HVAC company expands services Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning adds staff to meet consumer demand Approaching the one-year mark in business, Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning owners Peter Bordignon and Gary Slootweg agree that support from Powell River residents has far exceeded expectations since the company’s official opening on January 3, 2017. “We want to thank all of our customers for a great first year,” says Peter. “We look forward to continuing to build our business and earning the trust of all Powell River residents.” Success has led to expansion and the addition of new members to the team of technicians and office staff, which already includes Gary, a ticketed gas fitter, and Peter, a journeyman HVAC and refrigeration technician and gas fitter. “We now have Dan Holmes, a TECA-certified and ticketed sheet-metal technician,” says Gary. “With over 35 years of experience, Dan brings a varied background of technical expertise to the business. He designs and builds all of our duct work in-house, and he’s also a certified gas fitter” Peter and Gary, who share 36 years of combined experience, ensure a ticketed technician is always on hand for all installations to provide the most professional and reliable service for customers. “We’re all qualified for the work we are doing; pulling permits is a must, especially for gas work, a ticket is required,” says Peter. “If you’re not sure, ask to see the contractor’s

certifications.” The company also supports training opportunities for employees. Gas fitting and refrigeration apprentice Hank Upton recently joined as its newest member after working in the field for more than three years. “We’re sending Hank to school in January,” says Peter. “He’s a huge addition to our team; getting him his ticket is our top priority.” With almost two years in the industry, receptionist Erin MacLean fit in seamlessly, and offers more than just front-office experience. “On top of office work, she actually gets out there on the job site,” says Gary. “She has the gift of a tradesperson, which makes her invaluable, and multitalented.” Bookkeeper Megan Thistle K THIN me ser to hoSONAL Caring clo G PER ES VIC OFFERIN T SER SUPPOR

The joy of minimalism It is almost sacrilege to bring up purging belongings at this time of the year, when so many of us are accumulating them. Almost. However, there appears to be a growing trend across the globe to embrace simplification. Popularized by organizing consultant and author Marie Kondo, many are embracing the idea of releasing items in our lives that no longer “spark joy.” Others following the path of minimalism tout the virtues of owning only one of anything. Could the peace and joy on holiday greeting cards be found, in part, by simplifying? Many of us know the thrill of opening a gift or enjoy ing something we just gifted ourselves, but a growing number of us are seeing excessive accumulation as a burden. Ever y t h i ng t hat comes into our lives occupies menta l a nd physica l space. The more things we have, the more we need to maintain, repair, store and possibly even insure. People who simplify do not view stuff as inherently bad. Instead, they claim they are freeing themselves to enjoy what they already have even more. Simplif y ing is about more than decluttering. Minimalists report enjoying more mental clarity because many distractions are removed from their minds and visual field. Saving money is often a

selves from the irony of paying for long-term storage of items we rarely use or even remember owning. Curious about downsizing a little over the holidays? Expert minimalists
suggest placing a box in every room of the house, and then placing rarely used objects from that room in the box. Wait six months or so and whatever you have not yet used in the box, donate or give it away. Consider gifting experiences rather than possessions to loved ones over the holidays. You will be gifting them much more than just a memory; you could be freeing them from some of the chains that bind.

HEAD INJURY: While hunting at dusk, this male barred owl flew into a scooter travelling along Westview Avenue. After Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS) was contacted, the driver and a neighbour stayed beside the young owl and directed traffic around the bird, which remained standing on the road after the crash. Treating any concussed creature immediately is very important. Although it can take 12 hours for the impacted head to swell, if the concussed bird is immediately put into a dark-covered container and kept in a quiet environment while being observed and assessed, and possibly given pain medication, it can mean the difference between life and death. Unfortunately, owls frequently come into contact with vehicles while in oblivious pursuit of prey crossing the road. Fortunately, this young owl did not sustain serious lasting injuries and was released after two days. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

THE LAW CORNER Q. What is the quickest and cheapest way to properly address parenting, property and support issues after separation? A. A “separation agreement” is often the most efficient way to settle issues after separation. By comparison, it is typically much more time-consuming, expensive and stressful to settle issues in court. Before making a separation agreement, parties should fully disclose their financial circumstances and closely consider the best interests of their children (if any). Parties should also get independent legal advice on the separation agreement, especially regarding the fair range of outcomes for child and spousal support and the division of family property. If you have questions about separation or separation agreements, please contact our office.

1105 Obituaries
August 21, 1957 - December 22, 2002
MORRIS, Charles E. June 4, 1933 - December 6, 2017 Born and raised in Ocean Falls, Charlie passed away quietly on December 6, 2017. Charlie is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Lee, his son John (Charmaine), and his daughters Brenda (Ken), Sandra (John), Cathy (Doug) and Charlene (Darren). He loved to have his family around him, especially his 8 grandchildren, Tyrone, Jolene (Elmer), Hayley (Brandon), Brent (Karen), Shyla (Grant), Kaylene, Shawnee and Kyle and his 4 great grandkids Jackson, Hudson, Jasper and Emmersyn. Charlie came to Powell River in 1954 to work in the electrical dept of the mill and joined the Westview Volunteer Fire Dept. He became a professional firefighter in 1959 and retired after 30 years in 1989 as fire chief. Charlie had many friends from all walks of life; his firefighting and municipal friends, the breakfast gang and most recently, his Happy Hour friends. Charlie loved to take his family on summer vacations exploring BC, Canada and the US. He enjoyed camping with friends and family and a good sing song. A man of many talents and a vast knowledge of everything. The family would like thank our neighbours and many friends for their support over the years as well as emergency responders, hospital staff, Dr Rossouw and Kim and PR Fire Rescue for their Facebook tribute and flying flags at half-mast.
We remember you each day and that brings warmth and joy to our hearts. We remember the happy times we shared together. We remember the ways we showed our love for one another. Fifteen years have quickly passed though still we can’t forget. For in the hearts that loved him his memory lingers yet. Love always and forever, Wendy, Melissa, Stephanie
