Annual event honours business excellence Nomination period open for Powell River Chamber of Commerce Business Awards

For shoppers, clients and customers who wish to highlight extraordinary service or bring attention to local businesses or organizations for going above and beyond in the past year, the time has come to express those sentiments. Nomination forms for Powell River Chamber of Commerce Business Awards are now available for residents to fill out and submit. “A lot of people in the community go into stores all year long and receive great customer service,” says Powell River Chamber of Commerce manager Kim Miller. “Now is the time for them to recognize and nominate their favourite businesses.” Anyone can nominate a business, and that business does not have to be a member of the chamber. “We have more than 300 hundred business members in the chamber, but there are more than 1,000 businesses in this community,” says Miller. “It’s important for people to realize that every single one of those businesses can be nominated for one of these awards.” Miller says the nomination process often leads to the chamber finding out about businesses not previously on its radar. “We try to be as much in the know about businesses in the community as we can be,” she says, “but ev-

ery year we have one or two nominated that we have never heard of before, so we try to seek them out and find out where and who they are.” Residents have several easily accessible ways to nominate a business. Entry forms are available in the November, December and January issues of Powell River Living and online at powellriverchamber.com. “There is a nomination form on our website, under the Business Awards drop-

down menu,” says Miller. “People are also welcome to drop by the chamber at 6807 Wharf Street to pick one up.” A nomination form will also be included in the Wednesday, January 11, issue of the Powell River Peak. The nomination period for the 22nd annual event is open until January 20. Businesses will be recognized in 15 categories, each with its own detailed criteria, including two new

awards: aboriginal business of the year and the forestry sector award. “We have an aboriginal community we are working so closely with, and trying to be inclusive the chamber board felt there should be an award for aboriginal business,” says Miller. “Tla’amin businesses can be nominated in other categories, too.” A c c o r d i n g t o M i l l e r, severa l forest r y sector nominations have already been submitted for

the new category. “This whole community evolved from the forestry industry, so we’re hoping it will be well-received,” she says. To determine a winner in each category, a panel of seven judges, all business leaders in the community, reads over all the nominations and makes a final decision. “It is a huge process for the judges; they have to go through every single one,” e x pl a i n s M i l ler.

“It’s not at all easy.” Judges only see that a business is nominated, not how many nominations it receives. “If 20 nominations come in for one business, it doesn’t mean they automatically win,” says Miller. Judges are given the award title, criteria and names of all businesses nominated in each category and select winners and runners-up. The process usually encompasses an entire day. “We’re more than willing to share the process with anyone who asks,” says Miller. “Transparency of these awards is very important to us.” While honouring local business excellence, the annual Chamber of Com merce event a lso serves as a major fundraising event for the organization. “The event, including live and silent auctions, is critical to our financial viability,” says Miller. The awards presentation and dinner banquet, catered by The Convenient Chef, takes place Saturday, February 4, at Dwight Hall. Organizers have arranged for a large bus to take celebratory attendees home safely afterward. For more information, call 604.485.4051, or email office@powellriver chamber.com.

New year swimmers brave waters Roller derby league organizes annual polar bear swim

Find out how our self-employment program works, plan to attend our next introduction to business

This is a full-day session on Wednesday, January 11 • 9:30 am-4 pm For information and to reserve your seat, call 604.485.7901 POWELL RIVER COMMUNITY FUTURES

THE LAW CORNER Q: Someone broke into my home on December 25 and left me presents? Is this legal? Can I sue? A group of participants in last year’s polar bear swim plunge into the cold ocean at Willingdon Beach.

won’t be swimming,” she says. “It always looks like they are having a lot of fun though, and it’s a great way for everyone to get together and start the new year. For those who haven’t jumped in the ocean on January 1, you might want to try it.” When Hopkins asked the roller derby league to take over the event last year, Lister says the group was happy to organize the free community event and provide hot chocolate and coffee. The only fundraising that will be done, says Lister, is through roller derby t-

shirt sales, with proceeds going to the Community Resource Centre. “It all started because a lot of our team members were going to the swim anyway, and were big supporters of the event,” says Lister. “It’s a tradition and we didn’t want to see it stop. It brings the community together and, for a lot of people, it’s a right of passage; jump in the water and start fresh. We wanted to make sure it continued since Bill [Hopkins] helped us out a lot with our roller derby league, and we wanted to give back what was given to us.”

As for the lingering possibility that Lister might actually join in the traditional swim in our frigid January ocean this year, well, it’s just not going to happen. “Nope,” she says, “not a chance.”

A: While technically this is criminally a break and enter and in civil court actionable in trespass, it may be hard to establish any “damages” (meaning the amount of loss you suffered that you are asking to be compensated for). Also if you report this to the police or file a civil action, you may end up on the “Naughty List” next year, so I would advise against it.

NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY

841210

Some consider it an essential holiday tradition while others consider it completely out of the question, but either way, the annual polar bear swim is always a sight to behold. The chilly event is being organized by Pow! Town Roller Derby for the second year running after longtime organizer Bill Hopkins handed over the reigns last year. After sorting out the particulars with City of Powell River’s recreation department, Pow! Town president Nicki Lister says the event will go ahead with hundreds of brave souls plunging into the cold waters at Willingdon Beach at noon on Sunday, January 1. Lister, however, will be one of the people who stand on the sidelines and watch, saying there is nothing anyone can do to convince her to go in. “It’s been too cold! Resolve to quit plastics

Effective January 1, 2017, the Powell River Regional District is changing the way we are taking reservations for the use of park facilities at Craig Park and Palm Beach Park. Reservations will no longer be made through our Community Services Department for Craig Park or through our Palm Beach Park Caretaker. If you wish to reserve either of these parks, please call the Regional District office directly at 604.485.2260 or email us at administration@powellriverrd.bc.ca. The process for reserving group camp sites at Shelter Point Park and Haywire Bay Park is not changing. Park Caretakers are still taking these reservations directly at 604.486.7228 or shelterpointpark@powellriverrd.bc.ca for Shelter Point Park or 604.483.1097 or haywirebaypark@powellriverrd.bc.ca for Haywire Bay Park. We do not accept reservations at our campgrounds for single campsites.

LET’S TALK TRASH Next on the list can be to give up relying on plastic shopping bags. Stock a few cloth bags in your car and at the front door, along with a reminder note in both places that asks, “Got bags?” Woven baskets are a great alternative as well, because they can hold so many of your bulk or heavy items. Once you start, you may find plastic reduction is your newest hobby. A quick search online will reveal great tips and tricks to support your journey. Becoming a mindful resident of the planet feels good and is a revolution worth making.

COMMUNITY CALENDAR SUNDAY

868V10

It is that time of the year, when motivation to change old habits and start fresh begins to percolate. This year, you may find your willpower strengthened by choosing to make a green revolution rather than a New Year’s resolution. Our suggestion for 2017: quit using single-use plastics. Take a quick scan of your kitchen, car, recycling box or trash can and you are likely to find evidence of having indulged in some single-use plastics. These find their way into even the greenest of homes in the form of snack-food packaging, compostable coffee to-go lids, stir sticks, fruit-produce stickers, straws, handy to-go utensils and convenient shopping bags. Though we may try to release our guilt by tossing these items into the recycling bin, many are not recyclable through our local system. And let’s be honest, an overflowing recycling bin is nothing to boast about. Mining, transporting and processing plastic is energy intensive and drains a precious global resource frivolously. If the thought of going cold turkey overwhelms you, try integrating one new plastic-free habit per month for you or your household. An easy place to start is with beverages. Canadians dispose of approximately 1.6 billion coffee cups and 65 million water bottles each year. Start your new year off with a thrift store hunt for a to-go cup and water bottle, or invest in a plastic-free version of both.

A hardworking man with a great and enduring love of his family, Fraser was always happy to head off on his boat and enjoy the company of his many friends while exploring the coast he so loved. Joan Ford Passed away on December 11, 2016 at the age of 90. Joan is survived by her three children, Rick (Mary), Anne and Lesley, her six grandchildren Kevin (Kelly), Stephanie, Aaron, Brianne, Kelsey (Joel) and Connor, and also three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Barry, in 2011. Joan was born in Newcastle, England, where she became a registered nurse, emigrating to Canada in 1951. She met her husband in Powell River where they married and raised their three children before moving to Richmond and retiring to Abbotsford, BC. Joan loved her family above all else and was happiest when they were with her. She was devoted to her husband of 58 years and had many fond memories of their travels together. She will now be with him for eternity; rest in peace.

Robert John “Bob” Rourke August 12, 1928 - December 27, 2016 Bob passed away (or as he would have put it, “My string ran out”) at Evergreen Care Unit. His loving wife, Anne, passed away 11 years ago, almost to the day. Bob is survived by his children D a v i d ( D o r o t hy ) , Wa y n e (Zoe) and Alan (Grace), his grandchildren Leah, Cam (Daniela), James and Graydon and his great-grandson Jeremy Donofrio. Born and raised in Victoria to Harold and Muriel (Brethour) Rourke, Bob was a lifelong resident of Powell River. After graduating from Vic High in 1946, he joined the BC Forest Service. He met his wife, Anne Carwithen, when she was boarding at his folks place in Victoria. After serving with the forest service, Bob had the opportunity to join the Powell River Company in 1954 as a log scaler; in 1959, the company became MacMillan Bloedel. Bob took pride in his role in log supply and enjoyed the friends he made during his time at the mill. Bob and Anne always had a desire to pay back the community and were active volunteers in Westview Volunteer Fire Department, Scouts, Big Brothers, Myrtle Point Golf Club and Meals on Wheels. Bob’s family and friends will miss his humour and positive attitude. A celebration of life will take place at 1 pm on Sunday, January 8, at Carlson Community Club, 4463 Joyce Avenue.
