Customers embrace full-service market Pacific Point Market delivers complete grocery shopping experience Since celebrating its first anniversary last month, Paci f ic Poi nt Ma rket’s management and staff continue to be encouraged by customer response to the full-service grocery store, which employs 34 people. “We’ve been pleasantly surprised with how people have embraced it,” says owner Tod English. “We have great management and staff and are very proud of how the business is performing from a startup phase.” The biggest challenge, according to English, has been educating the public that the store includes everything customers require on a grocery shopping trip. “It’s the first time we’ve had this level of produce, meat and the variety of other products at this location for as long I can remember, since I was a kid,” adds English. “Getting people to think about us when they leave their house for a shopping experience has been our main focus.” In addition to the meat depa r t ment, ex tensive produce section and a full selection of standard grocer y items, Pacific Point Market features an in-house Serious Coffee f r a nc h i s e, ba k er y a nd f u l l-s er v ic e del i; each department delivers top quality products at a rea-

sonable price. “Ever y t h i ng i n ou r deli is made fresh here in the store,” explains genera l manager Chris McMillan. “And we have plenty of organic and natural food choices in each department.” Fresh food items are found throughout the store, including in the bakery, where A Bread Affair organic bread, available exclusively in Powell River at Pacific Point, is freshbaked daily and available

among other choices such as baguettes, loaves, rolls and pastries. More than a dozen local companies provide products for each area of the store, including eggs, chicken, berries, zucchini and lettuce. “We’re buying locally as much as we can, including organic,” says McMillan. Local suppliers include 32 Lakes Coffee, Raincoast Kombucha, Garden Gate Spices, One Tree Farm, G r e e n B u y e r s C l u b,

Funky Beets Farm, Rusty Gate Farm, Coast Berry Company, Pebble Beach Prawns, Bay Leaf Blessings, Sweet Earth Soapworks and Flowers by Cori-Lynn. The store’s location at 7013 Thunder Bay Street is also equipped with a pickup window for ice cream and slushies, an outside sitting area, hot meals to go and an entirely organic, 59bin bulk section featuring a variety of products, including oats, barley, nuts, seeds and dried fruit.

members can redeem at any time for all products sold in store. “We have five $100 gift-card giveaways every month for our loyalty program members,” says McMillan. Tying in with its “buy local first” mandate, Pacific Point is a proud participant in the 100-mile challenge, which encourages consumers to eat food grown, produced and sold within 100 miles of their homes; as many products as possible are sourced from within that range and made available to customers. Along with the Powell River region, that territory encompasses Vancouver, Sunshine Coast, Whistler and as far south as Duncan on Vancouver Island. “We have a lot of products from Sea to Sky and Va nc ou v er a nd d a i r y from Island Farms,” says McMillan. Catering service is also available for special events, as are meat and veggie trays for pickup. Pacific Point Market is open 6 am-10 pm, seven days a week. Pride movie night features Viva Event organizers present coming-of-age film

they put on it, and it was released at Vancouver Pride,” says Belanger. Belanger says the Patricia is one of his favourite places to go with his husband and the Old Courthouse Inn co-owner, JP Brosseau. “We thought we would include something fun at the theatre where everyone can come and watch a nice movie with some wine and a good beer, and just gather together,” he says. Viva was chosen at the sug gest ion of Nelson. Organizers began by looking at some classic films, but soon realized they could get a new release for the same price and Viva

sparked their interest. “We watched the previews and immediately said, ‘Let’s do that one!’ We thought Viva looked really good and the reviews from all of the film festivals were very positive,” says Belanger. For Belanger, the film night is just one example of the importance of having inclusive events during Pride Week. “We’ve been shoved in the closet all of these years and just in the last decade or so we’ve finally been accepted in the community and the world,” says Belanger, “and we want to include everyone in these

events and say, ‘Hey, we’re normal, just like you.’” The Pride-themed evening will begin with Pride at the Art Wall from 7-9 pm on Arbutus Street near the Old Courthouse. Everyone is invited to join the artwall painting project before doors for the movie night open at 9:30 pm.

When Powell River Pride organizers were beginning to plan their week of events from Monday, August 1, through Sunday, August 7, one of the first ideas presented at an initial meeting was to hold a Pride-themed movie night. “We talked to [Patricia T heat re ow ner] A n n Nelson, she was 100 per cent behind it and it just took off from there,” says organizer Kelly Belanger. The Wednesday night event will feature the newrelease film Viva, a comingof-age story about a young Cuban hairdresser working at a Havana drag-show nightclub. The event will feature Townsite Brewing beer and a special new wine by 40 Knots Vineyard and Estate Winery, based in Comox. “It’s a pink champagne for the LGBTQ community with an anti-bullying label

UPCOMING

Q. If I want my son to inherit my house when I die, can I just leave a signed note that tells my family to transfer it to him? A. No, in order for your wishes to be binding they should be included in a Will that is executed according to the formal requirements specified in the Wills, Estates and Succession Act (in writing, signed and properly witnessed). If you leave no Will, your estate will be distributed according to the statute as it deals with intestate succession. In some cases, you may want to consider adding your son as a joint tenant on your property, but there are many additional issues to consider before doing so. If you need to prepare a Will or wish to discuss the pros and cons of transferring your property, please contact our office.

He’s played as a drummer for some of the country’s best young blues bands, but lately Scotty Hills has been working on his own thing. Even though it’s barely hit the shelves, the album has caught the attention of the world’s largest independent music publisher, Ole Major Indie, who signed Hills to a deal and sent him to L.A. to write at the world famous Westlake Studios in Hollywood, where Hills collaborated with American Idol finalist Haley Reinhart and One Republic drummer Jerrod Bettis.

Roses and RASPBERRIES Roses to the person who found my purse near the harbour. Roses also to staff at the harbour office. It is good to have honest people in town. Roses to the considerate people who put chairs or benches out for people who need them. I’d like to send a big bouquet of roses to the couple who listed free landscaping rocks in the free section of Peak classifieds. Not only did they give us some lovely rocks they had collected over the years, but they delivered them to our backyard in their truck. Can’t get better than that. Raspberries to my neighbour, who refuses to put a muffler on his truck. A bunch of sweet-smelling roses to the person who turned in my daughter-in-law’s wallet at a local grocery store this past weekend. Bunches of roses to staff at the main post office. I went in with a bubble-wrapped, fragile ceramic coffee pot from Ethiopia to send to my niece. I was in search of a box of the appropriate size. Not only did staff fish through the boxes in the back room to find just the right size, but they filled it up with all those plastic air pillows that made a comfy nest for the coffee pot. Then they wrapped the box and labeled it.

Raspberries to BC Ferries. My wife was caught in the ferry problem at Saltery Bay last weekend. She arrived there at 2 pm and did not leave until 6:15 pm. Ferry staff were great, so roses to them, but BC Ferries is something else. All it does is stop us from coming to Powell River to visit our granddaughter. Roses to my neighbour, who shared his delicious raspberries.

Beverly Sterling

May 9, 1957 - July 14, 2016

Beverly will be dearly missed by her roommates, friends, church members and staff who had the honour of supporting her. There was a celebration of her life at Salvation Army Church on Thursday, July 28, 2016.

Shirley Ruth MacMillan (née McFadden) April 14, 1929 - January 17, 2016

If you are arriving from out of town and need accommodation, here is a list of hotels and motels: Powell River Town Centre Hotel, 4660 Joyce Avenue, 604.485.3000; Beach Gardens Resort and Marina, 7074 Westminster Street, 604.485.6267; Island View Lodge, 6255 Marine Avenue, 604.483.3113; The Old Courthouse Inn, 6243 Walnut Street, 604.483.4000.

Shirley passed peacefully at 86 in Victoria with her daughter by her side. She was the daughter of George Albert McFadden and Marion Wilson McFadden of Toronto. Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years John MacMillan and her older brothers Don and Jim McFadden. Born in Toronto, Shirley shared an adventurous heart. She took great pride in cycling around Europe for a year with two girlfriends in 1953. On another trip with friends driving a Chevy across Canada in 1954, Shirley met John; they were married in 1955. Shirley kept a beautiful garden at their Joyce Avenue home. She enjoyed hiking, fishing and boating trips to Desolation Sound on the Kirsty B. She was a passionate reader of history. Despite many medical challenges, including breast cancer, surgery for a brain tumour in 1992, a cochlear implant and dementia in her later years, Shirley held on to her great sense of humour and positive, joyful outlook on life. Friends remember her as one who “Never complained about anything,” saying, “She was so easy to love.” Shirley had a deep and abiding love for her children and will be greatly missed by son Rob, wife Donna and children Lindsay and Andrew; Jamie, and wife Carla; Cathy, husband Chris and son Emmett; and family in Ontario and Australia. A service for Shirley will be held at Powell River United Church, 6932 Crofton Street, on Saturday, August 6 at 3 pm. Messages of condolence may be sent to cathymacsihoe@ gmail.com.

Everyone loves a parade, and while other Powell River Sea Fair events were postponed this year, vintage cars, hot rods, trucks and colourful floats were still on display in the 53rd annual parade. Community members and organizations marched along Joyce Avenue, down Alberni Street and onto Marine Avenue on the morning of Saturday, July 23, to the delight of young and old. DAVE BRINDLE PHOTOS
