Powell River’s newest option for chiropractic care is now open at 105-7373 Duncan Street. Dr. Brittney Chisholm’s new practice, Suncoast Chiropractic + Custom Or t hot ics, is located w it h i n Malaspina Massage, where the Powell River born and raised chiropractor shares space with massage therapists Don and Anne Shelton. “I’m excited to be working with Don and Anne,” says Brittney. “We share the same professional philosophy: patients first.” Brittney also looks forward to working with neighbouring businesses Avid Fitness, Coast Fitness and On Track Physiotherapy. “We’re hoping to build cohesive treatment plans so my clients can do rehab exercises on their own at Avid, if they’re at that level of recovery, or under supervision next door at On Track,” explains Brittney. Clients will also be referred to Coast Fitness for nutritional counselling. Brittney says the close proximity of several wellness professionals allows clients of each business to save time by booking back-toback appointments. “Research shows that chiropractic is more effective when combined with another therapy, such as massage, exercise or rehabilitation,” she says. Brittney offers a compassionate style of chiropractic, taking the time required to assess the needs of each client and address all factors involved with their condition. Specialized treatments include functional movement screens, Graston therapy, Activator and infant care. Her style works especially well for vertigo, migraines, whiplash, sciatica and jaw joint disorders. “I’ve had a lot of success with chronic pain and vertigo sufferers in particular,” says Brittney. “Patients notice remarkable and

While studying pre-med at University of British Columbia, she was referred to a chiropractor after migraines led to vision problems and several specialists were unable to find a solution. Results were life changing and led Brittney down a new path; studies at Canadian Memorial

Brittney also relates to individuals recovering from motor vehicle accident injuries after a May 2015 car accident resulted in her own treatment and rehabilitation. “It’s helped me develop a real empathy toward what accident sufferers go through and highlighted the importance of early care,” says Brittney. begin immediately after a whiplash injury is sustained for a patient to receive maximum benefit, she says. “No one ever gets access to healthcare professionals within a few hours of an accident,” says Brittney. “I had the advantage of knowing what to do and how to treat myself.” Sports injuries, sprains and strains, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, scoliosis and carpal tunnel syndrome are also treated at Suncoast Chiropractic. Ergonomic assessments are offered in-office or at the workplace and, as a member of the I nt er n at ion a l C h i r opr a c t ic Pediatric Association, Brittney has additional qualifications to treat infants and children. According to Brittney, the biggest impediment to individuals seeking chiropractic care is fear of neck manipulation. “If people are nervous, we sit down and chat about what’s going on,” she says. “There are a lot of other things a chiropractor can do for people experiencing headaches or neck pain besides neck manipulation.” For new patients, a consultation eases concerns. The initial conversation is free and covers treatment processes, benefits of the care provided, and answers to any other questions the patient has. Clients can book appointments 9 am-7 pm on Tuesdays, 8 am-5 pm on Wednesdays and 8 am-7 pm on Thursdays by visiting clients.mindbodyonline.com and searching for Dr. Brittney. Alternating Sundays with the existing evening coffee house, the afternoon song

circle debuted last month with a dozen musicians attending, including several guitar players, a fiddler and a mandolin player. “There was a real variety and people were playing different kinds of songs and using different techniques,” says Buckna. Since then, Buckna has set up a Facebook group for participants that allows them to share songs with each other before each circle. The monthly song circle was designed to be a family-friendly event and is open to anyone, with all donations going toward the

costs of running the community space. With the hall’s improved acoustics, after signific a nt r enov at ion s t w o years ago, Buckna says it’s a great environment for accomplished musicians and beginners alike, and the spirit of communal expression in the building is tangible. “It’s like singing in your living room,” says Buckna. “It really is nice, and it’s designed to be a warm and friendly atmosphere, and it’s non-competitive. Come share a song or join in, or just come and listen and enjoy.”

Cranberry Community Hall has a new monthly music event t ha n k s to some helpful suggestions from residents who frequent its regular Sunday coffee houses. Cranberry Hall Sunday Song Circle host Pat Buckna hopes to see musicians of all levels come together at the new afternoon monthly gathering. “A lot of people were saying it would be nice to just sit around and play some songs together, rather than a perform a nc e,” s a y s Buc k n a , also the vice-president of Cranberry Community Hall Association. “So this was a way to get people to sit around and sing and play music, or even to come and listen.” Buckna says the song circle allows musicians and singers to share and teach others songs, join in with their instrument or voice, ask questions about songwriting or just drop by to

There are certain conditions that must be met and set procedures to follow. The Insurance (Vehicle) Regulation, sections 105 – 108, sets some limits on entitlement to claims under section 20. Judith Elaine Pederson (Kerton) 1941 - 2016

Judy passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 10, with her family by her side. She leaves to mourn her husband Gerry, son Steven (Carla), daughter Teresa, siblings Fran (Don) Hart, Patricia (Sam) Salomi, Fred Kerton, Terry (Sandra) Kerton, Penny (Dan) Peters and many nieces and nephews. Judy was predeceased by her parents Viola and Gordon Kerton. Judy’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Dohm and the nurses and staff of Kiwanis Manor and Evergreen Extended Care Unit for their dedication, care and love for Judy. A very special Thank-You to Judy’s dear friends and roommates Elly and Joy, whose friendship and love made Judy so very happy. There will be no service by request. We love you, Jude.

Reid Michael Kyfiuk Reid was born on August 7, 2000, in Powell River and passed away on December 22, 2015, while snowboarding with his family at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island. Reid lit up the room with his zest for life and always tried to make people laugh or feel better. He had a radiant smile that matched his contagiously happy and energetic spirit. He loved to be outside and would constantly remind others to take the time to have fun. When it came to sports, Reid had a warrior’s heart. He worked hard and his passion for whatever sport he was playing (hockey, golf or baseball) shone through to his coaches, teammates and the fans. Reid was also generous and kind. He always told his family he loved them and wasn’t shy about doing it in public. He looked out for his parents; he would wrestle Mom, but always made sure not to hurt her and would take a bit of power off his knuckleball so he didn’t hurt Dad. Reid maintained the faith of a little child. He had an unconditional love for God and a divine insight for how everyone should live. His sister says his eyes were like a window into Heaven. Everyone loved him. Left to cherish Reid are his parents Andy and Denise Kyfiuk, siblings Eric, Lauren, Dean, Tayler and Andrea, grandparents Mike and Helen Kyfiuk, many aunts, uncles and cousins and countless friends. Reid is not gone, he’s just living in a different place now. We can still talk to him. God just took him home. Month’s Mind Mass will be held at Church of the Assumption, 7109 Glacier Street, on Friday, January 22, at 7 pm, with reception to follow in St. Joseph’s Hall, adjacent to the church. Family members will be present. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Jessie D. Mason 1922-2016

With love in our hearts, the family wishes to announce the passing of our mother Jessie. She was predeceased by the love of her life, husband Jack, in 1995. She was a longtime resident, coming to Powell River in 1952, and always said Powell River was the best place in the world to live. Jessie is survived by sons Rod (Mary) and Kelly (Natalie), grandchildren Jennifer, Richard, Sheri and Tanya and great-grandchildren Camden, Carter, Grayson, Mataya and Landon. Special thank you to Dr. Marentette, Dr. Horsfall and all fourth floor nurses for the care in Jessie’s final days. No service by request.

Alma Kingham (née Bell) The heavens have another angel

Alma, aged 84, passed away on December 12, 2015, at her home in Okanogan, Washington, after suffering health complications. Alma was born August 20, 1931, in Manchester, England, and moved to Powell River in 1949, following her sister Iris (Norm) Hill. Together they worked at Trio Cleaners (owned by her sister), where Alma met her husband-to-be Ken Brown. Hanging up her love for roller skating, she married Ken and started on a new journey raising seven children. Alma was a self-employed entrepreneur. Along with her husband and family, she founded the Dog House restaurant, famous for its foot-long hotdogs and fabulous burgers. Alma loved to sew, using her creative mind to design clothes for her children and many others as well as making costumes for school plays. In her later years, she spent her days searching for just the right items to sell at her garage sales and always made sure she had a little something to give to the less fortunate. Alma was predeceased by her first husband Ken Brown and daughter Kathleen Patricia Brown. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Frank Kingham, sons Dave (Pearl) Brown, Norm (Sherrie) Brown, Bob (Cynthea) Brown and Ken Brown, daughters Iris Brown and Trudy (Dave) Perrin, 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, her sister Hilda (Rene) Lacroix and nieces and nephews. No service by request. Love and laughter always.

Diana Lynn Maccargar Diana died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, January 3, at the age of 57. She will be missed by many good friends. A memorial service will follow at a later date.

Doris Genevive Shaw

January 16, 1930 - December 22, 2015 Doris was born in Penticton, BC. She married her true love, Larry Donald Shaw, on June 18, 1949. They lived in many BC communities, including Pent i ct on, Ker em eos, Cawst on, Kamloops and Chase, before settling in Powell River. Doris loved the outdoors, crafts and collecting dolls.

She is survived by son Donald, daughter Linda (Alan) Cross, sisters Clara Johnston, Ruby Reed and Millie Alexander and brother Albert Swanson.
