Ninth season of dance classes begin

SPONSORED CONTENT

Sheridan Dance Academy instills confidence in dancers With a new season approaching, new and returning students at Sheridan Dance Academy have opportunities to experience happiness and self-expression through a variety of programs. A nurturing environment enhances learning and provides dancers with a place to make new friends and evolve as performers and people. “More than half of our staff members are parents,” says Mariah Sheridan Runions, owner and director of the academy. “They understand how to care for a child and offer support when needed.” As one of two accredited dance instructors in Powell River, Mariah is ADAPT-certified in jazz and tap. She leads a group of teachers focused on instilling confidence in students and providing a positive atmosphere, allowing them to feel and express joy through performance. “Seeing the looks on their faces as they perform is amazing,” says Mariah. “A chance to shine on stage builds pride, confidence and a sense of self worth.” The academy opens for regular classes on Monday, September 12, with programs available for children ages 18 months up to adult. Toddler and preschool-age

classes include instruction on balance, coordination and interaction. A special one-day event on Friday, September 23, features a royal ball for those youngsters. “They will experience what it would be like at a royal ball and then perform at the end for their parents,” says Mariah. “Because they are so little, much of the focus is on the merriment of the occasion.” Later that day, a one-time-only rock star training class for ages six to 12 takes place. “If you ask my eight-year-old what she wants to be when she grows up, she will tell you she wants to be a rock star,” says Mariah. The rock star class offers a fun, enjoyable experience for children interested in learning more about the academy’s Showstopper Musical Theatre program, where dancers partake in singing, dancing and acting in action-packed classes. “It will give kids a taste of what our dance studio experience is all about,” says Mariah. “It’s on a professional development day, too, which will work well for people who need an option to keep their school-aged kids busy.” All students enrolled in musical theatre will be part of the academy’s holiday production,

All Aboard the Polar Express, premiering at Evergreen Theatre in December. In the New Year, students in all classes will focus on rehearsing for annual spring recitals to end the season. After debuting AcroDance last year, the popular class returns to the schedule with more age categories, taught once again by accredited AcroDance instructor Robin Behan. “Kids enjoyed it so much we’re expanding the program,” says Mariah. “We have classes for preschoolers, moms and babies, and sessions for all school-aged children.” Sheridan Dance Academy hosts Community Information and Registration Fair from 5-7:30 pm on Friday, September 9, with several organizations on hand to provide information to visitors. “Our goal is for people to be able to take care of all their fall registrations in one place,” says

Mariah. “Tables will be available to any groups wishing to join.” More information about the academy is available at sheridandanceacademy.ca or by calling 604.485.0023. “People are welcome to stop by the studio to see us as well,” says Mariah. The studio, located in unit 101 at Crossroads Village (behind Quality Foods), has an apparel

shop fully stocked with dance-related items, including bodysuits, leotards, tights and shoes for ballet, jazz and tap. Hours are 4-7 pm, Monday through Thursday.

The Arts Council Powell River festival fans gather each Labour Day weekend at Sunshine Music Festival, now in its 35th year.

Other musical genres represented at this year’s festival include Latin jazz, alternative pop, rock, blues, soul and gypsy. A handful of local artists round out the bill. “Female and male artists, young and young at heart from around the world, across the country and locally bring a wide range of diverse musical genres and styles,” says Mackle. “There is something for everyone.” Two free events will take place on Friday night; Victoria’s Chris Ho will present a songwriting workshop at Cranberry Community Hall from 2:30-4:30 pm and Sara Noni will perform at the Kelly Creek Garden Market at 5:30 pm. New initiatives at this year’s festival include a community music award, zero-waste program and information about the building of a permanent

stage for 2017’s festival, which will be made available to the community for events and celebrations through a Powell River Community Forest grant. “Like so much culture in Powell River, Sunshine Music Festival is powered by a broad group of volunteers who make it all happen,” says Mackle. “We salute you and invite others to join in this worthy task of community service.”

With the rush of festivals in Powell River this summer, some say we save the best for last. Taking place this weekend, Sunshine Music Festival brings together a diverse music lineup as well as arts and crafts, food vendors and a kids’ zone. “I invite music town Powell River to give the Sunshine Music Festival a fresh look,” says new artistic director Robert Mackle. “Over the past 35 years the festival has evolved from a folk music focus to grow to an expansive circle of music inclusiveness.” The strength of the festival lies in its humble roots, says Mackle. While the festival has expanded over the decades, it has not abandoned its original mission to bring the community together. “We have maintained our small, human scale with an intimate atmosphere in a gorgeous beach forest setting at Palm Beach Regional Park,” says Mackle. Highlights of this year’s lineup include the reggae/world music of Australia’s Toby Beard, the smooth vocal stylings of Matthew and Jill Barber, the soulful songwriting of Cree-Irish singer Iskwe and the accordion-powered, new-g y psy sounds of Jack Garton and his Demon Squadron.

Back to school

Other than recess and school supplies, my favourite part of back to school was the excitement of new projects. A model of a quasar from Styrofoam, a diorama for the book I was reading: I couldn’t wait. Part of the reason I loved these assignments was that I knew where to find good FOR YOUR resources. My mother was REFERENCE a school librarian, so it goes By Rebecca Burbank without saying that I had some spectacular support. I was lucky to have someone wander through the stacks at the library with me and help me sort through all of that information. This September when that first assignment comes home from school, know that you and your students have great support, too. Visit the Powell River Public Library and share your questions with us: we love to help. We are here for more than just your toughest questions, however. If you are searching for School District 47’s Read for the Top books, we have those, too. Or listen to a few of these titles over breakfast, or in the car, with an audiobook or eAudio. For our youngest patrons, the library’s Storytime with Deb is a great way to prepare children for kindergarten. Build up those literacy skills with songs, rhymes, puppets and stories. No matter which building we are in this fall, the library is here to support you.

THE LAW CORNER Q. Last year I appointed my grandson to be my power of attorney, now he’s having financial trouble and I’m worried that he isn’t very reliable and may not be acting in my best interests. What can I do? A. You may revoke your enduring Power of Attorney provided you are still capable of understanding the nature and consequences of doing so. You would need to make the revocation in writing and have your signature witnessed, and then give written notice to your grandson to let him know that he’s no longer your Power of Attorney. If you need to revoke your Power of Attorney, or if you have other estate planning needs, please contact my office.

CLASSIC CARS: More than 100 vintage and classic cars were on display on Thursday, August 25, at the Canadian Tire parking lot in conjunction with A&W Restaurant’s Burger to Beat MS day. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Friday, September 2, to Sunday, September 4 - Palm Beach Park TOBY BEARD

West Australian blues/roots/indi artist Toby is so much more than your average singer-songwriter. She powers through each live performance with her own lyrical talent and fierce, dynamic vocals, with audiences revelling in the genuine and honest songwriting and performance. Her compelling vocals and the way in which she captures her audience can’t be explained, but just needs to be heard and seen. Her live performance truly is a treat. Toby is passionate, raw, fun and powerful, with a mix of soul, blues, folk, rock and a splash of gypsy hick.

JASPER SASSAMAN - SILVER ATLAS

Silver Atlas plays alternative rock, a genre that has become an almost undefinable catch-all, referring to the punk/new-wave-rooted style that emerged in the 1980s and swept to popularity in the early to mid1990s. Jasper Sassaman, vocals/guitar, has his 18-year-old eyes set on Vancouver after graduating from Brooks Secondary School. Vocalist, guitarist and carpentry student Ben Wayne Kyle is uncertain about his future, but is also considering a move to Vancouver. In the fall, drummer Adam Robertson will attend VIU in Nanaimo to pursue a bachelor of arts in jazz studies.

LITTLE PHARMER

Little pharmer plays folk-trash-vegetable-punk rock and roll. His music is equally strange and friendly, like an electric apple pie. He has been called the Bard of Agriculture and indeed his colourful collection of songs informs, as well as it inspires. Little Pharmer’s theatrical songs address a vast array of bizarre and vital subjects, from the history of hemp to the future of logging. He playfully takes on Monsanto and lawn culture, pays homage to the inner city, medicinal plants, the child’s imagination, seed saving, soul saving. His music is appropriately intense and agile, shifting from quirky bluegrass to hip-hop to raw rock and roll.

NOTICE The law office of William E. Whyard Law Corporation is closing on September 30, 2016. After 34 years of practising law, I am really tired, so I need some time to heal. Although I am still a lawyer, I am going to use my membership in the Law Society of BC to try to improve things in the society. I am a friend of Myles Gray and I want to know what happened to him, so I am going to try to get someone to tell us what happened to Myles. As a current member of the Law Society, I am going to try to find some justice for Myles. ~Bill Whyard

Back to school: Zero-waste style 6 7

With school bells about to ring, so too are cash registers. Back-to-school specials tantalize shoppers into lastminute purchases in order for them to be stocked up in style. Inevitably, some new items need to be purchased. But just because the school year is new, it does not mean all purchases have to be. Here is our top 10 list of ways to start the academic year zero-waste style:

1

Shop at home. Raid your closets and dusty drawers. You may be more prepared for the new term than you think.

2

Start school early by learning how to fix a zipper, re-cover an old binder or speed up a sluggish computer.

3

Host a back-to-school clothing swap with friends. Swap out some of the unwanted items and accessories that reveal themselves during your closet raid. Add in a schoolsupply swap component as well.

PEAK WEEKENDER • SALUTE TO LABOUR DAY

Tattoos and other body modifications With a new school year rolling around, it is the time of year for new starts. This might be a good time to talk to your children about tattoos, piercings and other body modifications. Many children will be away from home for the first time and, for some, that freedom might lead to a desire to either ink something or poke a hole through it. What should they know about these procedures in order to make safe choices? Do you know anyone who does not have a tattoo? Today, what used to be the mark of a ruffian, seafarer or other troublemaker is a sign of self-identity or independence from “the pack.” Typically, a tattoo is created using a hand-held machine that acts much like a sewing machine, with one or more needles repeatedly piercing the skin. With every puncture, needles insert tiny ink droplets into the dermis, the second layer of skin below the epidermis.

HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet Another popular form of body modification is piercing, which can be done on almost any part of the body. Ears have long been an accepted location, but other areas pierced include the nose, tongue, eyebrows, navel, lips and even nipples and genitals. More dramatic modifications include using jewellery to stretch earlobes, implanting beads under the skin, scarring, branding and more. All offer a means of self-identification or differentiation. What all of these body

art projects have in common is an inherent risk to health. Breaking the skin introduces risks that would otherwise have been avoided. Fortunately, these risks can be managed by understanding the processes and dangers inherent to these body modifications. Skin-breaching introduces the chance of infection and other complications. Infections can be passed via improperly sterilized needles or piercing tools. If the equipment used to create a tattoo or piercing is contaminated with infected blood, there is a chance to contract any of a number of blood-borne diseases, including tetanus, HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Another risk is allergic reactions to dyes used in the tattoo. This can even occur years after receiving it. Tattooing can also lead to keloids, which are raised areas caused by overgrowth of scar tissue. Granulomas are unwelcome bumps under the skin that form around tattoo ink.

So, your kids have decided to go ahead with it. Good for them, but several factors should be considered. Start by being absolutely certain they want to do it, after all, tattoos are not easily removed. Choose a reputable tattooing studio that employs properly trained artists. Treat the process as you would any other medical procedure. The shop

should be as clean as a dentist’s office. Make sure the tattoo artist washes his or her hands and wears a fresh pair of protective gloves for each procedure. The equipment should be either single-use (as in needles) or sterilized in an autoclave (heat sterilization). Jewellery used in piercings should also be sterilized before insertion, just

like all the equipment. Tattoos and piercings are not for everyone, but for those who do choose body modifications, it is best to do so safely by being aware of the implicit risks. George Edwin Morcan April 6, 1938-August 4, 2016

A celebration of life for George will be held Saturday, September 10, with an open house at 3994 Joyce Avenue between 1 – 4 pm. Everyone welcome.

Liliana Gabriella Maria Bombardir July 20, 1923 - August 25, 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mom, nana and greatnana Liliana. She was born in Ravenna, Italy, and passed away in Powell River. Liliana was predeceased by her husband Tony in 2009. She is survived by her son Fabio (Barb), daughter Rita (Michael), grandchildren Pamela (Steve), Gregory (Rose), Adam and Amanda and great-granddaughter Olivia. Liliana enjoyed cooking special meals for her family. She passed on some of her recipes for Italian peaches, orange soup and lemon cake and taught Pamela to make the peaches. We wish to thank all the staff at Evergreen Care Unit for all their care and help with Liliana. Also, thanks to Dr. Andreae, the priest for his visits, and for the support from our family and friends. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal. God bless you, Mom. May you rest in peace.

Leslie Gerald Norman Leslie passed away August 19, 2016, at the age of 74. We would like to thank Dr Andreae and the fourth floor nursing staff at Powell River General Hospital for all their compassion and care in our time of need.

Jaques passed away peacefully in his sleep. He will be missed by his wife Claudette Sarrazin, daughter Roxanne (Lester) Boese, son Tommy and grandsons William and Brandon. A mass will be held Wednesday, September 7, at 7 pm at Church of the Assumption.

Spencer William Gledhill

It is with great sadness that Gordon's family announces his peaceful passing in Maple Ridge, BC, on August 16, 2016. Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Mary-Lou, children Deborah (Duane), Druscilla (Don) and Neil, sisters Joyous and Marie (Ben), brother Bill (Joan), stepchildren Rick (Lori) and Pamela (Joe) and grandchildren Jared, Kaitlyn, Alexandria, Shanda, Cale and Mason. Gordon is also survived by his nieces and nephews, many dear friends and by staff at Baillie House Residential Care in Maple Ridge. A celebration of Gordon's life will be held on Sunday, September 25, from 2 to 5 pm at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88, 12101-224 Street, Maple Ridge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Maple Ridge Foundation at rmhfoundation.com, “for the benefit of Baillie House,” or to a charity of your choice in Gordon's memory.

Following a fatal motorcycle accident in Lake Cowichan, Spence leaves behind his wife Leslie (MacNab) and stepson James Lockett, as well as his cherished daughters Kezia and Yemima Gledhill. Spence is survived by his mother Elizabeth Hammond, sister Alison Gledhill, father Dan Gledhill, brother Rod and sister Sam, plus many aunts, uncles and cousins. A true soldier in all manners of his life, this veteran served with 11 (Victoria) Service Battalion in the Canadian Armed Forces until 2005 when injuries from serving took their toll. Never one to give up, Spence earned his Master of Social Work degree in September 2013 and wanted to be a “change maker” for children and their families. He showed immense courage during a three-year battle with cancer and then dialysis for 18 months. Spence was remarkable as a young man, having sang with Powell River Boys Choir in the early 1980s; he loved performing with the choir at festivals in Powell River, Vancouver, United Kingdom and Mexico. In his teen years, Spence was a member of Royal Canadian Air Cadets, where he won an award as most promising new recruit. Education was important to Spence, as was surfing and making lifelong friends. Join us for Spence's Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 10, from 1-5 pm at the Ashton Armoury Junior Mess Hall, 724 Vanalman Avenue (at Glanford), Saanich, BC.

1972 - 2016

It is with shattered hearts we announce the passing of our beloved father, brother, uncle and grandpa. He passed with his four girls by his side after a short ba ttl e wi th i d i o p a thi c pulmonary fibrosis. Darrell is survived by his daughters Dionne (Clay) and Danielle (Brett), his sisters Carol (Steve) and Lisa (John), his niece Kristina and nephew Cole as well as two beautiful grandchildren and another on the way. He was endlessly accepting and understanding of all who crossed his path. He loved many and was loved by many. His heart was as big as his sense of humour; he never stopped making us laugh. Darrell left us with a lifetime of special memories, funny stories and silly jokes. A celebration of life will be held, Sunday, September 25 at noon at Westview Hotel. It will be open to anyone who wishes to pay their respects.

Jaques Leblanc

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donna on Friday, August 26, after a brief but courageous fight with cancer. She was born in Sussex, New Brunswick and moved to Powell River in 1986, where she met and married her husband. Donna was a devoted wife and loving mother who will be remembered by her husband and best friend of 22 years James, daughters Jaimee (Dean), Rebecca, Kelsea, Makayla, Shaya and Payton, son Hunter and stepdaughter, Noel. She also leaves behind her parents George and Laura Murphy, sisters Reba (Bruce), Cathy (Lloyd), Leanne (Brian) and Marjorie, brothers Ronnie (Maren) and Frank (Laura) and many extended family members, nieces, nephews and cousins. At Donna’s request there will be no service. A memorial tea will be held at a later date. Although she is gone from our sight, Donna will live on in the hearts of her husband and children and in those fortunate enough to know and love her.
