Pop-up store plants permanent roots Blue Sky Consignment offers savings and unique shopping experience What started as pop-up establishment has become a permanent fixture on Marine Avenue. Blue Sky Consignment owner Jenni Dyer originally planned to open a temporary, two-week store carrying ladies clothing, accessories, shoes and home décor items. “It was going to be a pop-up shop open seasonally, then once we had the space and set it up we had phenomenal results,” explains Dyer. “It really showed there was a need in the community so we kept the store open for a month, then three more months, before committing to one year.” All stock is selected for quality, brand and current fashion styles, although a small selection of vintage pieces is available as well, says Dyer, who is embarking on the new venture while continuing her position as leisure and lifestyles coordinator at the Kiwanis assisted-living facility. Consignment stores bridge the gap between thrift stores and boutiques selling new items. Pieces at Blue Sky are either new, or nearly new; some even have original sales tags attached. “People may have purchased something they only wore once or changed their mind and couldn’t return it,” says Dyer. “All of our pieces still have a lot of life in them and are only very gently used, if not new. Probably 30 per cent of our stock items still have tags.” Dyer consigned her own clothing for several years before opening the business and says consignment shopping is a hot trend around the world, providing consumers with opportunities to find unique pieces while sticking to a budget. “Consignment is especially great for a community like Powell River as it brings items and brand names into the marketplace that are not available in other local stores,” says Dyer. Shoppers benefit from reduced prices, with most items available for between 60 off 15% parts all

and 75 per cent off the retail cost, and a diverse collection to browse through. In addition to variety and savings, the uniqueness of a consignment store provides other shopping opportunities: hidden treasures and fashion items missed out on the year before. “People love to shop and look for treasures; they can come here and possibly find something they would never find elsewhere because it has been in somebody’s closet, or wasn’t offered in Powell River before,” says Dyer. “We have items from local boutiques as well, so it might be a piece from last fashion season shoppers wish they had purchased; they can come in and find it here.” Open from 12-5 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 10 am-5 pm on Saturdays, the neatly organized store displays items in a way that provides cusEvent! Fun for the whole family • Fishing Clarinetist Noemi Sallai [left], percussionist Justin Doute [middle], and cellist Stephen Hawkey [right] performed recently at PRISMA’s Concerto Competition semifinals and were selected as finalists.

“To perform the music of Tchaikovsky with a Russian orchestra in the Tchaikovsk y Music Conservatory was a surreal combination,” says Barroero. Barroero’s performance at PRISMA this time last year still stands out to him as a memorable experience. “I’ve had the pleasure of performing with orchestras around the United States and Canada,” he says, “but that particular performance was unique in

the sense that the audience was extremely supportive of the music students.” Now, three new students will have the opportunity to perform during Saturday’s closing concert for a chance at winning the experience in Moscow that Barroero enjoyed. Following the final round of the competition, the second half of Saturday’s concert will also feature Ma h ler’s Adagio f rom Sy mphony no. 10 and Strauss’ Rosenkavalier Suite.

Wilderness trips without garbage Home to 32 lakes, an abundance of rivers, beaches, trails and campgrounds, Powell River is the perfect place for an outdoor adventure. With a little planning, that next adventure can take place without resulting in a pile of garbage in the midst of nature’s paradise. For car camping and beachside barbecues, skip the disposable propane canisters and invest in a reusable propane tank. A five-pound propane tank costs a mere $5 to fill, lasts for many meals and will even fit into the back hatch of a sea kayak. Recycle green propane canisters at Augusta Recyclers and make the investment, which will save money in the long run. For the lightweight backpacker, look for a refillable stove solution. Many options are out there these days, so skip the disposable canisters. Buying bulk ingredients instead of prepackaged can also save another trip to the recycling depot and make backpacks that much lighter. For those who are super keen, dehydrate meals, then package them in material that can be recycled or reused at the end of the trip, as opposed to non-recyclable, laminate packaging that pre-made dehydrated meals usually come in. Putting in the effort at home to reduce packaging waste and choosing reusable or recyclable items before heading out into the great outdoors is rewarding. It is still possible to have separate collections for

LET’S TALK TRASH compost and recyclables away from home; just plan ahead. When bags are a bit lighter at the tail end of the trip, consider packing out some debris other folks have left behind. One or two pieces of trash often has a magnetic power to accumulate more. Fire pits are notorious trash-collection points, which is shocking since burning plastic releases toxic fumes. When exploring the great outdoors this summer, keep it simple and follow this rule: pack it in, pack it out. And, if possible, pack out a bit extra. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

Healthy sleeping patterns Sleep habits are more important than we think. As teenagers we go through one of the biggest developmental periods of our lives, which means we should be sleeping more. Teens need at least nine and a half hours of sleep per night, yet we are only sleeping an average of seven hours each day. One issue is the time we start our day at school. We should be starting our day off no earlier than 8:30 am, but perhaps 10 am would be more reasonable. Research shows the average teenager has difficulty processing until that hour. We may be able to fit in an extra hour of sleep and feel more rested and prepared to face the rest of the day. Why are we only sleeping for seven hours? As teens we have a habit of going to bed at an unreasonable hour, but why? Perhaps it is all the academic stress we face,

STUDENT LIFE By Macy How especially at a late hour when we have the time to think. Staying up late to finish homework is not an uncommon occurrence, but some of us also wake up early to finish a project even after a late night. We also have the gift of technology to waste away hours at night. It is not hard to become lost on the internet, constantly telling yourself, “Just one more click,” or, “I’ll turn it off in 15 minutes.” At times we stay up to the

point where, even if we did go to sleep, we would basically only be running on three hours of rest. We need to realize that running on such little sleep can have serious effects on our bodies. We need rest. So much goes on when we shut our eyes and begin to dream and so many benefits come with sleep; a healthy amount can be associated with living longer, better memory, reduced levels of stress and improved general well-being. There should be no shame around going to bed earlier. If we want to take care of our bodies we need to create healthy sleeping patterns. We need to know it will improve our current wellbeing and ability to work in school. Developing these healthy patterns will also affect our adult life. Macy How is a grade nine st udent at École Côte-du-Soleil.

Roses to those people who still remember to use those two magic words we were taught as small children: “thank you.” Sour Raspberries to those who have forgotten good manners to acknowledge gifts received for birthdays, graduation, showers or weddings. Your rudeness is inexcusable, no matter your age. 13,000-plus Roses to Tla’amin Nation singers and dancers for their brave speech at PRISMA on the Beach. Have your thoughts published in the Peak Weekender Email publisher@prpeak.com with your roses and raspberries Please do not use names or specific identifiers, all commentors will be kept anonymous

On behalf of Westview Elementary School students, staff and parents,

A. You may change or revoke your enduring Power of Attorney provided you are still capable of understanding the nature and consequences of doing so. You would need to make the change or revocation in writing and have your signature witnessed. After you change or revoke your Power of Attorney you must give written notice to your cousin to let him know that he is no longer your Power of Attorney. Alternatively, your cousin could resign as attorney by giving written notice to you and to any alternate attorney you have appointed. If you need to change or revoke your Power of Attorney, or if you have other estate planning needs, please contact our office.

Get results, fast!

A lot of neighbours, friends and family really liked the story and people are stopping me on the street and saying they are going to give me a call. The response has been fantastic. The whole process was enjoyable, right from the preliminary discussion to the interview and photography. It was smooth and well worth the money. My business and brand have definitely benefited from purchasing Front Page News.

1105 Obituaries In Loving Memory of John Patrick Wilson (Smiley) John passed away suddenly at his home in Campbell River. He was born in London, England, March 28, 1951. He was predeceased by his parents Alf and Gladys and his sister Linda. He leaves behind his sister Margaret who will dearly miss him, and his brother Richard. John will be missed by his extended family and his large circle of friends in Powell River, on the Island, and all involved through Jimmy K.

Josephine Schulkowsky August 28, 1923 - June 3, 2017

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Josie. She was predeceased by her husband Vince on July 11, 1990. Josie is survived by her children Suzanne (Jim), Kathy (Gerry), Paul (Debbie), Agnes (Doug) and Mike (Lori), as well as 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 10 step-grandchildren. Josie was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan. She and Vince moved to Powell River in 1948. Josie was an active member of the Catholic church and well-loved for her sense of humour, cheerfulness and willingness to help out. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, embroidery and raising chickens and geese. A special thanks to the staff when mom was at Olive Devaud Residence and to staff at Evergreen Care Unit for the love you showered on her. A funeral mass was held for family and friends on Friday, June 9. Donations can be made to Powell River Stroke Recovery Club and/or to the Catholic Women's League.

1010 Announcements Doctor Natalia Roehlig I wish to announce that as of August 25, 2017, I will be leaving my medical practice. Doctor Kati Bahadori will take over August 28. A detailed letter is available in my office.

Brooks Secondary School welcome figure ceremony

Brooks Secondary School’s entire student body, along with educators, Tla’amin Nation elders and Powell River civic leaders, came together on Wednesday, June 14, to witness the unveiling of the school’s new welcome figure. Under the guidance of carvers Ivan Rosypskye and Phil Russell, a group of students participated in a special program that taught traditional first nations carving techniques, culture and history. School District 47 plans to eventually have a first nations carving at each of its schools. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS 1.
