Simons and his supporters gathered at McKinney’s Pub in Rodmay Hotel the night of Tuesday, May 9, to watch election results come in.

With recounts underway in two ridings, it is still unknown which party will form government, although current results point toward a BC Liberal Party minority with 43 seats. The NDP currently holds 41 seats and BC Green Party holds three.

Simons finished with 11,846 votes in Powell River-Sunshine Coast, more than half the 23,344 total ballots cast in the riding. Simons won with 50.75 per cent of the vote.

“I’m quite pleased with the results, at least locally,” said Simons on election night.

Mathew Wilson, BC Liberal Party candidate for the riding, came in second with 5,717 votes. BC Green Party candidate Kim Darwin came in third with 5,629 votes, trailing Wilson by just 88. BC Cascadia Party candidate Reuben Richards finished with 152 votes.

A few days after the election, Simons spoke about his decisive win and his long-term resonance with voters in the riding. Simons said he thought the tight election results sent a clear message to premier Christy Clark and the BC Liberals. »2

MLA says constituency comes first 1« SIMONS “People in the province expected a change in government and wanted change,” said Simons, “even though it was my fourth time in government, they still saw me as that person for a change.”

Sitting as one of the NDP’s veterans in the legislature, Simons has made his mark for taking the government to task on a variety of issues over the years, from ferry service and seniors driving licence testing to the state of provincial child and youth services and housing affordability.

Whatever side of the legislature he sits on, or what role he plays in a potential NDP government, Simons said his first priority is the riding and making sure the voice of the constituency is heard in the legislature.

“My goal in politics is to influence public policy in a positive way and I’m sure whatever role I have I’ll be able to do that,” he said. “It’s an honour to be an MLA and any opportunity to increase that influence over public policy is one that I would welcome.”

Simons said much work needs to be done to improve ferry service

on the coast as well as improving access to health care and housing for seniors.

“We need to address the demographic changes that are going to occur and be thoughtful and not do government as if it were a photo opportunity,” he said.

Regarding the state of some of the riding’s roads, such as the stretch of Highway 101 outside of Lund, Simons said he thinks it might be a good visual metaphor for the last 16 years of BC Liberals in government.

“Imagine what other ministries look like, the ones where there’s nothing physically to see,” he said.

“Our social service system looks like our roads. It has potholes and edges that fall into ditches.”

On election night, Wilson spoke with Simons by phone at 9:20 pm and congratulated him on the election race.

“The results aren’t exactly what we had hoped for when we went in,” said Wilson, “but I have no regrets about how we ran the campaign, or how it was put together.”

Wilson said he knew through internal polling that the Liberals were facing an uphill challenge to breakthrough in the NDP

“Some may have called it insurmountable, but we didn’t let that deter us,” he added.

Simons said both Wilson and Darwin ran “really strong campaigns with very loyal supporters.”

He added that he will do his best to serve everyone in the riding.

Darwin said, despite her loss, she

is excited about the breakthrough in the election for her party.

“That is the message of hope that I wanted,” said Darwin. “It is more representative of British Columbians to have three parties making the decisions instead of just one. The NDP and the Liberals are going to have to learn how to get along.”

Simons said that, going into the election, he and his campaign felt confident that he had maintained strong support.

Simons has held the riding since 2005.

A couple days after the election, it was clear the province would be watching the recounting of votes in the Courtenay-Comox riding to see if the NDP’s nine-vote victory would hold, denying the Liberals the narrowest majority government possible.

“The Gabriola one is going really well,” said Guenette.

“Their first summer was great and unless this summer is bizarrely disastrous, we’re pretty sure at the end of it we’ll turn it into a permanent change.”

Barton-Bridges said with more destination marketing for Powell River, a favourable currency exchange rate for American tourists, and Canadians travelling in Canada for their holidays, she is hopeful this summer will continue last summer’s trend of greater numbers of visitors to Powell River.

“It’s going to be a pretty busy summer,” she added.

“I’m confident the numbers will be very positive in our favour for continuing this after the pilot finishes.”

The ferry corporation’s 2017 summer schedule goes into effect June 22, about one week earlier than previous years.

Youth council seeks members City of Powell River is looking for new recruits to fill positions on its youth council.

“We’re pretty confident the pilot makes sense, but it gives us the chance to see how it goes,” he added. “If for some reason it’s not used as much as we all think and we’re going to lose money, that might affect raising fares, then it’s not good for anybody.”

BC Ferries public affairs manager Darin Guenette confirmed the ferry corporation examined the advisory committee’s request and decided to keep the 5:35 am sailing from Saltery Bay as a two-year pilot.

BC Ferries has announced it will keep running its early morning sailing from Saltery Bay to Earls Cove on a trial basis this summer, in addition to a mid-afternoon sailing to help with increased tourism traffic volume.

Last January, Northern Sunshine Coast Fer r y Advisory Committee (FAC) requested that BC Ferries examine the annual schedule changes it makes to summer operations on route seven across Jervis Inlet, said committee chair Kim Barton-Bridges.

“We’re very happy,” said Barton-Bridges, “but it’s been a long wait.”

The route seven non-peak schedule, in effect between September and June, includes a 5:35 am sailing from Saltery Bay. When switching to the summer schedule each year, that early morning sailing is transferred to mid-afternoon to help accommodate tourism traffic.

During the past few years, the summer schedule change has created challenges for commercial freight carriers that rely on the early morning sailing for their business, or anyone else who needed to travel to Metro Vancouver and return to Powell River in a single day.

Barton-Bridges said the ferry advisory committee decided to push for the change after hearing from local freight companies.

“We all depend on what they are transporting,” she added. “We might not be on

Councillor Russell Brewer told council at the meeting that the city’s 2.6 per cent increase in property taxes for the average municipal homeowner is lower than similar communities on the coast. Brewer compared Powell River’s increase to those in Campbell River, Gibsons, Sechelt, Comox, Courtenay, Port Alberni and North Cowichan.

Campbell River faces a hike of 2.5 per cent while the others are looking at increases of between 2.7 to 6.4 per cent, said Brewer.

Of the 2.6 per cent increase, 1.4 per cent is due to the city’s $800,000 purchase offer on a 132-acre PRSC Limited Partnership parcel of land located between Millennium Park and Townsite.

Brewer said the 1.4 per cent would stop being collected once that debt is paid in five years.

The partnership with VIU and the school district provides an opportunity for international students to apply for a three-year Canadian work permit once they complete their studies.

Beaulieu said it has become clear that the school needs to be able to provide student housing, given the current rental market and limited homestay spaces available.

She said the school is working concurrently to attract students to Powell River and find a way to provide them with accommodations while they are here.

“One of the things we were made aware of quite early into working with VIU and the school district is that it’s hard to find homestays for students here,” she said.

“Olive Devaud was the right choice.”

She added the former Olive Devaud building requires some renovations, but it will serve the school’s residence purposes well.

“I’ve seen the prospectus on the building,” she said.

“It’s a good building that’s been well kept.”

and we’re not making huge inroads,” he said. “We’re not doing enough. We have not been able to reduce the numbers.”

This year is already shaping up to surpass 2016 numbers, added Martiquet.

It’s not just fentanyl that is to blame, so it is inaccurate to call this a fentanyl crisis, he said.

“The six deaths that occurred were the result of opioids; not all fentanyl, some carfentanil,” said Martiquet.

Carfentanil is also a synthetic opioid painkiller, chemically similar to fentanyl, but about 10,000 times more potent than morphine.

Fentanyl, by comparison, is between 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine.

Martiquet said a Powell River RCMP drug seizure of fake oxycodone pills revealed the pills to contain “a whole mishmash of opioid analogues, not just fentanyl.”

“We know the drugs are contaminated and they are here in Powell River,” he said.

Darlana Treloar lost her son Sean to a fentanyl overdose last May. She said that drug addition can happen to anyone.

“It does not discriminate and it can happen to any family; rich or poor,” Treloar told the audience. “One lapse in judgement can change the course of an entire life.”

Treloar said despite the fact that Powell River is a small, isolated city, it is not “behind the times where drugs are concerned.”

Martiquet said an important message for the community is that overdose deaths are often caused by users not taking basic precautions.

“My take-home message is this: don’t use alone and decrease your dose because you do not know what is in the drugs you are taking,” he said.

According to Hathaway, Powell River needs to lobby the BC government to allocate more funds for battling drug overdoses in the community.

“We need to fully pull in the provincial government for more treatment options here,” said Hathaway.

Martiquet added that naloxone, an injectable drug used to reverse an overdose, is not a magic pill to solve the crisis and does not get to the root of the drug problem.

“These people who are overdosing are damaged people who have been subjected to trauma throughout their lives,” said Martiquet, “usually in childhood.”

Roughly 80 per cent of the individuals dying due to overdose are males between the ages of 30 and 50, said Martiquet.

“This is not a young man’s disease,” he said. “The people dying were experienced users.”

More than 85 Powell River residents, some of them mothers who lost their children to drug overdoses, gathered at the Community Resource Centre to find out more information on the local battle against BC’s opioid crisis.

A community forum held Thursday, May 11, included presentations from Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) medical health officer Paul Martiquet, Powell River Mental Health and Addictions representatives and emergency first responders.

Martiquet began the evening by providing the framework for understanding the crisis. It was a just over a year ago that BC saw its highest monthly total of overdose deaths in a decade and provincial health officer Perry Kendall declared a public health emergency.

It is well known that 2016 was a record year for overdose deaths in the province, with close to 1,000 individuals dying. Six of those deaths occurred in Powell River, Martiquet told the audience.

The people’s choice Whether you voted for him or not, Nicholas Simons has proven he has a stronghold of support in Powell River-Sunshine Coast riding. The New Democratic Party candidate ran away with this riding’s election, receiving more than double the votes of the other two main party candidates, Liberal Mathew Wilson and Green Kim Darwin.

Now in his fourth term as MLA in our riding, Simons is hoping his party forms government in some form after recounts and absentee ballots come in later in May. If Simons finds himself in an opposition seat once again, he has made it clear that he will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of our riding to effect change. Hopefully, whatever new government is formed at the end of this month (or sooner) will be more receptive to Simons’ ideas and knowledge of the Powell River-Sunshine Coast riding. If it happens to be NDP, then Simons will become a prominent member of government, and rightly so. After all of his hard work, Simons deserves a cabinet position.

During the Powell River Chamber of Commerce all-candidates forum last month, there was a key moment where Simons let his emotions take over during question and answer period. This is the kind of MLA we need. A person with a large heart, wealth of knowledge and educational background to bring forward inventive ideas and initiatives to tackle problems with housing, transportation, health, education, infrastructure and so much more.

We need a fighter in Victoria. Last Tuesday night, we got one, again.

Canada’s bottled water industry is supportive of community environmental initiatives, however some inaccuracies from the Let’s Talk Trash Team [“Plastic water bottles: A thing of the past?” Peak Weekender, May 12, 2017] need to be addressed.

For most Canadians, drinking tap or bottled water is not an either-or conversation; 91 per cent of bottledwater drinkers drink tap water at home and use bottled water only as a convenient on-the-go option.

Plastic water bottles are also one of the most recycled packaging materials across Canada. According to Encorp Pacific, which runs BC’s province-wide ReturnIt program, 77 per cent of plastic beverage containers were recycled in 2015. These

recycled containers are then sold to recycling plants in Vancouver and Calgary and used to make new containers, strapping material and fibres. This process provides 86 per cent more savings in energy than would be required to manufacture these items from raw materials.

Finally, consumers should take comfort in the safety of bottled water and its packaging. Bottled water is strictly regulated by Health Canada, and modern polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles do not contain Bisphenol A (BPA). Further information on the safety of bottled water is available on Health Canada’s website: hcsc.gc.ca.

tant to the Canadian beverage industry as they are to all citizens.

Unfounded result Looking at this year’s provincial election results [“Editorial: Riding representation,” May 17], I found the notion of negative voting to be totally unfounded.

In the 2013 election, the BC Liberals received roughly 44 per cent of the popular vote compared to 40 per cent for the New Democratic Party (NDP), eight per cent for BC Green Party and roughly eight per cent for other parties or independents.

In the 2017 preliminary count, BC Liberals received 41 per cent, NDP received 40 per cent, BC Greens had roughly 17 per cent and the

others combined for two per cent.

So where did the BC Green Party get all the votes? Did they steal them from the NDP like every one feared?

No. Have a closer look.

In the Powell RiverSunshine Coast riding in 2013, BC Liberals received 33 per cent, NDP 55 per cent and BC Green Party approximately 12 per cent of the votes. In 2017, BC Liberals received 24.5 per cent while BC Greens received 24 per cent (double the 2013 total) and the NDP had 51 per cent in a rather substantial victory.

So, I need to ask again, did the Greens steal all the votes from the NDP? Same answer: obviously not.

Please keep this in mind when you vote, and please vote in all elections.

City of Powell River council upholds single-use bottle ban PEAK WEBSITE USER SANDY TIMMS Just embarrassing that this is even a topic that the council is dealing with. It’s not council’s job to parent anyone on what they choose to use or not.

PEAK WEBSITE USER CEE ROW Bravo to the courageous councillors who voted to ban plastic bottles. The mayor, on the other hand, is not providing the right leadership on this debate. The mayor’s comments that it’s “ridiculous” to have to carry a reusable container from your home out with you to an event is actually what’s ridiculous. I have been doing this very thing for years. It’s very easy and you don’t spend a nickel on bottled water, nor does a new single-use plastic bottle have to be created in order to quench your thirst. I haven’t even touched on the issue of companies’ access to water for bottling. I am so fed up with seeing plastic garbage everywhere in our world; in the woods, on beaches, in the ditches, at the side of the road and in the digestive tracts of wild creatures. Gather up some courage, mayor Dave, and make a brave decision to ban these plastic bottles. People will adapt and your leadership will demonstrate how forward-thinking Powell River is.

Repressed people all over the world do not have the right to vote and some of us take that for granted.

However, that whole notion of no vote, no voice is nonsense. The argument that people who did not vote have no right to complain is ridicu-

lous. People who do not vote have every right not to, and do not have to give any explanation for it. It is their right.

It is right there in Section 2(b) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which protects “freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.”

If a person does not want to vote, you cannot make them.

“I voted” was a campaign designed to elicit an emotional reaction. If it can be shown it had no effect on getting out the vote for this election, perhaps they should step it up for 2021 with something like, “You’d better vote or else.”

See if that works to drag more people to the polls.

City of Powell River followed through with its remediation and demolition order for a residential lot at 4468 Joyce Avenue last week.

Last December, council declared the property and its buildings a nuisance due to their damaged, dilapidated and unclean condition.

Council ordered property owner Rajinder Mann to take the house and garage down and clean up the lot within 60 days of the order.

Despite being directed by council’s order to do so, Mann did not apply to the city for a demolition permit, said mayor Dave Formosa.

“I’m sad that it came to this for the owner,” said Formosa. “He just did not respond in a timely

manner.”

City-hired contractors removed hazardous materials from the house, tore it down and removed all trash on the premises.

The home’s insulation contained vermiculite, a material known to contain cancer-causing asbestos, which was removed and properly disposed of on Wednesday, May 10.

Contractors then tore the house and garage down and cleaned up all debris leftover from the demolition, according to a city media release.

The city will send Mann a bill for the asbestos removal, demolition and lot cleanup.

Formosa said he recognized the property had been tied up in proceedings related to Mann’s formerly dissolved company, but that

it should not have resulted in “letting things with the property get to the point of no return.”

During the cleanup, city staff determined the lot had not been contaminated by landfill waste in the nearby Squatters Creek dumpsite.

The mayor said it is not possible to compare the city’s actions against the lot at 4468 Joyce Avenue with that of the former Inn at Westview building located next to Town Centre Mall.

The Joyce lot still retains “good value,” something that cannot be said about the lot where the former Inn at Westview sits, due to the cost of removing the former hotel, said Formosa.

“This lot and the inn are just not comparable in any regard,” said Formosa, “due to the value of the property after the fact.”

Council contracts social planner

City of Powell River announced that it has contracted community developer Christien Kaaij to help the region’s three local governments take the next steps with social planning.

The city announced Friday, May 5, that it had awarded Kaaij with a six-month contract after putting the contract out for competitive bidding in March.

In January, Vancouver Coastal Health provided the city with a $20,000 grant to advance regional social planning.

Powell River Regional District, Tla’amin Nation and the city have all agreed to look at establishing a regional social action and development committee to work on recommendations of the Community Social Plan, which came out of an April 2015 Tapping the Groundswell conference and report.

In the next six months, Kaaij will be responsible for writing a terms of reference for the regional social action committee and developing and planning objectives for the committee and its subcommittee, a regional housing working group.

“It’s something I don’t think the city has ever had,” said Hathaway. “Social planning is becoming more and more important.”

After Kaaij’s contract is complete, local governments will be looking at contributing to hiring a permanent social planner.

Last fall, Powell River E m p l o y m e n t P ro g ra m Society released its Community Social Plan with more than 100 recommendations in 10 areas. Its primary recommendation was the three local governments in the region work together and form a social action committee tasked with working on issues such as affordable housing and food security.

With the report coming out, local social planning initiatives will become all the more important, said Kaaij.

“The city has been working toward something like this for many years,” she said.

“It’s the right time to do something.”

Kaaij is president and chief executive officer of Powell River-based Alofii Consultancy and has more than two decades of experience working in Canada and her native Holland on social issues such as homelessness, food security, seniors housing, community inclusion, early childhood education and community health issues.

She recently completed her masters degree in community development looking at seniors issues in Powell River.

Child care providers are hoping a new local consultant position funded by the BC government will be one step toward improving child care services in the Powell River area.

May has been proclaimed Child Care Month by the province of BC and Thursday, May 18, is Child Care Provider Appreciation Day, but child care providers and industry representatives in the area recognize much work needs to be done in order to improve services.

Access to support and networking for child care providers and parents is one problem, according to Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) licensing officer for Powell River Christine Kennedy, who has been employed by VCH for the past five years. However, the even larger issue, according to Kennedy, is lack of child care spaces and qualified staff.

As Powell River’s population grows and becomes younger, the need for more child care providers continues to increase, but the pool of certified early childhood educators, traditionally a low-paying job, is very shallow.

“Access to qualified staff is definitely a problem here, as are education resources,” said Kennedy.

“Some people have suggested that they don’t believe an early childhood education certificate should be required to operate a centre, but we’re trying to get better child care, so that’s not really an option.”

than 30 child care centres, approximately 20 of which are licensed; the remaining 10 or so are family-run from the home. While the licensed centres require certified staff, the family-run centres do not, although they still need a business licence to operate.

A c u r re n t j o b p o s t i n g b y PacificCARE, an organization based in Nanaimo that offers programs that support child care throughout the province and is funded by BC Ministry of Children and Family Development, is looking for a permanent, part-time child care consultant for the Powell River area to start as soon as possible. PacificCARE had a similar position in the area that ceased several years ago.

“We found there was a need in the community, and the community asked for it, to have a person on a more local basis,” said PacificCARE executive director Scott Beam. “We are always trying to improve our services, so we adjusted our budget to make it work and meet that need.”

The hope of local child care providers is that the reinstated position will provide more support services and create a community among early childhood educators and parents.

“Our hopes are that the consultant can get a feel of the child care situation in Powell River and make assessments about what is needed,” said Beam.

Roots and Wings Early Learning Centre owner Maggie Ellwyn said she remembers when PacificCARE had a dedicated consultant in the area and it helped to bring child care providers together for networking and education opportunities. The past few years have been lacking in communication and resources, according to Ellwyn.

Although Ellwyn’s centre has five staff members who network among themselves, most centres have indi-

vidual care providers and the community as a whole could benefit from a dedicated child care consultant, she said.

“It’s important just to have the support network and to talk about the challenges and benefits of working with children,” said Ellwyn, “and to get much-needed feedback from parents about what they are wanting and needing, as well as how children have grown and developed over the years.”

One of the large gaps Kennedy identifies is in care for children aged 0-3. Because of regulations on the number of children in that age bracket that each centre can have, a lack of centres creates specific challenges. While Ellwyn’s centre currently has 12 children aged 0-3, family-run centres are only allowed to have the equivalent of three fulltime children in the younger age bracket.

Meanwhile, centres that are closing down are not being replaced by enough new ones, said Kennedy.

“We have quite a few of the family-run centres that are going to retire in the next few years,” said Kennedy, “so that’s going to be a big problem when those ones close. We need more people willing to operate centres.”

Last September, Debbie Mueller opened Ladybugs Daycare, a child care centre, out of her home. The family centre currently has approximately 12 children registered parttime, all but one of them are three years old or younger. Mueller said her centre filled up very quickly, just by word of mouth.

“The kids I got right away were the children of my friends, and they were leaving a day care that was closing down, so I knew how desperate the situation was,” said Mueller.

“I’ve been extremely busy and I still have a lot of people asking me if I

can fit kids in, even for a half-day a week.”

Mueller agreed that more resources for child care providers would be useful, including a permanent consultant for Powell River. Currently, Mueller said when she needs support she contacts PacificCARE consultant Michelle Carty, who comes to Powell River twice monthly and also handles Comox Valley. Carty will be the contact point for the new Powell River consultant, said Beam.

Many other challenges still exist in child care, an industry that has traditionally been under-recognized, and those challenges apply to family centres as well as larger child care facilities such as Ellwyn’s Roots and Wings.

“One of the biggest challenges is a lack of respect for our profession,” said Ellwyn. “It’s something that’s always existed, despite best efforts to educate people and for them to understand we’re not babysitters.”

The rate of pay for most early childhood educators is alarming, said Kennedy. While family-run centres can be profitable under the right

conditions, most staff members are making little more than minimum wage, according to Kennedy, and are often left without access to professional development found in other industries.

“The wages these workers receive are often very minimal,” said Kennedy. “Who’s going to go to school for a year and then come out making minimum wage?”

Kennedy’s job entails ensuring all child care centres meet requirements for safety, including the amount of space, staff qualifications, care planning for special needs children, enough access to outdoor play, healthy nutrition and more.

One thing Kennedy has noticed in her monitoring of Powell River is the quality level of child care, which she said, overall, is high.

“Child care workers are pretty much raising our children, so they deserve a huge amount of respect for working with very little wages and resources,” said Kennedy. “The care they give these children is essential for their development.”

Canoe club paddles on Veterans and newcomers find value in water sport IONATAN WAISGLUSS Peak contributor

Powell River Outrigger Society coach Michael Matthews has been rowing most of his life. When he retired to Powell River, his passion for water sports, and the outrigger canoe, grew even more.

“The outrigger canoe has been around for a long time,” said Matthews. “It’s basically a canoe-type vessel with an outrigger for stability.”

According to Matthews, who paddles a one-person vessel near his home in Okeover and a six-person vessel when training with his team, the style of watercraft goes back thousands of years to Polynesia.

Matthews said the local team was recently awarded a trophy for fastest circumnavigation of Keats Island (12 kilometres) in Howe Sound.

“It’s a great team,” said Matthews. “We won a few

trophies at the national championships in Gibsons last year.”

The team also travelled to Australia in 2016 for the World Outrigger Sprint Championships.

“Lots of people come to watch the world championships,” said Matthews.

Paddler Holly Peterson has been with the team for almost a year and said she took to the sport right away.

“I loved it from the first moment I was in the boat,” said Peterson, who was introduced to the related sport of dragon boating last spring and then became interested in outrigger canoeing. She was rowing with the team by July.

“I love the intensity of the sport; it’s a full-bodied workout,” she said. “It’s more rewarding than doing reps at the gym.”

According to Peterson, Matthews is an effective coach.

“He’s quite motivating and supportive,” she said.

Even newer to the sport, fellow paddler George Smith joined the team in February.

said Smith. “They told me to give it a try to see if I liked it.”

Smith said he will be attending his first race this month.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “We have a great team.”

Matthews said outrigger canoeing is a techniquebased sport that is physically demanding, but technique

and skill are required.

“It can be pretty demanding schedule-wise as well,” he said.

The majority of the paddlers are over 60, with many over 70, and only one under 50, said Matthews.

“We’re a very old club,” said Matthews. “We’d love to get some younger members.”

Matthews said he would like to see a community paddling centre in Powell River that combines facilities for outrigger canoeing, dragon boating and other rowing sports.

“It would be great to get kids involved and reach a sort of critical mass,” said

Matthews. “We don’t do a lot of outreach; it has been mainly word of mouth.”

Matthews said the ideal centre would be accessible from town and close to their canoeing spots.

“We’ve looked at a few spots,” he said. “The biggest hurdle is the capital cost.”

According to Peterson, the group provides a great opportunity to travel and to meet new people.

“Everyone’s out there to have fun,” she said.

climates in Powell River, so every garden is different,” said Nash. “You get to see everything from early stages to masterpieces on the tour.”

According to Nash, a highlight of the tour is seeing people’s unique solutions to garden problems.

“One year, we toured a garden south of town that had chickens,” she said. “They were using classical music to keep the bears away.”

Every year the tour includes a catered lunch and special performances. This year, a display of miniatures by artist Lin Morrison will be featured, along with live art in the gardens. Past tours have included bonsai exhibitions, hypertufa container workshops and a variety of other entertain-

ing and educational displays, said Wood, adding that a master gardener is always present to answer questions.

Over the years, the committee has donated money toward drinking fountains, public benches, scholarships and other initiatives geared to greening and beautifying Powell River, said Wood.

Finding people willing to showcase their gardens can often be a challenge, she said.

“Some people worry about having a perfect garden, but there’s no such thing,” said Wood. “Gardening is continuously evolving and changing, and what we’re focusing on is a diversity of gardens.”

Nash said being invited to someone’s private garden is

a privilege.

“It’s not about having the perfect garden,” said Nash.

“It’s about sharing what

you’re doing and having a community experience.”

Seeing a garden grow over the years is unlike anything else, according to Powell River Spring Garden Tour organizer Diana Wood, who has planted a garden everywhere she has lived in Powell River, including a large English garden at her Westview Avenue property called Boxwood Cottage.

“It was just blackberries and alders when we moved in,” said Wood.

Her young garden was among a handful on display for Powell River’s first spring garden tour 20 years ago, she said.

According to Wood, the tour was started by a group of six women who were interested in raising money to start a community garden. The group eventually became Powell River Spring Garden Tour Committee, she said.

“We were inspired by garden tour fundraisers being put on by Denman Island gardener Des Kennedy,” said Wood. “The first year we put our own gardens on display and every year since we have added new gardens.”

Over the years, Wood and the committee have included gardens that are sandy, boggy, sloped or otherwise peculiar, she said.

“We try to include things like beachfront gardens and forest gardens so there’s a real mix of situations and approaches,” said Wood.

“Some years, we visit gardens that have been on previous tours five or six years ago; seeing the changes since the last visit is like seeing a before and after picture.”

Gardener Sharon Nash has been attending the tours for about eight years.

“I had friends who were going and they asked if I would come along,” said Nash.

The diversity of gardens really struck her, she added.

schools in Powell River used to celebrate it,” said James Thomson principal Jasmin Marshman. “We’re the only school still doing it.”

Celebrations at the school begin Friday, May 19, at 9:15 am with a parade along Sutherland Avenue.

According to Marshman, the parade includes vintage cars, Tla’amin Nation drummers, a pipe band and delegates from various levels of government.

“We have lots of people join us,” said Marshman.

“We have the mayor and our MLA; there are also representatives from School District 47.”

After the parade, students, staff and volunteers gather for May Day ceremonies, including a maypole dance, said Marshman.

“The maypole is basically a tall pole with ribbons attached to it,” said Marshman. “Students hold onto the ribbons and dance around it, weaving a pattern as part of the celebration.”

Marshman said the dance steps and music have remained the same since the tradition started at the school 61 years ago.

“There was a lady from Vancouver who brought it to Powell River,” said Marshman. “We’ve been doing it long enough that some

of the students’ grandparents remember doing it as kids.”

For former students and participants, some traditions are not to be messed with, said Marshman.

“People are very used to it being a certain way,” she added. “One year we tried to change the music and some of the folks were really upset; they wrote us letters telling us to change it back.”

Despite its timelessness, the celebration has changed in important ways, said Marshman. Celebrations now involve a community that was historically excluded from the festival. “ We’re incor porating Tla’amin traditions, which is really wonderful to see,” she said.

According to Marshman, ceremonies open with a Tla’amin prayer and close with a traditional friendship dance. She added that the celebration used to include the crowning of a May Queen.

“Now we have May Day ambassadors,” said Marshman.

“They’re voted in by the May Day committee.”

Each year, committee delegates receive a special May Day cape from the previous year’s ambassadors.

“It’s really nice to see

the different grades come together for this,” said Marshman, “and so many of the parents come, even ones who are unavailable for most other school events; they know how important this is and many of them volunteer.”

May Day volunteer coordinator Matthew Hull has been involved with the festival for five years and noted that help comes from a variety of people and organizations.

“There are so many parents who want to help,” said Hull.

“There’s also the Wildwood Grannies who put on May Day tea for the adults and many people who donate baked goods.”

According to Hull, parents and caregivers who prepare lunches and smoothies for the students focus on using local ingredients.

Marshman said support also comes from people living in the neighbourhood.

“Even some of the neighbours look forward to May Day; some of them come out for the parade, and they have for years,” said Marshman. “For us, this festival is part of our school’s tradition and the kids really look forward to it; you see them in their house colours and they are so proud.”

Tap dancer benefits from hard work Avari Dodd finds success through determination and dedication IONATAN WAISGLUSS Peak contributor

Avari Dodd’s feet are always tapping a beat. The 10-year-old Powell River resident dances at every opportunity, including solo or in duos, trios or groups.

“I tap all day; sometimes it’s difficult in school to not move at all,” said Avari. “Even in the grocery stores, I’m tapping down the aisles.”

Avari started taking dance classes when she was three years old. “First, I was doing creative movement and then tap dance when I turned four,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun; it’s like being the beat and percussion for the music.”

Of the many dance styles to choose from, tap and musical are her favourites, said Avari.

“If someone’s interested in dance, I would recommend starting with jazz or Acro dance, because you get to combine dancing with gymnastics,” she said.

“For me, it’s tap dance; I just want to tap all the time.”

For almost seven years, Avari has been attending classes at Sheridan Dance Academy and learning under its artistic director Mariah Sheridan Runions.

Founded in 2008, the academy offers a variety of recreational and competitive classes for students, said Sheridan Runions, who has been teaching dance since 2002. As a child, Sheridan Runions said she found tap dancing quite difficult.

“Now, it’s easily my favourite style of dance,” she said.

When Sheridan Runions started teaching tap at her academy six years ago, two students took the course, including Avari.

“Avari is one determined kid,” said Sheridan Runions. “You can tell she goes home and practises every day; she has the drive for it.”

Currently, nearly 30 students are enrolled in the tap course. According to Sheridan Runions, Avari has also expressed interest in becoming a dance teacher.

“As her dance teacher, that’s music to my ears; I’m so proud of her,” said Sheridan Runions. “Her mom, Jennifer, is very supportive as well. She’s so involved and helpful with the events and other parents, especially for the competitions.”

According to Avari, competitions are great opportunities to put her practising to work.

“It’s also nice to win trophies,” she said.

In February, Avari’s team took home the Studio Spirit Award at a tap dancing competition in North Vancouver.

Avari said she auditioned for Team Canada Dance in April and was happy to find out she had been accepted to the team. Her mother, who grew up in Langley and also studied tap dance and ballet, said she is proud of Avari’s work ethic and accomplishments.

“She works so hard, practising evenings and weekends,” said Jennifer, “but you can really see how much she loves it when she’s performing on stage.”

Seeing her daughter pursue her passion has been very special, she added.

“I want to support her in doing what she loves,” said Jennifer. “I drive her to dance classes five times a week; she does tap dancing twice, as well as jazz, ballet, Acro and contemporary. She’s also going to masterclasses, conventions and competitions out of town, so we get to travel a lot.”

Letterpress and book-making enthusiast Stuart Isto may not be an artist in the traditional sense, but his work with old-fashioned printing presses is as creative as any painter or sculptor. Isto bought a house on Cranberry Lake in 2005 after moving from Vancouver and continued his work with antique letterpresses as a retirement hobby after a career in computers. Now 20 years into the craft, Isto has a vast array of knowledge that he passes on to members of the community in his popular The Gift of the Letterpress workshops through Powell River Public Library.

His next workshops, with cofacilitator and graphic designer Gary Shilling, take place Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20.

How did you get into collecting letterpresses and making books with them?

I’ve been interested in book arts and nice books all of my life, and in the late ’80s I started taking a more active interest in bookbinding and printing, and managed to get an old-fashioned printing press. So I started doing some printing and bookbinding and repairs. Once you have one press, you start looking at other presses to print on. So it turned into kind of a monstrous collection.

And now you have a bunch of them in your house?

When I bought my house in Cranberry it had a big shop area that was used for building houses, so it was an open space that I could use as a fair-sized print shop. But I already had most of it when we lived in Vancouver.

Now you have moved more into the teaching side with these

library workshops. What is it like teaching people about the process of letterpress printing?

I have to keep the group numbers down, because it’s real hands-on, and if you get too many people it becomes difficult. People are fascinated by the mechanical nature of these old antiques, some of them go back before the 20th century.

Does the old-school process help with people’s creativity?

That’s the attraction of it, really, that you get to handle all of the letters and it connects you with a long history of printing that goes back hundreds of years.

Do you remember how you first got into all of this?

There was a book arts fair in Vancouver in about 1987, where they had a lot of items on display, and that piqued my interest because of the fascinating process of traditional printing.

Only a few days before the Powell River men’s seven-a-side spring soccer league season began, its founder, Dean Thorsell, put team rosters together in time for the start of play on Wednesday, May 3.

“We have eight teams right now, which is what we’ve had in our league for the last three years,” said Thorsell. “I put the teams together kind of last minute.”

As league organizer, Thorsell matches players with teams and takes care of game scheduling, but on the field the league is largely player-driven.

Games are not super serious, but still competitive, according to Thorsell, which keeps it fun for players with broad age differences and skill levels, and sometimes sporadic commitment.

On occasion, not enough players are available to fill a roster, which is okay because games at Brooks Secondary School’s turf field are played under different rules than official soccer, said Thorsell.

Seven-a-side is a faster-paced game due to a tighter playing area and more are goals scored; that

makes it more fun, he added.

“We play on half a field and there are no offsides,” said Thorsell. “We play kick-ins from the sides instead of throw-ins and we sub on the fly.”

At any given time during the game, a player can come out and be replaced without a stoppage in play.

“There is a no slide tackling rule to protect the young guys, because we have players all the way down to U14 playing,” said Thorsell.

Neil Bastock, who plays for the over-55 team, said he was amazed at how many players turn out each week and how evenly matched Thorsell made the teams to ensure league parity.

“It’s great because of the range in age,” said Bastock. “There were 14-year-old kids playing 55-yearolds; they have the speed and skills and we have the experience, apparently.”

Vancouver Island Soccer League’s Powell River Villa soccer club uses the seven-a-side league to keep players fit and scout potentially new and younger players.

“The main intent of why it was started was to keep players active during the off-season and keep guys playing,” said Villa president Jamie Zroback, “and to get the new crop out so they can be playing with our guys, and then be invited to training camp.”

“If any players want to come out, I will be more than happy to put them on a team, but we’re probably not going over eight teams,” he said. “Usually, at some point during the season, mostly

toward the end, we have a drop in numbers. We’re sometimes scraping together six-a-side instead of seven. Sometimes, if there are extra players, we’ll play eight-a-side.”

Since grade nine, local hockey player Keaton Mastrodonato has covered a lot of ground throughout BC. Now, the 16-yearold could find himself on American soil in the years ahead after being drafted by the United State Hockey League (USHL).

Mastrodonato was selected in the 11th round, 165th overall, on Tuesday, May 2, by Tri City Storm from

Kearney, Nebraska. USHL is the country’s top junior hockey league consisting of players 20 years of age or younger.

“It was a great recognition, to see that other teams out there recognized my talent,” said Mastrodonato. “It’s a confidence-booster to get draft by a team from out of the country, and it showed me there weren’t just teams around here that had interest in me.”

Before Mastrodonato makes a final decision on playing in Nebraska, he has a full year of BC Hockey League (BCHL) action ahead of him with Alberni Valley Bulldogs for the 2017-2018 season.

Mastrodonato currently lives in Nanaimo and captains BC Hockey Major Midget League team North Island Silvertips while at-

tending grade 11 at Nanaimo District Secondary School.

He said he plans on graduating in Powell River next year after the Bulldogs finish up their BCHL season. Then he will consider his next option, while keeping his eye on a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) team.

“My goal is to get an NCAA commitment from playing with the Bulldogs,” said Mastrodonato, “then I can either stay in the BCHL or go and play for my USHL team for a year or two before I go into NCAA.” Mastrodonato played minor hockey in Powell River until he was 14 years old, then moved to Victoria to play triple A tier one hockey.

He moved to Nanaimo to play with the Silvertips the following year.

Hockey has been a huge

part of his life since he was very young, according to his mother Jodi Mastrodonato.

“We’re very proud of him and all of his hard work is finally paying off,” said Jodi, a physical education teacher at Brooks Secondary School, “and we like the avenues that are opening up to him.”

Mastrodonato said strong support from his family and the community of Powell River have been instrumental to his success in a sport that has always been his passion.

“My family has supported me all of the way, since I was a little kid, and letting me go away at such a young age in grade nine was a big part of my career,” he said. “It made me make those steps forward, and now I have all of these opportunities with the BCHL, USHL and hopefully some NCAA schools as well.”

Grace Marion King passed away at Comox Valley Seniors Village at 04:20 in the early morning on Tuesday, May 8, 2017, at the age of 86. Marion was born in Vancouver and after school graduation was employed as a sales person in a Camera Shop in Vancouver.

It wasn’t long before she married her first husband in Vancouver and began her motherly instincts for raising children. She had two boys, Robert and David, two years apart.

Marion is survived by and will be greatly missed by her second husband, Gerald King and her two sons and their families.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
