Who’s cooking? Decisions, decisions… Whether you’re looking for a meal, a beverage while meeting with friends, or a tasty treat to satisfy a sweet tooth, the following pages offer enticements for where to go, and what will be available upon arrival, even if it means preparing a feast at home. Comfort food is always appealing, but cravings are heightened even more during fall and winter. Cooler temperatures typically mean more time is spent indoors, especially at meal times. Establishments in the qathet region provide a wide variety of options, enticing foodies and anyone needing a break from the kitchen to step away and experience a diverse selection of cuisine from around the world. Treat yourself and your family by stepping out and supporting the restaurant industry. This helps the local economy, gives you a break from preparing your own meals and, most importantly, negates having to clean up the kitchen afterward. For anyone who is not quite ready

to leave the comfort of home, their next meal is just a phone call or online order away. Go ahead, satisfy that craving. Pull out that favourite menu from the kitchen drawer and dial it in; you’ve earned it. If your preference is to prepare some or most meals at home, the following pages feature local businesses with everything you need to make a meal for the family or guests. Get creative, find a recipe and pick up the makings for a memorable meal, dessert and whatever beverage will best complement the offerings. If you’re not hungry now, you will be after perusing through these pages. And if you are hungry, get ready to be inspired to take action, whether it’s by picking up the phone or jumping into your vehicle. Be comfortable and indulge, whether at home or out and about. Relax, taste and enjoy what the season brings to your table.

Eat local more often Do you want to prioritize putting more local foods on your dinner table? Here are some excellent ways to find more food that hasn’t travelled thousands of kilometres before landing on your plate. Look for locally produced products at the supermarket. Look for tags or logos indicating a product was made in your province. The store may also establish a dedicated space or post signage to highlight locally grown or produced goods. Shop according to the season. Opt for seasonal fruits and vegetables. You can buy enough in-season food to enjoy all year round by freezing, making preserves or cooking dishes with a long shelf life. Why not grow your own? Visit producers in your area. Roadside stands, farmers’ markets and agricultural fairs are all excellent

opportunities to stock up on local goods. Look for U-picks to find a whole array of local products. Subscribe to a food basket delivery service. Increasingly, producers are delivering baskets or boxes of fruits, vegetables, meats or dairy products. When you subscribe to such a service, you get the freshest products possible while also supporting a local business. Bon appetit! RESOURCES TO EXPLORE Every province has resources to help you find vendors and producers of local food products. If you’re considering getting more engaged in the local food movement, check out these resources: • Canadian Organic Growers (cog.ca) • Food Secure Canada (foodsecurecanada.org)

Make your holiday party

an event to remember

December is looming on the horizon and so the time has come to start planning your holiday festivities. This year, make a pledge that you won’t leave things until the last minute. Who needs the headache of harried scrambling to busy grocery stores or battling the crowds at the bigbox stores? Preparing early will help you organize a truly unforgettable event, whether it’s for work colleagues, friends, or family members.

Start by considering whether you want to host a party at home or dine out. Fix the date and reserve a restaurant or caterer as early as possible. After all, you don’t want to be one of those disorganized people who have to settle for a less-than-ideal place just because it’s one of the few still available. Then, if you have a large enough budget, find a DJ to provide the music for your event. Your guests will have lots of fun on the dance floor to the sound of today’s hits as well as their very own special

requests. Karaoke is always a popular entertainment option as well. Once you’ve settled all those details, let your imagination run riot and think up ways to add some magic to your party. Plan an evening that will appeal to the majority of your guests, one that will require some amusing involvement on their part. Even the most dignified of people can let their hair down with some well-planned party games. If you really want to impress your guests, bring in a specialist to decorate your home or reception room in a tasteful holiday style. Don’t forget that their first impression as they enter the room is often what people remember most. If all this organization seems a little overwhelming and time-consuming to you, you could always hire a professional party planner, an increasingly popular service for busy people. Be sure to phone around early if you want to get the best!

MEX The of M suite wine Sauv nicel base

Pair t of M

Must-try

wine pairings Pairing wine with food is an art form and choosing the right combination will enliven the inherent flavours of both the meal and the wine. Here are a few suggested pairings. ITALIAN CUISINE A dry Chianti is the perfect accompaniment for Italian dishes with tomato sauce like traditional pizzas and pasta bolognese. If you’re enjoying a dish with pesto or seafood, choose a light- or medium-bodied white like a Soave or Pinot Grigio. For something with cream sauce or a lot of cheese, try an oaked Chardonnay. MEXICAN CUISINE The bright, spicy notes of Mexican food are well suited to fresh and crisp wines with lots of acidity. Sauvignon Blanc goes nicely with tortilla and salsabased dishes. Pair the smoky, rich flavours of Mexican barbacoa (meat

slow-cooked over an open fire) and chipotle with a light and acidic red wine like a Pinot Noir or a Gamay. SZECHUAN CUISINE Bolder and spicier than other types of Chinese cuisine, Szechuan food goes well with off-dry white wines like Rieslings and Gewürztraminers. Generally, spicy foods pair best with chilled white wines, so save your red for another meal. When it comes to pairing wine with food, it’s hard to generalize. Fortunately, many restaurants employ a sommelier to help you choose your wine. If you’re dining at home, enlist the help of a specialist from a liquor or wine store to help you find a good pairing.

Squash galore Many people are unfamiliar with all the different varieties of squash that appear in a multitude of colours and shapes at this time of year. Because of their low cost, especially in the fall, as well as their versatility in the kitchen, their long storage life, their low calorie content, and their high mineral and vitamin content, we would all benefit from adding them to our diets. Not to mention that they taste delicious, no matter how you prepare them! Here are some examples of different types of squash and how to prepare them: BUTTERNUT SQUASH Its buttery colour and giant pear shape conceal an orange flesh that makes delicious soups. As a purée it adds colour to your plate and its sweetish flavour surprises the palate. Try it puréed in cannelloni or ravioli and in cakes and muffins.

SPAGHETTI SQUASH Pale yellow and oval like a football, this squash can be prepared in a flash. All you have to do is cut it in two, remove the seeds and bake it for 45 minutes. Delicious with a bit of butter and parmesan cheese, it’s also a great alternative to pasta for those of us wanting to lose a few pounds. ACORN OR PEPPER SQUASH This variety, with its dark green skin, distinctive longitudinal ridges, and sweet yellow-orange flesh, is difficult to peel. For this reason it is often stuffed with a mix of meat and vegetables and then baked in the oven. Sprinkle some cheese on the top at the end of the cooking time, and you’ll have a fall supper success on your hands. There are so many varieties: why not cook a dif ferent sort of squash every week throughout the fall?

Four sustainable foods you

should be eating

Do you want to eat healthily and do your best for the planet? Here are four sustainable foods you should be eating. 1. Pulses like beans, lentils and peas are a great source of protein and iron and don’t require much water to grow. They also fortify the soil with nitrogen, making it easier to grow other crops. 2. Molluscs such as oysters, mussels, clams and scallops are nutrient-dense and remove pollutants such as carbon from seawater. 3. Local and organically grown fruits

and vegetables help promote healthy soil and keep harmful pesticides out of water sources. Moreover, you aren’t supporting carbon-intensive supply chains when you buy local, in-season fruits and vegetables. 4. Seaweed is highly nutritious and has a low environmental impact. It gets everything it needs to grow from the water around it with no need for fertilizers. Seaweed also filters excess nutrients from seawater, such as phosphorus and nitrogen. Try including some of these foods in your weekly meal plan.
