Pelican Pressure Washing and Paint offers trusted quality and experience Pelican Pressure Washing and Paint’s team is planning to build on a successful first year of operation. After initially specializing in pressure washing and cleaning, owner Stephanie Bleau and executive project manager Dan Russell have incorporated painting into the business, which provides services to commercial, residential and industrial customers and clients. “Dan and I are both experienced painters,” says Stephanie, who also excels in home décor and interior design, “and together we have many years of combined customer service.” Dan previously worked in the pressure-washing field for Pelican Cleaning, which ceased operations three years ago. “I was the first employee when it started up in 2001; just a kid out of high school,” says Dan. “We didn’t buy or take over that company; we are a new business.” Changing the name was considered, but because Dan helped build the former company with John Goudreault and the name had been known in the community for more than a decade, Dan and Stephanie decided to keep the first half of the old moniker. As a result, Pelican Pressure Washing and Paint was born. “We are a brand new company with a fresh outlook, ready to serve our community,” says Stephanie, “and we plan to continue providing our service for years to come.” Pelican’s painting services include interior and exterior projects, and any jobs requiring the refinishing of any and all types of wood furniture, structural steel and iron. Along with his painting and pressure washing experience, Dan is the only technician certified by Phil Ackland Training for cleaning commercial exhaust systems on the Sunshine Coast. Hot and/or cold pressure wash-

Multiple skills Pelican Pressure Washing and Paint executive project manager Dan Russell provides commercial, residential and industrial customers with a variety of services, including pressure washing, painting and commercial exhaust system cleaning.

ing can be effective in many areas, including concrete, driveways and sidewalks, sun decks, balconies and stairs, and is also well suited for stripping paint. A variety of siding can also benefit from pressure washing, as can boats and vehicles. For homeowners, keeping gutters, awnings and downspouts clear of debris is of utmost importance. “Good flowing gutters prevent clogged downspouts and potential damage to your house,” explains Dan. A clean roof prevents moisture from accumulating. If not removed, debris promotes rot and decay of shingles. Despite what some people may think, cedar shake and asphalt roofs can be pressure washed. “With the right application of pressure and proper techniques, removing moss and other build up can increase the life of a roof,” says Dan. Pelican has pumps and nozzles available for a variety of work.

A 2500-PSI (pounds per square inch) unit is used for jobs requiring more finesse, such as roofs and vinyl siding. “Choosing the right nozzle is key to getting the job done safely and efficiently,” says Dan. A 3500-PSI unit is excellent for cleaning concrete and clearing parking lots of rocks, dust, cigarette butts and other debris. Pelican also uses its equipment to clear perimeter drains and sewer lines for customers. Detergents are not generally used in day-today operations, but are sometimes necessary. Pelican uses only environmentally friendly and biodegradable products. Regardless of the size or scope of a project, Stephanie and Dan focus on exceeding customer expectations with reliability, punctuality and attention to detail. “John told me years ago that being self-employed is like having the whole community as your boss,” says Dan.

Current Pelican clients include Safeway, First Credit Union, Putters Mini-Golf, Superior Propane, City Transfer, Mother Nature and many restaurants. “Pelican is back and under new management,” says Dan. “We plan to be adding many other local companies in the near future.” Pelican is a proud member of Powell River Chamber of Commerce and Powell River Salmon Society. “We not only work in our community, but with our community,” says Stephanie. “We had a great first year and are looking forward to many more to come.” For information about Pelican Pressure Washing and Paint call 604.414.5369, email pelipressurewashing@gmail.com, go to pelicanpressurewashing.com or search for the company on Facebook.

the daylong event is also a learning tool for those who attend. “The workshops are to help people understand what to do with the seeds and how to have successful experiences with the seeds they buy,” said Jobi. The event will include the sweep swap and sale, garden fair, kids corner, raffle, information tables and more. Seedy Saturday is run by Seed Savers of Powell River, which is part of a blanket organization called Seeds of Diversity that runs similar events in other cities and towns.

Jobi says when she heard the event was looking for another organizer, she was quick to step up with cochair Ellen deCasmaker, who runs Eternal Seed on Zilinsky Road with her husband Gary, and ensure the event would happen again this year. “It’s such a va luable community event,” says Jobi, who is also market manager at the Powell River Farmers’ Market. “It’s really neat to be a part of the seed stage so early on, because I see all of the great results of the seeds later on at the market.”

An annual event celebrating seeds is bigger than ever, thanks to the injection of new energy and the guidance of those who started it more than 10 years ago. The 11th annual Seedy Saturday, a seed exchange and sale, will feature a number of workshops and activities. The event has seen most of the former committee members who ran the event for the past decade c ome f u l l c i r c le w it h seed sales of their own, according to new event co-chair Juhli Jobi. “Seedy Saturday was formed by a group of farmers really focused on local seed production and educating people and encouraging them to save their own seeds,” says Jobi. “It’s rea lly encouraging that the group that had spent so much time organizing it in the past has come together

A. The amortization period of a mortgage is the time it would take the borrower to pay off the entire mortgage if the interest rate, payments and other terms of the mortgage remained the same. The term of a mortgage is the length of time you have negotiated your specific terms of the mortgage, including the interest rate. At the end of the term, your mortgage will become due and payable unless renewed with the lender. If you have any questions about your mortgage, please contact our office.

POWELL RIVER WEEKEND

AROUND TOWN

Boys Will Be Girls

A recent drag show at the Carlson Community Club’s downstairs lounge featured Vancouver-based dragshow performers Symone Says (Christopher Hunte) and Mina Mercury (Jason Bradstock) doing bang-on impersonations of popular female singers (oh, and Michael Jackson). A packed house enjoyed a fabulous night of dancing and singing along, sponsored by Powell River Pride and Iguana’s Mexican Grill. JASON SCHREURS PHOTOS
