FAMILY ENDEAVOUR: Tod English, above, and his wife Lisa are owners of The Properties at Myrtle Creek, a subdivision of one-acre plus lots south of the city boundaries. They have built a spec home, which is nearing completion, to show the style of houses that will be erected on more than 30 lots. JOYCE CARLSON PHOTO

When Tod and Lisa English moved a house off a waterfront lot, where they were planning to build a new home, it was transported to a property south of town. Nearby there was acreage for sale and they wondered why no one was buying it. The 74-acre property was located adjacent to Southill Acres. The couple, both born and raised in Powell River, answered the question themselves and purchased the property. As new owners, they named the area The Properties at Myrtle Creek, and developed 30 one-acre-plus lots and left a 30-acre piece intact at the rear. “It’s a family affair,” says Tod. “Our daughters even have been helping to trim back the weeds in

front of the lots.” Five lots have been sold and four houses are in various stages of completion. Former Powell River resident Richard Berry and his wife Karen are planning to build on their lot in the spring. She has retired from a career as a public health nurse and he is wrapping up a teaching career as an industrial education instructor. “Richard told me that after graduation, he couldn’t wait to get out of Powell River,” says Tod. “Now he and his wife are eager to retire here.”

Tod explains the impact of one other person moving to the properties, who was soon followed to Powell River by his best friend and daughter. “That’s a trend that’s starting to develop as people discover what we have here.” Interest in the properties is growing, according to Tod, and once half a dozen or more homes are occupied, he predicts the rest of the lots will move more quickly. He and Lisa decided to build a home to sell, which is nearing completion. “This way we can show people the type of home, with steep roof lines, that will be built here.” »B4

ROOF STYLE: Steep roof lines are a feature of the nearly completed home at The Properties at Myrtle Creek. Similar lines will be part of all the houses built in the subdivision that currently has four homes in different phases of conpletion. JOYCE CARLSON PHOTO

Kinley Construction is the main contractor for the Craftsman-style home. It has 1,750 square feet on the main floor with an open kitchen and living room along with a separate dining room, library and laundry room next to the three-bay garage. All the cabinetry was manufactured locally. Specially ordered carriage-style doors feature large windows so the 1,000-square-foot area has plenty of light. The three doors were custom painted with a black finish to match the exterior trim colours. A wrap-around deck facing southeast off the dining room has two covered areas and includes fittings for a gas outdoor fireplace. An open staircase with landing leads to the second floor. A master bedroom with luxurious ensuite, a second full bathroom and two bedrooms are included in the 1,100 square feet area. “The master ensuite is spacious with a soaker tub, walk-in shower with glass doors and a semi-private toilet,” Tod explains during a tour. A self-contained suite on the lower level is ready for completion by the purchasers as well as a bedroom, bathroom and family room for the main residents. The plan called for more concrete walls in the lower level, Tod explains, “but with the lay of the land, we put in more doors and

lems with matching,” Tod explains. Travertine belongs to the larger family of stone called limestone also known as calcium carbonate. It is formed by minerals dissolving in groundwater and then being deposited on the earth’s surface by rivers, natural springs or geysers. The tiles come in many different colours including ivory, beige, walnut, noce and gold, which are the result of iron compounds or other organic impurities. For the exterior of the home, Modern Windows and Siding supplied gutters and railings along with all the windows. Granite on the front of the house came from Hardy Island and was hand-split before being put in place. Trees from the property were sent to Lois Lumber and milled wood came back in the form of outside trim. While the fir used for bracing also came from the local lumber mill, it did not originate on the property. Large boulders make a dramatic style statement in the landscaping that includes hydro-seeded grass areas. Once the current house is sold, Tod and Lisa are considering another one on an adjacent lot. Because of the tree covenant, included in the subdivision bylaws, all the homes will be placed so privacy is upheld by positioning of neighbouring houses. “When you look out the windows, you feel like you’re in the middle of a forest,” says Tod. He and Lisa want to see Powell River remain a vibrant community and are committed to investing in its future.

Cranberry home renovations feature in-town supplies Every floor has a view of Powell Lake DEVON HANLEY Peak Contributor

NEARING COMPLETION: An 80-year-old house on Mowat Avenue in Cranberry has been completely transformed as a result of the imagination of its owner Denis St-Pierre. He moved to Powell River six years ago and planned to build a new home. Instead he succumbed to lake views and last year went the renovation route instead. DEVON HANLEY PHOTO

It was a family vacation to visit the place ‘at the end of the road’ that interested Denis St-Pierre in leaving behind 13 years of construction work in Calgary and moving to Powell River in 2005. At first Denis dreamed of finding a piece of land north of town and building, but with a teenage son, reality set in and before long he had purchased an 80-year-old house on Mowat Avenue. “I knew as soon as I walked into the house and saw the view of Powell Lake that it was the house for me,” says Denis. A drywaller with some development and building experience, he began to imagine how the house could be renovated to increase living space and maxi-

mize the magnificent view up Powell Lake. Finally, in 2010, Denis was ready to realize his dreams. He teamed up with local timber framer/ carpenter Carsten Huber, and a local designer. Together they came up with a timberframe design that would see the house raised two feet to create 900 square feet of living space on the ground floor, reconfiguration of the 900-square-foot main floor, and the addition of a 550-square-foot master bedroom loft with a walk-in closet and desk nook. “Because of the slope of the lot, every floor has a lake view,” says Denis. “This made lifting the house and finishing the ground floor totally worth it.”

He commenced with a partial demolition, then made arrangements to raise the house. Carsten began sourcing materials from local sawmill owner/operators and preparing timbers for the new roof. Nearly all the wood used for the project came from local sources, some of it old-growth cedar from logging leftovers. The rafters, posts, beams and joists are all made from local fir and hemlock, while the loft floor is made up of tongue-and-groove spruce. Carsten says, “with timber frame, the structural elements become the aesthetic of the house.” That would certainly include the massive 320-kilogram (660-pound) centre beam that was put into place with assistance »B8

wood-burning stove, a large laundry room, bedroom and a bathroom. From the open main floor living area, one looks up to a magnificent cathedral ceiling. Walls were moved to create a partially open computer galley, a bedroom and a stunning feature bathroom, and a French door was added for easy access to the new wrap-around deck. The master bedroom loft feels almost like a tree house with views of the hills and mountains surrounding Mowat Bay through a magnificent six-by-12-foot arched window. Denis hired a local tile setter to create something highly artistic and different for the home’s two bathrooms. The main floor bathroom has the feel of an ancient ruin complete with an intricately carved leaf and vine design cut out of the natural slate, while the ground floor bathroom feels more like a grotto, earthbound and natural. To achieve this effect, a dynamic nature theme was created using hand-picked rock from local beaches. Another key design element is the three-storey open staircase, which Denis requested Carsten to design. It is a statement of fine woodworking craftsmanship featuring character oak (from a gnarled old oak tree removed from Denis’ front yard), fir, yel-

Making a major change to the landscape of a property takes a great deal of courage, as Carmen Brown found out when she decided to go ahead with a groundbreaking project. Carmen purchased a waterfront home on Willingdon Avenue in 2005. As is the case with many homes in the area, the front of the property had a steep slope, thick with blackberries and other brambles, and a narrow goat trail down to a rocky shoreline. six years was realized in 2011 when she contracted with Brent McClinchy and Mycro-Works Trucking and Excavating to give her property a facelift. “I’d had a few people look at the property before, but none of them came up with what I really wanted,” she says. “I phoned Brent and he could tell me what my vision was. He could explain how it was going to work, he

could explain to me what I had already in my head. So I thought ‘this is good, let’s go ahead with it.’” Originally, Carmen had some pictures drawn up by an engineer friend, who had used straight walls and stairs. “I asked, why can’t we build it with ramps so she could still get a wheelbarrow up, and curved rather than straight walls?” recalls Brent.

From the initial discussion in February through to the end of April, Brent and his crew changed an unusable slope, that was sloughing, into 3,000 square feet of stable gardening space. Carmen is self-employed and works from home providing business services to independent BC fallers. For a couple of months her view of the ocean became a view of a pile of dirt, and her of»B12

contemplating taking on a large garden project. “If it is a passion, something you feel you really want to have, you should do it because how long are you going to live? If it is going to improve how you use the yard, do it. You also have to realize that it isn’t going to be perfect

Gardening in Taking the chill colder months out of winter

Weather dictates what survives the winter JANET SOUTHCOTT copyeditor@prpeak.com

There’s nothing like gardening in summertime, with long bright days, the sun’s heat on a bent back and warm, dry soil. Weeds are easy to pull, grass doesn’t grow as quickly, and neighbourhood conversations take place. With fall, many people prefer to stay indoors, but gardening can still be enjoyable. The lawn has a quick growing spree after each shower of rain, summer crops die down, and time to garden relates directly with the weather forecast. Gardeners cast their thoughts toward preparing for the winter and colour for the spring. Bulbs can be planted at this time of year. Snowdrops, daffodils, crocuses, tulips, winter blooming pansies and early flowering forget-me-nots all make a lovely show. Bulbs can be planted anywhere in the garden or in containers, and make especially nice displays under deciduous trees and shrubs. If planted together they give each other support and provide an intense blast of colour.

Vegetable gardens do not need to sit empty throughout fall and winter months. Many gardeners keep growing food all year, choosing to plant kale, spinach, Swiss chard, turnips, broad beans, purple-sprouting broccoli, garlic and onions in late summer and into the fall. Choice just comes down to which vegetables will grow and mature in cool weather. “Generally speaking, the plants for the best winter gardens must be started in June and July for things like purple-sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts, et cetera,” says Gary and Ellen de Casmaker of Eternal Seed. “But, do not despair, there is still time to sow winter lettuce, spinach, cilantro, corn salad and arugula seed.” Gary and Ellen suggest October planting for garlic and broad beans to harvest next July. Storm season can bring in bucket-loads of seaweed that adds nutrients when spread upon any garden bed. Layering a bed with newspaper, seaweed, fallen leaves such as maples, compost and top soil can create a hotbed of useable soil for the spring. Preparing the lawn for winter can involve fertilizing, aeration, dethatching, seeding and edging. Edging is important if a gardener wishes to avoid damaging overhanging turf when shoveling snow.

tems. Decomposing leaves also provide food for soil insects, including earthworms. Burlap, bamboo or cedar stakes, a large bag, some string and dry straw is all that’s needed to protect tender plants already in the ground, according to GardenWorks.ca. The stakes can be placed around the plant in a type of tripod and secured at the top with string. Straw is placed around the base of the plant to insulate the root structure. At least three layers of burlap are then wrapped

The jury is out about whether to leave leaves on the lawn or rake them up. Leaves can be added to compost to make a good mulch, which speaks to raking them up, but also if the lawn is not completely covered, leaves can be left to provide fertilization to the lawn. They are also great bedding material for animals looking to hunker down over the colder months. Shredded leaves placed around the base of shrubs and trees can help insulate and nourish the root sys-

around the frame and secured with string. The plastic bag is pulled over the top like a rain hat, and draped until about 30 per cent of the burlap is covered. This will protect the growing tip from cold and wet weather. The arrival of cooler weather is also a great time to work on garden projects. If the look for the garden needs to change, it is a good time to plant shrubs and trees. The still warm soil and regular rainfall will help stimulate rapid root growth. New planting beds can also be dug and soil quality enhanced. Use of cold frames or greenhouses can help start seedlings and protect them from cold and wet weather. Even an old glass window will work if placed at an angle against a wall. Cold frames and straw or leaves can also help container plants withstand the older months. Even with the best intentions, gardeners know they may lose a few plants over the winter. To some, this is just the pleasure of gardening, seeing what survived when the frost melts and spring flowers start to bloom.
