SUNSHINE COAST BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA 2016 FREE
When I was growing up in Powell River in the '80s and '90s, there were only a dozen or so skateboarders in town. On weekends, I would get up early and take a few runs on the halfpipe ramp that myself, my stepdad and friends built ourselves in the backyard of my Grief Point home, then begin my long journey into town, through Townsite and eventually up to Wildwood where one friend had a larger ramp, picking up other skaterboarders along the way. We didn't have a skateboard park (later, in the mid-'90s, we would raise money to build the original skateboard bowl that still sits at Powell River Recreation Complex next to the new, state-of-the-art bike and skate park), but we did have each other and our beautiful surroundings. Of course, when you are a teenager you don't always notice the picturesque nature of your surroundings while sitting on a gas-station curb, talking about heavy metal and drinking Slurpees. But it was there, all around us. Powell River, like many small cities, has changed radically in the past three decades. And not just in the sheer number of skateboarders and BMXers who use the new park, but in that special feeling, all around us. Our community is strong. When tourists come through our city, wheth-
er they decide to stay for a few hours between ferries or just buy a house on a whim and never leave (I've heard of this happening on more than a few occasions), they never forget this place. I have returned to Powell River numerous times in my life after living in Vancouver and Victoria. I keep telling people that I always find my way back here, that it must mean something. When I was a teenaged, metalhead skateboarder, I always wanted to get out of here, go to the big city and surround myself with likeminded people with common interests. If you read the blurb in my grade 12 yearbook, it correctly predicts me picking up and leaving this place as soon as I graduated. But we all have a home. Powell River is mine. I travel and experience the world, but I come back to one of the most unique communities and geographical areas in the world. If you are new to town, or just visiting, welcome. If you call Powell River home, you are one of the lucky ones. Look around. We have a lifetime of experiences and opportunities right outside our front doors. Welcome from the mayor We invite you to experience the City of Powell River firsthand. It is my belief that once you visit our fair community and discover all that is available to you, the idea of pulling up roots and moving here will be a great temptation. Many have chosen to move here over the years and are great proponents for the incredibly diverse lifestyle options. We offer an astonishing mix of urban and rural amenities, affordable cost of living in a safe environment, excellent education options, a vibrant arts and culture community, stunning sea-to-mountain recreation areas and a passionate spirit of community. The Sunshine Coast Trail, a 180-kilometre trail stretching from Sarah Point to Saltery Bay, negotiates a wide variety of landscapes from coastal shorelines, along creeks and lakes, through old-growth forests to panoramic mountaintops. As we boast a vast network of multi-use trails on the Upper Sunshine Coast, we have hosted the BC Bike Race, earning us a reputation as a world-class biking destination. Our numerous beaches, pristine lakes and wonderful mountains are also the envy of many communities. Powell River’s Townsite
neighbourhood, where the past and future meet, was designated a National Historic District of Canada in 1995. Every two years Powell River Academy of Music organizes and hosts the International Choral Kathaumixw festival, a gathering of different peoples. Choirs from all over the world participate. Powell River is also extremely proud to host the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA), which provides indepth orchestral training for music students and aspiring professionals. Events such as this have attracted widespread recognition and, in 2004, helped earn Powell River the title of Cultural Capital of Canada. City council recognizes the importance of fostering economic viability while preserving a vibrant, secure and healthy community. We are also committed to enhancing the sustainability of our community, which includes making our structural and social environments accessible and inclusive to everyone. Could we be the location of your next family or retirement home? Come see us to find out. We are well worth the journey and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Powell River is about 145 kilometres north of Vancouver, BC, near the end-or start, depending on how you look at it-of Highway 101, which hugs the coast of North and South America all the way to Chile. It takes about five hours to get here from the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal in Vancouver. Drivers will enjoy two ferry rides among some of the most beautiful West Coast scenery. From Victoria, take the Vancouver Island Highway to Courtenay, then follow the signs to the ferry terminal at Little River.

Island magic draws people off the grid Unique beauty of destination attracts residents and tourists By Megan Cole The islands of British Columbia's coast have been popular hideaways and getaways for people from all over the world, and even though Savary Island has remained off the beaten path, those who find themselves there never want to leave. When Nicholas Newroth first set foot on Savary 11 years ago, he says he immediately fell in love with what is commonly referred to as the magic of the island. “A friend and his wife had bought a couple lots and were bringing a truck and travel-trailer up to Savary Island,” says Newroth. “They
asked me if I wanted to come too and I said, 'Where?' I had no idea where Savary was, but I fell in love with the place. There aren't even really the words to describe the emotions I feel for this place.” Having moved from the Victoria, Newroth was used to the sounds of the city, including sirens and street traffic. He remembers that as he sat out on the deck of his new Savary Island home, all he could hear were eagles, the wind in the trees and the sound of waves lapping on the shore. With a small, close-knit community of full-time residents, Savary

Island has developed a laid back and easy feel. Population in the fall and winter is less than 100 people, but that increases to more than 2,000 people in the summer. “There are so many small things that you take for granted after you've been here,” says Newroth. “It's a complete change between winter and summer, but it still doesn't feel too busy in the summer. You don't feel crowded.” Considering Savary’s size, 0.8 to 1.5 kilometres wide and 7.5 kilometres long, it can be surprising that when the summer visitors
arrive a quiet spot can still be found on the expansive white sand beaches. Savary Island Resort owner Kim Wall says tranquility is just one of the many things that adds to the island's magic. “It's the most peaceful and tranquil place, you can go down to Mermaid Beach in the middle of August and not see a soul,” says Wall, a former full-time island resident. Wall first visited Savary when she met her husband, who had owned property on the island for nearly 25 years. Like Newroth, Wall says she was immediately captured by the island's magic, the

“You have to bring all of your own consumables,” she says. Many people stop in Powell River or Lund to pick up necessary groceries and other items, but if anything is forgotten, there are a couple of retail stores on Savary that are open seasonally. Unlike many of the other islands in the area, such as Texada or Denman, the only way to get to Savary is by private boat or water taxi from Lund. Vehicle access to the island by barge is largely reserved for property owners. For those who need help getting to where they're staying on the island, a land taxi is also available to help transport visitors and guests. beauty of the beaches and the unique environment and community that occurs when a place develops in isolation from the rest of the world. While Savary might seem like a sleepy place to visit, Wall says there are many activities that keep people busy. “There's hiking, biking, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, walking and beachcombing,” she says. “This is going to be our seventh year in operation, we've had hundreds and hundreds of guests and I've never had anyone tell me they were bored.” One thing Wall says visitors need be aware of as they plan a trip to Savary is that they need to approach it like camping.

sunshine coast trail
Hiking route provides world-class experience Beautiful views and terrain are complemented by volunteer-built cabins along 180-kilometre trail By Megan Cole Unlike any other trail in Canada, Sunshine Coast Trail shows off the awe-inspiring landscape, terrain and views of the Powell River area. Starting at Sarah Point, north of Powell River near Lund, and finishing in Saltery Bay, hikers weave their way through old-growth forests and from lakesides to mountaintops on what Explore Magazine recently referred to as one of the 50 best hikes in the world. However, Sunshine Coast Trail isn’t like the other treks on the list that are usually main-
tained and built by paid parks staff. This 180-kilometre trail was built and maintained by a devoted group of volunteers. When Jim Stutt first started going into the area that would become the Sunshine Coast Trail he likely didn’t know the role he would play in the development of the now internationally sought-after outdoor experience. Stutt, who is a general contractor in Powell River, says he started going out on the trail nearly 20 years ago with one of its founders, Eagle Walz. Stutt began helping with trail
construction, but then as the group decided to incorporate huts onto the trek, he was able to take his professional experience and contribute that to the design and construction of what has now become 12 structures and 400 wooden signs. “It’s been a great, fun ride,” says Stutt. “It takes anywhere up to 2,000 hours of volunteer labour to build one of the insulated huts. We’ve received funding for materials and transport to build all the huts with volunteer labour. It was just a matter of coming up with

a design of what would be practical and roomy, and as inexpensive as possible.” Stutt says the basic design of the huts is very similar except for the three fully winterized alpine huts at Tin Hat, Walt Hill and Mount Troubridge. While the huts serve many uses, including escapes from bad weather and overnight getaways for short-distance hikers, Stutt says they have also become a gathering place for
visitors from all over the world. “When we’re working up at these huts we meet people from all over the world,” he says. “One time we were building a hut with the Rotary Club of Powell River up at Rainy Day Lake and six British soldiers showed up who were doing half the trail.” Stutt adds he has met people from England, California, Southeast Asia, Australia and Europe while working on the trail.

old-growth forest in the front country. Development of trails that would eventually build to be the Sunshine Coast Trail began in 1992. “We began building trails that would connect about five patches of old growth, as well as other features such as riparian zones along lake shores, rivers and creeks, and viewpoints in the mountains,” says Walz. After much research and help from volunteers, Walz says they had finished the whole length of the trail in 1999. Powell River Parks and Wilderness Society, the non-profit organization committed to protecting areas linked by forest-trail corridors, including the Sunshine Coast Trail, has continued to improve and maintain the trail and its amenities to provide what has proven to be a world-class experience. Tla’amin Nation and its road to self-governance The path to treaty implementation long but hopeful By Chris Bolster Tla’amin Nation, Powell River area’s first nation, steps into a new era on April 5, 2016, the effective date of its treaty. While the agreement with the provincial and federal governments has been more than 20 years in the making, it represents a solid step toward reconciliation, says Roy Francis, chief treaty negotiator for Tla’amin. Tla’amin’s agreement received final federal approval in June 2014, though it would not come into effect for almost two years, giving the nation time to prepare. According to the federal government, it brings certainty to the first nation’s aboriginal rights, land title and provides economic benefits. The deal includes 8,300 hectares of land, approximately $30 million and self-government, among other provisions. Francis says there is deep significance watching construction of the first nation’s government house, located approximately five minutes north of Powell River’s Wildwood neighbourhood, and moving from its current band administration building. “It’s very symbolic and satisfying,” says
Francis. “It’s a visible change into a new world for us.” Francis explains the treaty helps Tla’amin build a better future and it would not have been possible without a series of conversations about how to make that future happen, instigated by former chief Eugene Louie in the early 1990s. “We started by making a long list,” says Francis, who has seen the treaty process through from the start. “It was a simple challenge that developed into picking a couple of priorities and tackling projects.” That goal-oriented process, started in 1994, helped lay foundations for what would eventually become the first stages on Tla’amin’s treaty, says Francis. “We learned this work makes a difference. It changes lives.” A consequence of the lengthy process is many of the Tla’amin elders Francis and his colleagues interviewed are no longer living and did not have the chance to see the agreement implemented. “It’s humbling to realize how important those memories were to this.”

The elders’ stories provided researchers with enough information about the locations of the community’s hunting and fishing grounds, campsites and collection areas for traditional medicine that they were able to create a map of Tla’amin traditional territory over 600,000 hectares. From there they were able to determine what resources were held and what interests would need to be negotiated. “Knowing what’s out there is hugely important,” says Francis. Though challenges were overcome during the 20-year process, Francis says the agreement is really directed at the future and provides “security we never had before with a land base we have title to.” He adds the agreement will have a positive impact on the region as a whole. “Something that’s good for Tla’amin is going to be good for Powell River,” he says. “It’s going to be good for our neighbours. Our kids go to the same schools. We go to the same grocery stores. [Tla’amin] is going to be a bigger part of the economy and that’s going to be good for the whole area.”

fishing
If you are planning a fishing trip or holiday to the Powell River area, you will not be disappointed. This area provides great salmon fishing, world-class trout fishing and the best prawns in the world. Here are some great tips to help you get the most out of Powell River.
FLY FISHING: Fly fishermen be warned,
PAGE 22
have lots of backing. Troll, jig, spin-cast or double-haul your fly to catch these big boys. There are many local hot spots and generally if the weather is good, all hot spots are very accessible. Texada and Harwood islands also provide a wind break if the weather picks up. This enables anglers with smaller boats around 14 feet to access prime spots.
PRAWNS/CRABS: This fishery is one of the tastiest. Prawns are found throughout the Powell River area in about 250 to 400 feet of water. Lower your prawn traps to the bottom, retrieve after about four to six hours and enjoy. Crabs are found mostly around Harwood and Savary islands in about 25 to 150 feet of water.

Salmon are targeted all year round in Powell River but there are definite peak times. Let’s start with winter fishing. December to February is probably one of the most productive times to fish for winter chinook salmon. The fish range from eight to 20 pounds and are found in mostly 150 to 225 feet of water as they follow the herring and other food sources. Downriggers are a must to get your lure/bait to the target area. This fishery is followed by the summer salmon season from May to August. The resident winter fish are joined by migrating salmon and fishing heats up all over the area. Fish are found in shallower water from 30 to 200 feet.

LAKES
LISA CIMAGLIA PHOTO
With 32 lakes in the Powell River region there are plenty of opportunities to go boating. From dinghies to 24-foot powerboats, all types can be found on bigger lakes. Powell Lake, the largest body of water in the area, is a boater’s playground. Cabin owners must use a boat to reach their lake abodes and day-trippers head up to their favourite spots. A well-marked connection through a flooded riverway brings you into medium-sized Goat Lake. Dodd Lake, one of the Gordon Pasha chain, also attracts powerboats, sea-doos, boogie boarders and tubing enthusiasts. Smaller lakes like Inland and Haslam have size restrictions on motors that can be used. There are no restrictions on kayaks, canoes or rowboats that require human energy.

WILLINGDON BEACH
Located conveniently in the Westview neighbourhood, Willingdon Beach is close to everything. It’s a well-developed park with a children’s play area, playground equipment and a water park. The shore is sandy and sheltered by a breakwater. There is a fast food and ice-cream stand, plenty of well-groomed lawn, trees for shade and restrooms. A full-service camping area is adjacent to the beach. Special swimming spots can be found all along the beach trail, especially First and Second beaches where you will be entertained by sea lions on the breakwater near The Hulks, a breakwater formed by old World War II supply ships.
POWELL LAKE
Sheltered on either side by steep, forested mountains, Powell Lake is deep and inviting. Its best shore swimming can be found at Mowat Bay in Cranberry. There is a large sandy beach bordered by a grassy knoll, plenty of parking, picnic tables and change rooms. Haywire Bay is a regional park with space for camping and a protected swimming area. It’s close enough to town for a family day trip. Across Wildwood Bridge and past The Shinglemill Pub and Bistro is a dog-friendly beach frequented by residents and their canine family members. Late in the summer, plump blackberries hang from bushes offering a tasty treat before a cooling dip.

INLAND LAKE: About 20 minutes from town, Inland Lake is popular for swimming as well as picnicking, biking and hiking. It’s wheelchair accessible. DONKERSLEY BEACH: Hawaii comes to mind when you walk along Donkersley Beach, south of Powell River. It’s a terrific place for youngsters as there is little slope so when the tide comes, the water is shallow. The beach is wonderful for building sandcastles. PALM BEACH: A large grassy field is a popular picnic area for families who come here to frolic in the sea. Children love to float around on logs that wash up on the beach. When the tide it out, this is a perfect area for building sandcastles.

The swimming areas are surrounded by a fullyequipped campsite and RV park, including hot showers. GIBSON'S BEACH: Just north of the neighbourhood of Wildwood, Gibson's Beach is the choice of locals. It also features a boat ramp.

SAVARY ISLAND
As you head toward those glacial reefs and white sandy beaches, just a few kilometres’ paddle from Lund, keep your eyes open for sea lions, bald eagles and a variety of sea birds, all waiting for their breakfast to surface. Kayaking is especially good on the southwest side of Savary, where it is too rocky for powerboats. The water is shallow here and you will likely see many types of marine life.
ON A LAKE
Lake kayaking is a quieter activity than the ocean-travelling type with challenges of waves and tides. Powell River has plenty of opportunities for both with miles of shoreline and nearby islands as well as an abundance of lakes within an easy distance from city centre.

Rock Climbing
Powell River is home to hundreds of diverse climbs that cover the entire spectrum of disciplines: seaside cliffs, forest bouldering, hard-sport routes, moderate multi-pitch trad routes, and full-on 20-pitch clean and aid lines in the remote, but accessible, Eldred Valley, as well as great alpine rock and ice routes. Two things that set climbing in Powell River apart from climbing in more populated centres: there are no crowds, and there is phenomenal potential for new route development.

CITY OF POWELL RIVER PHOTO
Bike park one of best in Canada By Chris Bolster Thousands of curious bike riders from Powell River and afar have sampled our new bike park’s various bumps, jumps and ramps since its opening in 2015. Alpine Bike Parks, the Whistler-based company that built the park located adjacent to Powell River Recreation Complex, was able to fine-tune the one-hectare park’s five courses designed for all ages and skill levels. The design of the park incorporates a blend of features, taking the best of Whistler’s own park, but also competition courses from around North America. The park includes advanced features like a 1,200-pound log canon and an up-ramp. Two pump tracks, one concrete, the other dirt, and progressive courses will help novice riders build skills. “When we designed it we wanted to make it something that was unique and would re-
ally excite the riders,” says Morgan Benbough, project manager for Alpine. As for the concrete pump track, there are very few of its kind in the world, says Benbough. “It’s a great all-weather surface and can be ridden anytime,” he says. “It requires no maintenance because essentially it is like a skate park, and it’ll be very durable and definitely adds a unique aesthetic to the park and something that’s on the cutting edge of mountain bike parks.” The park’s five courses are designed to increase in difficulty as the rider progresses. Andrew Shostak, youth coordinator for Powell River Cycling Association, has been very impressed with the park since its opening. “It has exceeded my expectations,” says Shostak. “It’s great for this town.” Shostak, who also races mountain bikes competitively, explains that he cannot think
of a place in BC, or probably Canada, that has a similar type of facility geared for riders with a range of skill levels. He says the closest might be Whistler, but riders would need to visit several separate locations to find the same progression of skills development. “At this park a kid can start out on the concrete or dirt pump track, do some simple jumps and then move all the way up,” says Shostak. City of Powell River has agreed to take care of some of the park’s maintenance, but riders are also expected to help out to preserve the dirt courses. Shostak says with any course some maintenance will be needed and riders who mark up landing zones are expected to take a minute to fix any marks that may result from awkward landings.

are ready for their experience and not try to ride above their ability level. “You want to ride it based on your ability,” says Pukesh, “and slowly you want to be able to progress to the higher jumps.”
Let’s skate! As if a state-of-the-art bike park wasn’t enough, Powell River also had a new skateboard park open in 2015. The skate park, located right next to the bike park at Powell River Recreation Complex, was built by Spectrum Skateparks, an award-winning company based in North Vancouver that has built parks in many communities across the province. Made entirely out of slick concrete and featuring a larger quarter-pipe ramp, small bowl and a series of pyramids, banks, curbs and rails, the park offers challenges for all skill levels. Since opening, the park has attracted skateboarders, including professional riders, from all over BC and the rest of Canada.
CITY OF POWELL RIVER PHOTO
As the riders are starting out they can do a warmup run or two on the beginner line and then move up to the intermediate. “Each run in itself gets a little more difficult, so the features at the end of one run should be in line with the features at the beginning of the next more difficult run,” says Benbough. “It’s a nice way to slowly work your way up.” Benbough adds there are a lot of ways to link runs together to keep the park fresh. “It gives riders the ability to bridge out and try new things even within the runs themselves.” As with use of any public park or facility, safety is being stressed with the bike-skills park. Fullface helmets and pads are strongly recommended for riders. In addition to those precautions, City of Powell River recreation manager Neil Pukesh says the park has adopted the mantra of “pre-ride, reride and free-ride,” a process to help riders make sure they

Food lovers engage in yearly event to celebrate local food For the past two years, Farm to Fork was a banquet held at organizer Kelly Hodgins’ parents’ Paradise Valley farm to promote local food producers and help provide food security for local charity groups. To date, more than 100 diners have enjoyed multi-course meals cooked by area chefs using only ingredients from within 50 miles of Powell River. “I didn’t even know that within our 50-mile diet we’ve got gin from a distillery in Comox, we’ve got sturgeon caviar and smoked steelhead,” says Hodgins, who grew up in Powell River and recently finished a masters degree in food security at University of Guelph. Last year’s banquet included hors d’oeuvres by Jacqueline Huddleston of Ecossentials, an appetizer by Kelly Belanger of Edie Ray’s Café, a main course by Roy Blackwell of the Boardwalk Restaurant and dessert by Mackenzie Adamson of SassyMacks Ice Cream. “The community response is tremendous and everyone gets involved in some way,” says Hodgins, “whether it’s farmers donating ingredients or chefs donating their talent and time.” Hodgins, currently working for the Feeding Nine Billion Project in Ontario, a food-security project in which students and academics work together to produce food-security solutions, says local volunteers Megan Cole and Rob Gilchrist helped organize the event last year. Hodgins says the 2015 edition was the last Farm to Fork she will be involved with, due to difficulties coordinating the event from afar, but Gilchrist will continue the event in some capacity for 2016. “This is not just a celebratory dinner,” says Hodgins. “I wanted to make sure that we weren’t just celebrating farmers and the noble and important work they do, but also raising awareness and a conversation about food insecurity realities.” The 2015 dinner sold out in five days and ticket holders enjoyed live music and drink pairings donated by Townsite Brewing and Courtenay’s Beaufort Vineyard and Estate Winery on the Hodgins’ farm. The 2014 event raised roughly $3,000 toward a nutrition-coupon program that helps low-income seniors in Powell River purchase local, fresh food from the Powell River Farmers’ Market, says Hodgins. Last year’s proceeds went toward the program as well, she says. For more about this year’s event, email Gilchrist at robgilchrist1@hotmail.com.

DINE Powell River recently celebrated its first ever Dine Powell River event, with 14 participating restaurants offering specialized dishes for the occasion. The mouth-watering menus during the 10-day long event, which was sponsored by Powell River Peak, were something to behold. Each participating restaurant stepped up and had its chefs create dishes to tantalize the taste buds and diners embraced the idea, some trying out several restaurants during the event. Dine Powell River is an indication of the rising amount of amazing food choices the city has, and plans are in the works for an even bigger event next year. In the meantime, flip to the following two pages for a guide to some of Powell River's eateries. Rest assured, there is something for every pallet.

BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL
Blackberries have been enjoyed for thousands of years. But in Powell River, they are celebrated like nowhere else in the world. Blackberry vines of various wild and cultivated varieties grow in many temperate regions of the world including Chile, New Zealand, Europe and here in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The climate and growing conditiowwns on the Sunshine Coast are perfect for the blackberry, and it thrives here in sometimes overwhelming abundance. Blackberries’ natural best is by the end of August, and that’s when Powell River holds its annual Blackberry Festival. The week-long celebrations include a number of community events such as a studio art tour on Saturday, August 20, and Sunday, August 21, and a blackberry high tea at the Old Courthouse Inn on Wednesday, August 17, with 1 pm and 3 pm seatings. At the Open Air Farmers' Market at Paradise Valley Exhibition Grounds the blackberry theme continues with wonderful blackberry treats. Blackberry Festival street party marks the end of the week of celebrations. 2016 marks its 33rd year. Marine Avenue is closed off for the evening as thousands of people make their way through an evening of open-air partying. The street is filled with music, fun and fabulous food, with blackberry specialties to enjoy. Merchants set up small stalls along the sidewalks, musicians find a spot, and the entire avenue fills to the brim with people. Wander the street and take in all the fun. The festival takes place August 13-21.
SUNSHINE MUSIC FESTIVAL
Prior to every Labour Day Weekend for the past 30 years, a giant tent rises from the ground at Palm Beach Park. A stage is erected, food and craft booths are set up and then the people arrive. They are fans of eclectic music, socializing and tasty morsels that are prepared for them. Music is the biggest draw for the annual rite of passage that means summer is drawing to a close. It’s a time for people to enjoy the laid-back days before busy schedules take over. Deliberately kept small with reasonable ticket prices, the family-friendly festival attracts more than 200 applications from performers. The musical lineup is a balance that keeps people coming back year after year. The festival takes place September 2-4.
PRISMA
Symphony musicians from around the world attend Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA). Two major concerts, and a third one held outdoors on Willingdon Beach named A Celebration of the Senses, highlight this annual event. The public is also invited to attend master classes given by musicians from some of the world’s top orchestras. The festival takes place June 13-25.
