Coming forward about sexual assault is never easy for the victim. It is a difficult conversation to have with doctors, police, prosecutors, the courts and support workers who may not be strangers because of the community dynamics of a small town.

In 2016, 21 sexual offences have been reported to Powell River RCMP, according to staff sergeant Rod Wiebe, who said that charges were laid in four of the cases, with the last reported sex offence on September 27.

App Store or iTunes In 2016, BC Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General expanded its #SaySomething social media campaign to help end the silence about sexual assault and encourage more people to speak up, become aware and learn safe ways to help or offer support to someone who has experienced sexual violence.

Police and prosecutors point out that a whole range of events are classified as sexual assault under the Criminal Code of Canada and involve assaults committed in circumstances of a sexual nature, such that the sexual integrity of the victim is violated.

When a sexual assault victim comes forward, initial crisis response begins immediately after the incident or if the victim decides to report the incident to police. If circumstances warrant, the case can be taken up by Police Based Victim Services, coordinated by Christine Schreiber.

The Specialized Victim Support Services program, coordinated by Pat Parsley, is another option for victims who may, for whatever reason, choose to not go through the RCMP. “The Specialized Victim Support Services is the program people can access, either by referral or directly, and they do not have to go through the RCMP,” said Powell River Community Services Association executive director Julie Chambers.

“Victims have a right to decide how to proceed. They need to have options and make their own choices.”

community members who have been victims of crime.

Police Based Victim Services include crisis intervention support, emotional support and information about a victim’s specific case, including police file and court file updates.

Practical assistance includes safety planning, completing victim impact statements, applying for the Crime Victim Assistance Program, orientation to the criminal justice system and witness preparation.

Victims can be accompanied to meetings with police, Crown counsel or to court.

Referrals are made to appropriate community agencies, such as counselling.

In cases dealing specifically with domestic violence and sexual assault, victim support services are with the client for the initial 72 hours of crisis intervention, then they are referred to long-term support.

Specialized victim support services are free and confidential for victims of spousal or sexual assault, criminal harassment or stalking, and for children who have been sexually abused.

Assault victims are advised to go to a hospital, walk-in clinic, or doctor for

a medical examination and treatment as soon as possible after a sexual assault.

Forensic evidence collection is done through the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) at Powell River General Hospital.

According to Anna Marie D’Angelo, senior media relations officer for Vancouver Coastal Health, SART has been available in Powell River for 15 years but has not been used often.

In cases of sexual assault in the school system, School District 47 reports to the RCMP, which will take over those cases.

According to Jay Yule, who has been superintendent of schools for 17 years, he can recall only a few times when a sexual assault has had to be dealt with.

“I really can only think of two or three in the whole time I’ve been here,” said Yule. “That’s not to say there’s things that happen outside of school. It’s determined by the police, whether to let us know or not. Depending on who the person is and whether they’re in school or out of school, whether one or both are in or out of school, can determine if we’re informed or not.”

Yule said he can recall one report of inappropriate grabbing that was non-con-

sensual and was dealt with through the school’s antiviolence protocol.

“We’ve made great strides in reporting and talking to, especially, young students, about helping them frame what’s appropriate touching and non-appropriate touching,” he said. “We’ve come a long way in educating and preventing.”

According to Brooks Secondary School counsellor Allison Burt, starting from elementary school, a comprehensive curriculum through physical and health education includes components about healthy relationships, safety and issues around consent.

“I’m really proud that our curriculum actually addresses that,” she said.

A cco rd i n g to C a r r i e Chassels, Vancouver Island University student affairs executive director, sexual assault on campus is dealt with under the university longstanding student conduct code, but often still goes unreported.

“There is concern for feeling ashamed,” said Chassels.

“It is a case where people felt it wasn’t a university matter. Being embarrassed to disclose to somebody that this happened to them, it is not easy for people to talk about.”

$1,000 and levied a $300 victim surcharge for one count of the impaired driving charge, care or control of vehicle while impaired.

Lu owns Vancouver-based Eton College. Eton and Vancouver Island University have been working on developing various educational partnership programs. It is unknown at this time what Lu’s plans are for the building.

Leishman said the society is in the process of drawing plans for a new facility that could include up to 30 units of one- and two-bedroom housing.

“We haven’t secured a property yet, but that’s what we’re working on,” she

said. “It will be in the same model as what we’ve done because they’ve been very successful.”

Craig said the new building will operate similar to the society’s other buildings, Leishman Lodge, built in 2008, and McGregor Place, built in 2000.

Single bedroom units are priced about $100 below market value and the twobedrooms units are priced at market value. That allows the more expensive units to subsidize the less-expensive ones, including the 12 single-room units in Centennial Homes, said Craig.

Centennial Homes is located across Westview Avenue from McGregor Place. Craig said those units rent for $300 per month.

When the new building is complete, said Leishman, Centennial residents will be first in line for a new apartment.

Dog park opens City of Powell River’s official dog park opened earlier this month in Westview.

The fenced, off-leash area in Westview, located on city-owned property near the former Max Cameron Secondary School, opened Saturday, October 15.

“We’re opening up this one and looking at closing the one in Townsite,” said city director of parks, recreation and culture Ray Boogaards. The park includes standard features such as grass, trees and picnic tables, but also ones specific to an off-leash facility, including posted rules for usage, separated areas for large and small dogs and a fire hydrantshaped water fountain for owners and their pets.

The area for large dogs is currently open, but the city is holding off opening the other section until the grass takes better, said Boogaards. An official opening for the park is expected in the spring. The city is looking to keep the current Townsite dog park at Henderson Park open for the next year and is encouraging residents who take their dogs for walks in all city parks to try the new facility.

Lockout continues A labour standoff between Texada Island quarry workers and Lafarge Canada continues. Texada Quarrying general manager Andre Balfe said that since the company took steps to lock the workers out there has not been any move to resume contract negotiations. United Steelworkers Local 816 was locked out after its membership voted to reject a potential contract and issued strike notice. Lafarge is seeking a contract that provides it with more worker flexibility, while the union is not willing to give up seniority rights.

Proceeds from the sale of Powell River Sunset Homes Society ’s former Olive Devaud Residence will go into the construction of at least 24 new units of affordable seniors’ housing in the city, said society president Myrna Leishman.

The non-profit organization constructed the building in 1966 with the help of funding and donated land from Olive Devaud, a longtime resident who died in 1969. With her donation, Devaud requested that the society provide affordable housing for seniors.

Leishman, who has been volunteering with Sunset Homes for at least the past 25 years, said the building started out as a boarding house but shifted to offer more assisted care as its residents aged. The regional health authority took over its operation as a care facility and added capacity later to care for people living with dementia.

After Vancouver Coastal Health returned the building in 2014, the society looked at various renovating options to provide housing, but the costs were prohibitive, said Leishman.

“We all loved the building and stuck up for it, but we had to face reality,” she said.

“The society just couldn’t afford it.”

Leishman said the sale of the building will allow the society to continue with its mandate to provide affordable housing for seniors.

In a question and answer period, Horgan said he expects the issues of pipelines and liquefied natural gas to be brought up specifically because it puts the NDP in a position where the party looks like it is against creating jobs.

“This has nothing to do with the economics, nothing to do with climate change or the real world that the economy is operating in; it’s all about the ability of the Liberals to spin a positive message about something that’s not even happening,” he said. “That’s tough for me.”

Horgan said the NDP will campaign on the platform that these projects are bad politics, bad policy and not good for businesses or families.

Speaking about local issues, Horgan said an NDP government would revisit the legislation that created BC Ferries as a public-private corporation and look to bring it back under the direction of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure or at other options.

BC’s provincial election is more than six months away, but the unofficial campaign is well underway with parties holding fundraisers, nominating candidates and rolling out early platforms.

New Democratic Party leader John Horgan spoke to supporters at a recent breakfast meet and greet at Magpie’s Diner in Powell River on Monday, October 17.

More than 20 people, including City of Powell River mayor Dave Formosa and councillors Karen Skadsheim, Rob Southcott, Maggie Hathaway and CaroleAnn Leishman, attended.

Horgan said the next election will be won by emphasizing values over issues.

“BC is filled with New Democrats, they just don’t know it,” said Horgan. “The values we share are quintessentially mainstream values, not marginal ones.”

Horgan said the party will have a more successful campaign if it can tap into people’s desire for change and not become divided on issues.

“As important as issues are,” said Horgan, “let’s focus on what brings us all together. If we start from there we can do anything.”

In visits to communities throughout the province, Horgan said he is hearing that there is a “genuine desire for change,” but his party faces challenges breaking through in several resourcebased towns in BC’s interior, such as Kamloops, Quesnel and Cranbrook.

“These places have historically voted NDP, but have not done so for a couple decades,” said Horgan. “This is largely because of the mythology the BC Liberals have created around what the NDP will and can do in government.”

Horgan said the challenge is “to turn that talk around and not dwell on the past.”

He said he is proud of his party’s past record and that there are several initiatives, such as the formation of the Agricultural Land Reserve, establishment of the BC Ambulance Service and Columbia Basin Trust, that he makes a point to remind

BC New Democratic Party (NDP) is first out of the gate to nominate its candidate for Powell River-Sunshine Coast in the provincial election next spring.

Incumbent candidate Nicholas Simons launched his re-election campaign Saturday, October 22, after being acclaimed the NDP’s candidate for the riding during what the party described as a “lively” nomination meeting.

A three-term MLA, Simons was first elected in 2005, then re-elected in 2009 and 2013. Powell River-Sunshine Coast NDP riding association president Bill Forst said Simons continues to have a strong base of support within the riding’s electorate.

“We’re pretty confident that he’s as well

liked and respected now as he was 12 years ago when he was first elected,” said Forst.

Both the BC Green Party and BC Liberal Party have yet to hold nomination selection meetings, but are expected to do so soon.

Powell River-Sunshine Coast BC Liberal riding association president Robert Cannon-Brown said that after proceeding through the party’s candidate-vetting process, only Matthew Wilson, son of former MLA Gordon Wilson, remains as a potential candidate.

Cannon-Brown said he expects the riding association to acclaim Wilson at its candidate selection meeting on Saturday, November 12, in Davis Bay. Although the Greens do not have a riding association on the Sunshine Coast, nomination candidate Kim Darwin said the closing date for potential candidates to put their names forward on the Green ticket is Thursday, October 27. She said the party will select a candidate shortly thereafter.

Darwin, who lives on the Lower Coast, has served as party secretary since 2014.

Smid said the grove, which he and his neighbours refer to as Century Grove, is reminiscent of Vancouver Island’s Cathedral Grove, and one of the reasons he decided to live in Stillwater.

Despite not being old growth, the trees are quite beautiful, said Smid.

“Over the years, as I’ve talked to residents and neighbours, I’ve learned that people were feeling the same way about those trees,” he said.

Smid said the grove will act as a legacy reminder of the people who lived in the area 100 years ago.

“That grove,” he said, “will only increase in beauty over the years.”

Stillwater residents are celebrating a small victory after Island Timberlands decided to save a grove of secondgrowth trees on Roberts Road.

After several local residents called the forestry company to share concerns about the grove being cut, the company has changed its plans, according to Makenzie Leine, community relations for Island Timberlands “We received some feedback from the community, so we made some alterations to our plans that balanced community concerns with managing our forest,” said Leine.

Part of the grove is located on Island Timberlands’ private managed forest land, so when the community learned the company was planning to log in the area, a number of residents contacted the company with their concerns.

Stillwater resident Rod Smid, a Canadian landscape photographer who moved from Ontario several years ago, said he thinks Island Timberlands changed its plans after receiving so much feedback from the community.

He added that not only did the company change plans, representatives also came to the site to meet the neighbours and see firsthand what was being saved.

“The grove is unique in the way that the road meanders through it,” said Smid. “If they had cut those trees, the integrity of the grove would be gone.”

Leine said Island Timberlands is interested in working toward positive engagement with its neighbours and this was an opportunity to do so.

Devaud’s legacy The news of the former Olive Devaud Residence being sold to Chinese businessperson Shih-tao Lu’s Starium Development is sure to raise some eyebrows, but the most important thing to remember is it will result in more seniors’ housing, which was Olive Devaud’s original vision.

Devaud and her husband Alphonse donated practically everything they owned to Powell River, a town she fell in love with after moving here in 1926 to work at the hospital.

In particular, after Alphonse’s death in 1954, she gifted a 10-acre section of land in Westview with the intent of it being a hospital, six acres of which became the Olive Devaud Residence in 1966. She also contributed thousands of dollars in cash toward the building as it was being established.

Now, for the first time in 50 years, the property at the corner of Westview Avenue and Kemano Street will not be used for seniors’ housing. However, the more than $1 million generated from the sale will be.

A partnership in association with Housing Hope, a program of Powell River Education Services Society, to temporarily house people at risk for homelessness was stopped in its tracks in January when neighbours raised concerns about how the project would affect their property values, community members pointed out that the society was veering from its seniors’ housing mandate and the city made onerous requirements to bring the building back to code.

The sale allows Sunset Homes to get back to its mandate of helping seniors in a brand new building, instead of dealing with an old structure that is no longer suitable, and having to navigate so much bureaucracy.

Whatever Lu decides to do with the former Olive Devaud Residence, and the most obvious scenario is it will be used for dormitories for international students attending his proposed international schools, it will not house seniors any longer.

Can we move on and focus on Sunset Homes’ next project, which will help seniors?

But the real problem is with the provincial government and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), who are enablers of corporations

such as Sodexo. With an election just months away, there is an opportunity to demand a change from all the political parties. In the meantime, residents of Powell River should demand better.

Sodexo is apparently in damage-

control mode and several people close to the situation say the food has improved. But for how long?

A serious barrier to seeking permanent improvements is the passivity of VCH, whose response so far seems aimed at excusing

Sodexo. While the current contract is not public, VCH previously reserved the right to cancel contracts as well as “test the market” to see if another corporation could provide better “value.”

Why is VCH not using its pow-

ers? You can ask them. By pure coincidence, the VCH board is in Powell River to conduct an open forum from 5-6:30 pm on Thursday, October 27, at Town Centre Hotel.

COUNCIL BRIEFS Powell River Community Forest board is recommending that City of Powell River council approve 12 project grants totalling close to $529,000. Council approved just under $900,000 for projects last spring. If the current project grants are approved on Thursday, November 3, the two largest grants will go to Inclusion Powell River ($143,016) for renovations at Jean Pike Centre to upgrade its community theatre facility, and the city’s parks, recreation and culture department ($105,895) to replace Dwight Hall’s original wooden floor. Powell River Climbing Co-op, which already received $167,000 last April to build an indoor climbing wall in Townsite, is slated to receive another $46,000 to cover additional building costs. Other grants expected to be approved include $40,000 for Powell River Historical Museum and Archives’ Anderson sawmill display; $20,000 for Marine Area Business Association’s town clock project; $19,373 for Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy

Approves farm incubator application City council approved a staff request to apply to the BC Rural Dividends Program for funding development of an incubator farm project. Council voted unanimously at the meeting on Thursday, October 20, to support an application for a planning grant for the development of a teaching

farm and business development project, now being called the New Ground Farm Enterprise Incubator. The $100,000-grant, 80 per cent of the anticipated cost, will go toward the project’s planning stages, said city economic development manager Scott Randolph. The remaining $20,000 will come from the city’s economic development budget. Further grants will be sought for the actual construction later in the project. After considering two other locations this summer, Randolph confirmed that the best location for the facility is between the proposed Sino Bright

international school and Millennium Park.

Endorses disaster assessment At its October 20 meeting, council also voted unanimously to endorse an application from the Powell River Reg ional Emergency Program to Emergency Management BC for National Disaster Mitigation Program funding. If accepted, the grant will go toward creating a comprehensive regional risk assessment to identify flood hazards from rising sea levels and increased storm

surge events, potential impacts, community and infrastructure vulnerabilities and provide an overall flood-risk profile.

Approves rent reductions City tenants above the city-owned location of the new Powell River Public Library location will receive a further 25 per cent rent

reduction. Several tenants of the building have told the city that current work and removal of the staircase to the second floor has hurt their businesses. Tenants had already been given a 25 per cent decrease, though delays in the library’s development have added length to the transition period. The added discount will run from now to the proposed end of the project next spring.

Scary time is coming soon to Powell River. In a town that has more than its fair share of haunts, horrors and hilarity taking place on All Hallows’ Eve, by reputation, the best heebie-jeebies are found in the terrifying hallways at Henderson Haunted House in Townsite.

According to organizer Darren Nivens, great pride is taken in frightening the bejesus out of people.

Nivens, one of three boo-masters, said when he and co-organizers Tracy Pinewski and Amber Hodgins took on creating the house, their goal was to make a haunted setting and creepy characters throughout in order to spook people into screaming.

“We don’t play around; it’s not for the squeamish,” said Nivens. “We take a lot of pride in it.”

The haunted house was started about 14 years ago

by two moms to raise funds for Henderson Elementary School.

“It started with Deb Patterson and I,” said Dale Lawson, one of the original creators. “The very first one was desks piled on top of each other and there were garbage bags taped together to make these long, dark corridors and hallways.”

According to Nivens, the ghoul squad now in charge of the creepy crawlies started planning this year’s theme in May. “Most of the actual work won’t start until September and then it’s hands-on building and creating props and gimmicks,” he said.

Nivens said they have a different theme every year and include creepy characters that leave a lasting impression. He said many people who entered the haunted house a few years ago still talk about the fright they received from one character in particular.

“People still talk about the

Easter Bunny character that left a very lasting impact,” he said. “Some people won’t come back because of that.”

That was the year of the bunny. A previous year featured classic fairy tales and another honoured classic horror movies. The terrifying trio’s goal is to outdo what was done the previous year.

“This year we’re doing an amusement park, freakshow circus,” said Nivens, adding that people should watch out for the clown riding around on a unicycle.

Former Brooks Secondary School student Megan Mitchell is back this year to apply her special effects makeup skills to various characters. She spent a year of intensive studies at Vancouver Film School.

“There’s going to be animal people and the usual blood and gore,” said Mitchell, who said she loves to make monsters and creatures. “A lot of makeup artists either love the beauty or they’re full

on into Halloween and the scary, spooky things.”

According to Nivens, many Powell River residents think that because the event is staged at an elementary school, it’s something for

little kids, but he said it is more suitable for teenagers and adults.

Nivens said he is involved not so much to terrorize, but to leave people laughing from the horrors they survive.

“They might be scared at the end, but they’re still laughing and smiling and thanking us for doing it,” he said. “It all comes down to what their expectations are and those are high.”

Haunted Ball returns Presented by Powell River arts collective the Vale Society, the Haunted Ball returns to Dwight Hall for a fourth year on Saturday, October 29.

According to the cocreators Autumn Skye Morrison and Blake Drezet, their reasons for presenting the masquerade ball come from childhood disappointment, which, in itself, is an ominous beginning for a Halloween tale.

“Growing up in Calgary, I became so excited about it because of the atmosphere and mystery around it,” said Drezet. “I would spend all of this time on my costume, dress up and go looking for some party.”

Drezet said he had many disappointing Halloweens drifting the suburban streets.

“I’ve long wanted to create the Halloween party of my dreams and something that really rose to the occasion I thought Halloween could be for people,” he said.

For Morrison, who was born and raised in Powell River, she said there was never much going on for Halloween other than a few high school parties. Drezet said he and Morrison consider Halloween one of their favourite holidays.

“We both really love Halloween,” he said. “We love dressing up and Halloween has always been a favourite.”

Now, the Haunted Ball gives them the opportunity to create atmospheres of other worlds; some playful, some contemplative and some spooky. Morrison describes the mood of the night as magical.

A haunted ball is a mainstay of Halloween. In movies, it is celebrated in malevolent masterpieces such as the original Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney.

Masquerade balls are usually ghostly rather than fullon gore, creepy and spooky more than frightful.

According to Morrison, the Haunted Ball is not meant to scare, but rather to create mystical moods.

“I usually shy away from the horror side of Halloween and go more for the mysterious, magical, playful and a little bit retro,” said Morrison. “Fantasy is more our interest.”

As for the theme of this year’s Haunted Ball, Drezet said he doesn’t want to give too much away.

“We’re sort of gearing more toward the medieval, gothic quality,” he said. “Last year was a bit more witches and stuff.”

Installations, some of which are “castle-esque,” said Drezet, create a haunting atmosphere for people who attend the ball.

“We create these atmospheres that you walk into and it feels like you’ve stepped into another world,” said Morrison. “There many different little aspects that are different worlds.”

October is Fire Prevention Month. With the changing seasons and Halloween upon us, it is especially important to be aware of fire hazards during the festive season, such as chimneys that have been dormant throughout the summer and the prevalence of fireworks.

This month is a perfect chance to highlight some of the auxiliary firefighters at Powell River Fire Rescue who, along with other city and Powell River Regional District firefighters, work tirelessly year-round to protect us from fires and respond to emergencies.

The firefighters pictured here, along with members of Malaspina and Van Anda fire departments, are also part of a group involved in an online Movember campaign. This year they are joined by Catalyst Paper Corporation’s emergency response team. They are raising money next month at moteam.co/ powell-river-and-area-emergencyservices for prostate cancer prevention and mental wellness/suicide prevention.

In addition to the online fundraising campaign, the firefighters will be selling calendars with their photos in them, which are available for $10 at the Peak office as of November 7.

“They’re burning out locations in Vancouver, so having that production in Powell River was important because we were able to see how some of those locations could be used,” said Tony Papa, who founded Powell River Digital Film School and worked as digital-imaging technician.

Four of Papa’s students were hired for the shoot and gained valuable experience, including Ben Kyle as second camera assistant, Tiffany Smith and Jazz Rico in the art department and Will Walden shooting some footage for the electronic press kit.

According to Bekerman, the two things that matter for a crew are expertise and a sense of personal investment in the project.

“Even though some people didn’t have tons of experience, they had a passion for the project and they were willing to learn, to me that counts for so much,” he said. “The fact that people cared about the project,

Production on the feature film Kayaking for Beginners recently wrapped in the Powell River region. A 22day shoot included filming in locations around Lund, Gibsons Beach, Tla’amin Nation, Copeland Islands, Port McNeill and Telegraph Cove on Vancouver Island, Bella Bella and Klemtu.

Producer Daniel Bekerman said budgets are not divulged because it could affect distribution, however, he said it was not a highbudget film. The movie still cycled money back into the local economy though.

“Most of the budget was devoted to hotels, transportation, food, caterers and all those types of things,” said Bekerman. “Where a normal production might spend 30 per cent of its budget on things like that, we probably spent 80 per cent.”

The expense was due, in part, to the difficult logistics of the production, including locations and much of the movie taking place on water.

“First of all, we needed to find people who had adequate boats that could support us, both from a camera point of view and from a support point of view,” he said. “For a low-budget movie, the logistics were very complicated.”

According to people within Powell River’s local film industry, having Kayaking for Beginners was important to laying groundwork for future productions.

According to Papa, that sense was felt throughout the entire production, including local services such as catering and boat charters.

Lund Hotel was full for at least two weeks and restaurants were busy, particularly in Lund, he said.

Papa said when it comes to feature film productions, Powell River would benefit by having its own film commissioner. Currently, generating interest in filming in the area is handled by the Vancouver Island North Film Commission.

However, despite all of the positive benefits for business in the community, outside film productions coming to Powell River face the same obstacles as everyone else coming to the region: ferries.

“Some productions may view the fact that you have to take two ferries, but for the right kind of production, it’s an excellent place to film,” said Bekerman.

The right kinds of production, he added, are smaller ones.

“If you have a ton of equipment, trucks and gear, it’s going to become logistically that much more cumbersome to bring everything,” said Bekerman.

Punk pioneers come to town Band performs on Halloween weekend at bowling alley

According to Keithley, he is a good friend of John Wright, former member of another legendary punk band, Nomeansno, which recently announced its permanent breakup after a long hiatus. Wright and his former bandmate Tom Holliston both reside in Lund. Keithley said he was saddened by the Nomeansno news.

“There’s a bit of an old-time punk paradise up there in Powell River, from what I’m hearing,” said Joey Keithley, D.O.A. founder and the last remaining member from the original band.

Keithley said D.O.A. broke up twice, seriously from 1990 to about 1992 when they did not perform a single show, and then a farewell tour was held at the end of 2012 to 2013, when Keithley thought he was going to be elected as an MLA provincially, which did not come to fruition.

According to Keithley, after 38 years and more than 3,000 shows, he is not ready to follow Wright’s lead and retire D.O.A. anytime soon.

show. Pigment Vehicle toured with D.O.A. across Canada during the Festival of Atheists tour in 1998.

According to MacRae, the members of D.O.A. like it in Powell River.

“Mike and Paddy come up here often and they

have connections here and friends,” said MacRae. “They came here and played McKinney’s Pub last time and enjoyed it.”

Alex Robert Holstine Alex was born in Runnymeed, Saskatchewan, on January 19, 1920, and passed away at the age of 96 in Powell River on October 15, 2016. He was predeceased by his son Wayne (25 years old) in 1973. Left to mourn Alex are his wife of 71 years Marion, daughter Janice (Horst Abelmann, deceased), sons Barry (Barb Jackson) and Glenn (Bev Gustafson), grandchildren Rayna Guevara (Brandon), Stefan Holstine (Kate Williams), Carlee Holstine (Lucas Brettell) and Evan MacFarlane and great-grandchildren Jessica, Deven and Mikayla.

Alex has one surviving sister, Laura Mustard, and sister-in-law Alice Henderson, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends of many years.

No service by request. Donations may be made in Alex’s name to a charity of your choice.

Our family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers at Evergreen Care Unit for the love and care of Alex during his time there. Also a kind thank-you to Pat at Stubberfield Funeral home for his care and attention.

“GONE FISHIN”

Pete was born and raised in Powell River. He joined the United States Navy after high school and following, many adventures abroad, he returned home to live life to its fullest: golfing, fishing and boating with close friends.

He later became a Life Master at bridge. He worked as a union carpenter in the mill for most of his work life. Pete spent many years honing his skills, trolling the lakes and ocean up and down the coast. The thing that brought Pete the most joy was passing on those skills to the next generation so they could experience what he had known and loved his whole life. Whether it was freshly caught salmon, prawns and crab or vegetables he had grown in his own garden, Pete couldn’t give enough away to the people in his life. As described by his brother Ian, he was generous to a fault.

We, your family and friends, love you, Pete. Thank you so much for all the great memories and everything you have given us.

You will be greatly missed and warmly remembered always.

A big thank-you to Dr. Burns and to the nurses in the oncology unit and on the fourth floor at Powell River General Hospital.
