Family business celebrates milestone Evolution continues throughout Taws’ 45-year history Powell River’s business landscape has changed a lot since 1971, and throughout 45 years in business, Taws has continuously adapted and changed along with it. To celebrate the milestone, Taws is holding a one-day-only 45th anniversary sale from 9:30 am-5:30 pm on Saturday, November 12. “Everything from bikes, apparel, hockey equipment and accessories will be on sale,” says general manager Dean English. “Merchandise will be 25 to 50 per cent off, storewide.” Along with changes in products and services, the name of the store has also evolved, from Taw’s Gun and Cycle when Dean’s father, Read, established the store in 1971, to Taw’s Cycle and Sports a few years after Dean and his brother Tod purchased the business in 1991. “A few years ago we changed the name again,” says Dean. “It’s just Taws now.” Sales manager Lisanne English, the third sibling involved in the business, focuses on Taws’ promotional division, Inspire Incentives, which helps customers with promotional products and embroidery. “We create promotional products, from custom pens, mugs or calendars to shirts, hats, jackets,” says Lisanne. “We can do it on almost anything, even on USB sticks.” Taws also acquired Impact Signs three years ago and incorporated that business under the same roof to further enhance its customer service options. All embroidery, signage and

digital prints made by Inspire Incentives and Impact Signs are produced on the premises. Screening services are also available at competitive prices. “We do as much as we can in-house,” explains Lisanne, “whether it’s making canvasframed prints or pictures, manufacturing signs or anything to do with embossing.” Although each of the secondgeneration Englishs went on to gain work experience in other fields over the years, when called upon they were always part of the family business, in either full- or part-time capacities. All three began working in the store as teenagers. “It was and is a family business, one of the oldest in town,” says Dean. “Sometimes our dad needed help.” Dean was in grade nine when he

first learned the art of sharpening skates and began tinkering with bicycles in the shop. “There are bike mechanic programs now, but not at that time,” explains Dean. “I started wrenching on bikes in about 1979 and learned from experience.” Along with those 37 years of maintenance and repair experience, Taws offers the largest inventory of new bicycles in town, and all the accessories that go with them. Several changes in merchandise took place as the business developed, starting with becoming a full-on hockey shop soon after the brothers became owners. “We had some hockey prior to that, and the skate sharpening, but then we became a true hockey shop with a full inventory of equipment, skates and sticks,” says Dean. “We also have access

to all major brands; anything to do with hockey, we either have it in stock or can bring it in.” Offering the embroidery services was the next major addition, starting with one machine in 1998. A few years later, after the store expanded into part of the old Monk’s Super Service building, additional space allowed for a further expansion of the hockey, bicycle and apparel areas and more room to expand the embroidery department. “We went from one machine to three,” says Dean, “and added a full-time stitcher to the staff.” The busy store is located at 4597 Marine Avenue. Hours are 9:30 am-5:30 pm Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 604.485.2555, go to tawsonline.com, or search on for the business on Facebook.

whenever I felt like it, and it was done fairly quickly. I enjoyed it so much that I’m doing another one. Now I’m in the midst of a more serious, longer graphic novel that is much heavier in subject matter.” Inspired by comics such as Felix the Cat when she was growing up, Brown says she has become disillusioned with most modern-day comic strips. “There are a couple I still read, but I find most of them to be insipid,” she says. “There’ve taken all the fun out of comic strips, for the most part. They used to be a lot more hard-hitting and cartoonists could get away with a lot more.” A special book signing on Saturday will give Brown the chance to talk to

those interested in her comics and cartoons, as well as chat about her plans to leave the condo and move back into something more suitable for her and Edward. “It sounds like I’m just moving because Edward doesn’t like the condo,” says Brown with a laugh, “but I just feel the condo life isn’t quite right for me at this time. It’s been almost like a holiday for us, but it’s time to get back out there.”

Longtime Peak cartoonist Wendy Brown is well known for her statements on local politics on our editorial pages every week, but her new comic book features entirely different subject matter. Edward the Kat: King of the Kondo is a tale of the cartoonist and her cat’s move a couple of years ago from living in a house with a yard to a fourthfloor condo with a balcony. The 30-page collection of comics is a humorous romp through the life and times of the two companions and is meant for a mature audience. “I actually do have a cat called Edward and he’s been my only housemate for the past six years or so,” says Brown. “Artists always draw the things around them, especially cartoonists, so I started drawing him when I lived in the house, then this idea came up after we moved to the condo. It’s a comic memoir more than anything.” A much different process than her weekly cartoons, Brown found the task of putting together a book of comics a lot less deadline-driven. “It was fun. I didn’t put a lot of pressure on myself to get it done by a particular time; I just started drawing it,” says Brown. “I just did it

Painter pays homage to WWI aviators Texada artist depicts Vimy Ridge air battle with latest work CINDY BABYN Peak contributer

Leading up to the 100th anniversary of Canada’s victory at Vimy Ridge in France during World War I (WWI), a local Canadian artist is busy planning an important commemorative work. Te x a d a r e s i d e n t O.C . (Doby) Dobrostansk i is creating a painting that c a pt u r e s t he e s s enc e of courageous aviators who flew above ground troops at Vimy Ridge. Four Canadian divisions, numbering 100,000 troops, attacked the Germans together as a unified front for the first time. While most Canadian soldiers fought fearsome ground battles in trenches and muddy fields, some took to the skies. Canadian general Arthur Currie learned of aerial photo scouting from the French and applied this tactic to help Canadians discover German positions in advance of the Vimy battle. Of the 66,000 Canadians killed during WWI, almost 3,600 were killed at Vimy Ridge in April of 1917;

more than 7,000 more were wounded. Aerial intelligence was key to the Canadian offensive that forced the Germans to retreat. To mark this important achievement, France donated 250 acres of land to Canada to build and maintain the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, which was completed in 1936. As Remembrance Day approaches, Dobrostanski is busy researching ideas for his painting. The main feature will be the Sopwith Pup aircraft that flew over Vimy Ridge. Dobrostanski is reading about WWI battles, examining aircraft insignias, and recently visited the Canadian Museum of Flight, where a replica of the Sopwith Pup is being built to 87.5 percent of the original size from scratch. The project is part of larger plans for the Vimy 2017 commemoration activities being scheduled in France and across Canada. Dobrostanski has set a personal deadline for finishing the painting by February 15. “I want to make the painting of this plane and WWI battle at Vimy as historically accurate as I can,” said Dobrostanski. “Though I’m not exclusively an aviation artist, of the approximately 50 planes I’ve painted so far, I consider this project to be the apex of my career. I’m very excited about it.” Working from his visual-

art studio, Dobrostanski will set the scene for his Vimy painting about 50 feet above the battlefield, as some of the “dogfighting” actually took place that low to the ground. Canadian WWI ace Joe Fall, from Cobble Hill, BC, will be depicted flying a Sopwith, which had the names of his sisters Betty and Phyllis painted on it. Fall, who shot down 36 enemy aircraft and two observation balloons in just five months, is the only pilot in history to receive, from Buckingham Palace, the Distinguished Service Cross with two bars for gallantry in the air. Another Canadian pilot will be depicted flying nearby in a Nieuport 17 C-1. Together the pilots will face down a German Fokker fighter plane. Below, Canadian soldiers will be depicted fighting against the Germans. In the background, viewers will see a ghostly shadow of the future Vimy Memorial. The finished painting will first be exhibited at the Canadian Museum of Flight. D obr o s t a n s k i i s w el l known in the aviation community and a member of the Canadian Aerospace Artists Association, which celebrates Canada’s aviation heritage through art. During his 16 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Dobrostanski worked as an aero-engine technician and instructor at 435

Squadron in Edmonton on the Beechcraft C-45 Expeditor, Canadair C-114 Tutor, Douglas C-47 Dakota, Grumman SA-16 Albatross, Lockheed T-33 jet trainer and Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Dobrostanski has also taken to the skies himself. In the past he was a glider pilot. One of his most memorable experiences in the sky was achieving a flight time of five hours and seven minutes, which takes a lot of skill, and the bladder of a camel. When Dobrostanski talks about what he loves most about flight, he provides a glimpse of a man who favours the mind over emotion and technical skills over drama and dreaming.

“Flying is a challenge intellectually, physically and technically,” he said. “It’s the ability to master motion, the limits of the individual and the technical design of the aircraft, whether powered or a glider. Flying is beyond transportation, it’s a total intellectual immersion where the pilot has to understand physics, engineering and meteorology.” B e y o n d t h i s , Dobrostanski also believes that flying is “a very beautiful aesthetic,” which is perhaps where the paint brush comes in. As a member of Royal Canadian Legion Bra nch 232 on Tex ada, Dobrostansk i interacts regularly with fellow men

and women who served in the military. He has seen firsthand how veterans are not always fully supported by our government upon their return, which is why he promotes all efforts of the legion to acquire new members. His view is to raise funds and broaden community support to provide our veterans a better quality of life. Dobrostanski said that his commemorative Vimy painting will not be a glorification of war, but is intended to invite Canadians to think seriously about the conditions upon which our country enters into war and of the often devastating consequences on soldiers and civilians, whether domestic or international.

Skip the holiday chaos Plan ahead and prepare. A common phrase we all know, but how often do we implement this practice? The upcoming holiday season is a good reminder of how this theory can work when put into practice, especially when we want a waste-free holiday. Imagine not having to deal with the aftermath of mountains of recycling and trash bags. Planning a waste-free holiday can also offer cost savings and do good for the planet moving into the new year. A final push of encouragement toward doing some early preparing is always welcome, and what might be the best perk of all, you won’t be caught up in the frenzy of last-minute shoppers, decisions and lineups. Gifting and celebrating can be wastefree, fun and easy. A little planning will take you a long way; now is the time to start. Here are some ideas, tips and tricks to help get you rolling:

Gift experiences Dinner for two (out or home-cooked), a day out in our trails, a show/concert, a massage, the spa; options are infinite.

LET’S TALK TRASH

Avoid tape Secure wrapping with cotton twine, hemp, yarn, elastic bands or odds and ends that can decompose in the compost or be reused.

Celebration decor Look outside, beautiful adornments can be found. Pinecones, branches, cedar boughs and arbutus berries, all seasonally festive, can simply be tossed out your door when they are done.

Start collecting wrapping material

Create memories, not garbage this holiday season. Zero-waste gifting can be time-consuming, hence the reason for thinking about the subject at the start of November. This is also the month when our winter craft fairs start to appear. Be sure to check those out for package-free, one-of-a-kind handmade purchases from our local artists.

Old gift bags, paper bags, newspaper, boxes and reusable material such as a bag, tea towel, facecloth or napkin (two gifts in one).

Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

Give homemade Jams, bath salts, granola, recipes in a jar (soup, cookies, brownies, etc.), baked goods, crafted or up-cycled creations, thrift store finds or re-gifting.

Q: I gave my daughter my power of attorney several years ago. Since then I have changed my name and bought a new house. Should I have my power of attorney reviewed by a lawyer? A: Yes. At minimum you will need the titles of any property you own compared to the name on the power of attorney, because if they do not match exactly, the power of attorney may be ineffective for any type of property transactions. You may also need a new power of attorney in your current name for other matters as well. Real talk about the flu shot Do you normally get a flu shot around this time of the year? If you are not one of those people, this would be a good year to get started. We already know which form of the flu we face and this year’s has already proven to be nasty and particularly aggressive. There have already been at least six outbreaks in the Lower Mainland. The dominant strain of flu this year, called H3N2, is known to be especially dangerous for vulnerable people. With this particular illness, people become very sick. Almost everybody can expect to be bedridden with a fever or cough and experience more symptoms than in recent years. Fortunately, BC Centre for Disease Control explains that this year’s vaccine is a good match and should provide good protection. We tend to take for granted that everyone knows about the flu, but that is not necessarily true. The flu is an infection of the nose,

HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet throat and lungs caused by an influenza virus, of which there are countless variations. Symptoms of the flu, which usually begin one to four days after first exposure, include fever, headache, muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, extreme tiredness and cough. Children may also experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Fever and other symptoms may last seven to 10 days; cough and weakness up to two more weeks. I recent ly overhea rd someone in a café stating

with confidence that “getting the flu shot means you are more likely to get the flu.” This is just one example of the misinformation out there, and it is absolutely wrong. Oh, and vaccinations are not a plan by big pharmaceutical companies to profit, a conspiracy theory that is rampant on social media. While the flu shot is a good idea for everyone, some groups are especially susceptible. These include pregnant women, older seniors, very young children, people who have lung or heart diseases and certain chronic health problems, and those with weakened immune systems. Vaccination is also a good idea for anyone who comes into regular contact with these people. After all, you don’t want to be the one who infected a vulnerable person, do you? There is a supply of publicly funded vaccine available for those who qualify based on the description above. Each year about 3,500 people across Canada die

from influenza and its related complications. One of the most effective tools is the annual flu shot. Because of changes in the virus, vaccines are created each year in response to the strains we expect to be facing. We can do this because we can watch the progression of the virus from the far east where it usually develops first. Over the next months, the disease will make its

way to North America. This provides lead time to study the various strains and to devise and prepare a vaccine that will protect against as many as three to four strains; that’s our flu shot. This year’s vaccine protects against three strains; the children’s version against four. And by the way, if you are thinking about holding off until you see flu around you, don’t. It takes about

two weeks to be fully protected after receiving the shot. Flu shots are available at your doctor’s office, walkin clinics, pharmacies or at VCH flu clinics. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for rural Vancouver Coastal Health, including Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Seato-Sky, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.

Fritz

We are sad to announce the passing of Uncle Fritz, a mostly misunderstood legend of Powell Lake. Born Franciscus Spreeuw on October 4, 1946, in Haarlem, Netherlands, passed peacefully on September 11, 2016, at Powell River General Hospital. Fritz was predeceased by his father, mother and three of his brothers. He is survived by his son, four brothers, countless nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours. If you lived in Powell River for a while, you most likely would have seen him riding his bicycle and towing a trailer with a dog or two tagging along, and wearing his body armour, as he called it: life jacket (also needed for his boat ride to Three Mile Bay) hardhat and foam knee pads for ear muffs, shoulders, elbows and of course knees. If you lived in Wildwood, on Powell Lake, or along his route, you would have known him personally. If his looks didn’t scare you away and you happened to talk to him, he would happily tell you his life story and it wouldn’t be short. Thank you to all who helped him enjoy his life and in his passing. We love you, Fritz. Rest in peace. To share some of the memories, stories and fun times you had with Fritz, a drop in celebration of life gathering will be held at the Red Lion Pub in Wildwood on Saturday, November 26, from 1-4 pm.

Albert Silvio Silvestrini Albert Silvio Silvestrini, 68, of Powell River, passed away on Sunday, October 30, at Powell River General Hospital. Born in Floreffe, Belgium, to Erminio and Iolanda Silvestrini, he lived most of his life in Powell River. Albert loved his hometown and always referred to it as “God’s country.” Albert worked for MacMillan Bloedel for more than 30 years, spending the last years of his career with the company in the mill stores. He was passionate about the outdoors. Fishing on Powell Lake was one of his favourite pastimes and he also enjoyed hunting and camping at some of the smaller lakes in the surrounding area. Albert took pride in his woodworking skills and his ability to fix anything, from cars to his grandson’s toys; he would always tell you, no matter what, to “Save the pieces!” Albert was always willing to listen to and help anyone who needed him. Albert is survived by his loving wife of 37 years Sherry (née Whitson), his two daughters Gina (Spencer) and Sara (Russell) and his grandson Ryan. Also left to grieve are his sister Linda and her family, Jennifer (Greg), Maddison and Mercedes, as well as many other family and friends, both here and in Europe. Funeral services for Albert will be held in Powell River on Saturday, November 12, at 1:30 pm at Church of the Assumption. A reception will be held at St. Joseph’s Hall beside the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Powell River Stroke Recovery Club (c/o Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 164, 6811 Alexander Street, Powell River, BC V8A 2A9).

Vinyl Flip record swap

Vinyl record collectors flipped through thousands of albums at the second annual Vinyl Flip on the afternoon of Saturday, November 5. Residents passionate about their music were after obscure, rare and even price-reduced records. In addition to albums brought by organizers Bob Davey and Mark Lemna and other local collectors, three featured collections were brought in by record collectors in Nanaimo. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS
