Independent store fills market void PR Appliance and Mattress taps into loyal following built at previous business When PR Appliance and Mattress joined the Powell River business scene in December 2016, the name suggested a new player had entered the market. While the store at 124-4801 Joyce Avenue in Crossroads Village Shopping Centre was in fact a new enterprise, owner/manager Carl Haakenson had been selling appliances and mattresses in Powell River for many years. “We were a Sears store for 27 years and then Sears shut us down at the end of May last year; they wanted out of smaller towns,” says Haakenson. “We decided to continue on as an appliance/mattress store.” Haakenson says although it took six months to become fully operational, transitioning into the new enterprise was a smooth process. Customers who shopped locally at Sears can expect the same quality of products and service level when they visit the new store, he adds. “Our product knowledge and ability to serve the customer are the same; we built a loyal following based on that criteria and continue to operate that way,” explains Haakenson. “We have retained the same employees, so we have continuity in terms of experience.” Operating as an independent store, PR Appliance and Mattress is still able to offer major brands including Whirlpool, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Maytag, Electrolux, Samsung and Bosch appliances, and Simmons mattresses. month for products from most manufacturers. Independence provides benefits to customers, such as access to brands and items not previously available. “It’s nice to get away from a big corporation that really defined what you do, what you put on the floor and what you can and cannot sell,” says Haakenson. “Now we have more freedom to sell things we weren’t able to before.” Plans are underway to expand current product lines and add items such as air conditioners MATCH

less steel are starting to dominate the market,” he adds. “Black is a darker, deeper, smudge-proof stainless steel; it has a really nice look. Every manufacturer has their own version of it now, whereas two years ago there was almost nothing like that.” Along with stainless options, black and white choices are also available. The days of almond and blue are long gone, says Haakenson. With WiFi connections common in most homes, fridges and other appliances now come ready

to connect to the network. “Smart homes can tell you everything you need to know at a glance,” says Haakenson. “Your fridge can tell you what’s missing and create a shopping list, or allow you to listen to music; it’s cool stuff.” Remote access adds to the convenience of being connected, allowing homeowners to monitor and control appliances while away from home. “Smart phones can do just about anything in a kitchen,” says Haakenson, “from turning on and off the range to checking your laundry.” According to Haakenson, pricing at PR Appliance and Mattress is as good as anywhere in Canada and price matching is available. Customers have been impressed with how low prices have become, he says. “We are always making sure our prices are up to date,” says Haakenson. “Customers sometimes have this false idea that it’s going to cost $5,000 to do a kitchen appliance renovation. That’s not necessarily the case; it can be done for a lot less and with higher quality products than 10 years ago.” PR Appliance and Mattress offers extended warranties and can arrange for delivery and installation of all items sold. A complete list of products is available on the company’s website.

When Jim Baron moved to Powell River more than a decade ago, he was not sure at first how his music would fit into the local scene. It did not take long, however, for him to find an audience for his classic ’50s and ’60s cover songs and some of his own originals. “All I heard when I first got here was hard rock,” says Baron. “I toured with the Legends of Rock and Roll and we used to play concert halls and high-end cabarets, so when I came here I really didn’t feel like I fit musically.” Baron, whose trio band plays The Vault on Friday, July 21, has established a fan base he can call his own, as well as appealing to music fans of all ages, given the chance. With a set list that spans the work of The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and much more, Baron says the universal language of music spans generations. “Everyone can enjoy the music I play,” he says. “It’s

be intimate and perfectly suited to the trio’s brand of rockabilly. “It will be hard not to dance to the sounds of the Jim Baron Trio,” says Sharp. “Come early for a good seat because this show will sell out.” Ba ron g rew up in Winnipeg and has been fronting bands since he was 15 years old. Whether it is his solo work or fronting a band, the constant is Baron’s soaring voice and precision guitar playing. “Winnipeg was a great place to cut my teeth and develop my chops because audiences there are tough,” he says, “and you have to work hard for their loyalty.” Baron’s trio includes local musicians Daniel Richard on bass and Alex Aumais on drums. Both players are comfortable with Baron’s improvisational style and love of song medleys. “The beauty of working with these guys is they can read me like a book,” says Baron. “With most bands you have a set list, but with these guys everything is fluid and halfway through a song I can morph into something else if I need to. Those are the kind of musicians I need to play with.”

PICNIC PLAN: According to Powell River Regional District’s Let’s Talk Trash team, by thinking ahead, anyone can enjoy outings and picnics involving a meal without accumulating garbage, recycling and unnecessary waste. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Zero-waste picnics

Top zero-waste picnic tips: 1. A set of dishes, cups and cutlery should top the list when thinking zero waste. We all know too well how quickly an innocent treat can end in a mountain of disposable cups, straws, ketchup packages and togo containers. Even paper plates are not ideal as they still make use of raw resources and chemical bleaches, and have some added transportation karma at both ends of its short life. 2. Leftover plastic cutlery from a previous meal out can be stored in the car or in an easy grabbag at home for the next meal-on-the-go.

All gear provided. No experience necessary. For more info visit www.SoberSports.ca

LET’S TALK TRASH

3. To reach the next level and avoid using a mound of paper napkins, get crafty and make fabric napkins from scraps around the house. 4. Investing in a backpack or grass basket may provide inspiration to spend more time in the great outdoors. 5. A picnic is not complete without food for the ants and dog to nibble on. Think pre-cut veggies and easy-to-eat fruit such as strawberries and grapes. Bulk bread, buns and homemade dips can complete the treat. 6. Do not forget beverages. Go for portable water

bottles that can be refilled at a fountain. Homemade sun tea made from garden herbs such as mint, steeped in the sun, can quench anyone’s thirst on a hot day. 7. Potluck-style picnics are another easy solution to approach zero-waste. Encourage friends to bring a dish from home rather than over-packaged, storebought goods. Plan ahead and pack some consideration for the planet alongside the carrots and dip. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

Top staging tips to speed up the sale of a home

Home staging is the art of styling a home to make it more sellable. While hiring a professional stager is a great investment, a number of staging practices can be incorporated by sellers.

Carpets, upholstery and drapery are at their best after being professionally cleaned. Let the light in The more natural light that comes into a home, the better. Make sure all windows are clean and remove any

screens. Keep blinds and curtains open. Use strategically placed mirrors to further increase the amount of natural light in the home. Finishing touches A bowl of fruit on the kitchen counter and settings on the dining room table are inviting touches. Make the beds, neatly fold towels in bathrooms and make sure the temperature is neither too warm or too cold.

A guy who was fairly shy and had these blue eyes combined with a southern accent that just killed me worked the front desk a few of the nights I was there. Since training had me in San Francisco four times throughout the year, I had seen this man a number of times already. We had exchanged some small talk over the series of visits, but things had not gone beyond casual flirtation. This particular visit was

HEART OF THE MATTER

what I thought would be my final one. I had been thinking about that the whole time I was there, then the second-to-last day arrived. After class, I returned to the hotel and he was at the front desk as usual, but something came over me. Maybe it was the fact that I was near the end of a life-changing program, or maybe because I figured I would never see this blueeyed, southern-drawl of a man again. Whatever it was, I knew I just needed to go for it. I went back to my room and spent the next 10 minutes coaching myself into walking back down the two flights of stairs and asking the man out for a drink at the end of his shift. I stepped out of my room and began walking down the hallway toward the first flight of stairs, but then my nerves got the best of me and I scurried back to my room. I tried to go again, but heard voices coming from dow n s t a i r s . I qu ic k l y turned around again and walked back to my room, waiting for the coast to clear. Finally, I made it down the stairs, poked my

head around the corner and “casually” asked the question. After his shift was over we headed over to a nearby pub. Once we were sitting at a table, with drinks in hand, he turned to me and asked, “Were you really nervous about asking me out?” I replied that I might have been a bit nervous and asked him why. His reply: “Well, I saw you on the camera pacing back and forth in the hallway.” I do not remember what else was said that night, but I do remember wanting to climb under the table to die of embarrassment and wondering if rejection would have been easier than being caught in my nervousness. The moral of this story is that I reached for somet h i ng I w a nt e d, e v en though it was terrifying. Not only did I survive it, but now I also have a funny story to share about the hilarity of reaching for something you want, regardless of the fear of rejection.

6412w38

Rejection: one of those things many of us try to avoid at all costs. It is incredible how much of a stranglehold the fear of ex per ienci ng reject ion can have on each of us, to the point where we stop reaching for things we really want in our lives and relationships. What does that leave us with? Not a whole lot of truly pleasurable experiences. When it comes to dating, the fear of rejection can make or break a person’s love life. For some people, rejection from a stranger might not be a big deal, but for many of us the thought can be emotionally crippling. The unfortunate thing about those of us who are fearful is that we often miss out on things we want because we do not reach for what we want. This means approaching someone for a date, phone number, conversation or even a kiss can feel like stepping off a cliff into a lake of fire. Who wants to do that? It is scary and uncomfortable. I get it. I am one of those very people. A few years ago I bumped right up against this edge. I

Planning for Health Care & Personal Care Answering questions from the event on May 10

On May 10th the Powell River Division of Family Practice hosted an information session about Planning for Health and Personal planning. Over 85 people attended. Although many questions were answered during the session, some people still had questions afterwards. Below are the answers to the questions. Please visit Nidus.ca for more information or to (re)-watch the information video. and Power of Attorney?

Will. Is the RA9 replacing what I currently have in place? A Representation Agreement is for when you are alive and ends when you die, then a Will takes over. The Will is only looked at AFTER your death. Sometimes people name the same people in their RA9, their EPA and their Will for continuity. Leaving your papers with your family doctor won’t help at other locations. What are ER and Ambulance authorized to do until a representative can give/withhold consent?

A Representation Agreement (RA) is the only legal document that covers health and personal care matters, such as routine

Emergency responders do not wait for a representative. The law says consent is not required in a true emergency, unless the representative is available. The representative should be in contact with the hospital as soon as possible.

A Power of Attorney (POA) ends if the person who made it becomes mentally incapable. An Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) ‘endures’ past incapability. Nidus recommends when

What are the options for people without family, beyond spouse, and limited access to close friends due to aging?

documents have NOTHING to do with authorizing health or personal care decisions. Nidus recommends that people go to a lawyer or notary public for the EPA. Besides my family doctor and Representative, who needs access to my Representation Agreement? Your alternate decision maker (alternate) should also have a copy. If you go into assisted living, care facility or hospital they to ensure everyone has access to the agreement if needed. Could you have more than one Representative when making an RA9? For instance, my three children? Yes. Nidus can customize an RA9 form if you want more than 1 alternate. If you name more than 1 alternate, they will need to keep in close contact with one another.

Anyone can be on their Representation Agreement. Some people ask their neighbours. Why is a Living Will not a legal document? There is no law in Canada for living wills. Health care is not only about refusing treatment at end-of-life, the traditional approach of living wills. What do I do when I do not have a computer? The public library provides access to computers. Is Nidus available for people outside of BC? No. See the Nidus website for information about personal planning across Canada. How is Nidus funded? Nidus is funded by donations (they can provide tax receipts), modest fees for services, and project grants.

What happens when your Representative is in another Province? Nidus developed an online Personal Planning Registry to support with that issue. You can print wallet cards from the

usually the 4th Wednesday of the month. They also have a video on their website.

to look up a record in the Registry. Make sure the ‘emergency contact’ is the representative. It is also good to provide neighbours the name and phone number of your representative and alternate, so they can call right away when they see an ambulance.

Dying with Dignity: http://www.dyingwithdignity.ca/ Medical Assistance in Dying: http://www.vch.ca/public-health/ health-topics-a-z/topics/medical-assistance-in-dying

Is the RA9 valid when you are out of town or in another province? No, although some provinces, like Alberta and Ontario, recognize the RA. If you are travelling and have a serious accident or illness the law of that province or country will kick in.

How can I access new information and updates? Nidus has a newsletter that provides updates, for example on new resources and changes to the law or policies.

THE LAW CORNER Q. Am I legally required to leave a portion of my estate to my parents? A. No, section 60 of the Wills, Estates and Succession Act says that a will-maker who does not, in the court’s opinion, make adequate provision for his or her own spouse or children may be subject to the court making an order for a provision that it thinks is “adequate, just and equitable.” There is no equivalent provision requiring you to provide for a parent. If you die without a will, however, and have no surviving spouse or children, then your estate would be divided, by statute, in equal shares between your parents (if both are living) or paid entirely to your surviving parent. If you have further questions or need to update your estate plan, please contact me.

He will lovingly be remembered by his parents Wes and Marj Fraser, siblings Wendy and Frank Martinig, Doug and Kerry Fraser, Scott Fraser, and Terri and Mark Greatbach, all his many nieces and nephews and his best friend Harry. Jim worked many years in the costruction and logging industry. He spent many years up north in the Charlottes and Prince Rupert and returned to Powell River to retire. The family would like to thank Doctor White and the nurses at Powell River General Hospital for all the continuous care Jim received. Donations to Diabetes Canada in memory of James will be greatly appreciated. Go to diabetes.ca or call 1.800.226.8464. Jim will always be remembered for the love he gave his family. AROUND TOWN

BC Bike Race

The 600-plus mountain bikers who competed in the BC Bike Race have good reasons for consistently ranking Powell River as one of the favourite stages in the worldfamous event, beginning with the warm welcome cyclists received at Westview ferry terminal. Two nights of camping in perfect weather on Willingdon Beach and the pristine condition of local bike trails proved once again that Powell River deserves the accolade. The 10th annual edition of the race rolled through town Friday, July 7, and Saturday, July 8. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS
