Precious metals roadshow travels north Ursa Major Gold, Silver and Coin offers knowledge and no-obligation assessments Although Ursa Major Gold, Silver and Coin president Barry Dick has been to Powell River on several occasions, this weekend marks the first time his precious metals roadshow visits the northern Sunshine Coast. Two buyers, including Dick, will be on hand to analyze and purchase gold, silver, coins, paper money, sterling silver and flatware, gold nuggets and jewellery from sellers on a first-come, first-served basis. Cash is paid to complete all transactions. “We’ve been coming to Sechelt for about 10 years, but have never taken that second boat,” says Dick. “This is a neat first-time opportunity.” Now semi-retired, Dick became involved with precious metals after seeing a television advertisement many years ago that encouraged people to mail in their gold and wait for a cheque to be mailed back. “I thought, ‘Good gracious, who would do that?’” says Dick. “Who would let their items out of their sight?” Dick says he also noticed buyers at other roadshows taking items brought in by potential sellers to a separate room to do an assessment, then coming back to inform them of the value. “It was so wrong and potentially dishonest. We ensure people’s items never leave their sight while they are with us,” explains Dick. “We assess everything right in front of them, whether it’s coins, a diamond or paper money.” Dick started in the business part-time at age 16 before it evenOFF 15% D UTS AN STR KS SHOC
tually evolved into a full-time career. Despite working in the field for nearly 40 years, he has always considered it mostly a hobby. “I became serious about travelling and buying about 15 years ago,” says Dick. “I’ve always been a hobbyist gold panner, and coins are something that have followed me around since I was a little boy.” Dick says some of his earliest memories are of asking his father for loose change when he arrived | EFFICIENT | DEPENDABLE POWERFUL

weekend sessions sit down, have a conversation about their items and find out the value. “If people choose to sell what they bring in after hearing the quote, great, but it is also about information,” says Dick. “A lot of times they just need to know a ballpark of what things are worth; we don’t pressure anyone into selling.” Dick says from a precious metals point of view, the amount of recycling that takes place now is

home from shopping so he could search for a coin he needed for his collection. As a buyer, Dick shares his knowledge and experience to make sellers feel comfortable and to help remove any trepidation they may have with the process. “A lot of times people don’t know what they have,” he says. “Taking the show on the road gives them an opportunity to find out if they own something valuable.” Sellers who come to the free
incredible. “Ever y year manufacturers need a certain amount of gold to make computer processors or cell phones,” says Dick. “All new vehicles have gold in their computers as well, and new jewellery is always being manufactured.” According to Dick, almost half of current manufacturing needs for gold are being met through recycling broken or out-of-fashion jewellery. “Here is a chance to recycle it, and that makes a huge difference to the economy and the environment,” says Dick. “To mine an ounce of gold right now costs about $500 worth of diesel.” Gold purchased at the show and later melted goes back into the market without incurring that environmental cost. “Taking what is not being used and reusing it is stewardship of the environment,” says Dick. “Silver or gold can easily be reclaimed using very little energy to melt down and purify it. While Ursa deals directly with a smelter, Dick’s hobbyist and collector background affects where the coins he buys may end up. “I’m a collector and I want coins to remain coins, not be melted,” explains Dick. “I’m in touch with and in the community of collectors, so if somebody has a reasonably rare coin, I know who needs it.” Ursa Major Gold, Silver and Coin show takes place from 10 am-5 pm on Saturday, May 27, and from 10 am-4 pm on Sunday, May 28, at Cranberry Seniors Centre, 6792 Cranberry Street.
