Young leaders prepare for future First Credit Union program offers mentorship to graduating students I n pa r t ner sh ip w it h Brooks Secondary School, First Credit Union is once again offering its CULEAD Young Leaders Program to a group of graduating grade 12 students. Since 2004, more than 90 local youth have participated in the 10-month mentorship program, which runs from October until August. “Brook s Seconda r y School is a wonderful partner because its counsellors really promote and believe in the program,” says Tara Chernoff, First Credit Union marketing and community impact manager. After an information session at the school in October, followed by an application process and interviews, nine students with plans for post-secondary education were selected for the 2016/2017 school year. In addition, one international student will participate in the first half of the program before returning home. To help prepare them for future careers, individuals accepted into the program receive practical work experience and mentoring from successful business professionals on a wide range of topics. “For the first half of the program we meet twice per month to work on skills, such as public spea king, and for workshops on personal leadership and

growth, event planning and business topics they might not receive in school,” explains Chernoff, who mentors the students through the program’s public speaking component. “It is a great program; we receive fantastic feedback.” Workshop and presentation themes depend on the interests of the group, but can include business etiquette, communications, branding, power of rapport, online portfolio develop-
ment, project planning, community development, networking and interview skills. “We ask them at the beginning of the year what they are interested in and try to gear it to that,” says Chernoff. “Last year, one of the students was really involved in [International Choral] Kathaumixw, so we held an event during the festival.” The one mandatory component is public speak-
ing, which is, according to organizers, an incredibly important aspect of the program. “It’s funny because, at the start of the year, they come in and are not comfortable at all,” says Chernoff, “but by the end, when asked what the most valuable part of the program was, they all say public speaking. Even though they are nervous at the beginning, they become better at it.” Throughout the second

half of the program, students have opportunities to use their newly acquired sk i l l s du r i ng su m mer events First Credit Union is involved with in the community. For each event, students take turns leading or co-leading while the rest of the group provides support. “They each get a chance to practise some of the skills and gain work experience to put on a resumé, then we flip it and at the next event someone else will lead,”

explains Chernoff. “People will see them around town, especially in the summer, sporting our community impact shirts.” Upon successful completion of the program, each student involved will receive a cash scholarship. “The scholarship amount varies each year depending on the size of our organization; as our organization grows we have more money to give back to the commu n it y,” says Cher nof f. “The more people who do business with us the more of these kinds of programs we can offer in the community.” At the end of the process for the current group, in addition to the experience and skills gained throughout the 10 months, each young leader will receive $2,000 in scholarship funding. “Everything we do in the community ties back to why we exist in the first place: to strengthen the well-being of our members and make a meaningful community impact,” says Chernoff. “By providing these skills and opportunities to our youth we feel that we are helping to build that capacity in our community, which is really important to make an impact; that’s why we are so passionate about doing this.” For more information about the CULEAD program, go to firstcu.ca.

According to Celebration of Cultural Diversity organizer Carma Sacree, a city’s level of multiculturalism is a testament to its vitality and health. If the sixth annual cultural event, taking place Saturday at Powell River Recreation Complex, is an indication, Powell River is healthier than it has ever been. The event is organized by a group of dedicated volunteers and cosponsored by Powell River Council for Arts, Culture and Heritage, City of Powell River, Powell River Diversity Initiative and Powell River Immigrant Services. Featuring a variety of entertainment, food, workshops, displays and more, those behind the annual event are expecting an even larger turnout than last year, which saw more residents then ever attend. “This event is so important, especially in these troubled times that we are having globally,” says Sacree. “It’s a way for immigrant families in the community to feel included and prideful of their culture, and to share with the community.” This year’s event features nine different food stations, prepared by a variety of local families of different cultures. Sacree says she is particularly excited about recent Syrian refugee families sharing their cultural heritage. “One really fabulous thing is the new Syrian families in our commu-

nity have pooled together and they are going to be selling their cultural food,” she says, “so that’s really exciting.” A new contest this year, Dining for Diversity, has 17 participating local restaurants contributing more than $1,000 in gift certificates. The grand prize will be awarded to one lucky winner who has made a small donation and completed the event’s Treasure Trail, which leads attendees through the different displays. “We are keeping the Treasure Trail simple so kids can do it with their parents,” says Sacree, “and we really want people to interact with all of the displays.” Two live stages inside the complex will feature a variety of cultural entertainment and workshops and a children’s room will feature a theme
of What Makes Me Me, exploring the similarities between all people. The overall mood will be festive, explains Sacree. “It’s a party; it’s just so much fun,” says Sacree. “Everyone is mingling and there’s the entertainment and the food; it’s just an incredible day for all ages and it’s a free event for the community. We hope to have as many people come out and enjoy it as possible.”

Path to zero waste requires shift
7105 Nootka Street LET’S TALK TRASH
Brooks Winter Nights of Music
What is the environmental impact of collecting a box of coffee pods and sending it to be recycled? Where does it go? What does it get turned into? Most recycled items are turned into products that are not recyclable. This is not the closed-loop system recycling set out to be. We may be able to transform our waste into lots of glittery and exciting items to fill our consumer desires through upcycling and recycling, but if an item was designed to become trash it probably will become that eventually. If we are committed to the path to zero waste, it will take a paradigm shift. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

THE LAW CORNER Q. My uncle died in July of this year and my aunt was named as the executor, I was named as the alternate. My aunt was very ill and died in September before she was granted probate of my uncle’s estate. Am I now the executor? A. Yes, section 105 of the Wills Estates and Succession Act says that if an executor survives the will maker and then dies without being granted probate, the appointment of the executor terminates and the administration of the estate passes as if the person had not been appointed. Therefore, you as the alternate, would be the executor entitled to apply for probate. If you have questions about the administration of an estate, please call my office.

’Tis the season to bake cookies at home, which is good timing. For the past year Town Centre Recycling Depot has collected residents’ cookie and cracker packaging for recycling. This recycling campaign was provided by Terracycle and funded by brands, manufacturers and retailers around the world in order to collect and recycle hard-to-recycle materials that manufacturers produce. Unfortunately, this free campaign has ended. Continuing to recycle the cookie and cracker stream would be an unsustainable cost to taxpayers, so the collection will be discontinued as of December 1. Terracycle does offer many campaigns for hard-to-recycle items that can be purchased for businesses or homes, from office supplies and toothpaste to action figures, earplugs, party decorations, flip flops, used chewing gum and even cigarette butts. The company reuses, upcycles and recycles waste and does not incinerate or send it to a landfill. Terracycle also makes sure money from sponsored campaigns collected on its end goes to a local charity. This is amazing, but if millions of dollars are being spent on research and development to increase our recycling capacity to include any kind of packaging or item, then where is the push to reduce what we consume? If we find recycling options for all this unnecessary waste are we encouraging and validating its purpose?

Roses and
Beautiful wild roses to the groups, clubs and individuals who plan, make and maintain the trails in our area. It is so appreciated.
RASPBERRIES Roses to the young man who helped me find the switch to turn off the hazard lights in my new car. Raspberries to the person who put up a derogatory sign on Wildwood hill about another individual. Get a life! How about if you instead try to do something good for the community?
Raspberries to those people who drive fast in the mall parking lots. Many beautiful Roses to the anonymous person or persons who sent us to sunny California to lift our spirits! Your generosity will never be forgotten. Roses: I was not having a very good start to my day recently. I rode my bike to the mall and when I came back out
the rear brake had jammed into the rim of the back wheel. Just then a man who worked at the mall came over and, with his two bare hands, pulled the brake free from the rim. I was then able to ride my bike away and I hate to imagine what the rest of the day would have been like without this man’s help. Carloads of Roses for the three kind people who stopped their vehicles to see if I needed help when I fell exiting a crosswalk on Joyce Avenue to go to the grocery store. Another carload to the checkout clerk who later bandaged my thumb. How blessed we all are to live in such a caring community.

Len Romanyshyn
Margaret Yolande (Landi) Bledsoe 1933 – 2016 Landi (aged 83) passed away peacefully on Friday, November 18, in Powell River. Landi was born, raised and spent almost her entire career in Powell River. She was one of Powell River’s quiet leaders, gently influencing many of the lives and spaces that shape our community. Landi was a graduate of the University of British Columbia, earning two undergraduate degrees (BA, BSW) before achieving her Master of Social Work in 1963. As a social worker, Landi worked for the government of BC for many years before retiring to work in private practice. Her contributions to and connections within the Powell River community were rich and diverse, including Maranatha Prayer Group, Open Door Healing Rooms, Raging Grannies (PR Gaggle), Powell River Fine Arts Association(quilting), Powell River Child, Youth and Family Services Society (board of directors) and Malaspina Naturalists, as well as various other environmental, political, spiritual, social service and animal welfare associations and movements. Landi was equal parts artist, intellect, feminist, and advocate. Landi is survived by her family, three generations of nieces and nephews, led by Jillian, Alison and Mitchell, her cousins and a community of friends and colleagues. We offer our thanks to the staff at Willingdon Creek Village (especially House 5) and a special note of acknowledgement and gratitude to her companion/caregiver/friend Lilia Cardoso-Gould. Everyone who knew Landi is welcome to join us in celebrating and honouring her life: • Monday, November 28, 2016 – Prayers will be held at 7 pm at Church of the Assumption • Tuesday, November 29, 2016 – Funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 pm at Church of the Assumption, with burial at Powell River Regional Cemetery, and a reception to follow at Assumption Parish (St. Joseph’s) Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Landi to Powell River Child, Youth and Family Services Society, prcyfss.com.

Powell River Craft Beer Festival
Beer lovers were in nirvana on Saturday, November 12, at Powell River Craft Beer Festival. A total of 15 breweries participated, including Powell River’s Townsite Brewing and brewers from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. They poured for brew enthusiasts who packed into the Arc Community Theatre for all things craft beer. The event was put on by the Powell River chapter of the Campaign for Real Ale Society (CAMRA) of BC. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS
