzling patch of earth we traversed. Wildlife and Birdwatching

From owls to ospreys, the Powell River area is alive with many exciting bird species to observe and photograph. Last year, the area received a rare treat when a Costa’s hummingbird took up residence in the garden near Donkersley Beach. Birdwatchers flew in from far and wide to catch a glimpse. Other species, such as loons, osprey, marbled murrelets, harlequins, cormorants and scooters, are a bit more common. However, bald eagles and great blue herons are by far the area’s most prevalent species and can be spotted daily along Marine Avenue and the sea walk. Even the crows and seagulls look special in our coastal paradise. In addition to birds, the region is flush with wildlife, both on land and in the ocean and surrounding lakes. Orcas, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea otters, harbour seals and Stellar sea lions patrol the oceans, while cougars and black bears share the backcountry with deer, and the multitude of furry squirrels and beavers that populate areas along trails, lakes and rivers.

Visual Arts

Several renowned visual artists have chosen to make their homes and studios in Powell River, favouring the area for its laid-back atmosphere and exquisite beauty. Organizations such as the Malaspina Art Society and Powell River Council for Arts, Culture and Heritage exist to promote and preserve the creative richness among us. Home studios come alive every August during the Powell River Studio Tour, and works are sold year-round at Artique, Wind Spirit Gallery, Rare Earth Pottery, Tug Ghum Gallery, and Gallery on Dogwood in Van Anda. A brand new showcase space, known as The Art Centre, opened in early 2018 above Powell River Public Library and will host a rotating assortment of themed installations throughout the coming year. Other public venues, including Vancouver Island University, Coastal Cookery, Magpie’s Diner, Little Hut Curry and The Old Courthouse Inn, have also filled their walls with local art. Even Willingdon Beach gets in on the action once a year, transforming into a colourful artists’ village for Arts Alive in the Park. The event will take place August 18 and 19 this year.

Locally raised musicians, dancers and actors have taken their training to lofty heights on the world stage. Dancer Onna White was nominated for a Tony award for her work as choreographer of the movie Oliver! Multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson won three Juno Awards as one of Canada’s premiere jazz musicians. Tla'amin Nation's Evan Adams garnered worldwide recognition for his starring roles in Smoke Signals and The Business of Fancydancing. In 2004, Powell River was designated a Cultural Capital of Canada by the Department of Canadian Heritage and events such as International Choral Kathaumixw and Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA) have only furthered the city’s reputation as a destination for music and the arts. Since 1981, Powell River Academy of Music has been training singers and instrumentalists of all ages and ability levels, while other institutions, such as the Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy, Far Off Broadway and Theatre Now, have further shaped the cultural landscape and created additional opportunities for creative expression.

“It’s about time.” Three words that inspired Powell River’s newest musical spectacle. Founded in 2017, Townsite Jazz Festival aims to attract some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians to Powell River, on a mission to entertain a coastal community and inspire a new generation of artists. Director Paul Cummings, a lifelong jazz enthusiast and ‘brains behind’ the event, has recruited a team of heavy-hitters including associate president Phil Dwyer, one of this country’s foremost stewards of the jazz tradition. Intimate venues and a historic neighbourhood serve as the perfect backdrop for a genre that only gets better with age – and with a $20 cap on tickets, merchandise and registration fees, even the prices are a blast from the past! After an inaugural year that filled venues and thrilled jazz-lovers, the Townsite Jazz Festival returns April 4-6, 2019.

Attracting an entire orchestra worth of student musicians from around the world, PRISMA (Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy) runs for two weeks every June, giving locals and visitors a chance to watch a symphony grow and develop right before their eyes. Powell River’s unorthodox celebration of the humble blackberry has undergone several transformations over the course of its 26year history. What began as a seaside winemaking competition in 1993 soon shifted its focus toward a week of food-centric events. The festival culminates in an all-ages street party and fireworks display in the heart of town. On the evening of Friday, August 16, four blocks of vehicular thoroughfare along Marine Avenue will be cordoned off to allow locals and visitors a chance to eat, socialize and be entertained under the setting sun.

Now entering its 35th year, Texada Island Sandcastle Weekend brings together a random mix of pastimes that truly offer something for everyone. Festivities on Saturday, August 3, begin with the always popular parade in the morning. Participants, fun floats, bands and cars will follow a short route through the village of Gillies Bay. There is also a car show and shine, bed races and a kids’ zone featuring a bouncy castle. Live music and more than 30 vendors of food, arts and crafts will also surround the ball field in Gillies Bay. There is usually bingo in the afternoon and in the evening you can head down to Shelter Point for a lip-synch contest, moon-bag ceremony and laser light show to close out the night. Sunday begins with a pancake breakfast followed by the actual namesake event of the weekend, the sand sculpture competition, taking place between 10 and 3 pm at Gillies Bay Beach.
