$50,000 up for grabs
Dream Lottery ticket purchases help Powell River Kings hockey team With more than $100,000 in cash and prizes available, the main draw date for Powell River Kings Dream Lottery is quickly approaching. The fifth annual edition of the lottery, and the 50/50 raffle that accompanies it, is the main fundraiser for Powell River Kings hockey club. Dream Lottery tickets are available for $100 each, while 50/50 tickets, which must be purchased in conjunction with a lottery ticket, are $20 each. “This is an incredible raffle that offers great prizes and great odds of winning,” says lottery organizer Joe Mastrodonato. “Only 2,499 tickets are printed for the Dream Lottery; 4,000 for the 50/50 draw.” As prizes are drawn on January 7, 2017, each winning ticket is placed back inside the draw barrel until the grand prize is announced, “so you have multiple chances to win,” says Mastrodonato. Early-bird winners are also re-entered into the main draw. Currently, the 50/50 total is more than $26,000; the winner receives half. Mastrodonato says the lottery has been well supported over the past four years, but adds that ticket sales in 2016 have not been as strong. “For w hatever reason, this year ticket sales

are much lower,” says Mastrodonato. “We are doing everything possible to promote the raffle and have many volunteers spending hundreds of hours at the ticket booth inside Town Centre Mall.” In addition to the mall booth, which is open 10 am-4 pm daily, tickets are also available at Capone’s Cellar from 9 am-11 pm daily and at all Kings home games. For added convenience, a buy-online raffle system, with real-time approval, is set up at prkingsdreamlot-
tery.ca. A complete list of prizes is also available on the website. “The online system issues draw numbers to the buyer and produces counterfoils for the draw barrel,” explains Mastrodonato. “The system has been approved by BC Gaming and is working very well; and it’s secure.” Ticket buyers from cities and towns around the province have been using the online system. “We appreciate their support,” says Mastrodonato. “To date, we have sold
about 45 per cent of the tickets, from in and out of town.” A c c o r d i n g t o Mastrodonato, funds received from the lottery and 50/50 draw have had a tremendous impact on the team’s budget and provide one of its main revenue streams. “It is very important that we sell all of the tickets as costs of operating the team keep rising,” explains Mastrodonato. “This year alone we’ve had a substantial increase in ordinary expenses and have already

encountered extraordinary expenses, such as bus repairs, a new video camera and higher travel costs.” Building up a rainy day fund is important, says Mastrodonato, as sooner or later the team will need a new bus. “We don’t have people with deep pockets to pick any shortfalls of team expenses,” says Mastrodonato. “Ticket purchases make a big difference as the net proceeds have the potential to account for 30 per cent of the team’s budget.”

As a non-profit, community-owned organization, all lottery proceeds stay within Powell River and go a long way to keeping the team going year after year. “We challenge everyone in Powell River to help support the Kings organization,” says Mastrodonato, adding that social and economic benefits of the team’s presence in the city have been well documented. “When you buy a Dream Lottery ticket, you can help yourself and the Kings.” Including 50/50 winners, more than half a million dollars in cash and prizes have been given away since the lottery’s inception in 2012. Meanwhile, Kings have made changes to their game-day ticket prices, enabling more families to attend home games. A mom and dad paying $30 to enter can have their kids admitted free of charge. Standard admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and $5 for children 12 and under. “The lottery funds help us keep prices affordable,” explains Mastrodonato. “We look forward to the support from the community.” Powell River Kings Dream Lottery’s main draw takes place on Saturday, January 7, during the second intermission at a home game versus Coquitlam Express.

Sounds of Christmas carollers will emanate from Patricia Theatre this Sunday afternoon during the 11th annual Community Christmas Carol Sing-along. Organizers of the yearly event plan it on the Sunday closest to Christmas and after church services so it does not conflict with anything else, says co-founder and theatre co-owner Ann Nelson. “We want the event to be a multigenerational opportunity for people who maybe don’t have family in town to share holiday traditions with,” says Nelson. “We started this 11 years ago because we missed the family carolling we grew up with and we wanted to create that experience for other people.” Nelson and co-founder Roberta Pearson, who leads the sing-alongs with a strong voice that Nelson says is “operatic quality,” are joined by organist Jim Dickson, who will be playing this year on the theatre’s new organ: an Eminent Grand from Holland, by way of Delta. Carolling sheets are handed out to attendees and Pearson leads everyone in song inside the acoustic-friendly Patricia. “It sounds so warm; it’s just lovely,” says Nelson. “And any of us who are hesitant about hitting a certain note, we just hide behind Roberta’s voice. It’s wonderful.”

Community Christmas Carol Sing-along co-founder Roberta Pearson, along with Santa Claus himself, leads attendees in song at the annual carolling event.
Carollers in the audience call out requests from the song sheets and Nelson says someone always suggests “O Holy Night.” “So we all just let Roberta solo,” she laughs. Besides the merry carolling, the event also features an appearance from Santa Claus himself, as well as door prizes. Admission is by donation with all proceeds raised going to the Friends of the Historic Patricia Theatre restoration fund. Nelsons says the community event appeals to all ages and Inclusion Powell River workers often choose to give up some of their free time to bring their clients to join in the sing-alongs. One person is key to the event being a success every year, says Nelson, and
that’s Pearson. “We couldn’t do it without Roberta,” she says. “Nobody has the courage without her to start belting out songs. You’ve got to have someone who empowers you, and that’s what makes this holiday event so much fun.”

THE LAW CORNER Q. My brother has appointed my minor son to be the executor of his will. If my brother dies while my son is still a minor, can my son act as the executor? A. Section 134 of the Wills, Estates and Succession Act says that when a minor is named as the executor, the court must grant administration with the will annexed to the guardian of the minor child, or, if the guardian does not apply, to another person who court considers appropriate until the minor reaches 19 years of age. When the minor reaches 19, the court may revoke the grant to the guardian or other person and grant probate of the will to the former minor. Help for your heartburn We all know the burning sensation in the chest is not really “heart”-burn, but it does not make it any more pleasant, does it? Heartburn is the backup of acid from the stomach into the esophagus. Most of us have had it at least once, especially after eating too much; think about that over the coming holiday season. Let’s look first at how heartburn happens. At the bottom of the esophagus, where it meets the stomach, is a circular sphincter muscle. If it weakens or faces pressure, it can allow the escape of acidic digestive juices from the stomach into the lower esophagus. Pressure on the stomach, such as when it’s too full or when someone is lying down, can pressure the sphincter and cause the leakage. That is heartburn. Mere heartburn is pretty simple and goes away, often on its own. But if it is not going away or occurs too often, it could be more serious. Heartburn may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD),
HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet and if you have at least two incidents of heartburn a week, it may be time to seek medical advice. Heartburn is unpleasant, but GERD is more serious. Among its effects are interrupted sleep and subsequent tiredness, hoarseness, laryngitis, chronic cough, painful swallowing and more. And it may damage the esophagus. You could have GERD without the acid reflux. This is called non-erosive reflux disease (yes, NERD). What can you do? If it is simple, occasional heartburn, try an antacid such
as calcium carbonate or one of the other treatments like aluminum or magnesium compounds. Sodium bicarbonate is the active ingredient in fizzy antacids but these are not recommended because they contain too much sodium; they may also contain aspirin, itself a contributor to heartburn. Looking more broadly at the problem, there are steps to take that can reduce the occurrence of heartburn. Quitting smoking should help, as can losing weight, if you are overweight. A large study of female nurses in 2006 found that for women in the “normal” weight range, an increase of just 10 pounds in weight led to an increased risk for GERD of 40 per cent. When the women lost weight, symptoms decreased. It’s a good idea to avoid eating two to three hours before bedtime, as is eating smaller meals to reduce the pressure in your stomach. Stay away from foods and drinks you think cause symptoms. These may include spicy, fatty or fried
foods, alcohol, milk, peppermint, chocolate, coffee and tea. At night, elevate the head of your bed and let gravity reduce the pressure on the esophageal sphincter muscle. You might also chew sugarless gum after meals to stimulate the production of saliva, which then helps neutralize stomach acid. On the medicinal side, the first step is usually an antacid, but if they do not
do the job, you can turn to H2 blockers. These reduce the production of stomach acid by blocking histamines, which stimulate stomach acid. The next step could be proton-pump inhibitors. These actually turn off almost all production of stomach acid. In either case, do not take the medication for more than 14 days. If the problem persists, it is definitely time to see your doctor.
The best advice we can give is to suggest paying special attention if you have persistent heartburn or unexplained symptoms such as poor sleep, difficulty swallowing, chronic cough or hoarseness. If you do, seek medical advice as you may have GERD, or NERD. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for Sunshine Coast and Powell River.

Brian Stewart “A Life Well Lived”
December 28, 1938 - December 9, 2016
Brian was the first born to parents Alan and Dora (née Thomas) and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, England. The family’s only mode of transportation was a motorcycle and sidecar. In 1956, Brian was 17 and responsible for their transatlantic relocation and safeguarding his mother and three younger sisters. Their father, already in Canada, had made preparations for their new life. Brian found a job the very next day and worked to help support his family. In Hamilton, his first brother arrived before they all moved west to Fort Saskatchewan, where his second brother was born. Now in Edmonton, Brian began a career in autobody and paint. While an apprentice, he met the love of his life; they married and had their first child. They welcomed their second child in Fort Saskatchewan before finally settling in Powell River in 1967 to have their third child, where they would remain for the rest of his life. Brian enjoyed professional success at Highland Auto Rebuilders, MacMillan Bloedel and Stewart’s Painting and Decorating. In 1971, Brian purchased an acre of land south of town and started a hobby farm with his prairie-born wife and young family. In his kids, Brian instilled core family values through labour and daily chores. We raised pigs and free-range birds and ate fresh eggs and organic vegetables. We also enjoyed camping, boating and road trips back to Saskatchewan In 1987, after the kids had left, Brian and Annette made a new home in Townsite and had wonderful neighbours. Brian was a member of Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department, an auxiliary police officer and a paramedic with the ambulance service. As a team member of public speakers with the Moose Lodge, he travelled extensively throughout North America. Brian organized and supported many charities and devoted much of his time to help the needy and less fortunate in this community. He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran, where he remained steadfast. Not only did Brian swim competitively in the 1960s, he also coached and mentored swimmers, building confidence and selfesteem in many young men. His interests included scuba diving, golfing, curling and karate. He enjoyed intarsia, the collector-car hobby and riding his new Harley, a passion he rekindled at age 76, knocking one more item off his bucket list. Brian was predeceased by his parents and his daughter Terrie Lee. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Annette (née Bautz), sons Anthony (Lori) and Vincent (Julie), grandchildren Maxwell, Alyse and Jordan Kramchynski, sisters Barb (Don), Ann (Les) and Linda (Bruce), brothers Robert (Heidi) and Michael (Tonia) and generations of cousins, in-laws, nephews, nieces and a lifetime of new and old friends. The family is forever grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, love and kindness, compassion and understanding over the years and, especially now in this our most difficult time. Overcome by cancer, Brian’s body finally succumbed to this disease but his will and his spirit remained strong and intact. We are forever indebted to Doctor Skobkareva for supporting Dad’s wish to remain in his home while under her care. We sincerely thank the home care nurses, Sheena and the palliative nurses and the pilots of Angel Flight for their care and professionalism. Friends Pat and Joanne have been entrusted to carry out Brian’s final wish. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to Faith Lutheran, Powell River General Hospital Foundation (palliative care) or Angel Flight. The family will host a more fitting celebration of life in the spring: the season Brian enjoyed for short-sleeved shirts, shiny cars and motorcycles.

October 3, 1937 – December 8, 2016 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Hill in Powell River, BC. Mike was predeceased by his parents Jack and Dorothy and his brother Wayne. He is survived by his wife Lee, daughters Lisa (Ron) Racine and Tricia (Bob) Alexandruk, stepchildren Jen (Rob) Crawford and Rory (Nicky) Guenard, grandchildren Kendra and Alyssa and step-grandchildren Britt, Talia and Colin. Mike was born and raised in Powell River, where he resided for all but the few years he spent in the United States Navy. Mike’s working years were spent on the MacMillan Bloedel wharf, where he worked as a longshoreman. Mike loved the outdoors and especially loved the years of retirement that he was able to spend working with the BOMB Squad building trails and bridges around Powell River. He was an avid golfer and loved to play baseball. He was a Mason and had been involved in the local Masonic Lodge for the past 43 years. When he was not outdoors, Mike enjoyed playing cards and watching his Boston sports teams. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye and they enjoyed countless ice creams, card games, diving for loonies and many other surprises he would come up with. He would often make long drives to arenas, gyms, soccer or ball fields to watch them play ringette, hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball or volleyball; he enjoyed them all. Mike will be missed by many and has left many reminders that will always bring a smile to our faces. A celebration will be held with the date forthcoming. Condolences may be offered at stubberfieldfh.com. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon or a charity of your choice.

RASPBERRIES A beautiful bouquet of red Roses to the young lady who helped a great-great-grandpa pick up his debit card at the pharmacy. I could have bent down, but would never have been able to get back up. Three dozen long-stemmed red Roses to the cheerful post office employee who helped me send a pair of knitting needles, three balls of yarn and a hat to my friends who visited from Victoria and forgot their things. Stinky raspberries to the dog owners who either intentionally or unintentionally discard their dog-poop bags along the Sea Wall trail instead of disposing them in the designated garbage bins. Raspberries to anyone bringing drugs into this community. People are dying and no one is doing anything about it. Very heavy raspberries to the person(s) who pushed a Safeway cart down over the steep edge off of Marine Avenue near the Sea Wall. A bundle of multicoloured roses to all of our friends who stepped up in our time of great need. Thanks for the visits, calls, cards, treats and meals to help us get through and heal on the road to recovery. Raspberries to the local company that refuses to answer our requests for service. Just because it’s a relatively small job doesn’t mean we should be ignored.
Red and green burnt out Raspberries to city hall for not putting up Christmas lights on Marine Avenue this year. Bah Raspberry humbug! Rotten raspberries to the person(s) who stole everything out of my brother’s trailer after he died. Loads of roses to all the people who bought toques and mitts from Fighting Cancer at a recent craft fair. One stitch at a time, we raised $114 for the BC Children’s Hospital. Roses to the postal workers. I had a Christmas card delivered to me and it was addressed to Oak Street. I live on Ontario Avenue. Roses: I simply do not know where else to write this. I lost my beloved spouse of more than two decades within 14 days of diagnosis while we were vacationing in Europe. Due to grief and complicating medical factors, I am stuck in the Lower Mainland, wanting to go home to Powell River as soon as possible. I have been surprised and touched by condolences cards I have received from Powell River. A local business, whose services I have used over the years, had the kindness to go through the trouble of sending me flowers. This is the Powell River spirit. I am very grateful. Thank you very much.

Carols by Candlelight Dwight Hall was sold out for three performances of Powell River Academy of Music’s annual holiday tradition, Carols by Candlelight. All of the academy’s choirs performed, filling the great hall with the joyous sounds of the season. Filling tables with seasonal treats, cookies and sweets has also become a tradition for many who attend. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS
