Two recent awards are cause for celebration and excitement among students, staff and parish education committee (PEC) members at Assumption School. First, Powell River Community Forest (PRCF) has awarded the independent school of approximately 200 students a grant to upgrade its soccer field and playground. “Our current field is essentially shot; the structure has basically collapsed,” explains Jamie Kelly, PEC maintenance representative. “It’s unusable for any activity other than the odd kid running around.” Specifics of the PRCF grant dictate that projects must improve facilities in the community and allow for public access, says Jamie. Providing another field for use by Powell River Youth Soccer Association was pivotal in Assumption receiving the grant. “We want to have youth soccer using our field again,” says Jamie, “and any other kids who want to use it.” The PEC is planning for the current field to be removed over a period of two months and to have new turf established in time for light use in September and regular usage by next winter. “We hope to break ground the first day school is out,” added Jamie. As for the new playground, it will feature more of a natural park than the traditional model. “We have an old playground infrastructure, much of it needs replacing,” says Jamie. A slide on a slope surrounded by rock gardens with interactive, moving parts such as landscape puzzles and chalkboards will be incorporated into the design. “We’ll include some of the older items that can still be used,” says Jamie. “We still want kids to use their muscles by swinging and climbing.”

Field of play Members of the Assumption family are excited about planned upgrades at the school, including [back row from left] Rosalyn Culos, parent-teacher association; Jamie Kelly, parish education committee; students Lok Wing Wong, 12, Sarah Schweitzer, 13, and Mia Woodward, 12; Dean Thorsell, physical education teacher; Mimi Richardson, principal; and students [front row from left] Chase Colquhoun, 13, and Ashton Anderson-Kelly, 12.

As with the soccer field, the playground will be open to the public when school is not in session. The second round of good news arrived in late 2015. Coles the Book People had adopted Assumption earlier in the year for Indigo’s annual Adopt a School program, which aims to rejuvenate elementary-school libraries across Canada. Prior to Christmas, Assumption was informed it had placed second in BC, resulting in an award of $12,788.69. “A lot of the parishioners and parents supported us by buying books and voting online and instore,” says Ann Nadalini, PEC marketing representative. “It was a huge deal for us.” “We were competing against big areas,” added Jamie. “There were hundreds of schools involved.” Several weeks later, Indigo gifted the school with an additional $5,000. Staff and library volunteers are hard at work purchasing

resources through Coles for the school library and classrooms. “The school is immensely grateful to Sheila Denholm and her team at Coles for choosing our school to benefit from this amazing program, and to all the people in our extended Assumption family for voting and donating,” says parent-teacher association president Lindsay Zakkour. Assumption School promotes excellence in mind, body and spirit to all students, kindergarten through grade nine. The school’s vision is: “We strive to be a warm, welcoming, Christ-centred family where all will grow in faith, love and knowledge.” Peer tutoring offers opportunities for older students to develop mentorship skills by working with young learners. “We have a lot of kids that finish at Assumption and end up being leadership students at Brooks,” says Ann. “That’s a real positive.”

Although a Catholic Christian school, children of all denominations are welcome. Teachers follow BC’s curriculum in small classes averaging 20 students each. Preparing for Adolescence: Human Growth and Sexuality, is being offered to parents again this year. The parent-support meeting takes place 7-9 pm in Parish Hall on Wednesday, March 2. Presenters will empower parents with practical suggestions, resource material and a plan of action to encourage good communication with their children. Also, registration is now open for the school year starting in September 2016. Interested parents are invited to drop by the school at 7091 Glacier Street, call 604.485.9894, or visit assumpschool.com for more information.

STARMAN: AN EVENING OF DAVID BOWIE SONGS When: 7 pm, Saturday, February 6 Where: Evergreen Theatre at Powell River Recreation Complex Price: $25 Info: acousticstarman.com

“We’ve been rehearsing our faces off for months to get the songs down,” says Hurrie. Each performer picked a few Bowie songs each. The group of musicians will be performing in Campbell River Friday, then in Powell River the night after. The hope is the show will even-

tually tour Canada, says Hurrie. “I’m sure the big fans of Bowie will say that we should have done certain songs, but I think they will get a very fair representation of his catalog,” he says. The musicians in the show have been inspired and pushed to the limits by Bowies’ material, says Hurrie, including some recently added songs from Blackstar, an album released mere days after Bowie’s death. “It’s been very intense. Bowie’s music is very complex, challenging music,” says Hurrie, “and it’s fair to say it’s been challenging for all of us. It’s good to work outside your comfort zone now and then.”

David Bowie’s recent death has put a whole new spin and tone on Starman: An Evening of David Bowie Songs, Saturday night at Evergreen Theatre, Powell River Recreation Complex.

A live music celebration of the late David Bowie on Saturday night will have deep meaning to the musicians involved. Months in the making, Starman: An Evening of David Bowie Songs, took on more significance, says organizer Sam Hurrie, when those performing in the show learned of the music icon’s death on January 10 at the age of 69. “We’re still in shock about it, and the irony of it hasn’t escaped any of us. It’s added a whole new level of intensity to the show,” says Hurrie. “There was a big emotional shift with everybody in the show when he died. Just the fact that he’s so iconic, and you didn’t truly realize it until after he died.” The multi-performer live music event was the idea of Vancouver Island MusicFest producer Doug Cox, who approached Hurrie, a longtime blues musician, about co-producing a large-theatre-style tribute to Bowie. Featuring Hurrie and Cox, along with Juno Award winner Helen Austin, Shaun Verrault of Wide Mouth Mason, Linda McRae, Robin Layne and Rick May, the show will run through Bowie’s more than fivedecade career.

THE LAW CORNER Q: I separated from my spouse and my 12-year-old child wants to live with me. I’ve heard 12-year-olds can make their own decisions. A: In family law there is no specified age when a child can make decisions affecting custody, access, or guardianship. A court may consider the views of the child, if appropriate, but that is only one of several factors. If you are separating from your spouse, you should obtain legal advice about the children. Please contact our office so that we may discuss this further.

Your will is the last statement you will ever make. With the help of a financial advisor you can benefit from estate planning that reflects your values. Ask about naming a charity as a beneficiary on your RRSP or as a secondary beneficiary on your life insurance; including charitable gifts in your will; completing an estate plan that reduces taxes and fees.
