New w i nex per t sT M ’s Limited Edition collection wines are now available at Westview U-Vin U-Brew, starting with two January releases: Barbera, a medium-bodied red from Piedmont, Italy, and Pinot Grigio Verduzzo, a white blend from Veneto, Italy. T he eig ht-week w i nes from some of the world’s premium growing regions are available for a six-week price. “We get the limited editions every year, five new w ines come out from January to April, released on a monthly basis,” explains Jenny Lessard, who became a co-owner of the business in November after spending three years as an employee. Mosaic Red, a blend of merlot, zinfandel, petit syrah and cabernet sauv ig non f rom Pa so Robles, Ca l i for n ia, w i l l be released next month, followed in March by Gewürztraminer Verdelho Muscat, a medium-bodied white with off-dry sweetness from Murray Darling, Australia. The fina l release, in April, is Fortitude w ith Grape Skins, a red blend from Riverland, Australia. “Winexpert is number one for kit wines in North America,” says co-owner Jackie Marjerison, who also spent three years work i ng at West v iew U-Vin U-Brew before buying into the business six years ago. WinexpertsTM k its are known for quality and richness. “We also have a whole book of four-, six- and eight-week regular wine kits,” says Jenny. “There is a huge variety, more than a hundred, from super dry to super sweet and light to heavy.” Jackie encourages anyone interested in learning more about wine to “watch for our wine-tasting in October. We have it every year.” Free bottles are available for anyone ordering an initial batch of wine. Customers can also bring their own fruit or juice to be made into wine. A minimum of 35 pounds of fruit is required to make the five-gallon (30-bottle) batch. “Any kind of fruit works,” says Jackie. With help from knowledgeable staff, ma k ing wine or beer at Westview U-V i n U-Brew ca n be an easy and fun experience for existing and new customers. Orders are placed and paid for, yeast is pitched, and then bottling takes place four, six or eight weeks later. “We’re always here and willing to help guide people,” says Jenny. “Everyone who comes in has a good time and we have new machines that make it a little bit easier.” Many customers have been making beer or wine on the premises since before Jackie and Jenny were involved in the business. “They become like fam-

ily; it’s fun,” adds Jenny. “They come in and all they are really required to do is have a taste to make sure it’s to their liking, because we guarantee our products. If it is, then we go on about bottling with them.” If the taste of the wine or beer is not quite what the customer wants, options include returning and replacing it with a different batch or receiving money back. In these rare occurrences, the guarantee policy results in those customers coming back. “We want people to be

happy with their purchases,” says Jackie. After the first batch is bottled and consumed, customers are asked to save the bottles for use with their next order. Bottle labels are included in the initial price. Beer is kettle-brewed using only natural ingredients. After fermentation, beer is cold-filtered a nd force-ca rbonated with food-grade carbon dioxide. “More than 100 kinds of ale and lager are available to choose from,” says

Jackie. Westview U-Vin U-Brew is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm, at 7030 Glacier Street. Fa c i l i t a t e d b y f o o d business specialist Greg McLaren, the local event takes participants through a planning process specifically designed for food businesses. Lunch, refreshments and an eight-module planning binder are included in the event cost. Appleby says the two-day crash course in food business teaches everything from food regulations, new products and opportunities in the marketplace, leaving participants with

what she calls a “broad understanding” of a complicated industry. “The more I know, the more I know I don’t know,” she laughs. “The food industry is extremely complex and it’s about wading through that complexity and still maintaining some form of control over our resources.” As for some advice for budding food businesses, Appleby has a very simple and practical response. “Do a business plan,” she laughs.

Does the Virto V Replace Traditional Hearing Aids? Whether at work, during conversations in small groups or when watching television, one in six adults experience problems when it comes to accurate speech comprehension and hearing in everyday situations. Although background noise and music can impair communication with friends and family, two thirds of those affected still do not use any hearing aids.

For some clients, the smaller design of the Virto V hearing aids might possibly replace the more traditional behindtheear hearing aids, and like many of our other products, these hearing aids can easily connect wirelessly with TVs and smartphones,” explains Prof. Stefan Launer, CSO of the Swiss manufacturer Phonak.

There are many reasons for this but for most people it’s that they are not Prof. Stefan Launer, CSO of Swiss convinced that hearing aids will sig manufacturer Phonak, presents nificantly benefit them or it’s the unease the new Virto V hearing aids. they feel about attracting attention by wearing a visible hearing aid. Virtual function of the ear This is why the Swiss manufacturer Phonak has developed a world first: Virto V. These hearing aids are manu factured using a modern 3D printing process that provides a customfit miniature hearing aid that disappears into the ear canal, making it almost invisible to others. Despite its small size, the latest and most advanced Phonak hearing technology is still contained in the casing.

“Thanks to a new operating system, these new hearing aids can provide a virtual alternative for natural hearing, as experienced by people with normal hearing. Through intelligent control, the software can improve speech under standing, even in loud situations and by utilizing the 3D printing process, these hearing aids fit the natural anatomy of the ear as closely as possible making them truly a customfit solution.

See how the virtually invisible Virto V fits into your daily routine.

If you are interested in finding out more about these new hearing aids, the first step is to book hearing evaluation and determine if the new Virto V technology is the right solution for you. For those who are hard of hearing, this can be par ticularly useful for finding out whether it is possible to hear and understand more clearly with discreet inthecanal hearing solutions. At Connect Hearing we offer you the chance to be among the first to try these stateoftheart hearing aids. Call 1.888.408.7377 to book your complimentary evaluation today.

Olof Sigurveig Nightingale (Johnson) May 11, 1940 - December 23, 2015

Olof passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness. She was predeceased by her parents Oskar and Olga Johnson. Olof leaves to mourn her beloved husband Chris Nightingale of Powell River and sisters Bonnie Paetkau of Sechelt, Alda Grames of Halfmoon Bay and Heather Johnson of Vancouver. She was a caring, attentive aunt to 15, a great-aunt to 23 and a loyal sister-in-law to Wynne Nightingale (Andy), Jim (Julie) Nightingale, Leah Nightingale (Gary), Eric Paetkau and Gregory Kravec. Olof was born in Eriksdale, Manitoba. The granddaughter of Icelandic immigrants, her first language was Icelandic. She grew up on a farm surrounded by her extended family, attended a one-room school and, as the second of four daughters, was introduced to outdoor chores at an early age. She was proficient on a tractor and horsedrawn equipment before she was 10. She was athletic and competitive, even to the point of playing baseball on the community boy’s team. Olof finished high school in Hay River, NT, then taught for a year in Fort Simpson, NT, before returning to Manitoba to attend business college. She rejoined her family in Whitehorse, YT, where she worked for many years before finally pursuing her dream to become a proficient draughtsman. She later attended college in Anchorage, Alaska. In the early 1970s, Olof relocated to Vancouver where she met Chris and the two formed a loving partnership, which lasted for more than 40 years. They married in 1986. Olof was welcomed by the entire Nightingale family, who provided her with continuing emotional support and encouragement. Olof and Chris moved to Powell River in 1978 and together built their charming and original home in Southview. She changed careers one more time and devoted several years of faithful service to Powell River General Hospital. Olof and Chris enjoyed many trips to Mexico and South America before her health prevented further travel. She was kind, artistic, passionate, creative and, most of all, great company. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at Cranberry Seniors Centre at 2 pm on Saturday, January 23. In Olof ’s memory, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Powell River Food Bank.

Richard Frederick Donnelly Dick passed away peacefully December 18, 2015. He will be missed by his sister Elaine, friend Marilyn, sister-in-law Doreen, niece Dorothy (Gary) and nephew Richard (Barbara). Dick was predeceased by his brother Roy and niece Wendy. Dick’s family Kim, Courteney (Steve), Gerry, Kyla, Lauren, Bryce, Dominic and Jaden enjoyed his company. He had a peaceful and loving nature with a passion for the outdoors. Over his 85 years he worked for City of Powell River, was active in the Powell River Rod and Gun Club and enjoyed his time in the trails with the BOMB squad. For the people who knew and loved Dick, please join us for a toast at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164 on Saturday, January 16, from noon to 3 pm. Dick would be honoured by a donation to Salvation Army, the Legion or SPCA in lieu of flowers. A special thank you to Marilyn for your care and compassion for him.

Rosaline Elinor Silzer ( Dennison) May 11, 1925 – December 21, 2015

It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Rose Silzer, who passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s hospital, December 21, 2015. Rose was predeceased by her mother and father Minnie and William Dennison, two sisters Alice and Franceis Dennison, brother Ross, daughter Valerie and son Ross. Rose is survived by relatives, extended family and many friends who loved her like family. Rose was born in Denholm, Saskatchewan. She came to the west coast with her family in 1938. After living in several communities she settled in Powell River, where she married Alf Postill and raised her two children. Rose thought she had the best job ever as a practical nurse. She worked in the Powell River General Hospital for 20 years. Rose spent some time in Abbotsford with her second husband Ed Silzer. After Ed passed away, she moved to the Comox Valley to be closer to her daughter Valerie. Rose had many passions; gardening, traveling and entertaining. She had a very caring nature and was truly at her happiest when she had people around her. Rose will be sadly missed by her family, extended family and many wonderful friends. A celebration of life/tea will be held January 16, 2016 at 1:30 pm at D’Esterre Senior Centre, 1801 Beaufort Avenue, Comox. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.

Gaston Raymond Rivest September 10, 1935 January 2, 2016

He will be remembered by his loving family, including devoted wife Lucille, three sons Serge, Gilles and Denis and their families, brothers Real, Abel and Ernest and sisters Gisele and Gabrielle and their families. Gaston and Lucille were married June 20, 1959, and moved to Powell River in 1965. After 30 years in Powell River, they settled in Osoyoos in November 1994. Gaston was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church. A funeral mass was celebrated by Father Neil Lustado at 11 am, Friday, January 8, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Osoyoos. Interment and committal followed at Osoyoos Lakeview Cemetery. Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting nunes-pottinger.com. Arrangements entrusted to Nunes-Pottinger Funeral Service & Crematorium.
