At a time of year when most people are thinking about financial goals and making investment decisions, First Group of Companies uses its financial blueprint as part of its wealth management offering at First Credit Union ( FC U ) a nd We s t v ie w Agencies. “Having a strong financial foundation is the base for ensuring short- and long-term goals can be met,” says Scott Kovacs, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® at FCU. “It’s about having a conversation, giving advice, looking at the big picture and drafting a financial blueprint to help you get there.” Existing and new clients are taken through the financial foundation checklist to ensure all areas of their personal finances are discussed, from budgeting and cash flow, to risk management, life insurance, investment a llocation, retirement planning and estate planning. “Each member’s life stage often determines what is of greater financial priority,” says FCU personal account manager Katryna Lawry. “A young family starting out may be looking at saving for a house in the future, but retirement planning may not be a priority at the present time.” With a young family, life insurance is something that should be taken into consideration. This is an example where the FCU team utilizes the close relationship shared with Westview Agencies team members; leveraging the
expertise they have to find the best options for clients when it comes to their life insurance needs. “We may work in separate offices but the philosophy and approach we take with our members and clients is the same,” says Katryna. “We go through the financial foundation checklist to assist us and them, to understand their financial goals,” explains Randall Smisko, life insurance agent at Westview Agencies. “Once we understand their goals we are able to draft a financial blueprint to help them get there.” Whether people are just starting out or already retired, the wealth management team inv ites them to come in and have their financial foundation checked. “You may discover that it is solid, but perhaps there are a few areas you can build upon,” says Barbara C o o p e r, i n v e s t m e n t specia list at West v iew Agencies. “Sitting down with one of us can help determine where clients are at and help them going forward financially,” adds Randall. “We want to see our clients be successful and do well. The financial blueprint is a tool we use to help make that happen.” During volatile times, many people have questions and feelings of uncertainty when it comes to their finances. portant for everyone. The wealth management team will host a seminar on Tuesday, February 2, from 6:30-8:30 pm at Vancouver Island University, featuring a representative from NEI Funds (Northwest Funds and Ethical Funds) delivering a presentation about socially responsible investing. “This is an area that is gaining interest across the industry, and we felt it was important to highlight it, because it is not always just about what product you buy or invest in, but how your money is invested within that product too,” says Scott.
During the seminar, Scott will also present on a topic relevant to the season. “If someone has a question about RRSPs or taxfree savings accounts, they should come and listen to the reasons as to why they should be doing one or the other or perhaps even both,” says Scott. With the RRSP contribution deadline approaching, now is a perfect time for current and new clients to schedule a visit with a member of the team. “If people want to start the year off right, the first thing is recognizing what a professional can provide,” says Barbara. “They
should take action and make an appointment.” To spea k w ith a First Gr oup of C ompa n ie s wealth management team member, call First Credit Union at 604.485.6206 or Westview Agencies at 604.485.7931. to share his message with people, and he will work hard for it,” says Dowding. “He’s committed to his
message and that gives him a lot of endurance.” A local festival regular, i nclud i ng appea ra nces at Diversity Festival and Sunshine Music Festival, Twyford’s music is a clever mix of punk, hip-hop, folk and rock and roll. Always odd, and always awesome, a Little Pharmer show is never the same twice and inevitably includes a couple of unexpected surprises. “He’s very adventurous and totally free and he’s not trapped inside any boxes,”
says Dowding. “He’s very unguarded and he lets it all out. He’s a brilliant writer and he’s got some of the best lyrics that I’ve heard.” Little Pharmer’s lyrics are environmentally friendly and politically aware, but also humourous and witty, and Twyford has a stage presence to match. At one recent Sunday show at Red Lion, Twyford ended the set by doing a somersault off his chair and landing on his head. No encore needed!

For t he pa st severa l years, Cameron Tw yford a.k.a. Little Pharmer has simultaneously inspired and bewildered live music audiences with his selfdescribed “folk trash vegetable punk rock and roll.” Ta k i ng residence at W i ld w o o d’s Re d L ion Pub for a series of Sunday shows, Twyford has taken on the daunting task of performing for three full hours as a solo act, playing guitar and his handmade stomp box, a metal bin rigged with a foot pedal and the phrase “local farm rock” spray-painted on the front. Luckily, Twyford has a wealth of original material to draw on from a series of self-released and self-recorded albums, with help from Tom Dowding, owner of local recording studio The Music Room, who also plays in Twyford’s full band Little Pharmer and the Ditch Prescription. “He’s really passionate about what he writes about and he feels it’s important

Q. When I wrote my Will, I appointed my husband as my executor and left him my boat. We have since divorced but are on good terms, I still want him to be my executor and to have the boat; do I need to update my Will?
A. Yes, under the current Act, the provisions in your Will appointing your former spouse as your executor and leaving gifts to him will not be effective after your divorce. Once you are no longer considered spouses under the Act, the Will is read as though he died before you. This means that your secondary executor (if you named one) will be appointed in your former spouse’s place and the boat will pass on to a secondary beneficiary or fall into the residue of your estate. If you have had any major changes in your life since you wrote your Will, please contact our office to update your estate plan.

Florence Lillian Willes May 14, 1927 - January 3, 2016
Flo passed away suddenly after a brief illness. In her later years she was happy spending time with friends, her cats and knitting. Flo was born in Vancouver and worked at Safeway before moving to Texada at the age of 28. She started a clothing store called The Fashion Room and for many years supplied Texada women with the latest fashions. Flo then worked as a home support aid until her retirement. Flo was a faithful member of the United Church and a dedicated volunteer for many community causes. She served as secretary-treasure of the Van Anda TV Association for 40 years. Flo was a kind and generous person and will forever have a special place in our hearts. The family would like to thank Dr. Black and nurses at Texada Island Health Centre and Intensive Care Unit doctors and nurses at Powell River General Hospital. A celebration of life will be held at Texada Island United Church Saturday, February 13 at 1 pm.

January 20, 1943 - January 17, 2016 With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the family announces the passing of Iain’s dear wife and loving mother of Brian (Beth), Julie (Cody) and grandsons Scott and Jordie. Irene was predeceased by grandson Cameron James. Surviving Irene in Scotland are sisters Gina (Jimmy) and Ethel, brother Richard (Christine), nieces Victoria (Craig), Wendy, Janet (Brian), Lesley (Michael), Karen (Douglas), Fiona, and Pamela (Sean) and nephews Iain (Jennifer) and Andrew (Cheryl). Irene and Iain were married in 1961 and arrived in Canada (Ladysmith) in 1968. They moved to Powell River in 1970. Irene started working at Woolworth’s in 1973, then Woolco, before retiring from Walmart in 2007. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Ladies Club for more than 40 years, a three-time champion with Powell River Dart Association and enjoyed playing golf at Nootka Dunes Golf Club and Myrtle Point Golf Club. Far surpassing Irene’s love for knitting, walking, muffins and BBC-TV shows was her love and passion for her family, in particular her grandsons. The family would like to express its gratitude to Dr. Halvorson, Dr. Takhar and Powell River General Hospital emergency room staff Joanna, Steve and Keith for their strenuous efforts in trying to keep Irene with us. A celebration of Irene’s life will be held at Carlson Community Club on Saturday, January 30 at 1 pm.

Notice: Water Main Flushing The Operational Services Department advises residents that city crews will be flushing water mains throughout the city for approximately three weeks beginning January 20, 2016, to remove sediment that gradually deposits in the pipes. Temporary discoloration of water and/or water pressure fluctuation may occur during flushing. This discoloration does not pose a health hazard. If you experience discolored water, you can clear your water lines by simply turning on the cold water tap in your laundry tub, or an outside tap, until the water is running clear. The city recommends that you refrain from doing laundry if you notice the flushing crews flowing hydrants in your immediate area during this period. Upon request, the city will provide advance warning of flushing in your vicinity for establishments or people with special requirements for water clarity. Contact the waterworks supervisor at 604. 485.8642. City of Powell River will take all precautions to protect the environment and maintain water quality during water main flushing; however, the city cannot accept any responsibility for damage caused by low water pressure or the use of discolored water. Therefore, the city advises consumers to be on the alert for reduced water pressure and/or temporary discoloration of water.
