New name and location

Same great team offers services under First Wealth Management For Mutual Funds Representatives Barb Cooper a nd Ra nda l l Sm isko, a nd Fi na ncia l Pla n ner Gi l les Patenaude, moving to a new location is just another step in the progression of their business. All three members of the wealth management team at Westview Agencies have settled into offices as First Wealth Management, a new subsidiary of First Credit Union. “They’ve always been part of the credit union wealth management division, even when they were at Westview Agencies,” explains Kirst y Reid, Vice President of Wealth Management and Business Development at First Credit Union. “This new location gives them a dedicated space and the opportunity to build new relationships.” The move also brings the entire wealth management team, including Financial Planner Scott Kovacs and Personal Account Manager Katryna Lawry, closer together and under one roof. While Kovacs and Lawry will continue to be located on the main floor of the branch, Cooper, Patenaude, and Smisko will work from the second floor of the First Credit Union building at 4721 Joyce Avenue. “We’re very excited about our new location,” says Cooper, “and looking forward to getting in touch with more members now that we’re closer to the branch.”

Clients can access the dedicated wealth management space via stairs to the right of the automated teller machine at the front of the building, or use the elevator conveniently located just inside the main entrance. “Our office is very private with easy access and its own entrances,” says Patenaude. “Clients can walk right into the wealth management area and receive immediate attention.” While the space is new and the name has changed, the entire wealth management team will continue to provide the same level of advice, expertise and financial planning services it always has in order to help clients achieve their financial goals. “It’s a new name and a new location, but the same great people offering the same great selection of products and services as before,” says Reid. In addition to helping clients with mutual funds, segregated funds and other investment products, Cooper, Patenaude and Smisko each provide complete life insurance services as well, including everything from term life insurance to group medical benefits. All three will also continue to represent Qtrade Asset Management. For Smisko, the move is also a coming home of sorts, as he returns to a building he worked in for six years prior to spending the last 18 months at the

Westview Agencies location. “I still have a lot of clients who first met with me here,” he said. “It’s exciting to move back and bring those clients, and newer clients, along with me.” While Cooper and Patenaude have set up shop in the building for the first time, they have been part of the First Group of Companies in a subsidiary capacity since moving from Oceanside Financial to Westview Agencies in 2008. Members of the First Wealth Management team will host an open house at their new location in the First Credit Union building from 11 am-4 pm on Thursday, November 3. Clients are invited to drop in for coffee, check out the new space and book an appointment with one of the team members. Although the services, products and representatives remain the same, some direct contact information for wealth management team members has changed. Cooper can now be reached at 604.483.8670 or Barb.Cooper@firstwealth.ca; Patenaude at 604.483.8676 or Gilles.Patenaude@firstwealth.ca; and Smisko at 604.483.8682 or Randall.Smisko@firstwealth.ca. First Wealth Management can also be reached by calling First Credit Union at 604.485.6206. Mutual funds and securitiesrelated financial planning services are offered through Qtrade Asset Management Inc., Member MFDA.

Jack son say s work i ng w it h Movember Canada and the organization as a whole has been a very positive experience for the local firefighters. “Movember takes the time to get to know everyone who is fundraising for them, including small groups like us, with 20 to 30 people raising a few thousand dollars,” says

Jackson. “We’re really just a drop in the bucket, and one year a Movember founder from Australia sent us a personal email thanking us for our efforts. Every year they send us emails, thank-you cards and plaques.” A side f rom donat ing on line, Jackson and his team have also put together a Movember 2017 calendar, available for $10 at the Peak office as of Monday, November 7. In addition, Blue Steel Imaging will have shirts and hoodies for sale throughout the month and a fundraising burger and beer night will take place November 26 at TC’s Pub, including a moustache shave-off. “The local response has always been huge to the campaign,” says Jackson, “and I’m always surprised every year by how much people get into the Movember movement.”

For the past seven years Powell River Fire Rescue firefighters have been growing moustaches for charity during the month of November. And for those who cannot grow a lip caterpillar, no problem, they just paint one on. It’s all part of the international movement known as Movember, which has raised more than $650 million since it started in 2003. This year, local firefighters are joined by Catalyst Paper Corporation’s emergency response team and have set up an online Movember account as Powell River and Area Emergency Services. The group is calling out to others in the community to join them in raising funds for prostate cancer prevention and mental wellness/suicide prevention. “I would like to challenge other emergency services like the Powell River RCMP and BC Ambulance Service to jump on board and see what they can do,” says auxiliary firefighter and local Movember team leader Darryl Jackson. Those interested in donating to the firefighters’ Movember campaign can do so for the group as a whole at

PEAK WEEKENDER

Green Halloween It’s not too late to be freakishly green for Halloween. Still looking for a costume? Avoid expensive, often wasteful last-minute purchases and consider the following. • Makeup only costumes. Simple eye adornments are a quick fix to get into the spirit without much hassle. • Raid your friend’s wardrobe. Nothing in your closet? Look in someone else’s for treasures that spark your imagination. • Recycling-box costumes. Cardboard has 101 uses. With some duct tape, paint and a few other crafty additions, you are set for some creative fun. • Make homemade fake blood. Creepy recipes are available online. Sprinkle it on torn clothing to hint at the lifting of the veil between worlds. • Wear all white clothing of any era for a ghostly night out. Add black eyeliner, put talcum powder in your hair and you are ready to haunt any party. • Squash it up. Use the abundance of your garden to dream up a monstrously unique outfit. There are a few ways to avoid ghoulish waste outside as well. Gourds of all types make a festive display on your porch. Make a scarecrow from old clothing by stuffing the body with more clothing or hay. With

fall leaves in abundance, they are an easy addition to any display. Spent lumber can be crafted into tombstones. Take crafting inside to make zombie candleholders out of mason jars, bats from spent toilet paper rolls or monsters from painted tin cans. Unsure where to start? Online ideas are plentiful this time of year. Once the celebrations have ended and your pumpkins are only getting scarier, be sure to compost them in your backyard or drop them off at the community composting collection point at Town Centre Recycling depot. Pumpkins fit for animal feed donated at this location on Wednesday, November 2, will be offered to a local farmer.

Helping kids kick the sugar habit Here is a question few people will answer correctly: How many cubes of sugar are in a large, one litre, slushy drink? If you think one litre is much too large of a serving, just watch kids coming out of the convenience store and see how often they are carrying a giant drink. Oh, and if you guessed 24 cubes, you are right. If you were surprised, don’t worry, most people will be. Sip Smart! BC, an educational program that helps teach students about sugary drinks and healthy drink choices, was created to help educate kids and families about consuming sugary drinks. The program, funded by Provincial Health Services Authorities and originally tested in 2008 with grade four students in 20 schools around BC, has been updated in a partnership between the BC Pediatric Society and the provincial government. Sip Smart! BC is now being rolled out for students in grades four, five and six. Because most sugary

HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet drinks provide little or no nutrition, they are a poor option compared to healthy drinks like water and plain milk. Need to satisfy a thirst? Water is the best choice and a sugarfree way to stay hydrated, energized and alert. Sugary drinks abound in store coolers everywhere. They include the usual and obvious such as pop or slushies, but also sitting on the shelf are “fruit punch” and “you-name-it-ade.” In fact, almost anything not labelled 100 per cent fruit juice will contain added

sugar, and maybe little or no juice. Sports and energy drinks, and even flavoured waters, are all culprits containing added sugar. But how much sugar are we talking about? To find out, read the ingredients label and for every four grams of sugar count one teaspoon or one sugar cube. That means the average can of pop contains 10 cubes (40 grams) of sugar. Bubble tea has 21 cubes of sugar in a 500 millilitre serving. While the Sip Smart! BC program provides information for teachers in the classroom, it also has materials for families to use at home. Even if your child does not receive instruction at school, a parents’ handbook is a rich sou rce of i n for mat ion. All materials are available online at bcpeds. ca/Programs/sipsmart. aspx?MenuID=3347. A handbook for teachers is also available online, along with multiple supporting handouts, overheads and other classroom materials. There are fact sheets, les-

son plans, handouts and everything you might need to teach kids about drinking sugar. The first lesson in the program, Drink Detective, is a delightful introduction to the subject. It provides three activities starting with “Sugar Shocker” and followed by “Drink Check” and “Drink Diary.” Other

lessons discuss how to use Canada’s Food Guide, how water is most beneficial and how it is not just sugar we should watch for in our drinks. The goal of the Sip Smart!BC program is to help kids make healthy choices. Specifically, when kids are thirsty, they should reach for a healthy bev-

erage. Sugary drinks are everywhere, but healthy drink choices are better for a child’s health. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for rural Vancouver Coastal Health, including Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Seato-Sky, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.

THE LAW CORNER Q: I was injured in a motor vehicle collision and I missed work. Can I claim for lost wages? A: Yes. If the other driver was the cause of the collision, you are entitled to be restored to your pre-accident position. That means you can claim for income loss in addition to damages for pain and suffering (typically called “general” damages). If your injuries are prolonged, you can also claim for loss of earning capacity or future loss of income if you cannot return to your job or are limited in what jobs you can do due to your injuries. If you have been injured in a motor vehicle collision please contact our office.

Otherworldly residents make presence known with periodic visits In the spirit of Halloween, I want to share a ghost story. But, worry not, the tale is not a scary one. Ghosts reportedly frequenting the Historic Lund Hotel are known to be friendly. Many people in the community believe that the hotel is haunted by at least two well-known local ghosts. One is reported to be a woman in a long, white dress, often seen dancing in the hotel saloon after hours, or checking out wares in the store. Another ghost, possibly the same woman but a few years older, is said to spend time in the banquet hall. A gentleman in a nice suit reportedly appears as a third ghost and wanders around the oldest part of the building, the original Hotel Malaspina, which was renamed Lund Hotel after it burned down in 1918. Some people suggest the three ghosts are versions of Lund founder Fred Thulin and his first wife Vira May Palmer. The gentleman ghost is said to appear in the lobby of the hotel, where Thulin’s picture hangs in exactly almost the same spot it has been since the hotel was built. If it is Thulin, he seems to be a little possessive about the hotel he founded and has often been seen hovering over hotel employees while they work, as if to make sure a good job is being done. Perhaps he is just a stickler for details. Palmer, on the other hand, seems content to be seen dancing or happily strolling the halls. Palmer also likes to leave a calling

card. Hotel employees talk about coming to work in the morning and finding coins on desks, floors and counters that they know were clear the night before. Supposedly it used to be pennies, but now that we have stopped using them, she leaves dimes, often in pairs. The third floor, which at one time held rooms for guests, provided staff

with accommodations and housed offices and a hairdressing studio, among other things, seems to be another favourite haunt for the hotel’s otherworldly residents. Employees report hearing people walking around or running up and down the stairs even though the only stairway to that level is locked. Also, figures have been reported to be seen from the outside, standing at the dormer windows of the old rooms and holding

aside the curtains to look out on life in the harbour below. General manager Kurt Pyrch said he recently took a group of guests up there for a tour and found, you guessed it, mysterious dimes on the floor. So, this Halloween, if you happen to be out at the end of the road, stop in and say hello to Thulin and Palmer. I’m sure they would appreciate it. You might even end up with a dime out of the deal.

(Melvin) Glen Calwell January 18, 1935 – October 22, 2016

Glen Calwell of Osoyoos passed away after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 81 years. He is survived by his wife Teresa Calwell, sisters Cora Calwell, Marg Simonetta and Joan Wootton (Doug), sister-in-law Darlene Calwell, daughter Cindy (Dave), grandson Jason (Emily), three great-grandchildren Justin, Daniel and Elizabeth and his son Rick. Glen is also survived by many nieces and grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews, as well as his two cats Simba and Snuggles. He was predeceased by his brother Allen Calwell and brother-in-law Sam Simonetta. Glen was born at Rock Bay, BC, and raised in the Lund/ Powell River area. His first job was at the MacMillan Bloedel pulp mill in Powell River. He was a sheet metal mechanic, oil burner mechanic and owned his own heating business. He was also a fisherman, fishing vessel owner and a cash buyer. Glen and his wife “retired” to Osoyoos in 1995. Teresa “paid” Howie Hebig to let Glen act as his “go for” for several years. He enjoyed assisting Dale and Anita Lehman in building their house in Osoyoos and spent several years shopping every morning with Randy Ihmie. Glen enjoyed having friends over, especially for smoked salmon or smoked black cod, or maybe just turkey dinner. A special thanks to Dr. Megan Kimberley, Dr. Bellingan and to the staff at the hospital in Oliver for their consideration and care in Glen's final days. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA would be appreciated. Condolences and tributes may be directed to the family by visiting nunes-pottinger.com.

John loved teaching and worked at Vancouver Island University for 25 years. Shortly after retiring, he sustained a spinal cord injury. For the past seven years he taught us courage and determination. John is survived by his wife Laverne, daughter Katie and brother Robin. A service will be held Saturday, November 5, at 1:30 pm at Evangel Pentecostal Church. Donations in John’s name to Camp Imadene Sponsorship Fund (imadene.com) would be appreciated.
