Centre welcomes families Inclusion Powell River offers children’s programs and services in Cranberry Nestled in a forest glade, the facility at 6831 Artaban Street (formerly Community Living Place) became home to Cranberry Child D e v elopment a nd Fa m i l y Resource Centre in August 2015. “We’ve been in this building for a year now,” says Laura Kew, director of child and family services. “We were in the Jean Pike Centre on Alberni Street, but we traded spaces with the adult services program to better meet everyone’s needs.” Programs offered at the fa mi ly-f r iend ly cent re, through Inclusion Powell R i v e r, i n c l u d e I n f a n t Development, Supported Child Development, and Early Intervention. A physiotherapist, occupational therapist and FASD/CDBC key worker are also available onsite. “Mo s t p e ople r e c og n i z e Inclusion Powell River as adult services and don’t realize we also have children’s services,” s a y s L au r a . “ We pr ov ide programs contracted by BC Ministry of Children and Family Development.” Families can be referred to programs in a number of ways: by a family physician, public-health nurse or teacher; or families can self-refer. “A physician or nurse might see a child and identify some concerns or development that is not quite on track,” explains Laura. Refer ra ls a re a lso received through daycares and preschools. “Anyone can call if they have questions or concerns about their child’s development and want to talk about it,” says Laura.

[Standing from left] Yumi Ball, Lisa Heavenor, Lee Illing, Lesa Calder, Shawn James, Rose Cleator, Daniela D'Onofrio, Laura Cocksedge and [sitting from left] Laura Kew and Georgina Nesci.

“It’s a way for them to learn about what their child’s needs are and how we can help.” A new program available for parents of adolescents and teens is an education and support group called Parents Together. Developed by Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, the program supports parents who are experiencing challenges in parenting this difficult age group. “This is a great family-support program, but isn’t part of our funding,” says Laura. “We’ll need community support to keep it going.” In addition to these p r o g r a m s , C r a n b e r r y Centre also houses the newly renamed Cranberry Preschool, featuring developmentally appropriate, child-centred activities and an engaging indoor and outdoor

curriculum. “We have a new preschool teacher,” says Laura. “Daniela D’Onofrio has wonderful ideas for getting kids out into nature.” D’Onofrio ta kes over from Georgina Nesci, who recently retired after 28 years. Students will learn and play in an environment that nurtures and encourages unique learning through exploration and discovery. Beginning in September, morning classes will be held for two age groups: 30 months to three years on Tuesday and Thursday and four-year-olds on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The older group will focus on skill development, preparing for kindergarten and nature-based activities. “We have the forest at our back door and a fenced play area that we use rain or shine,” says Laura.

Powell River and Region Transition House Society is now taking registrants for a charity golf tournament at Myrtle Point Golf Club.

MacLennan said support from the business community has been exceptional and the tournament will also serve to raise awareness about the transition house society’s important and long-running services for abused women and children. “A lot of people in Powell River don’t understand how many women we serve,” said MacLennan. “They think this sort of thing doesn’t happen in Powell River, and I’m here to tell you that I can’t remember the last time we didn’t have someone in Grace House.” MacLennan said funds

raised will go toward future programs and needs at the transition house, such as playground equipment and playroom updates. Draw prizes for golfers include two return tickets to Vancouver donated by Pacific Coastal Airlines. A catered dinner by Myrtle Point’s Orca Bistro will follow the tournament. With other activ ities planned throughout the afternoon and evening of Friday, September 16, including complimentar y on-course beer tasters from Townsite Brewing, MacLennan hopes to see registration for the golf tournament fill up fast.

“It’s going to be a great day and there will be lots of fun things going on at the different golf holes,” said MacLennan, “and, r e m e m b e r, t h o s e $2 mulligans will be very important!”

A charity golf tournament planned for September w ill raise money for Powell River and Region Transition House Society’s Grace House, but what organizers need now are golfers. Current outreach coordinator Maureen MacLennan is challenging local businesses and organizations to register for 9 Holes for the House, a fun golf event featuring draw prizes and dinner afterward. “For those who have supported Grace House in the past, and those who haven’t, come on out and pick up a golf club,” said MacLennan. The mixed tournament is open to golfers of all skill levels, which is why $2 mulligan cards, which will serve as a second-chance for botched shots with all proceeds going to the transition house, will be important and, for some, necessary.

NOTICE OF PROPOSED TM MOBILE INC. (“TELUS”) TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITIES DESCRIPTION: As part of the public consultation process required by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and in consultation with the City of Powell River, TELUS is inviting the public to comment on three (3) proposed telecommunications facilities both consisting of 15.85m utility poles. The wireless installation will improve wireless services within the City of Powell River. Preventing mosquito reproduction is key

LOCATION MAPS:

The beast arrives unannounced, landing on a welcome strip of flesh that offers a delicious buffet. It pierces the victim’s skin, simultaneously injecting a special fluid to make its task simpler and faster. Then it draws the blood it so desperately needs for its young. Witness the female mosquito at work. The mosquito is an insidious beast with the power to keep an adult wide awake with its steady, high-pitched wing beats. Where is it? Will you find it before you feel that inevitable attack on your skin? Mosquitoes have relatively short lifespans; males live 10 days or less. Females can live up to two months and some can hibernate up to six months. During their brief lifetimes, females can lay eggs every three days, up to 300 at a time. All mosquitoes require standing water for eggs to develop through larva, pupa and adult stages. For what it’s worth, males do not care about you, they feed on nectar, but females need a blood meal to nourish their

HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet developing eggs. Some mosquito species prefer humans, others birds, cattle or different animals. Feeding times vary, with some species preferring evening hours, while others prefer the daytime. But how does the female find you? Is it just good luck? Mosquitoes are actually attracted to the carbon dioxide (CO2) we exhale, along with certain chemicals that exude from our skin, and perspiration. A mosquito can detect CO2 from as far away as 25 metres. It will fly back and forth through the CO2 plume until locating its victim. For most of us, the main

irritation of a mosquito bite is the itchy, red welt it produces. This is caused by our own allergic reaction to the insect’s saliva. Our immune reaction releases histamine, there’s itchiness and the bump and redness; you know this story. Though worries over mosquitoes is minor, we know they spread disease. We have watched for West Nile virus in recent years and now Zika raises concern. Both are serious, but the big hitters of mosquito-borne diseases remain malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and chikungunya. Here, the focus should be on obtaining the right protective vaccinations prior to any travel abroad. T he b e s t pr ot e c t ion against mosquitoes is prevention. Start by making their reproduction more difficult. Dispose of any stagnant water around your property; old tires, pet dishes, bird baths, empty flower pots and pool covers. Chemical protection is a sound second option. Insect repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET)

in concentrations of 30 to 50 per cent is very effective. Also effective is eucalyptus oil, but only the synthetic (p-methanediol) version. You can ignore “natural” repellents such as geranium oil, citronella or peppermint as their effectiveness is limited, as is the use of bug zappers that mostly kill flies and moths. What about bats and birds? Do they help? Not really. Neither consume many mosquitoes. The two main mosquito predators are fish and dragonflies. Fish will feed on mosquitoes before they become fully mature. Dragonfly larvae eat mosquito lar vae and adult dragonflies prey on adult mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can turn a backyard barbecue or quiet time on the patio into an unpleasant experience. Get rid of standing water, stock up on DEET and you will be just fine.
