Outdoor gateway adapts to changes Powell River Outdoors taps into tourism market with new services
In the 14 years he has been running his business, Powell River Outdoors (PRO) ow ner Sam Sansalone has witnessed several changes in how consumers purchase goods. Big box stores opening out of town and the increasing prevalence of online shopping has made it more difficult for small businesses to thrive and succeed. “Before, if you needed goods you went to your local shop, now you have hundreds of choices,” says Sansalone, who has spent 30 years in the outdoor sporting goods industry. “Anyone who has a business knows how tough it is.” After opening in 2002, PRO operated below Taws for 12 years before moving to its current location at 4466 Marine Avenue. “We battled against all odds and now we’re here,” says Sansalone. “I want to congratulate all the businesses still open in Powell River; business owners know how difficult it can be.” A strong advocate for local shopping, Sansalone says he does not expect everyone to shop in town 100 per cent of the time, but adds that even a small percentage can make a big difference. In order to adapt to the changing business land-

scape, PRO plans to focus more on services big box and online stores cannot provide. “We’ll tap more into the outdoor tourism market, including fishing charters,” says Sansalone, who, along with his son Nico, recently became a fully licensed fishing guide. “If you can’t get out fishing, call us and we will get you out on the water; it also makes for a great gift.” For anyone with their own boat and fishing gear, but limited experience, PRO has another new ser-
vice that comes with a guarantee of better results. “What we offer is called ‘A-f ish-cionados,’” says Sansalone. “It’s your boat and your gear, but with our pros.” Rather than spending weeks or months trying to figure everything out on their own, clients will have a staff member onboard to make sure they do all the little things right. “Some people buy boats and equipment, go fishing and don’t do very well,” says Sansalone. “They’ll learn more in a couple
hours with us than they would in pretty much in a whole summer on their own.” PRO also offers snowshoe rentals and is looking into small boat and kayak rentals for the new year. “Now, instead of turning customers away, we’re going to offer those services as well,” says Sansalone. In addition to offering products related to outdoor sporting activities, which includes fishing, hunting, camping and backcountry supplies, PRO also acts as an information hub for

visitors and new residents. “Our location acts as a gateway to Powell River: where to go, where not to go, where to fish, where not to fish, and for safety,” he says. “When people walk through the door they receive the best information, whether it’s where to eat or where to spend time before the ferry comes in. If we don’t know the answer, we contact someone who does.” PRO a lso of fers t he C on s er v at ion O ut do or Re c r e at ion E duc at ion (CORE) program and the

firearms course. “If you have any firearmsrelated questions, or firearms you no longer want, we will buy or sell them on consignment,” says Sansalone. Whether a customer is experienced or just starting out, staff has the knowledge to deal with all of their outdoor requirements. “We don’t just sell the products in our store; we use them,” says Sansalone. “If we’re going to stock something, we learn about it first, and we match prices 99 per cent of the time” To thank loyal shoppers, PRO will host a customer appreciation sale on Friday, December 9, and Saturday, December 10, between 9 am-5 pm. A flyer inside this edition of Peak Weekender contains more details and many gift ideas. “We are grateful for everyone who helped get us here,” says Sansalone. “This is a big thank-you to all the people who have supported us over the years.” Regular store hours are 9 am-5 pm, Monday to Saturday. Until Christmas, the store will be open Sundays from 11 am-4pm. “Going forward, we are excited about the future of Powell River, and the PRO shop,” says Sansalone. Sheridan Runions says the party is geared toward the under-14 crowd, but some of her teenage dancers will also be in attendance. “This might be the first opportunity that some of the kids have to do something so ‘grownup,’” she says. Sheridan Runions said the idea came up when her and her staff were brainstorming ways the studio could help families in Powell River and benefit the community.
While the event is free, families are asked to bring a non-perishable food donation, new toys that are unwrapped or cash donations for Powell River Action Centre Food Bank. “At this time of the year everyone is thinking about

Music will be bumping and kids will be dancing at a Holiday Dance Party geared for families to learn more about Sheridan Dance Academy, with all proceeds going to the local food bank. Dance academy owner Mariah Sheridan Runions says she hopes families will drop by with their kids at next Friday evening’s dance party for a great cause. Parents are welcome to stay or leave their kids with volunteers, she says. “It’s a low commitment, easy way for those families who are wondering about Sheridan Dance Academy to come in and check us out and get to know us a little bit,” says Sheridan Runions. A large room in the studio will be transformed into a dance party with music and lights while a second room will have games and crafts for kids who want to
the food bank because the Christmas hampers are going out,” says Sheridan Runions, who remembers her family receiving a Christmas hamper when she was a child. “I still have a teddy bear that sits in my bedroom that I got from a Christmas hamper when I was three.” In addition to raising money for the food bank, the academy has also set up a scholarship fund for low-income families who may not be able to afford dance classes for their children. Sheridan Runions says she is calling on local businesses and individuals who are willing to sponsor a child to dance and the academy will match any dollars donated. “There are a quite a few children in Powell River who might not ever have the chance to dance, so this gives them another chance to do that,” says Sheridan Runions, “and it’s a great way for us to reach out and help.”

PEAK WEEKENDER
Rethinking fashion This is a time of the year when deals abound. But before you consider indulging in a shopping spree, do you know who really pays the price for your bargains? Fashion is the second-most polluting industry in the world. When one considers all that goes into making an article of clothing, the bigger picture begins to emerge. An extravagant amount of resources is used to create most articles of clothing: water and fertilizer-intensive GMO agriculture or polluting synthetic fibres, chemical-laden dyes, volatile working conditions in factories, transportation across oceans and, finally, disposal in a landfill. In the world of fast fashion, we buy things for a steal and wear them for a heartbeat. An online British survey revealed that between the ages of 18 and 80, a woman owns 620 dresses, 434 pairs of shoes, 248 coats and 1,116 tops. But what about thrift stores? They are a great place to purchase low-impact clothing, but donations made to thrift stores do not necessarily make all our consumption justified. Many donated clothes are not sold in shops or made into industrial wiping rags. Most are shipped overseas, with about 70 per cent going to African nations. In Powell River alone, an informal survey revealed that more than 12,000 pounds of donated clothing is exported every month. Sadly, countries receiving our excess often see their local textile industries out-competed and the massive volumes of unsold textiles also end up as their problem rather than our
LET’S TALK TRASH responsibility. Does all this amount to us wearing potato sacks? Fortunately, there are many ways to look great without the waste: • Host a clothing swap • Shop secondhand • Borrow from a friend • Add accessories to upgrade an outfit • Rent formal wear • Learn to fix broken zippers, loose buttons and small tears • Upcycle ripped clothing into something else Still tempted to buy new? Aim for natural fibres and dyes, upcycled textiles and locally made fashion. Q. I have not settled my claim with ICBC and need to go to court. Which level of court do I file my claim in?
Concert, at 7:30 pm on Thursday, December 15, at James Hall. Tickets are $20 each. For information, call 604.485.9633 or go to powellriveracademy.org.
A. If your claim is for $25,000 or less, you can file in Provincial Small Claims court. Otherwise, you should file your action in BC Supreme Court. There are pros and cons to both levels of court, but one of the most important considerations is how “costs” are dealt with by those courts. Costs are a claim for additional funds that could be paid by the other side toward your legal fees and/or money you have to spend to get to court. It is something that should be looked at closely before you file. If you have been injured in a motor vehicle collision and need to commence a court action, please make an appointment with our office.

Regulating counselling At this very moment, someone is considering getting help from a counsellor or therapist. It is often difficult to make the decision to seek out therapy, to take that step. Fortunately, most will find someone who can help guide them in ways that help, but how can a person know the relationship will be successful? Choosing a counsellor can be a challenge, especially where there is an open market on the services, such as in BC. By that we mean regulation is nearly non-ex istent. Mu lt iple professional organizations register counsellors and therapists, but there is no overriding provincial licensing body. That means anyone can call themselves a therapist, counsellor, or spiritual healer. They can then charge fees for their services and advertise their availability. Despite a lack of regulation, many, perhaps most, of these people provide a good and valuable service. But they are not the ones to be concerned about.
HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet FACTBC (factbc.org), an umbrella group that pulls together 12 organizations that register therapists and counsellors, including, for example, BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, Association of Registered Clinical Hypnotherapists and the Music Therapy Association of BC. While members of FACTBC perform an important function by registering its counsellors and therapists, it does not have specific, legislated authority to act in cases of misbehaviour. While FACTBC and its members do have rigor-
ous criteria for registering with its organizations, it is not mandatory. There is a complaint resolution process, but again, it is not mandatory. This brings up one of the challenges of a lack of statutory regulation: joining is voluntary, as is resigning. This is what some individuals will do rather than face complaint resolution. BC has 26 regulated health professions, 25 of which come under a regulatory “college” listed in the Health Professions Act. Among them are dental technology, chiropractic, midwifery, physical therapy, massage therapy and pharmacy. Counselling therapy is not covered. A portion of FACTBC’s mission is to pursue the regulation and development of the College of Counselling Therapists. Using the professional college model would integrate these professions under the Public Health Act and provide an appropriate licensing and review body. That means anyone wanting to prac-
tice in the field would have to prove core competency and adhere to professional ethical standards. Presently, only three provinces regulate counselling in this way: Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. With such statutory regulation would come the ability to transfer to or from these provinces with credentials
intact or with minimal additional criteria. While FACTBC and its members do have dispute resolution processes, they cannot replace those of a college. Implementing regulation of the profession would build public trust and provide an assurance of accountability. It would enable the profession to
censure members or mandate and implement corrections. Doing this would mean clients or patients could have more confidence in the system, and in their chosen counsellor. Paul Martiquet is the Medical Health Officer for the Sunshine Coast and Powell River.

1953 - 2016
Born May 8, 1953, in Marathon, Ontario, David passed away Wednesday, November 30, after a brief battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his longtime girlfriend Carol, father Charles, mother Florence and sister Bonnie. David is survived by his sister Dale, brotherin-law Dave Rourke and brothers Paul (Elaine) and Roger (Jeanne). There will be a celebration of life at the Jean Pike Centre, 7055 Alberni Street, on Saturday, December 10, from 2-5 pm.
Robert Edward Parsons It is with great sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our brother Robert on November 19. He was a lifelong resident of Powell River, born July 6, 1961, to Robert and Lorraine Parsons. Rob was an avid soccer player as a youth and hockey player as a teen. He studied and worked within the silviculture and forestry profession throughout his life. He was an experienced surveyor, woodsman and prospector who enjoyed the challenge of a rocky slope more than pavement under his feet. Rob was predeceased by his parents and older sister Brenda. He leaves behind his sisters Sandra and Donna, as well as a large local extended family and lifelong friends and acquaintances. To the outside world we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time. No service arrangements have been made. All who knew and loved Rob are asked to think of his spirit at peace whenever the soft rains fall on our coastal mountains and forests.

Santa Claus Parade
The weather outside was not frightful, but rather ideal, for the annual Santa Claus Parade sponsored by Marine Avenue Business Association and Powell River Lions Club. The rain stopped in time. Families, children and the young at heart, who were encouraged to bring items for Powell River Action Centre Food Bank, lined Marine Avenue for a perfect little parade that featured floats from Powell River businesses and organizations and, of course, Santa coming to town.
