First Credit Union president and CEO cites collective goals First Credit Union president and chief executive officer Dave Craigen is taking a recent award recognition as a sign that the organization’s focus on creating a culture that includes continuous learning, leadership development and employee recognition has been successful. Dave was the recipient of the 2015 employer of the year award at Powell River Chamber of Commerce’s Horizon Business Awards on Saturday, February 6. “I am very honoured,” says Dave, “however the recognition isn’t mine alone; it’s really a shared success.” Dave credits the board of directors, management team, and all employees for embracing First’s philosophy of developing leadership in everyone. “Our leadership program is something that we have implemented over the last five years,” says Dave. “It’s not about one individual, or a group, it’s about everybody doing their part to serve the member-clients, the community and each other.” Dave, who is born and raised in Powell River, has been with First for more than 20 years after returning with his family to his hometown. Being away for 14 years to get his start in business, Dave says one thing, above all else, brought him back home. “It’s the people. We have family and connections in Powell River and we wanted to come back and raise our family here,” says Dave. “Being part of First Credit Union for over two decades has been extremely rewarding; there are so many great memories and achievements to reflect upon.” First Credit Union has grown significantly under his leadership, and now includes nine credit union and insurance branches in six communities

Group effort Dave Craigen [centre], First Credit Union chief executive officer and recipient of the 2015 Chamber of Commerce employer of the year, is joined by employees [left to right] Greg Babcock, First Insurance manager, Ashley Panek, financial services representative, Lorraine Allman, retail/credit manager and Texada Island branch manager, and Lori Casparie, accounting clerk.

and over 140 employees serving 10,000 members and 40,000 insurance customers. “The purpose of the organization is to serve the well-being of our members and clients and make meaningful community impact,” says Dave. “We are all very proud to work for an organization that has such a meaningful purpose and it’s a big part of our employee engagement and retention.” A successful, organizationwide Community Impact Day on October 8 enabled all First team members to get involved with their communities by volunteering with local non-profit societies. “Our employees love supporting and being part of the communities we serve,” says Dave. A recent employee-engagement survey at First garnered impressive results. “We are proud of our scores in these surveys, because they’re an-

other indication that our staff are happy and proud to work for our organization,” says Craigen. First Credit Union hires approximately 15 people per year. “Really, we look for people who share our values and care deeply about community and the customers they serve,” says Dave. “Our employees tend to stay with us for a long time, so it’s important that we find people who are the right fit for the organization.” Dave spends a lot of time visiting the different branches of First, making sure he knows all of the employees by name. As an employer, he hopes his team members see him as a strong communicator. “I hope that they would say that I am open. I tell them what I am thinking,” says Dave. Along with a competitive compensation package, some of the benefits offered to employees at First include professional devel-

opment, employer-paid training, an education-reimbursement program, internal young-leaders program and Community Impact Day. Ultimately, Dave sees the employer of the year award as confirmation that the people who work for the organization are happy. “The recognition is wonderful, but I honestly don’t believe this award is mine individually. It’s collective,” says Dave. “There has to be a name attached to the award, but I still see it as First Credit Union’s award. I’m proud to be a part of it, but I accept it on behalf of everybody, because it’s not me; it’s all of us.” Those interested in joining the First Group of Companies can visit the career page at firstcu.ca for more information.

called The Holy Modal Rounders and was inspired to start writing his own music. “They are a couple of super psyched-out hippy guys who got interested in traditional folk music and they just put a real odd spin on it,” says Smith. “I

was also listening to a lot of country, and I just started playing myself. I didn’t know how to compose music or anything, but on an accordion it’s really easy.” The result was music that was entirely Smith’s own, a product of a do-it-yourself ethic rooted in the punk rock scene. “It is different and it is a little unpredictable,” says Smith. “It’s interesting and cerebrally stimulating, and it’s emotional.” On this particular minitour of Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, Smith is bringing his backing band, bearing the oddball name the Ape Shit

Army. Featuring guitarist Dan Weisenberger, bassist Jody Johnson and drummer Rad Juli, Smith says the band wasn’t properly named to begin with and ran through a string of monikers, including the Intoxicated Rats, Dad Juice and Man Smell. “One of the songs has the words ‘ape-shit army’ in it and they all yell it out, so my wife suggested we use that,” explains Smith. “Nothing else surfaced, so we went with Ape Shit Army and then I found a whole trove of Planet of the Apes stuff online that I never knew existed. There’s a lot of stuff on the internet!”

For the past year nonprofit society The Music Revolution has brought challenging musical acts to Powell River as part of its mandate to engage the local music scene. Victoria songwriter and accordion player David P. Smith could be the society’s oddest booking to date, playing a style of music that is very difficult to describe, even for the artist himself. “I’m a writer who plays music. My musical influences are rooted in blues and roots music, but it’s about deconstructing and reconstructing those styles, and that describes what we do musically. And, lyrically, yeah… I’m not that great at describing our music either,” laughs Smith. Smith didn’t begin playing in bands until he was in his 30s when a friend gave him an accordion that he was messing around on. Then, a few years ago, he heard an American group

Experts provide workplace bullying solutions Advocates for workplace safety create comfortable space for employees JASON SCHREURS

publisher@prpeak.com Bu l l y i ng i sn’t ju s t a pr oblem i n schoolyards. A provincial advocate for bully-free workplaces has been educating the public about job-site harassment since legislation passed in 2013 to include bullying

in WorkSafeBC’s occupation health and safety policies. Robyn Durling, spokesperson for BullyFreeBC Society, says the non-profit agency is lobbying government and informing BC workers about problems with workplace harassment and bullying, offering remedies and solutions. Durling said under the new legislation, WorkSafeBC recognizes the emotional impact workplace bullying can have on employees, resulting in a course of action for those affected by the problem. “WorkSafe’s job is to prevent workplace injury, so what they are looking at now is working to prevent mental disorders, and treating those disorders as workplace injuries that resulted from harassment or

bullying,” said Durling. Durling said employees being bullied at work would need to have a psychiatric evaluation done by a psychiatrist or psychologist for their claim. “If you could prove you have a mental disorder, such as anxiety disorder or depression, and it came about as a workplace stressor, including bullying or harassment, then you could have a potential claim with WorksafeBC,” said Durling. While there are extreme cases where employees are so badly bullied at work that they no longer feel safe or mentally sound, many subtle versions of workplace bullying happen every day. According to Sandra McDowell, a leadership-training coach and vice-president

of communications and culture at First Credit Union, her place of employment undertook appropriate steps to create a safer workplace when the anti-bullying legislation came in three years ago. McDowell recommends a good way for employers and leaders within an organization to keep themselves in check is to be aware of daily moods and stressors. “It’s centred around emotional intelligence, so people have to take responsibility for their moods and how they treat others, and that includes your colleagues as well as your customers,” said McDowell. “So, it’s really about self-awareness.” McDowell said there are a variety of ways professionals can take care of themselves, including exercise, sleep and

Speaking up most important 6« BULLYING diet, and that moods spreading through a workplace come from the leadership down. “Your moods are contagious, and particularly negative moods are more contagious, and people in the workplace are more sensitive to those,” she said. “If someone shows up to work and brings their bad energy with them, we all absorb that much more readily than we do happy contagions.” McDowell said the most important thing a person being bullied in their workplace can do is to speak up about it. “We’ve done a lot of training around the concept of difficult conversations, and it takes a lot of courage to have those conversations,” she said. “Nobody likes them, but there are ways to structure conversations that allow you to take care of yourself.” McDowell said establishing boundaries is helpful in protecting against workplace bullying, and if that doesn’t work she advised taking the problem to someone else within an organi-

zation that can advocate on the affected person’s behalf. “In the training that we do with all employees, it’s around having that courage to step up. There are mottos and simple language that you can use, where you can say, ‘This is the situation in this snapshot of time, this is the impact it’s having on me and my request is this.’ It’s very basic, but it’s powerful to do that,” said McDowell, “but first of all you need to have the courage and the support.” Workplaces can take a variety of positive steps to make it more comfortable for all employees, but ultimately it’s about modelled good behaviour from those in leadership roles. “There’s a quote that I love that says, ‘Any workplace culture is defined by the worst behaviour a leader will tolerate,’” said McDowell, “because if a leader doesn’t take responsibility for bad behaviour, then it’s going to keep happening.” Part of the work BullyFreeBC does, according to Durling, is explaining to workers their rights under BC Employment

Law and providing potential remedies for situations of extreme harassment or bullying in the workplace. “Under employment law an employer has a duty to provide

a harassment-free workplace, so that exists already. If that isn’t adhered to, there are a variety of legal remedies,” explained Durling. “However, lower-level income-makers may not have

clusion, spreading rumours, gossip and meanspirited notes. • Verbal: name calling, verbal threats, mocking and insulting. • Cyber: verbal and relational bullying that takes place online. Also includes the sharing of private photos, emails and information without permission and sending or posting such things using the victim’s name. Physical and cyber bullying are fairly easy to identify because they are concrete actions. But what about social bullying? Psychologists put it this way: Teasing involves words or non-verbal actions that are meant to be playful and funny. Sometimes these are an irritation to the person on the receiving end, who perceives them as neither fun nor amusing. Bullying is a recurring and persistent behaviour by one or more children that is motivated by the intent to hurt another child emotionally, physically or socially. When it comes to reporting bullying to the authorities, it’s helpful to talk about what happened with a trusted adult. If the incident was threatening to the safety of the victim, either socially, physically or emotionally, then it needs to be reported.

John Gavin Stephen November 21, 1931 - February 6, 2016 Johnny fought one hell of a fight these past few months, but lost the battle Saturday, February 6. He is survived by his wife Kitty, brother George Stephen (Bonnie), sister Annabelle Arkinstall (Jim), daughters Sherry Psaila (Ray) and Wendy Hatt (Don), son Ken Stephen (Jayne), grandchildren Christian Hatt (Tanya), Courtenay Leitch (Ian), and John Macdonald and great-grandchildren Ricci and Carson Leitch and Morgan and Jordyn Hatt (mother Michelle). Wayne Thomas Virtue Wayne Thomas Virtue passed away on February 13, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox. He was born in Saskatchewan in 1946 but spent almost all his life on the West Coast. He was passionate about many things. When he lived in Powell River he was a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years. He was the one who climbed in the cars to help people who were trapped. When he moved to Courtenay he became an avid motorcycle rider. At one time he had three motorcycles and took turns riding each of them. Most days he enjoyed going to the “Dub” to meet up with riding groups to talk mostly motorcycles. Wayne also worked hard for several years for the “Ride for Dad”. His dedication and good nature made him a great ambassador for the cause. He was also a dedicated shopper for Compassionate Resource Warehouse and with his wife was able to send truckloads of goods to people in the world who have absolutely nothing. He loved to go to Texas to all the Harley dealerships, gun shows, comedy places and even to hockey and baseball games. He enjoyed the different things about Dallas and loved spending time with his adopted daughter. He loved life and had an out-of-the-box sense of humor. We will all remember his contagious laugh, great smile, his compassion for others and his great love of the open road. Along with being a member of SCRC, he always supported other clubs in their charity causes. He will be missed by his family and all his riding brothers and sister. He is survived by his wife, Naida Panchishin, son Matthew and daughter-in-law Alison, his youngest son, Stewart, daughter Laura-May, adopted daughter Stephanie Panchishin and brother, Gary and sister-inlaw Meridith. A viewing will be at Piercy’s Funeral Home, 440 England Avenue Courtenay, on Saturday, February 20 from 3– 5 pm.

1100 In Memoriam

Terry Ann Young April 19, 1944 – January15, 2016.

Our family lost a truly exceptional person when Terry left us in the late afternoon of Friday, 15 January, after a short but valiant battle with a very aggressive cancer. She was my college sweetheart, best friend and loving wife for fifty years; she was also a wonderful, loving and generous mother, a loving motherin-law and a doting grandma to her beloved grandson, Andrew. Terry was an intelligent, fun, warm, gracious and kind person who cherished her extended family, her close friends and her Airedales. She enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends, good wine, her garden and greenhouse, the beach, the wind in her hair and sand in her shoes and her home south of Powell River above the beach at Black Point. Terry was born in Greenville Ohio, raised and educated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, and graduated from the University of New Mexico where she met her future husband, Brian. She taught in the Albuquerque school system and moved to Vancouver in 1969 to accept a teaching position at York House School. In 1973 she and Brian moved to Victoria where Jessica was born in 1975. After Jess was in grade school, Terry established her home-based historical research company and worked with lawyers and the provincial and federal governments until she retired to Powell River in 2011 to be near her daughter, son-in-law and grandson. Terry is survived by her husband Brian, daughter Jessica Taylor, son-in-law Adam Taylor, grandson Andrew Taylor, sister Beverly Bates, sisters-in-law, Christine Fisher, Valerie Griffith and Sonia Young, brother-in-law Ken Young, her favorite aunt Joan Coovert, her loving nieces and nephews and her close friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers-in-law Harold Fisher, John Griffith and Dick Bates. Special thanks to Dr. Morwood, Dr. May and Dr. Hoffert, as well as Bill T., MariAnn and Peter and her close friends for their cards, flowers and support. A potluck gathering for Terry will be held later in the spring or early summer. Date and venue to be announced. Condolences may be sent to the family via Stubberfield Funeral Home, stubberfieldfh.com and, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Powell River Branch of the BCSPCA. Terry is missed dearly and will never be forgotten. Although she won’t be behind the wheel of her old gold Volvo wagon anymore, wave if you see her old wagon on the road.

In loving memory of

Vito Vodola
