Inn at Westview property manager Jack Barr has responded to City of Powell River council with a letter outlining the building owner’s issues with taking the ramshackle structure down.

Barr’s letter was the first time council has officially heard from the property manager on the potential demolition of the building.

“We appreciate that most people don’t have the proper perspective to fully understand the complexities of this issue,” stated Barr.

“They just want action.”

lining steps necessary to impose remedial action on the building, including a timeline, and to send a letter to Barr’s management company, American Investments, informing him the building has become a problem.

According to Barr’s letter, the amount of asbestos in the building’s walls, identified in a recent environmental assessment, is “the main reason for the delays to this point, and the reason that costs have doubled in the remediation of the property.”

Cost estimates to take the building down have varied and are higher than originally expected, according to the letter.

“We too, as stated many times previously, would like nothing better than to see it gone,” wrote Barr.

building and another one planned for mid-December, but anonymous complaints to WorkSafe BC over concerns with the building’s structural integrity have restricted access to the building for a third estimate.

American Investments now needs to have the structure assessed before anyone can be permitted to enter.

If forced to take the building down, building owner Seaboard Hotels could face bankruptcy, stated Barr in his letter.

Barr wrote that once Seaboard is able to ascertain “reliable assessments” as to the costs involved, the company may look at trying to sell the property “as is.”

“We appreciate the time this is taking and council’s frustration surrounding it, but we’re sure you can see that it is not a cut-anddry issue,” wrote Barr. “We

want to assure you that we are working on a process; however it is not going to happen overnight, nor is Seaboard or we going to be pressured into making a decision that could have detrimental ramifications.”

At the Tuesday, December 13, committee of the whole meeting, councillor Rob Southcott said the time to choose whether to do something with the dilapidated building has long passed.

“We’re at a point where the inn is headed in one particular direction,” said Southcott. “The only way this is going is that more water is getting in, creating more damage inside with greater potential cost and liability.”

Councillor Maggie Hathaway responded by telling the committee that as Barr continues to work on the process, so too should city staff.

“We have some other properties in the area that we’re moving forward on,” she said, referring to a private residence on Joyce Avenue near Duncan Street.

“We need to move forward on this one as well.”

City of Powell River chief administrative office Mac Fraser told the committee that staff is proceeding with council’s request to provide a report that will lay out steps to proceed with dealing with Seaboard’s property, including a commercial property appraisal. Fraser said that report will be presented in January.

The amount of timber coming out of Powell River’s community forest is slated to increase by almost half after the BC government signed off on its latest management plan this summer.

City of Powell River’s committee of the whole received a letter from Powell River Community Forest president Greg Hemphill at its meeting on Tuesday, December 13. The letter states that in July, BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations approved the community forest board’s latest management plan for the 7,100-hectare forestland located east of the city and the Duck Lake Protected Area.

Powell River Community Forest is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the city. The management plan is the culmination of a review process the board initiated over three years ago, wrote Hemphill.

“Our overriding objective for the process was to ensure forest practices on the community forest are fully sustainable over the long term,” he stated in the letter.

The board hired forestry consultants to create a timber-supply analysis that mapped and tracked the forest’s inventory of tree types, heights and sizes.

The community forest is “fortunate to have a very stable short- and long-term timber supply,” stated Hemphill.

A key aspect of the management plan is an increase to the woodland’s annual al-

lowable cut from 25,000 to 35,000 cubic metres.

Hemphill acknowledged the 40 per cent increase was conservative, based on recommendations from the supply analysis that suggested the increase could have been as high as 57 per cent and still remain sustainable.

According to former provincial chief forester Jim Snetsinger, who was contracted to review the findings of the supply-analysis report and help the board through the provincial process of setting a new annual allowable cut level, the community forest board can feel comfortable that the forest can be sustainably managed at a level between 35,000 to 40,000 cubic metres per year.

Snetsinger warned in his report that despite starting out a decade ago with a high level of public support, a potential risk of setting the allowable cut too high would be “to cause some negative public reaction.”

City of Powell River councillor and finance committee chair Russell Brewer said at the meeting that the annual cut increase would have a significant economic impact for the city.

“All things being equal, this will mean a 40 per cent increase in dividends as well,” Brewer told the committee.

Annual elections were held for School District 47 board of education on Tuesday, December 13.

The elections are mandated each year throughout the board’s four-year term.

Returning as board chair is Doug Skinner, who will also act as the district’s BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSE A) representative. BCPSEA negotiates with teachers in the province on behalf of school boards.

Since 2006, when the community forest was established, it has provided more than $6 million in dividends to pay for more than 60 community projects.

“It’s great and the dividend goes to a lot of excellent community projects, but I am concerned that those projects have lifetime cycle

of costs associated with them,” said Brewer. “If we keep sinking all of the dividend into capital projects, then at some point there are all those lifecycle costs that will catch up.”

Brewer said he would like to see at least some of the funds used to address some of the city’s social-planning issues and go toward replenishing the city’s reserve funds.

“We need to start talking about our reserves and building up the plan B for the ‘what-if’ scenarios,” he added. “We haven’t really tackled that in a big way yet.”

BC Ferries’ new vessel for the ComoxPowell River run, Salish Orca, sailed through the Panama Canal on Sunday, December 18, on its way to BC from Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk, Poland.

The ship spent five days waiting in line before making its way through the 77-kilometre canal.

The new ferry crossed the Atlantic Ocean via Santa Cruz, Canary Islands, where it stopped for fuel and supplies.

Salish Orca is expected to arrive in Victoria next month and enter service in the spring. The ship is the first of three BC Ferries’ vessels being built in Europe.

Regional district Electoral Area C director Colin Palmer said at the meeting that he met with McLennan prior to her presentation.

Later that week, at the regional district’s committee of the whole meeting on Thursday, December 15, Friends of Stillwater Bluffs Association appeared as a delegation to announce it had formed a non-profit society able to fundraise for

parkland acquisition and was looking to further pursue securing the bluffs as either a protected area or a regional park.

Association spokesperson Janet May told the committee the goal of the organization is “to protect the ecological integrity and to secure low impact public pedestrian access to the bluffs.” She added the organization would also like the regional district board to accept its 2015 parkland acquisition strategy as a policy directive.

“We feel that adopting this parkland acquisition strategy would be a positive foundational step in achieving our goals and the goals of others,” said May. “We’re here because we feel there is an urgency to actually building our parkland and greenspace inventory.”

Regional district staff reported to the committee that the strategy was discussed in fall strategic planning sessions, but it had not yet been assigned

any timelines.

Electoral Area D director Sandy McCormick said she thought May’s presentation made a strong case for reactivating the regional district’s parks and greenspace implementation advisory committee and that group could help push the issue of parkland acquisition forward.

Municipal director Russell Brewer said with the release of the Expanded Regional Recreation Initiative Study last week he would like to see parkland acquisition included in a broader discussion.

Regional parks is a regional service that city and rural residents pay into, unlike Powell River Recreation Complex, said Brewer.

“If we’re going to talk about park acquisition, I don’t want to have that conversation independent of talking about the recreation complex, one of the elephants in the room,” said Brewer. “They are not independent conversations.”

Hydro project advances BC’s provincial government has approved a fiveyear investigation into a potential hydroelectric project for Goat Island in the middle of Powell Lake.

Powell River Regional District announced the approval at its planning committee meeting on Tuesday, December 13.

Electoral Area A director Patrick Brabazon said at the meeting that the proliferation of hydroelectric projects has become an issue of principle for him, with BC Hydro paying a premium for the power.

“I wonder if we are learning our lesson on applications for investigative purpose for water power,” said Brabazon. “I think I have.

The next one that hits the table will not be favourably received.”

He added high-voltage transmission lines interfere with other industrial and recreational uses of the land.

The regional board supported the provincial government’s referral last December for the 2,000-megawatt pumped-storage hydroelectric project, stating the project did not contravene any bylaws regulating activity in the area, but City of Powell River ‘s council opposed the development as its lines would run through the Haslam Lake watershed, the source of the city’s drinking water, and Powell River Community Forest.

Pumped-storage hydroelectric systems, common in Asia and Europe, generate

electricity by pumping water between reservoirs at different elevations. The systems can generate significantly more power than run-ofthe-river projects.

Electoral Area C director Colin Palmer pointed out that the original motion that made up the referral to the provincial government included a number of ecological, geotechnical and social-impact studies and asked that the regional district be able to comment further once these studies were sent to them.

Despite that, Palmer said he thought the project was “one of the daftest ones” the planning committee had seen so far.

According to a referrals application update report from regional district planner Julia Dykstra, the regional district received notification from BC Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations on November 21 that it had granted the fiveyear licence to Vancouverbased hydro-power engi-

neering consultants BBA, formerly known as Kawa Engineering.

The licence, which covers 1,174 hectares, includes Clover and Frogpond lakes.

Kawa Engineering was involved in designing the Toba Montrose and Jimmie Creek run-of-the-river projects northwest of Powell River.

Dykstra pointed out in her report that when the province asked for consideration of the application it was for 4,654 hectares, the footprint of the power plant and transmission lines, and the province approved the investigation of only the power plant area.

Local conservation advocate Janet Southcott told the committee during question period that the potential location for the facility on Goat Island is also the nesting site of red-listed species Northern Goshawk, only one of three sites in the regional district. She told the committee she would be contacting the engineering firm about the nest.

Adamson said she will be organizing a meeting in early January to have a look at available land and vacant office space and would like to have representatives from the city at the meeting.

City chief administrative officer Mac Fraser said he and city director of infrastructure Tor Birtig would be willing to attend.

Mayor Dave Formosa suggested the group of non-profits look at vacant office space as the city currently has a large surplus.

Use of Powell River Employment Program (PREP) Society’s immigration services program this past year has increased and is expected to continue to grow, and that has administrators looking for a larger space.

PREP executive director Lyn Adamson appeared before City of Powell River’s committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, December 13, to present her idea and see if the city would be willing to partner up.

Adamson told the committee the organization’s immigrant-services program, directed to help newcomers navigate the process of settling in Powell River, had 109 individual contacts in 2016, about 35 more than the previous year.

“Our numbers are up and we expect the trend to continue,” said Adamson.

She explained that the program has an “austere budget” and has outgown the current space on Marine Avenue.

Adamson said she was aware of a number of other non-profit societies that are looking for new space.

Christmas through their eyes That pivotal moment in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! where the bitter, cynical ol’ Grinch’s icy heart is melted by holiday cheer, and then grows to be three times its normal size, is a classic representation on how this time of year can bring joy and happiness to those who often need it most. Something tells me even Scrooge would find happiness from the art and stories provided by School District 47 children in this issue’s holiday supplement.

Reading the children’s stories and admiring their art for “Christmas through their eyes,” the Peak team was impressed by Powell River’s youth and the efforts they made to be part of our long-running holiday tradition.

We received hundreds of entries from students of all ages who are attending École Côte-du-Soleil, Edgehill Elementary School, Henderson Elementary School, James Thomson Elementary School, Kelly Creek Community School, Texada Island Elementary School and Westview Elementary School.

Encouragingly, the children’s stories and artwork downplay receiving presents and candy in order to emphasize how important this time of the year can be for the whole community, and how the spirit of the season is about so much more than material items.

Much has been made about the use of the word “Christmas” to identify the holidays that fall around winter solstice. No matter what your beliefs are, everyone can agree that when we refer to Christmas, the themes of giving, family and togetherness always apply. This was definitely not lost on the students of School District 47.

We hope you enjoy the artwork and stories in our special section this issue, and from all of us here at the Peak, to all of you, happy holidays.

Be merry and safe out there and, above all else, remember: if you try to eat a gingerbread man who is relaxing in the sun, Santa will spank your bottom.

LETTERS » One-sided crossing In regard to a third crossing [“Third Crossing Society steps up advocacy,” December 14], I’ve read through the Third Crossing Society website.

They say that they’ve “done their homework” and “done substantial research.” Yet all they look at are potential benefits.

Solid, robust research should and would include consideration and discussion of possible negative c o n s e q u e n c e s / e f fe c t s .

Maybe I missed something, but I didn’t see anything like that on their website.

Such a lopsided approach suggests that what they’re presenting as “research” is actually more like a special interest/lobbyists’ sales pitch.

Right from the get-go, I don’t agree with their claim that, “From the outset, it must be understood and acknowledged that the ferry service as it exists today is unacceptable. There appears to be almost universal agreement on this point.”

I’d be interested to know what “research” they’re basing this claim on. I’m actually pretty happy with our

ferry service (and so are a lot of people I know). Sure, I might grumble on occasion, but that certainly doesn’t mean I’d opt to replace the ferries with a huge overland highway.

I understand T hird Crossing Society has a number of supporters who envision that fixed-road access would be beneficial to our town.

I am also aware that there are a number of people who, like myself, do not share these views and, for numerous reasons, are opposed to the proposal.

So far, public discussion has largely been dominated

by Third Crossing advocates.

I’d really like to see that change.

We need a broader discussion: one that includes views from a range of people and a consideration of potential cons, not just pros.

Founders of the Sunshine Coast Trail are asking Powell River Regional District board for more time to consider the impact of its regional trails plan initiative.

Members of the Powell River Parks and Wilderness Society (PRPAWS) board of directors, including Sunshine Coast Trail cofounders Eagle Walz and Scott Glaspey, presented to the regional district committee of the whole on Thursday, December 15.

The regional district released the draft of Powell River Regional District regional trails plan as part of the committee of the whole

agenda. Before the report was released, PRPAWS had asked for an opportunity to address the regional trails plan working group to present the organization’s concerns.

“We look forward to having a trails plan that will serve this community well,” said Walz to the committee. “At this point though, it is still somewhat flawed and I’d like to point out what we think would benefit from another look.”

Glaspey told the committee that as a co-founder of the trail, he is understandably passionate about its future.

“It’s not just some line on a map,” said Glaspey. “Tens of thousands of hours have gone into it. It is special and deserves respect.”

The draft trails plan calls for the Sunshine Coast Trail, which was specifically designed for hikers, to be considered multi-use and open to mountain bikers and other nonmotorized trail users.

PRPAWS board director Richie Tait told the committee that despite starting out looking for the public’s thoughts on the plan, the actual work done did not include the people who use and maintain the trails and that could affect how trails are maintained going forward.

Fellow director Wes Bingham said the basic premise throughout the regional trails plan is the assumption that all the trails will be multi-use and volunteers will do all the work.

“That sets the plan up for failure,”

said Bingham. “I wish that you wouldn’t rush through approving this plan and consider it carefully because the future of our trails is in your hands.”

Glaspey added that there are undeniable conflicts that happen between hikers, mountain bikers and other user groups, but a top-down plan will not help users solve the problem.

“If you have conflicting groups, they have to get face to face and sort things out,” said Glaspey. “If somebody makes a decision and the process does not involve real face to face, then somebody’s going to get annoyed and it just breeds mistrust of the process.”

Glaspey urged the regional dis-

trict to try to get this right.

“For us, this is like taking a kid away and saying you have joint custody,” he said. “I’ve been on this a long time and I am passionate.”

Instead of recommending the regional board accept the regional trails plan at its next meeting on Wednesday, December 21, the committee passed a motion to the board to have it receive the plan, a distinction that leaves the door open for more comment before it looks to implement it.

The committee is also recommending that the board establish a regional parks and trails network standing-advisory committee and recruit and retain a regional parks and trails coordinator.

COUNCIL BRIEFS Applies for solar grant City of Powell River council approved the application for a federal infrastructure planning grant at its meeting on Thursday, December 15. Food bank keeps busy Community service for those in need values donations year-round DAVID BRINDLE community@prpeak.com

Over a five-day period this season, approximately 250 people walk through the doors of the Powell River Action Centre Food Bank, according to operations manager Savanna Dee. It is a busy place at this time of year and, despite what some might feel would be a difficult and emotional environment to work in, Dee said it never gets her down.

“Some people come in and they burst out crying at having to be here because their situation in life is so dire and they’re forced to come to the food bank,” said Dee. “I’ll take the time to talk to them and try to make them

feel better.”

Dee said she joined the organization as a volunteer in April and then was handpicked by Gina Kendrick to be her successor. Kendrick had been the heart and soul of the organization for more than two decades until her passing earlier this year.

“This is the first Christmas for me and I’m actually overwhelmed at the generosity of the community at Christmas time for the food bank and the people in our community who need help,” said Dee. Those who come to the food bank at this and every time of year are people of every stripe, she said. Some have jobs and are just not making enough for all of their groceries, according to Dee, and are low-income families with children, single mothers, people on disability and old-age pensioners.

away until next year, said Dee. They are well stocked, but there is always need for more, she said.

Dee said although the food bank always appreciates food donations, cash donations are even more useful for the organization.

goods some people clean out the back of their cupboard and give us food that’s five, 10 or 15 years old,” she said.

There is another benefit to the food bank when people give cash over cans and that is a more efficient use of volunteer resources, according to Dee. “I need a small army of volunteers to go through every can and box to check the date,” she said. “We’re inevitably left with a lot of boxes of food that are completely unusable.”

Dee said that every food item donated is touched five to seven times by volunteers before it goes into a hamper.

“With money it’s bought, it’s on the shelf and it’s in our storeroom,” she said.

“We just buy the cases and cartons and no one

has to check dates.”

Sponsored by Coast FM, City Transfer and Safeway, a recent community food bank drive raised cash and food contributions.

According to Coast FM operations manager Kim Wall, the seed for the food bank drive idea came out of a meeting with City Transfer president Donna Stobbart.

“It was hard for me to believe that in a city this size, we would have kids going hungry,” said Wall. “I said to Donna, ‘We should be able to do something together.’”

City Transfer and Safeway became involved and the drive raised $24,000 in cash and $8,000 in food items, according to Wall.

Powell River Action Centre Food Bank is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

of every week. People in need can only take a hamper once a month. For this holiday season, Dee said she was able to put a little extra in each hamper, including stovetop stuffing, pop, candy and a Christmas ham.

For all the work food bank staff and volunteers do through the year, and especially at this time of year, Dee said all they want for Christmas is a delivery van.

“We are doing pickups at the stores,” she said. “We’ve managed to get the money to buy a commercial fridge and freezer and we’re going to do the farm-to-food program. We need to be able to get around and have the space. My little car just isn’t big enough for all of it.

Students design climbing wall Education board supports adventure program at Kelly Creek Community School DAVID BRINDLE community@prpeak.com

A presentation made to Powell River Board of Education trustees on Tuesday, December 13, will likely lead to an indoor rockclimbing bouldering wall being built at Kelly Creek Community School.

“We had previously said that the board would be able to support something,” said School District 47 secretarytreasurer Steve Hopkins. “It was just a matter of, what does it look like?”

A group of grade seven students from Kelly Creek’s outdoor adventure program, taught by Andrew Shostak, proposed three options to the board of what the climbing wall might look like.

“Mr. Shostak thought we should have a climbing wall so we could teach the younger kids and have fun, and it would be cool for outdoor adventure,” said 12-year-old student Ella Conroy.

The outdoor learning program is always a focus at Kelly Creek, said Shostak, adding that the wall is adventure and experience-

based, which will add another dimension to the program.

He said every student in his class completed their own design, starting with the actual blueprints used in the construction of a new gym and stage where the wall will be built.

“The class then looked at those blueprints, did all their calculations and each student came up with their own scale design using a 3D-design tool,” said Shostak.

That computer tool was an open-source software called SketchUp. “I liked making the designs on SketchUp,” said Conroy.

“It was fun making different kinds of climbing walls and seeing which one was better.”

Shostak said he has used SketchUp in the past but not to this extent, where creating the scale versions was so important.

“It is a pretty complex program,” he said. “There are a lot of different ways to do things with this software. If students have questions, I can help them, but I let them create their own ways to do things. It inspires creativity, inspires problem solving and inspires design.”

Budget will ultimately decide which is the best design and that decision will be made by the school board, according to Hopkins.

Option one is for entrylevel bouldering, option two is entry level to intermediate and option three is for com-

plex-intermediate bouldering. The students said they prefer option three, the most expensive, which will cost between $39,500 and $49,000.

“The board was generally supportive of the mid-price range,” said Hopkins. He estimated the budget will be between $30,000 and $35,000.

Grade sevens will only be able to use the wall for a short time. When completed, sometime in the spring, they will have just a few months to enjoy it before going off to grade eight at Brooks Secondary School next fall.

According to Shostak, the students are all excited about leaving the climbing wall as a legacy for future Kelly Creek students.

“They’re excited to work as leaders when the wall does get built and teach the younger kids, and really feel like they’re passing on their knowledge and skills,” said Shostak.

Jack Padgett, 12, said he’s been lucky to go to Kelly Creek and the climbing wall is great for the school.

“It’s a pretty unique opportunity and lots of schools don’t have that because they don’t have nice teachers and people who want it,” said Padgett. “I thought it would be a great learning and teaching tool, especially for kids to get exercise, and a great opportunity to learn new physical activity and have fun with your friends and classmates.”

See the forest for the trees Just up the road from me this week, an excavator and a feller-buncher are chewing their way through a new cutblock. According to BC Timber Sales, it is an age class 6 forest, meaning trees of 100 to 120 years of age, which is older than feller-bunchers and chemically managed replanting schemes. It might be second growth, but it’s still old enough to actually be called a forest.

A modern tree plantation is as different from a natural forest as a suburban lawn is different from a wild meadow. BC Timber Sales will tell you that there is an oldgrowth management area in the north-eastern corner of

this block, extending into the protected area around the Sunshine Coast Trail to the north. They will also be

quick to point out that it is only a five-hectare block, so it does really mean much.

By itself, maybe it doesn’t.

But you can’t take a little piece of a forest and consider it by itself. These disconnected pieces of natural forest in a sea of clearcut are like desert islands to the shipwrecked ecology of coastal forests; enough for survival, maybe, but not for long.

Our public forests are managed as if they are individual pieces that can be pulled apart from each other, as if a forest is only the trees and as long as some trees over a certain age are left standing, everything can carry on as usual. Take a look at how

few forests are left and you will see where that kind of thinking has gotten us.

Myself and others like me, who advocate for forests and not just lawns of trees, are often painted as twodimensional characters who hate loggers and logging. I come from a logging family and I’m not against logging; I’m against stupid logging.

I’m against logging that lowers the overall quality of the forests, from an economic and ecological standpoint.

I’m against flattening hectares upon hectares of forest, trucking away the nicest pieces, and leaving the rest to rot.

Most of all, I’m against

vacuuming trees out of the landscape with as little labour cost as possible, so corporate shareholders and company bosses can benefit.

I’m against replacing whole crews of careful fallers with one feller-buncher operator, then sending all the logs, along with all the value-added jobs, somewhere far away so corporations can make more profit.

There are ways of cutting trees that leave the forest intact, that can provide the fibre resources our community needs and keep people working without tearing apart the fabric of the landscape.

Those ways of doing things provide a living for the ones

Holidays a busy time for organists Sound of classic carols fill the festive season DAVID BRINDLE community@prpeak.com

For some organists in Powell River, the holidays are a favourite time of year, to a point, while for others, it is the best time of year, period.

“You get through the favourite few concerts that you really like and then you’ve pretty much had it,” said Don James, organist and co-founder of Powell River Academy of Music.

Christmas is fellow organist Richard Olfert’s favourite time of year, and carols are his favourite type of church music, he said. The organist and choirmaster at the United Church said carols can be more athletic to play on the complicated instrument and that there is more of a demand on an organist’s abilities when playing the centuries-old German, French and English carols that are so familiar to people.

“Christmas is when you hear the most organ music,

traditional music that goes back centuries, and it is certainly a busy time of year for the people who play the instrument in Powell River,” said Olfert.

For many years, Jim Dickson has sat in the organ pit at the Patricia Theatre for an annual Christmas event featuring carolling and Santa Claus. He takes his shoes off, he said, to better feel the pedals on a new organ that has replaced the previous one damaged beyond repair in the 2014 flood at the theatre.

“The organ they did have at the Patricia Theatre was great,” said Dickson. “It was an electric organ with a great pipe sound to it. It was fun to play.”

While there are no true pipe organs in Powell River and all are electronic or hybrids, James, Olfert and Dickson said it is the former that creates the thrill for the player and audience. There is nothing like the huge sound when all the stops are pulled.

“When you have a particularly fine organ that was built by the masters,” said James, “with all of these wooden, metal, small and huge pipes that are actually built into the architectural

structure of the building, then it’s utterly amazing when you’re playing them.”

Dickson said he “sadly” misses the great pipe organs.

“I’ll be honest with you,” he said. “When I go back to Toronto, I usually end up playing one of the pipe organs in a Catholic or Anglican church.”

James said he became fascinated by the organ when he was attending university, and playing it helped pay for his studies.

“You had several levels of keyboards,” said James.

“You had a foot pedal that was full width and you learned to play with your heel and toe, your fingers and hands often on different keyboards, simultaneously.

It was a great challenge.”

Dickson said Christmas was his favourite time of year when he was playing regularly, but it was also exhausting. For most organists, playing is not their only responsibility.

“When I lived in Toronto, I’d just be going from place to place,” said Dickson.

“When I moved to Calgary, it was basically the same. I had the Catholic church, the Anglican and United church and their choirs, and everything else as well.”

When Dickson and his family moved here, he said he was done.

“That lasted, I think, six months,” he said. “Then the person who was playing organ at the Anglican

Church moved off and they were stuck, so I filled in and that went on for some time, and then from there I went to the United Church.”

From all of the carols to play on the organ at Christmas, it is difficult to pick one, according to James, Olmert and Dickson.

James said “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night.”

For Dickson, it is “O Holy Night” and Olfert said he likes them all.

To say Tony Papa has lived a life is, by any account, an understatement. His accomplishments include winning a Much Music Video Award, making a video for Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, one of the great guitarists of the last century, and eventually starting Powell River Digital Film School after moving to Powell River in 1986.

Papa has toured Canada, hung out with music greats in New York and worked on monster movies in Los Angeles.

Where did you go from there?

I was in New York City in 1982 and did my first music video, “In My Skin,” with my own band. This guy named Mark Knopfler, frontman for Dire Straits, saw it. I finally got in touch with him. We would just hang and he’d show me some songs he was working on. He had one called “Private Dancer.” By the time I came back to him with some ideas for a video, he’d changed it to “Private Investigations.” He sold “Private Dancer” to Tina Turner and I did the video for “Private Investigations.”

How did you start your career?

I started playing in a small band called The Actions when I was about 16. We broke up, got back together and called it The Reactions. I had a hit song called “Fun Time in the Summer” and the name of that band was Tony and the Frogs. The height of our existence, really, was when we were on tour across the country

Where did you go after New York?

Eventually I went to Los Angeles and worked on some creature movies out there and did a cross between a documentary and music video called “Beauty and the Beast: Ocean Falls” and it won a video of the year award from MuchMusic.

That is my goal still. I am try-

ing, and have been trying for a few years, to bring more feature films into town. That was a success. If we can get more features coming here we can show the outside world that we have a viable place to film. That was a beautiful film.

Memorial match honours pioneer Annual Steve Steele soccer game a tradition for more than two decades DAVID BRINDLE community@prpeak.com

One of soccer player Jamie Zrobak’s fondest memories of Steve Steele was, before any game he refereed, Steele would make the players tuck in their jerseys and pull up their socks or he would not start the match.

Iain Livingstone, a longtime friend of Steele, said as a referee, he wasn’t known as a whistleblower.

“Just a quiet word from Steele on the field was enough to make the players behave,” said Livingstone.

Steele is remembered by many in Powell River’s soccer community and at the mill, where he worked as a millwright, as a humble man; funny, quiet and with a quick-witted sense of humour.

It was 20 years ago that Zrobak, now president of Powell River Villa soccer club, first laced up his cleats for the Steve Steele Memorial Boxing Day Match, and he is hopeful to play again this year in the friendly game honouring the memory of a Powell River soccer pioneer.

“I’ve missed a couple of games due to injury, being beat up from playing Villa games, but I haven’t missed too many,” he said.

Steele was also a family friend of Zrobak. “He was such a great guy,” he said. “He had a lot of involvement in Villa, the men’s league and refereeing.”

The Boxing Day match actually predates Steele. It began as a fundraiser for the Cup of Milk fund the former Powell River News sponsored, beginning in the late 1960s. The match has been held in Steele’s honour since 1993 and proceeds are donated to BC Cancer Society.

Steele passed away after a long battle with cancer and his friend Livingstone has a lasting memory of him.

“He’d been having treatment and he was wearing a little cap because he’d lost a lot of hair,” said Livingstone.

“That was the last time I remember seeing him on a soccer field.”

Livingstone said his last visit with Steele was a few days before his passing, and only weeks away from the opening games of the World Cup hosted by the United States in 1994.

“England weren’t in it, but it didn’t matter to him,” said Livingstone. “The World Cup was a big thing for him, so he was quite anxious to hang on to see who won it. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it.”

Bus driver and team statistician Norm Philip did a fabulous job getting the Powell River Kings home safely in snowy conditions after a three-game BC Hockey League road trip that saw the team lose every game.

There were other positives to take away from the trip, according to head coach Kent Lewis. None of his players were hurt and the team can come back refreshed after the holiday break.

Lewis said that out of the road trip’s nine periods “we played one period in Surrey, and that’s it.”

Thursday, December 15, against Surrey Eagles of the Mainland Division, Kings lost 4-3. The next night, against West Kelowna, they lost 6-1, and in Wenatchee, Washington, they were shut out by the Wild 5-0.

“The Kelowna game, I’m going to

sum it up with this: we surrendered 23 shots and lost 6-1,” said Lewis. “We made terrible errors because we had the puck most of the time, but ran into a hot goalie and made some very silly mistakes.”

In the Kings 5-0 loss to Wenatchee, one of the top clubs in the league, Lewis said the team knew it was going up against a very good hockey club and the Kings had not been playing their best recently.

“This is probably the worst I’ve seen a club of mine play, ever,” said Lewis. “It is not the norm.”

The coach pointed out the Kings were missing some key players with Carter Turnbull and Kyle Betts having had strong performances for Canada West in the recent World Junior A Challenge, and the team was suffering some fatigue.

Kings were tied with Victoria for top spot in Island Division during parts of the first half of the season. They have now fallen behind 10 points, with the Grizzlies at 53 points and the Kings at 43.

Lewis said he now looks toward the second half of the season.

“The second half is a lot more fun,” he

said. “Games become a lot tougher and a lot more meaningful, and you start paying attention more to standings.

It’s fun. It’s a quick two months.”

With the BC Hockey League roster deadline looming in January, Lewis said the last month has not shown him what he needs out of some of his players, so he’ll be putting on his general manager hat to look at ways to improve his lineup.

“We’ll need to better ourselves,” he said. “No question.”

Kings are back on the ice Friday, December 30, against division rival team Nanaimo.

“I look forward to the second half,” said Lewis. “I may sound like Scrooge at times, but this is a good group of players, we will be consistent and it’s going to be a lot of fun in the second half.”

Kings coaches, players and team staff would like to wish all of their fans a Merry Christmas, said Lewis.

“He was very well-liked,” said Livingstone. “He was a quiet fellow.

He liked his beer, no question about that. He was a really good soccer player. He’d played semi-pro for one of the lower English teams before he came here. He’d been around playing soccer all his life.”

There was only one year the memorial game held in Steele’s honour was cancelled, and that was due to a heavy snow, but it’s been on every other year, according to Livingstone, even when the weather has been inclement.

The friendly match is played between players from Powell River Villa soccer club and a team comprised of players from the men’s league and other players who are home for the holidays.

Zrobak said last year the game attracted a number of fans, despite terrible weather. According to his own forecast for this year’s match, he said “it’s probably going to be cold but clear, and we’re hopeful to get a lot of people out.”

Steve Steele Memorial Boxing Day Match will be played 1:30 pm on December 26 at Brooks Secondary School’s turf field.

He also leaves to mourn his dearly loved partner Lynn, loving sister Delores, many loved nieces, nephews and special friends. Our Dad was predeceased by his parents Robert and Agnes McCarter and sisters Marilyn and Audrey.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Reid Westland after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.

Reid was born in Oak Park, Illinois to Everett and Louise Westland, now deceased. He is survived

by Claudia, his wife of 48 years, daughters Kristin ( Wa r r e n ) a n d K a r i n (Ryan), grandchildren Wren and River (Little "Elve") and son Evan. Reid also leaves behind his brother Keith (Jeannie and son Erik), sister Joyce (Tom and son Raymond), cousin Deano (Kris) and many friends and extended family.

The phone rang off the hook for Reid who always had time for a friend, was loyal to a fault and could be counted on when the going got rough.

Reid had an insatiable intellect and was a great reader and seeker of knowledge. He loved lively, stimulating conversations about issues that mattered. He was also wellknown for his stories and sense of humour and was often the most outrageous character in the room and made a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Over the years Reid taught science, published poetry, conducted amphibian research, practiced fish taxidermy and was employed as a youth services worker. Gardening was an interest he cultivated after retiring to Powell River in 2011. He was an avid Muskie fisherman and enjoyed outdoor adventures, walks in the woods, history and discovery, big band and old-time music, poetry, playing with his puppy Arne and, above all, family times.

Although the family cabin in Ontario will always be "sacred ground" and Reid missed his Kenora friends dearly, he would tell you the move to Powell River was one of the best things he ever did. He loved the climate and geography, living near Kristin, Karin and his grandchildren, and especially enjoyed his affiliation with the Powell River Sierra Club.

After researching his family history, Reid had hoped to travel one more time to Norway and Sweden where, in recent years, he established contact with relatives and located the family farms. In 2012, he travelled there with Claudia, and in 2014, he travelled with Kristin and was thrilled that family in Sweden had arranged a large reunion with relatives previously separated for over three generations.

Reid was an energetic, intelligent, complex man who lived on many philosophical levels and could make a connection with anyone. At the same time, he marveled at his good fortune in having "the sweetest and most remarkable daughters in the world" and a wife who loved him. Reid was the life of our party and we will miss him every day.

Thanks to all who have supported our family during this difficult time: Dr. Burns, Dr. Hoffert and nurse Janet, Powell River Community Health Nurses and Personal Care Workers, BC Cancer Agency, Angel Flight of BC, Karin and her wonderful staff at Strive Living, family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held in the new year. In lieu of flowers, please donate to BC SPCA or your favorite charity.
