City of Powell River staff is preparing for its first annual Christmas Tree LightUp at Powell River Recreation Complex.
Festivities begin at 6 pm outside the complex’s lower entrance with the official light-up at 6:30 pm, followed by the free skate from 7-9 pm. “People really love the atmosphere at the Winter Wonderland skate,” says Craig. “We bring in a lot of trees and decorate the skating rink so it feels like you are in an outdoor environment.” Leading up to the Christmas LightUp, the complex is holding a 12 Days of Christmas Scavenger Hunt where Norman the Gnome will be hidden in different parts of the complex and around town. Each day until December 8, those who find the gnome can bring him into the complex to claim their prize. All 12 daily winners will be eligible to win a grand prize the night of the light up.
Craig says the complex staff members are excited to join residents in witnessing the moment when all of the lights go on and White Christmas comes to life. “We’re pretty excited,” he says. “We’re in the middle of making some big candy-cane light posts and, because we’re going with that White Christmas theme, having that simple look will be really beautiful.”

White Christmas will come to life on Friday, December 8, when City of Powell River celebrates it first annual Christmas Light-Up event at Powell River Recreation Complex. Proposed by city council as a social event leading up to the holidays that engages with and shows the council’s appreciation for the community, the light-up will also launch the Winter Wonderland skate with free admission that night. “Winter Wonderland is a really popular event here at the complex so we thought it would be fun to do a big opening hurrah for it and light up the front entrance of the complex,” says community recreation program coordinator Alexander Craig. “People can gather around at a festive environment, take pictures and enjoy each other’s company. We want to make the complex a place where people can really interact with each other and celebrate together.” In addition to the complex’s array of lights and trees, the event will also feature free hot drinks and snacks, an appearance by Ryder Spick’s Christmas truck, carollers, a photo booth and Santa Claus himself.

We know there is a more harmonious way to live with the earth. What we don’t always know is how, which is especially true when it comes to a woman’s menstrual cycle. The average woman menstruates for 38 years, which amounts to 3,500 days flowing and 275 pounds of disposable pads, tampons, applicators and packaging. Historically, women have used anything absorbent from nature, including moss, leaves, sea sponge, wool and strips of cotton cloth. These items had their hygiene challenges and lack of reliability, but all held compostability in common. In the late 1800s, a version of the modern pad came on scene and tampons were not introduced until the 1930s. While these options increased comfort and hygiene, they also became increasingly laden with single-use plastic and synthetic materials. Nowadays, plastic tampon applicators litter beaches and plastic-lined pads are sent to landfills where they remain for centuries. There is, however, a trend of women switching to reusable, eco-friendly options. Every woman should know the following options are available. • A flexible, reusable cup made of either silicone (the Diva or Moon cup) or natural latex (the Keeper) are inserted into the vagina and removed and emptied every six to 12 hours as needed. Washed with soap and water, they can last up to 10 years. • An absorptive cotton pad with leak-

A: No. Parties can agree or a court can order a lump-sum payment where a spouse is entitled to spousal support. The decision will involve an analysis of entitlement to support, the payer’s ability to pay, the assets of the parties and the existing circumstances. However, lump-sum payments are not tax deductible to the person paying support and not income to the person receiving. Periodic payments (such as monthly) are tax deductible to the payor. If you have questions regarding spousal support, please contact our office.
When days are short and damp weather makes it difficult to remember those sunny days by the water, I find comfort in things and places that bring us together. For me, one of those things is familiar stories: Christmas stories, winter settings and anything taking place in New England; bonus points are awarded for nor’easters or sleigh bells. FOR YOUR Winter holidays are about REFERENCE sharing, not always about By Rebecca Burbank giving a wrap-able gift. This year, consider sharing lists of books or authors you love with people in your life. Workshops and programs at the library are another great respite from the drizzle and offer free introductions to a variety of topics. Interested in learning more about a local artist and their experiences? Carver Ivan Rosypskye will speak about Salish artwork on Sunday, December 9. Curious about the 3D printer at the library? Take our introductory course and learn the basics. For us in the library, the holidays would not be complete without an extra silly puppet show adaptation of a familiar favourite. This year the library will present Green Eggs and Ham It Up, a holiday puppet show for kids of all ages. The big show will take place in the library on Saturday, December 23. Happy holidays and happy reading.

Thomas Lloyd Venables
Will be closed from Saturday December 2 to Thursday, December 14 Re-opening Friday, December 15
July 7, 1917 - November 23, 2017
Powell River lost a long-standing member of the community very early on November 23. We sadly announce the sudden passing of Thomas Lloyd Venables. He was known as “Dad” by many who were fortunate enough to know him. Lloyd had just celebrated his 100th birthday this past July with family and friends. He grew up in Boissevain, Manitoba, on a family farm that was self-sustaining for the family and helped them through the depression. Lloyd was called to serve in the army in World War II. He was involved in all the major campaigns in Europe and Africa. After the war ended, he departed for the west to see a brother in Vancouver. While there, he contacted his colonel from the war, who lived in Powell River. Upon finding him, Lloyd gained employment at the mill in 1948, where he worked for 34 years. Lloyd worked hard all his life and provided a wonderful home and property for his family. Many people, for many years, enjoyed the bounty of his labour from his huge garden. The coffeepot was always on for anyone wanting to bend an ear and partake in some freshly baked homemade goodies. They usually were given some to take home with them. Lloyd dedicated 30 years of his time, labour and goods assisting the Salvation Army. He provided community service by faithfully picking up bread donations from the local supermarkets and delivering them around town. He and his wife always helped with the Christmas hampers and donated many crafts to the bazaars. Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Jean, who passed way in 2002. He is survived by his daughter Shelley, son Steven, grandchildren Curtis and Brittany, great-grandchildren Ryder and Brixton, sister Bea Venables, nephews Bruce, David and Buck, niece Jean and their families. Lloyd was a quiet man of honour who never failed to do the right thing and was always full of good cheer, grace, patience and kindness; he was never one to complain. He will be sadly missed and most fondly remembered by all who knew him.The family would like to thank the fourth floor nursing staff at Powell River General Hospital and Stubberfield Funeral Home for their expert advice. No service by request.
