Target practice Celebrity axe throw kicks off Saturday at Powell River Logger Sports Over the next three days, athletes from around the world will descend upon Willingdon Beach to compete in a variety of events held during Powell River Loggers Sports. While professionals battle for cash prizes, several fun events will also take place, including a celebrity axe-throwing contest on the morning of Saturday, July 16. A field of eight contestants representing local businesses, organizations and media outlets will take aim at a 36-inch target using a double-bladed axe. Peak publisher/editor Jason S c h r e u r s r e pr e s ent s Pe a k Publishing, one of many sponsors rallying around the return of the iconic games after an 11-year hiatus. “When I first signed up for this, I imagined throwing tiny hatchets. I had no idea I would be hurling a huge, razor-sharp axe,” says Schreurs, who will be throwing an axe for the first time. “I’m more worried about severing my spine on the backswing than hitting the targets.” First Credit Union president and chief executive officer Dave Craigen has previous experience in the competition, having been “volun-told to do it” by organizer Bob Marquis on more than one occasion at previous logger sports shows. “I think I did okay at one or two of them,” says Craigen, who, when asked about nerves affecting his throwing in front of a crowd, adds, “look out beer gardens.” Although he has not taken part in an event like this before,
[From left] Tourism Powell River executive director Paul Kamon, Peak publisher/editor Jason Schreurs, First Credit Union president and chief executive officer Dave Craigen and Powell River Logger Sports organizer Bob Marquis.
Tourism Powell River exective director Paul Kamon has been practising at home with his own axe and says he feels no pressure competing in front of a throng of people at the newly named Loggers Memorial Bowl amphitheatre. He also fully expects to win in his debut. “Every year for the last three years I have been chopping two cords of prime Powell River Douglas fir in preparation for the day when I would be asked to join a celebrity axe-throwing competition,” says Kamon. “I intend to
win and bring home the glory to my neighbourhood of Westview; leather gauntlet thrown on the ground.” Completing the field are a mix of first-timers and former contestants including The Old Courthouse Inn’s JP Brosseau, Sun FM’s Bobby Fields, Powell River-Sunshine Coast ML A Nicolas Simons, CJMP Radio’s Mel Edgar and Powell River Living’s Isabelle Southcott. After an elimination round the top four celebrities then advance to a final round to determine
the champion. In sizing up the competition, Craigen says that since the field is heavily laden with media types, he sees them all as threats “all the time.” As for the others, Craigen suggests Brosseau has an advantage over the field. “JP probably practises throwing knives in his restaurant kitchen, so I guess I better go try a practice throw,” says Craigen. Personal expectations vary, from Kamon’s confident declaration to claim the title, to Craigen’s goal of not hitting anyone with

the axe. While Schreurs is looking forward to the challenge, self-preservation is first and foremost. “Of course I’m excited to compete against my peers,” he said, “but I’ll be happy if I make it out alive, to be honest.” Powell River Loggers Sports takes place Friday, July 15, through Sunday, July 17. The celebrity axe-throw contest takes place Saturday starting around 10 am. For complete schedule and event details, go to powellriverloggersports.com.

Happy appy 3 - 5 pm every day Families gather at Willingdon Beach park every Friday morning during the summer for Fun in the Sun activities.
Running until late August, different themes for this year’s event include Get Active on July 22, Superheroes Assemble on July 29, Pirates Ahoy on August 5, Fire Safety on August 12, Outer Space on August 19 and Amazing Animals on August 26. The project is administered by Family Place summer intern students with support from regular staff and usually draws way more people than can fit in the centre’s mall location, according to Browne. “It always feels like a fair or a festival. It’s my highlight of the summer,
actually, and for my kids, too,” says Browne, who has two children, aged two and six. “They always want to come down there with me, whether I’m working at it or not.”

A summer family favourite since 2004, Fun in the Sun is back again on Friday mornings at Willingdon Beach with crafts, games, stories, snacks and, most importantly, fun. Presented by Family Place, a family centre in Town Centre Mall run by Powell River Employment Program Society, the free, weekly event running July through August is a “selfguided” activity fair for young children and their families, says program facilitator Bethany Browne. “Families get a chance to meet and play with other families, and there’s a really festive, community feel to it,” says Browne. “Fun in the Sun has enough structure so that everyone has something to do, but it’s also open and laid back enough that you can just go there and relax; so it’s a good balance.” Every Friday morning has a different theme and the events focus on literacy in cooperation with Literacy Outreach Powell River. Members of the literacy organization read books to children at the beach and provide free books to those who attend. “A lot of community groups and organizations partner with us to make this program a success,” says Browne. “The Powell River Public Library will have a mobile checkout and special guests from the Tla’amin Nation and Powell River Fire Department will join us for some activities.”

Mom was born and raised in Vancouver, where she studied piano and voice. She later studied organ and began her career as a music teacher. She taught for many years in Vancouver before opening a home studio in Ladner, BC. She “retired” to Texada Island to be near her family and found herself teaching again. Mom’s students became her friends and were like family to her.

Roses
and RASPBERRIES
A bushel full of roses to each of the three people who stopped their vehicles to help me when my walker tipped over, hurting my leg. They took me to the hospital in one car and my walker in the other. I thank you so much and it’s nice to know there are people out there watching and caring. Roses: I would like to thank the kind woman who found my wallet and delivered it promptly to my door. To say I was relieved and extremely grateful is an understatement. It is wonderful to know there are people like her in this world that are like guardian angels just looking for opportunities. Raspberries: I now understand why my municipal taxes are so high and services so poor. Our city staff remunerations are ridiculously high and should be frozen for 10 years. Stinky raspberries to the people who are illegally taking shellfish and crabs from our beaches. This is ridiculous and disgusting. Rambling red roses to the person who found my wandering iPhone. Thank you for taking the time to check my contacts list and making sure I did get my phone back that very day. Very thoughtful and much appreciated. Raspberries: Almost every Sunday, when Church of the Assumption empties, I cringe as I watch mothers leave their street-side car doors open while they put their children in the backseat; all the while, cars drive around them up and down Glacier Street. Would you like to know how many distracted drivers I see daily on their phones or texting? Can you imagine how you’d feel if....! If you don’t value your own lives, think about your children’s safety. Keep them safe, keep them on the sidewalk. Roses: Thank you to staff who beautified the planters and garden areas surrounding Powell River Academy of Music and Powell River Recreation Complex. Raspberries to that guy who keeps watering his driveway every single morning. Dude, it’s a driveway, not a garden. Roses: A heartfelt thank-you to all the organizers, volunteers, leaders and participants for the unforgettable week of music, dance and song that our memorable 2016 International Choral Kathaumixw entertained so many with. Get your thoughts published in the Peak Weekender. Email publisher@prpeak.com with your roses and raspberries. Please do not use names or specific identifiers. All commentors will be kept anonymous.
