Growing garden gains greenhouse Powell River Brain Injury Society assists clients with multifaceted program healthy, organic, fresh vegetables, because living on a disability pension, they don’t have a lot of money for extras,” explains Debbie. Made possible through a grant from FortisBC, funds obtained will also be used to add a drip-water system to the garden. “We needed a g reenhouse and also wanted to eliminate a hose being dragged around; we’ve already had someone trip on it,” says Debbie. “The good folks at Mother Nature are going to instruct us on how to install it.” During its first year, the outdoor garden was mostly used for demonstration; how to grow, plant, weed and harvest. It did not produce enough for preserv-

ing. That all changed in year two. “Last year we had tomatoes and peppers in abundance, so we showed clients how to preserve,” says Debbie. Clients are instructed on canning techniques and make organically grown, fresh sauces. The large harvest of peppers allowed the society to also create its own hot sauces. “They were so popular here that people were saying you should sell it,” says Debbie. As part of the next phase of the program, which involves selling products in a retail space, the society plans to send a test batch of hot sauce to University of BC.

“If they say this is a good recipe, we’re going to bottle it and sell it,” says Debbie. As a result of the program, the society created the book Lettuce Share: Stories, Recipes, Odds and Sods. “It has recipes, gardening and life tips, people’s stories and photos taken by one of our clients,” says Debbie. “A nyone interested in a copy can call 604.485.6065.” Debbie learned about the Fortis grant a year ago from City of Powell River councillor Maggie Hathaway, which led to an application being submitted. “Fortis put out a ca ll through cit y councils across the province for project s to f u nd,” says

Volunteers from First Credit Union were also on hand to help out with the build. “Our clients made a bunch of food and we broke bread before we got to work; it was a real nice community day,” says Debbie. The society works w it h doctors, fa m i ly members, caregivers and friends to determine the steps that follow. For clients of Powell River Brain Injury Society, a new greenhouse recently added to its vegetable garden area is cause for excitement. The addition enhances the society’s nutrition, cooking and gardening program. “It is going to allow us to grow vegetables all winter, so we will be able to assist the clients with nutritional needs,” says Debbie Dee, the society’s executive director. “They are so excited, they can hardly wait to get in there.” Now in its third season, the program provides education and instruction on growing, preparing and preserving food. “We started the program because we thought it was important that clients get

Salt Spring Island artist Trinity Forbes creates vibrant soundscapes under the name Firewood Poetry. Forbes plays Red Lion Pub on Saturday with locals Texture & Light.

Firewood Poetry’s latest release is a three-song EP that came out in 2015, but Forbes is readying a new track called “Particles,” which she will play live at her Red Lion Pub performance Saturday night. “The song is about being present in your emotions and dreams, but also remembering the insignificance of all of our little dramas, and staying connected in that way,” says Forbes. “I believe in heartfelt presentation of art and self, and humility and love, so those things tend to come through in my music

in a strong way.” Sharing the stage with Forbes is Texture & Light, a local electronic dream rock two-piece that will be playing songs from its upcoming second album, Inner Space Odyssey.

Salt Spring Island musician Trinity Forbes, also known as Firewood Poetry, is excited to return to Powell River, a place she considers “amazing.” Forbes, who previously performed here at 2014’s Aurora Innovative Arts Festival, says Powell River reminds her of Salt Spring 15 years ago. “Powell River is this place that artists are migrating to, and it feels really vibrant,” says Forbes. “It’s a community that’s really embracing the arts and it’s able to support that. It feels like everything I remember growing up with on Salt Spring that I loved.” Forbes arranges sounds from nature, travel and her own instruments and then manipulates them digitally on a computer, and creates songs from there. The result is ethereal soundscapes created entirely by Forbes. “It’s incredible and I really enjoy it,” says Forbes, “but it’s also a lot of pres-

March 11, 1930 - June 15, 2016

Our father, Joe, passed away peacefully in his home after a brief battle with cancer. He was predeceased in 2011 by Margaret, his loving wife of 60 years, and by his brothers Walter, Alvin, Stanley, Michael (infant), Steve and Tony. Joe is survived by his sons Garry and Terry (Christine), daughters Lynda (Murray) and Laurie (Bruce), g r a n d c h i l d r e n Jennifer, Andrea (Michael), Kevin (Leanne), Laura (Mike), Cameron, Tiffany, Adam and Craig, great-grandsons Linden and Rylan, as well as his sisters Olga, Elizabeth, Nellie, Lee and Jane. Dad was born in Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan, and began his career as an orderly in Saskatchewan. In 1963, he accepted a job in Powell River and started working as an orderly in the hospital. He eventually switched his career to the maintenance department and retired after 30 years of service at the original Powell River Hospital. He was also an auxiliary member with the RCMP, an ambulance driver and had a few other part-time jobs that helped with raising his family. Everyone who knew our dad would have a story to tell. He was everything from a jokester to a gentle soul. He was a wonderful father, husband, grandpa and brother and a beloved brother-inlaw and uncle. All of us will miss him. The family would like to thank Dr. Andreae and the palliative care nurses for their kindness, compassion and attentive care of our father. At Joe’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory can be made to Powell River Hospital Foundation—information can be found at prhospitalfoundation.com—or a charity of your choice.

Steve A. Lister March 1960-June 2014 Steve, a wonderful loving brother, uncle and son. Two years since you’ve been gone. Two beautiful babies you will never meet. Two lovely weddings without you there to help us celebrate. For every happy moment there is sadness too, because you are not here. We miss your loving spirit, your smile and your humor. You loved all living things and we wonder if all the stray cats are still coming to your back door! A big hello to the guys in the hood and all your pals. Love from your family (all 28 of us). Always yours.

Please join us in honouring

Dorothy (Dot) Robertson February 4, 1928 - May 18, 2016

A private service will be held Saturday, July 2, at Woodland Cemetery at 1 pm. A celebration to honour Dorothy will follow at Royal Canadian Legion, 2611 Legion Road, Van Anda, also on July 2, at 2 pm. All who knew Dorothy are welcome to share stories, memories and laughter. Cremation was entrusted to Stubberfield Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Heart and Stroke Fund. Dorothy’s life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She is loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
