Signage specialists join forces SignPro emerges from collaboration between J&D Signs and sign-writing tradesperson When the opportunity presented itself, SignPro owners Jennifer Furcall and Craig McCahon did not hesitate to join forces to offer new professional sign solutions to customers in the Powell River area. After following her lifelong creative and artistic passion by gaining several years of experience in the sign industry, Jennifer started J&D Signs with her fiancé Dave Geertsma one year ago. Expanding the business is a natural progression, she says. “We wanted to take it up another level and Craig was looking to start something of his own at the same time, so we collaborated and started something together,” says Jennifer, who was born and raised in Montreal and moved to Powell River 16 years ago. “We have a brand new name to reflect our partnership; J&D Signs has morphed into SignPro.” Craig was born and raised in Powell River and brings 33 years of industry experience to the business. After graduation, he moved to Australia, where he gained his apprenticeship, became a tradesperson and managed his own sign business in Cairns for 27 years. Craig says offering creative solutions is important to help guide business and corporate clients, as well as organizations and individuals, toward their goals. “We help create the ideas for a lot of customers, rather than just asking what they want; sometimes they don’t know,” says Craig. “We work with them to

Subtlety is a factor when designing and choosing words for a sign, he adds. “When you’re doing a vehicle or a building, you have to get the message across in a few words because people are reading it at a glance,” he says. “Less is more in those cases.” While Jennifer and Craig will run the business, Dave, a Red

Saturday, November 25 • 10 am-4 pm Sunday, November 26 • 11 am-3 pm Cranberry Seniors’ Centre, 6792 Cranberry Street (entrance off parking lot) Powell River Kings staff members Sherri Wiebe [left] and Nadine Porchetta promote the Powell River Kings Dream Lottery, which gives residents a chance to win a grand prize of $50,000.
third ($7,500) and fourth ($3,000). Also, $20 tickets are being sold for a 50/50 draw with an estimated pot of $40,000. Currently, the 50/50 pot is already more than $10,000. “We found that most people were more interested in cash prizes rather than a vehicle,” says Villani. “So we thought if that’s what they want, let’s give them what they want.” Net proceeds from the lottery and other raffles are used to acquire capital assets, for team staff wages, travel expenses, equipment and ice rentals. Powell River Kings have one of the highest travel costs in the BC Hockey League due to longer travel and ferry costs. Villani says the society’s goal is to sell all 2,499 lottery tickets and 4,000 50/50 tickets, but in order to do this it

Powell River Kings Dream Lottery will be giving away more than $100,000 this year, and it all begins at the Kings game versus Cowichan on Friday, November 24, with a chance to win $10,000 in the lottery’s early bird draw. The lottery is the junior hockey team’s largest fundraiser of the year and has netted more than $400,000 in operating expenses during the past five years. Due to a recent team bus breakdown, the need for fundraising is stronger than ever. “Ticket sales are going well already this year and we are doing a concentrated push to sell as many as possible because of our bus needing to be replaced,” says Powell River Kings Hockey Club Society president Rob Villani. “We’re excited about where we are at so far, but we would really like to see this lottery sell out to offset the cost of a replacement bus.” This year, the Kings society decided to award all cash prizes, including the $50,000 grand prize draw January 12 and the upcoming early bird prize of $10,000 (the early bird winner is reentered into the main draw). Each person who purchases a $100 ticket has a chance to win the jackpot, as well as prizes for second ($15,000),

Plastic bag alternatives We have all walked into a store without our reusable shopping bags, even those of us who are the most prepared. Well intended as we may be at times, life gets in the way and can foil even the best laid plans. Let’s Talk Trash team provides hope that even when bags are forgotten, incurring the guilt of taking home a single-use shopping bag may not be necessary. A shopper who does not have a reusable bag just has to become a little creative. Many stores have cardboard boxes taking up space in storerooms that employees or owners would be happy to offer for carrying purchases. This might become a regular habit once shoppers realize how sturdy they are. For a small shopping excursion, most of the items might fit in a purse or backpack, or hands can be used for heavier items until arriving at the car or bike for loading. If learning through a little disciplining is best, then wait to shop until the bags are on hand. Another option will soon be available thanks to the Boomerang Bag project. Starting Thursday, November 30, shoppers at

Marine life mistakes them for food, they clog storm drains and come to rest in landfills after only being used a few times. Metro Vancouver and City of Victoria are currently contemplating single-use shopping bag bans and Powell River may not be far behind.

Promoting a home sale on social media Using social media to help sell a house can be a good idea. To sell, a property needs to be seen, and the essence of social media is visibility. Homeowners advertising the sale of their homes on social media should use the platforms to their fullest extent. Here are four ways to create posts that command attention.
POWELL RIVER, BC
Post pictures If the real estate agent or homeowner creates a photo album that shows the home at its best, do not just post a link to it. To entice potential buyers and encourage friends to share the post, include the photos. Buyers will want an in-depth look at the property so as many images as possible should be uploaded. Producing a video to showcase the living space is also a good idea. Also, include relevant keywords in each post to make it easy for shoppers to find.
it interesting and bring the property to life in a way that will compel viewers to share the video.
from prospective buyers. Above all, resist the urge to constantly repost the same ad, which can easily backfire.
Be creative Pictures are one thing, but to be noticed a proper description of the home should also be included. Also, mention information about open house dates. If posting a video, make
Update regularly Post regular updates to keep followers in the loop, but do not overdo it; less is more. Keep things interesting by chronicling a home-staging project or compiling a list of unusual questions
Ask for help Although some friends will share updates spontaneously, stronger results will come from asking followers to pass along the post. Shares will expand the potential buyer pool.
Important documents for selling a home Homeowners who decide to sell a house must gather important documents to provide potential buyers with information concerning the property. • A location certificate, property report or surveyor’s certificate indicates the boundaries of the property and its status regarding current laws and municipal bylaws.

The plight of monogamy
HEART OF THE MATTER By Niseema Emery system. For others, monogamy is really uncomfortable, and there is no shame in that, at least not from me (or my mentor who passed this reminder on to me). The thing I do encourage
is to examine your choices and the story you tell yourself. Is it in alignment with your desires and the actions you take? Sometimes we get so caught up in the “white picket fence” fantasy that is sold to us that we forget to take our actual needs into account. When we see the “serial cheater,” I wonder how life might be different if they were honest with themselves and their partners about their need for non-monogamy. Life might be a lot happier for everyone involved if we valued honesty with self as much as we value the model of monogamy.

why does there need to be a debate in the first place? Is it not possible for people to have their own preferences and needs? At different places in their lives, these needs may shift. Monogamy is not for everyone, just like non-monogamy is not for everyone. I’m not against either of the lifestyles, I just want to bring some perspective to the storyline. A belief system is out there that, from the caveman days, non-monogamy is our species’ natural way of being. Currently, we are living in a largely monogamist society and, according to the above belief system, we are going against our natural way of being. It is also not natural to drink breast milk from another species, however, the dairy business has been booming for years and the planet has not exploded, so it is probably okay to do what feels best for you, regardless of what our ancestors did a million years ago. Each style of relationship has its own challenges and rewards, and for some (myself included) non-monogamy might just be too stressful on the nervous
84BC04
Monogamy has been facing some challenges these days. In many circles it is seen as outdated and even unnatural for our human species. A s a sex a nd relat ionship coach who completed much of her training in San Francisco, I often felt like the black sheep among my peers because my personal preferences for being in a relationship lean more toward the monogamy model. With that said, I’m also somewhat envious of those folks who seem to glide through non-monogamy with ease. “Jealousy? What jealousy?” But, of course, I’m just projecting my own fantasies onto what it might be like; real life is likely much more varied. In all seriousness, something I notice about the debate of monogamy versus non-monogamy is that it seems one model has to be better or more superior to the other. In other words, one is right and the other is wrong. I find this an unfortunate way of thinking that does not leave much room for curiosity or exploration on either side of the debate. Also,

THE LAW CORNER Q. I have written my will and named an executor who lives in the United States. Will this complicate my estate? A. When you name an executor who is not a resident of Canada, there can be tax consequences to your estate, so we recommend that a non-resident executor check with an accountant prior to accepting the appointment as executor. If the non-resident executor does decide to act, they may need to travel to Canada to deal with certain duties or assets. They will also need to get a CRA clearance certificate prior to disposing of estate assets such as real estate. If you have questions about writing your will or handling an estate, please contact me.

Pruning and removing hazard trees and plants Texada Protecting our power lines When: October 27 to March 31, 2018 Time: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. As important as they are, trees and other plants can cause significant power interruptions. Contact between trees and power lines can be very dangerous, which is why over the next few months, we’ll be pruning and removing trees and other plants in Texada Island. At BC Hydro, we ensure trees and plants are pruned using the best arboriculture (tree care) practices possible. We employ skilled workers—
CROW CHRONICLE: When this crow was found lying on the tarmac at Beach Gardens Resort and Marina, it was so young its eyes were still closed. The bird’s rescuer spotted the tiny black bundle of feathers while out for a walk. Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS) founder Merrilee Prior rehydrated and nourished the nestling until it was strong enough to be flown to Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Victoria, where it was mentored by other crows and rehabilitated. The crow was flown back to Powell River a little more than two months later and released where it was initially found. Within seconds, its parents and two siblings greeted their family member before the group flew off together. Crows have strong family and community networks and can be seen joining up and flying north of town past Townsite every evening to their communal night roost. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Remembrance Day ceremony
Hundreds gathered at Dwight Hall on Remembrance Day to honour members of Canada’s armed forces who lost their lives during World War I and II. The service began inside before participants and attendees proceeded outdoors for the reading of names that appear on the cenotaph and placing of official wreaths. Under a grey sky, the “Last Post” was sounded and followed by two minutes of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, which marks the end of World War I in 1918.
