Powell River Health-Care Auxiliary Economy Shop makes a move Powel l R iver Hea lt h-Ca re Auxiliary Economy Shop (PRHCA) opened its doors at a new location on Tuesday, February 9. Totalling 6,550 square feet, the new retail store at 6-7030 Alberni Street in Westview Plaza is 25 per cent larger than the old venue, allowing for a greater amount of merchandise to be on display. It also provides more workspace for the 120 store volunteers who cover two shifts per day, five days a week. “We’re modernizing,” says Ian Burke, president of PRHCA. “It’s newer, brighter and cleaner.” New, convenient options for customers include acceptance of furniture donations and debit machines for purchases. Previously, cash has been the only accepted form of payment. “We’ve never had a debit/interact-card point of sale,” says Liz Craven, a PRHCA director and 21-year volunteer at the shop. “It might not be ready right away, but we hope to have them as soon as possible.” A grand opening from 10 am-4 pm on Saturday, February 20, will feature special sales, free draws, balloons and other surprises currently being planned. Most of the inventory has already been moved into the new location. “Anything left over that we can’t take to the new store will be sold in the old space,” says Lorraine Stokes, shop co-manager and PRHCA secretary. The clearance sale, next door to the new shop, takes place Saturday, February 20, and Monday, February 22, through Friday, February 26, from 10 am-4 pm each day. Since opening at Westview Plaza in 1993, the shop has generated more than $5 million for distribution in the community. Originally called Women’s Auxiliary when it was formed as a non-profit organization in 1945, its name was

changed to Powell River Hospital Auxiliary in 1967, and then became PRHCA in 2003. “Overall, it’s probably close to $6.5 million over 70 years,” says Ian. “In the old days it was a few dollars at a time, to the hospital, when the auxiliary was operating a gift shop in the hospital and a small thrift store.” In 2003, a constitutional change within PRHCA allowed for donations to be made throughout the Powell River area. In 2012, Willingdon Creek Village received the largest single donation of $877,460. Funds were directed toward outfitting the building with equipment, beds, tables, chairs and televisions. Other organizations receiving support include Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association, Mea ls on W heels, Padd l i ng for Life, Texada Island Health Centre, Powell River Search and Rescue, Powell River Mobility Opportunities Society and Powell

River Action Centre Food Bank. “The funds we raise support the community now, not just the hospital,” says Lorraine. “That’s why people want to come and help. All our members are non-paid volunteers; every cent goes back into the community.” PRHCA provides complimentary television service to all patients in the hospital. Along with operating the economy shop, PRHCA provides staffing for a hospital gift shop and Red Cross Loan Cupboard. It also operates Candy Striper/Cadet programs and a patient escort service, which provides transportation within the hospital, as well as mail, earphone, water and flower deliveries. Volunteers also restock and refresh magazines in all hospital waiting areas once per week and the handcrafters crew knit, crochet, sew and quilt items to sell in the gift shop, which also has a vast array of other new products for sale.

“Our organization has 228 members right now,” says Ian. “We are always recruiting, because people get sick or go on holidays.” Volunteers come from all walks of life. Everyone is welcome to become a member. “There was a misconception for a long time that you had to be involved in the medical profession, belong to certain churches or be a certain age,” explains Liz. “Anyone can join, it’s just a bunch of people working together for health care.” People are encouraged to visit the economy shop to apply. An application form is also available online and at the hospital gift shop. For more information about PRHCA or the Economy Shop, call 604.485.0110, go to prhealthcareaux.ca, or like the organization on Facebook.

says he has a good following there. “Last year we had to set up tables on the dance floor because there were so many people coming in. We used every chair we had in the legion.” Thomson was born and raised in Scotland and came over to Canada in 1968 in his early 20s, later moving to Powell River in 1971. After his retirement, he spent some time in Sechelt, but ended up back in the area again. “I got this accent in Cranberry, I think,” he jokes. In an effort to dress up the legion for his show, Thomson is setting up a stage and will also have lights and night-

countryman Billy Connolly and some funny stories sprinkled throughout the performance. “It’s a good, fun night; a n i c e e v e n i n g ,” s a y s Thomson. “And it’s only $10. Where are you going to get real good entertainment for that?”

W hen singer Jim Thomson hits the stage at Royal Canadian Legion Saturday night, waves of nostalgia will hit the audience, and hopefully waves of laughter as well. The local singer, a longtime performer known for his Elvis Presley tributes, has put together a solo show featuring hits from the ’50s and ’60s, including Buddy Holly, Neil Diamond, Cliff Richard and the aforementioned Elvis, as well as Scottish folk songs, stories and jokes. “As soon as people start to hear some of the songs they go, ‘Wow, I haven’t heard that in years.’ It all goes over well; it’s very well received, otherwise I wouldn’t do it,” laughs Thomson. “You only do the things that work.” Thomson did a similar show last year and says the legion was “jam-packed.” He anticipates an even better turnout this year and

1105 Obituaries

Ryder Gordon Edward Hayes May 7, 1993 - January 30, 2016 Ryder passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, January 30. He was predeceased by his dad Gary in 2009 and is survived by his mom Marci and two younger brothers Levi and Griffin. Ryder will be lovingly remembered by his grandfather Gordon Hayes; aunts and uncles Cheryl and Randy Moore, Les and Michele Baloun, Keith and Pat Hayes, Mike Hayes and Diana and Grant Rogers; cousins Meghan, Ethan, Liam, Aidan, Kristen, Stephanie, Layla, Sophia, Lee, Amanda and Bryce; and two very close cousins Tyler and Kelsey McLeod. A service will be announced at a later date. You are my sunshine...

Maureen Grace Valentine (Welsh) September 4, 1955 January 8, 2016

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandma, aunt and friend Maureen. She was born in Powell River and grew up on Joyce Avenue. From a very young age, Maureen loved horses and spent time walking up to Wildwood to ride and care for them and then walked all the way back to Westview. She spent many years involved with Powell River Trail Riders Club and had a great love of animals. Maureen would always help someone in need, lend an ear and give good advice. She worked in a shelter for women and children on the coast and more recently worked as a care aid for home support and then as a home-support scheduler in Powell River. She was a survivor and a fighter, surviving two battles with breast cancer. We lost her so suddenly, but we will always remember her laugh, her caring nature and her sense of humour and wit. Maureen was predeceased by her parents Mary and Thomas Welsh and her brother Richard Welsh. She leaves behind her daughter Melanie Valentine, son Richard (Sara) Valentine and grandchildren “Grandma’s little angels” Xander, Mavrick and Bryce, brother Robert Welsh, numerous nieces and nephews and her many friends. Also left behind are Maureen’s little Jack Russell Terrier (Axle) and the horse (Kas) she shared with her daughter. A celebration of life will be held at Carlson Community Club on Saturday, February 20, at 1:30 pm.

Love you, miss you, and you’ll forever be in our hearts and memories, Mom.

Douglas Theodore Talbot It is with sad hearts we announce the passing of Doug. He was born in the Lower Mainland on August 27, 1960, and moved to Powell River at the age of 15. Doug graduated from Max Cameron Secondary School in 1979 and returned to the Lower Mainland. He suffered a brain injury as the result of a motor vehicle accident in 1988 and spent years recovering. Doug moved to Texada in 2012, took up residence at the hotel and was a permanent fixture there. Very much a social person, Doug enjoyed interacting with the patrons. His favourite expression was “excuse me...” at which the standard response he expected was that there was no excuse for him. Doug was diagnosed with lung cancer in November, and after a short but aggressive bout, succumbed on January 24, 2016. There will be a celebration of life on Monday, February 29 (because it is a leap year and Doug would have liked that), at Royal Canadian Legion Texada Branch 232, from 2-5 pm.

Donna Alexander

September 13, 1960 - December 28, 2015 With great sadness we say goodbye to our mother, daughter, sister, nanna, aunt and friend. Donna Alexander was taken from us way too soon, after a short threemonth battle with esophageal cancer. She passed away peacefully with her sister Val McNutt and brother-in-law Phil McNutt by her side at Nanaimo General Hospital. Donna leaves behind her parents Lois (Ian) MacLean and Neil MacLean, sisters Val (Phil) McNutt, Cindy (Paul) Petroczi, Debbie MacLean (Rod Dillman) and Cathy MacLean, children Ryan (Kaity) Alexander and Christina (Mitchell) Glessing, her beloved grandbabies Taylor and Jaxon Glessing, as well as many nieces and nephews. Donna was loved by many in her community, having met many friends through her job working for City of Powell River for many years. Through her battle she truly appreciated all the love and respect everyone showed her. Thank you to everyone who was able to visit her and for all the kind messages sent; it meant the world to her. We will miss you forever, Donna. There is now a hole in our hearts, once filled with joy of having you in our lives. Your presence we miss, your memories we treasure, loving you always, forgetting you never. Donna’s service will be Saturday, February 13, at 1 pm at Dwight Hall. Sometimes your heart needs more time to accept what your mind already knows.

In loving memory of

Mary Engram May 4, 1950 February 15, 2015 Sadly missed, never forgotten.
