More than just fun and games Facilities and programs help build and strengthen a healthy community Some may view recreation as the fun and games department that provides opportunities for physical activity, socialization and fun. Evidence suggests the benefits of recreation have evolved to much more. Recreation enhances mental, physical and social well-being, builds strong familial and community cohesion and increases opportunities for people to enhance their connection with nature. Here is a closer look at some of the benefits City of Powell River’s parks, recreation and culture department provide, as well as a look into what the community can expect in 2017.

Enhancing health Over the last 18 months, the department has expanded its fitness services to include many health-oriented workshops and specialty programs. As many people are aware, regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of sedentary living, obesity, chronic diseases and mental health concerns. “Our department recognizes these important aspects of being active, which is why we try to offer a wide variety of dropin and registered health and fitness programs every season,” says manager of recreation Neil Pukesh. Powell River Community Forest recently approved funding for new fitness equipment at Powell River Recreation Complex. “We’re excited about this opportunity,” says Pukesh, “and will be asking people very soon as to what new equipment they would like to see.” Strengthening community Recreation also has a leadership role to play in building a sense of community. The department has aligned with other community initiatives to avoid duplication of efforts and helps to build social networks and volunteerism. “We’ve been working very closely with

Building sustainability Throughout the year, local recreation facilities and parks serve as a catalyst for economic development that promotes tourism and boosts spending at local restaurants and retail shops. “Our facilities and parks play host to so many great festivals, tournaments and other events every year,” says Pukesh. “In many cases, people who attend choose to return to explore our city even further.” This January, a Far off Broadway show is set to take place. behaviours. “Our department recently installed two new playgrounds at Sunset Park and Mowat Bay and our nature programs, such as mushroom and salal picking, continue to be popular,” says Pukesh. The addition of the new 1.5-kilometre, multi-use pathway at the complex has also increased opportunities for those with mobility issues to connect with nature. Plans for 2017 call for the construction of a new park at Marine Avenue and Alberni Street and the development of a new discgolf course. “We know that many of our residents love outdoor recreational opportunities. Hiking, biking, gardening and walking are among the favourites,” says Pukesh. “That said, we are always looking for ways to connect people with nature as much as possible.”
Details about new and returning programs available through parks, recreation and culture can be found in the winter 2017 Active Living Guide, which is available online and at the complex, library, city hall and inside this issue of Peak Weekender. For further information, call 604.485.2891.

Therapeutic riding holds open house Annual festive event showcases program that helps residents For 25 yea rs, Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association has been introducing disabled children and adults to the joys of horseback riding. At the association’s upcoming fourth annual open house, the public can find out more about the program and help raise much-needed funds. “The open house is a way to open up the facility for the public,” says volunteer coordinator Dusty Reid, “as well as the parents and caregivers of the riders, to see our facility and come meet our staff and horses.” The festive event features pictures with Santa and the horses, complimentary cake and hotdogs, stable tours, a bake sale, silent auction, kids craft and games table and more. “It’s always been a really fun and busy event, so that’s why we’ve continued to do it, because everyone enjoys it,” says Reid. “It’s community, it’s fun and it really gets people into the holiday spirit.” The association helps more than 70 riders weekly between September and June and relies on the hard work of volunteers and staff, says association president Nellie Valentine. Community support since the association’s inception has been crucial to the success of its programming, she says. “We’ve had amazing support ever
Q. I was a pedestrian and was injured when a vehicle struck me. Do I have a claim? A. If the driver of the vehicle was deemed to be at fault for the accident you would have a claim against the driver and the drivers’ insurer, usually ICBC. It is important that you obtain information at the scene of the collision, especially if the police do not attend (for example the licence plate and names of any witnesses). If you were involved in a motor vehicle accident and have any questions, you should contact us to discuss your situation.

since the beginning of Powell River Therapeutic Riding in 1991. The community has been very generous in helping us,” says Valentine. “Without the contributions of our volunteers, children and adults would not be riding. Some of the riders require three volunteers to get them up on to a horse.” All proceeds raised during the event are being matched by Scotiabank. “They have supported us every year and we really appreciate that,” says Valentine. “They have made this event into such a great fundraiser for us.” Of special note is the association’s annual “Hay Is for Horses” program, a unique stocking stuffer where individuals can sponsor a riding horse by purchasing a bale of hay for $25 or a bag of grain for $32. In addition to money raised, the open house is the perfect opportunity
for Powell River Therapeutic Riding to showcase itself to the public, says Valentine. “We want to show off this beautiful facility that we have here, and also show off our therapy horses, because they are the backbone of our program and a big part of the team,” she says. “It’s also a chance to meet the staff and board members and show people exactly what we do here.”

Reducing travel waste
Planning a trip this winter? Here are some travel tips to lighten your environmental footprint. In our disposable society it may seem hard to not accumulate trash while travelling, but it is possible. Have you ever cringed while watching a flight attendant wheel down the aisle and toss all those single-use plastic cups and snack wrappers into one big garbage bag? A little preparation can save money and ease your conscience. Bringing a reusable water bottle and a thermos for coffee will keep you hydrated without the waste. By packing some healthy bulk snacks you can skip the extra cost and avoid packaging onboard. But don’t stop there. Pack a reusable straw, cutlery, shopping bag and lowwaste toiletries. Many websites will demonstrate how to make a zero-waste travel kit or share stories on living and travelling plastic-free. Whether travelling by ferry, bus, train, car or air, you can choose to lessen the environmental impact by purchasing carbon offsets. A carbon offset is a credit an individual or organization can purchase to negate a carbon footprint. When the number of carbon offsets obtained is equal to an individual or organization’s carbon footprint, they are considered carbon neutral. According to davidsuzuki.org, many types of activities can generate carbon offsets, though some may be better than others. Renewable energy (wind, solar, small
LET’S TALK TRASH hydro, geothermal and biomass) can create carbon offsets by displacing fossil fuels. Energy-efficiency projects such as methane capture from landfills or livestock, destruction of potent greenhouse gases such as halocarbons, and carbon-sequestration projects (through reforestation or agriculture) create carbon offsets through absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Check out Suzuki’s downloadable guide to help Canadian consumers, businesses and organizations assess the quality of carbon offsets and the vendors who sell them. Travelling by plane seems to have the largest climate impact, so for the biggest reductions, consider a creative staycation or bike tour. Just don’t forget rain gear. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

END OF AN ERA
Over 30 years of providing beautiful live trees for the Christmas holidays, this will be the last season for Willow Hollow Christmas Tree Farm. Jack and Sharon Robinson, along with their children, started this farm as a hobby and have produced five beautiful species of trees throughout the years. Due to Jack’s health concerns it is time to close the book on this chapter. Jack and Sharon would like to express their gratitude to all of their loyal customers throughout the years. It has been an amazing journey.

Yvette Avril Peggy Bennett (Dr. Y. Franklin) April 20, 1926 – November 12, 2016 It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother at the age of 90. Yvette was born in London, England, the youngest of four sisters. She lived through the blitz of World War II, writing her final exams in bomb shelters, and was one of two women in a class of 200 medical students at King’s College, London, graduating in 1949. She married in 1951, and continued training in paediatrics at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London. In 1955, much to her surprise, Yvette found herself in Twillingate, Newfoundland, when her husband accepted a surgical post. They moved to Swift Current, then Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where they had a family and shared a medical practice for 15 years. The final move was to Powell River, where they settled on beautiful Pebble Beach and enjoyed practising medicine and being members of the community for many years. Yvette was involved in the Sailing Club, Power Squadron, Homemakers Society, and even designing costumes for the school musicals. Her wonderful Thursday hiking group was central to her life, where she made some of her closest friends. Yvette was predeceased by her son Alan in 1988 and husband Dr. W. Bennett in 2012. She was the last of the four Franklin sisters. She is survived by her daughters Mary (David), Susan (Chris) and six grandchildren. Also mourning her loss are many extended family members in England and New Zealand. The family would like to extend special thanks to John and Mike DeVries and Garry Anderson for all the care and support they provided Mum in Powell River. We also want to thank Dr. Duncan Etches, Susan Emanuel and the wonderful staff at South Granville Park Lodge in Vancouver for the loving care in the last months of Mum’s life. A celebration of life will be held in Powell River in the spring, when her flowers are in bloom.
