Cut-a-Thon supports Grace House Afterglow Hair Lounge stylists host fundraising event St ylists at A fterglow Hair Lounge have set a specific day aside in order to give back to their community. During regular business hours from 10 am-6 pm on Wednesday, November 8, four stylists will be on hand at 7075 Alberni Street to offer haircuts at a charity Cut-aThon for a minimum $25 donation. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Grace House. “We’ve been wanting to do something that involves what we do on a daily basis to give back to the community, and this is the best fit,” says owner and lead stylist Holly Lowes. “We’re all pretty excited to do something we do every day for a really worthy cause.” Although there is no age limit, a few simple rules apply for anyone interested in participating in the fundraising event. “We ask that everyone comes with clean, dry hair, so washing and styling is not necessary, which allows us to accommodate more people,” says Lowes. Under the umbrella of Powell River and Region Transition House Society, Grace House offers safety, temporary housing, support, referrals and resource information for women and children who are in danger, physically and mentally, of spousal/ partner violence. Grace House also offers telephone support to women who are not ready to leave their home situation. “We have a very specific mandate to help women and children who are fleeing domestic abuse,” says society executive director .. 8 .............. The organization also has one recovery bed for women who have been through detoxing at the hospital. “We can take a woman in and she can take some time to look at ways to not fall back into the same lifestyle,” says Chambers. Threading services are also offered as a hair-removal alternative to waxing; the ancient method originated in the Middle East. “We are the only place in Powell River to offer it,” says Lowes. Q: I’ve been injured in a car accident. Am I entitled to compensation? A: If you are injured in a car accident, even if you caused the accident, you may be entitled to “no-fault” accident benefits. These benefits generally include wage loss while unable to work due to your injuries, and medical and rehabilitation benefits. If you did not cause the accident, or only partly caused the accident, you may be entitled to “damages.” Damages can include amounts for pain and suffering, lost wages, future care, out-of-pocket expenses and other losses. ICBC typically makes an offer to settle your claim for damages. Once you settle, you cannot make further claims, even if your injuries cause unexpected losses after settlement. Show unveils One Hit Wonders Motus O Dance Theatre returns with collection of commissioned pieces

Contrary to circulating rumours, I am not retiring or moving away from Powell River. My wife has taken a new position in her field and we are thrilled she is able to further develop her specialized professional skills.
Members of Motus O Dance Theatre go steampunk during one of many numbers in their latest show, One Hit Wonders.
to Powell River, by Croker, her husband James and Jack Langenhuizen, Motus O has brought productions such as Christmas Carol, Circus Terrif ico, W hat Kids T hink a nd Perspective here in the past. Croker says all three co-artistic directors share a similar vision for the company, which uses selective dialogue to complement its dramatic dance pieces. Dialogue is only added when necessary, says Croker. “Our pieces are very characterdriven and sometimes there is spoken word or video, but we really want to use the power of movement to do most of the speaking,” says Croker. “Dance’s power is creating emotion and it’s often communicated better
through movement than words.” Music is also a huge part of dance and One Hit Wonders features an eclectic mix, including the heavier sounds of Nine Inch Nails and Disturbed as well as some of the company’s own original arrangements. “James and I are huge music fans,” says Croker, “so whatever theme we are trying to create, the music is integral.”

Attendees of a new Motus O Dance Theatre performance might just leave Max Cameron Theatre with a new perspective on life, according to coartistic director Cynthia Croker. Motus O, which has been in Powell River with several other dance theatre shows in the past, brings its One Hit Wonders show to life on Friday, November 3. “We really want to create a situation where someone relates to the show in their personal life, and they walk away from the theatre with a different perspective, and hopefully with some growth,” says Croker. “Some of the dance pieces are very poignant and we’re hoping attendees are getting some insight into their lives while watching.” Croker says the show is a combination of different commissioned pieces the company has produced over the years, including an RCMP-taught musical ride piece using toy hobby horses that includes four Brooks Secondary School drama students. “A few of our pieces are funny as well,” says Croker, “and it’s always important to laugh, and laugh at yourself, and see the funny side of humanity.” Founded in the small city of Stouffville, Ontario, very close in size

Recycling for zombies
Brain-dead waste reduction tips: 1. Minimize. Fewer things means fewer decisions and the bonus of allowing others to receive treasures at a discount. Donate or give away things not used in the past year or two. You can also sell some items, but beware of the brain juices those activities suck up. 2. Download the ReCollect app on your phone so you never have to remember collection day again. You will receive garbage and recycling day reminders through email, text or a phone call. 3. Create a recycling system in your home that matches the system you use (curbside, depots or both). Spend time
Together we raised $4,550 for Powell River and District United Way and Grace House at our Pregame Tailgate Party. We could not have done it without the support of our co-sponsors, Villani & Company, Underwriters Insurance Agencies, RBC – Rachelle Ford and Pacific Coastal Airlines, along with the generosity of the prize and food donations.
Everyone worked amazingly hard with great enthusiasm to create a wonderful family event paired with great music by Gitta Mae & Band, and awesome barbecue burgers, compliments of Royal LePage Powell River, Tim Hortons, Rotary (donated barbecue), Vanderkemp Sales and Service (propane) and Mitchell Brothers.
LET’S TALK TRASH orienting all the goblins in the house how to use and maintain the system to create less work and mess. If tight on space, make the system vertical. Suggested bins can include paper and cardboard, refundables, containers (paper, plastic and metal), glass containers and another for other recyclables available for drop-off at most depots (cork, pens, highlighters, felts, cellphones, household batteries, ziplock bags and garbage bags). 4. Set up a compost system. Use a smalllidded container to collect kitchen scraps. Have another lidded container in the freezer for waste like fish, meat and dairy gone bad. Take full containers and yard waste to your backyard composter or Town Centre Recycling Depot on the same day every week.
Lucky prize winners: Stephanie Keddy - Return airfare to Vancouver, donated by Pacic Coastal Airlines Carson Leach - Stand up paddle board, donated by Rachelle Ford and RBC Joyce Genttner - Adult Kings prize package, donated by Powell River Kings Dawn Windsor - Gift basket valued at $100, donated by Darick Holler Home Inspections Mike Keating - $400 dance scholarship, donated by Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy Laura George - Canucks jersey, donated by Cover your Assets Home Inspection Lori Madden - Propane fire table, donated by Royal LePage Realtors® Lindsey Long - Youth hockey stick, donated by Taws And thank you to YOU, for supporting our event, buying prize tickets and helping Grace House and Powell River and District United Way. If you have ever been overwhelmed at the thought of sorting through a hauntingly messy pile of recycling, brain scientists would not be the least bit surprised. Signs, advertisements and social media flood our senses and ask us to pay attention. But thinking requires effort, and depending on what type of day you are having, your brain may have already exhausted its ability to learn anything new, perhaps because it is busy dreaming up costume ideas. We have a limited amount of conscious thought in a given day, after that we are pretty much zombies who default to social norms and societal systems. Because brains have such a short battery life, we save energy by ignoring, filtering and following general rules. Anything that requires attention drains our brains. The silver lining is that tired brains crave simplicity and systems. We can take advantage of this.
A BIG thank you

PROWLS RESCUE OF THE WEEK
Wednesday, November 8 10 am-6 pm BOUNCE BACK: This young Eurasian collared-dove was in sorry state when it was found this summer after being attacked by a cat. Upon arrival at Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS), it had a broken wing, broken leg and bite wounds on its neck and breast; flight feathers had also been torn out of its wings and tail. The dove was not expected to last one night, but after a round of antibiotics coupled with pain medication and wrapping of the broken leg and wing, it responded well to treatment. The dove was moved into a flightrehabilitation cage to rebuild its strength, endurance and ability to fly and perch. It was successfully released six weeks later. Eurasian collared-doves are easily recognized by their three-part coo. Look up to see them on telephone wires and poles near homes. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Teens and adults are susceptible to the pressure to conform. The way we dress, the way we talk and who our friends are go along with social status. Pressure to fit in and be normal is crushing in our society, especially with young minds; we tend to really take into account what other people say and think of us. Part of the idea of popularity is possibly based on the clothes we wear; style and trends play a huge role in our social lives. Before we even begin to talk to a person we are judging them based on their clothes, makeup, hair and overall appearance. Appearance does not just affect how others perceive us, but how we see ourselves as well. We can spend hours grooming to look good for the day, to make us confident. Our appearance is important to us, and not only do we spend time on it, but we spend money as well. The pressure we receive among our social groups in undeniable. To fit into a certain friend group, some may often feel the pressure to conform, whether
STUDENT LIFE By Macy How it is the need to dress or even change behaviour to something more neutral/ basic. As humans we tend to naturally conform, whether it is conscious or unconscious. We choose to conform by default as we almost strive to follow the crowd. We constantly seek the approval of others. The pressure to conform can especially be expressed through popular social groups. In speaking to my peers, I learned that the clothes we wear and our styles have a great impact on our social status. Popularity tends to go along with trends and teens are judged by their peers to
determine their place in the social hierarchy. Kids find themselves in an unstable environment, often not having close friends to depend on and trust fully. This can lead to self-esteem issues for some, yet, we do not necessarily only see this in our social lives, but in our schoolwork as well. Most often, we see that there are moulds to fill in our education system. We must take certain courses and we are stressed to achieve good grades. Yes, we can benefit from aiming high, but not to the point where we are put under great amounts of unhealthy stress. It is okay to follow trends or be popular, but we should be ourselves. We are so much more likely to succeed if we do what we love and what makes us happy. We do not need to change who we are and how we look to make friends. It sounds cliché, but we are more likely to keep the friends we make if we be ourselves. Macy How is a grade 10 student at Brooks Secondary School.

Ernest Burgmann
January 28, 1939 - October 15, 2017 After a brave 23-year battle, Ernie succumbed to the horse accident/head injury/stroke he sustained in 1994. He was predeceased by his parents Rudolph and Agatha, brother Rudy and nephew Richard. Ernie will be sorely missed by his wife Arlene, daughter Jackie, sons Brian (Jen) and Troy (his son Dylan, our grandson), brothers Fred (Donna), Gig (Ida) and Art, sister Anne and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ernie’s strength, determination and sense of humour will be missed by many. A huge thank you to Evergreen Care Unit staff and Dr. DuToit for the loving care he received. A special warm thanks to all the volunteers and Evergreen staff who made the games, parties, music, lunch outings, fun and laughter possible, and also to the Stroke Club, his favourite Tuesday outing. No service by Ernie’s request. There will be a woodland memorial at a future date and an Evergreen tea, also at a future date. If you wish, a donation can be made in Ernie’s honour to the staff and entertainment department of Evergreen Care Unit, 4970 Joyce Avenue, 604.485.2208.

Joanne was predeceased by her parents Ernie and Agnes Silvester and her husband Mark Tenning. Left to mourn her are her siblings Bill (Angela), Don (Penny), Christine (Bill), Bob (Dot), Dave (Jackie) and Ernie (Kim) and numerous nieces and nephews. Joanne had many various jobs but was happiest being part of a crew on a fishing boat. She had a great sense of humour and liked to make people smile and laugh.
