“How can we get better at supporting people we serve to have lives they want to live, achieve their dreams and feel empowered and included?” says Tipton. “How can we become a better employer and better at engaging community, and can the community help us with our vision? How do we strategically use our resources to achieve our vision?” To answer those questions, the association will begin a strategic planning process in January that includes community members, people it serves and their fami-

lies, employees, volunteers and its board of directors. “We look forward to sharing this process and its results with everyone,” says Tipton. “We invite people to step forward, become a member and participate; it takes a community to imagine its future and what it wants to become.” Tipton says the organization changed its name to Inclusion Powell River because it matters to the health of the community that each member is a contributor. “Everyone needs to feel a part of something in order to experience self-worth and feel valued,” she says. “Each of us has something to give.” Inclusion Powell River hosts an open house on November 15 with special guests David Roche and Marlena Blavin presenting their film, Love at Second Sight. “It’s an incredible film about difference and belonging, judgment and inclusion,” says Tipton. “David and Marlena are consummate storytellers.” Roche and Blavin will also conduct a free storytelling workshop where each participant will have the opportunity to tell their story. “It will be an amazing and inclusive event,” says Tipton, “although participation will be limited.” To register, go to inclusionpr. ca and use the Eventbrite link. Saws buzz and hammers bang as ARC Community Event Centre renovations move toward completion. The project is just one of many exciting events planned for Inclusion Powell River (IPR) this fall. “Everything is in keeping with the desire to be an organization that provides excellent support and advocacy for adults with developmental disabilities, children with extra needs and their families, and for senior citizens in the region,” says IPR CEO Lilla Tipton. Taking its name from geometry, the ARC is a bridge and a segment that completes the circle of community, says Tipton. IPR’s vision is that individuals with developmental disabilities are fully included in the community, she adds. “Just like it takes a village to raise a child,” says Tipton, “it takes a community working together to learn how to include everyone.” Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons will be the guest speaker at IPR’s annual general meeting on Thursday, September 28, at the newly renovated facility located within Jean Pike Centre at 7055 Alberni Street. Simons will talk about new developments IPR has been long advocating for, such as the recent increase to BC’s Person with Disability benefits. Anyone can join the advocacy by becoming a member of the society. ARC renovations were made possible with funds received through Powell River Community

talented and they need to be in order to properly pay tribute to Ozzy and Black Sabbath.” Koopman says the idea to pay tribute to Osbourne, whose band Black Sabbath is heralded as one of the world’s first heavy metal bands, came about when some of his musician friends asked him if he would like to start a band again. “I suggested we challenge ourselves and do something we have all never done before. I proposed doing a tribute to Ozzy, and it just flourished from there,”

Paying tribute to larger-than-life heavy metal hero Ozzy Osbourne and his trailblazing hard rock band Black Sabbath is no easy task, but a group of local musicians, fronted by vocalist Jeff Koopman, say they are up for the challenge. Koopman and bandmates John Tait, Tony Shigeoka and Brad Lemna, along with special guest Walter Martella on keyboards, have spent months preparing for their Bourne to be Ozz show on Saturday, September 9, at Evergreen Theatre. All of the musicians have decades of live show experience behind them and grew up on hard rock and heavy metal. “We all knew it was going to be a project, but we didn’t realize how much work, top to bottom, it would be,” says Koopman. “It really is musical theatre. A trashy past from the ashes

LET’S TALK TRASH The facility could offer all available waste diversion opportunities in one location, so that what remains for landfill is considerably less. With this as motivation, Pow el l R i v er Re g ion a l District applied for and was awarded a site-specific federal grant of $6 million to go toward cleaning up the old incinerator site and building the centre. Launch is not a go quite yet though, as additional funds to complete the project would at least in part be coming from taxpayers. Creation of a Resource Recovery Centre, along

with eight other key recommendations, are all included in the draft update to Powell River’s 10-year waste management plan, also known as the Solid Waste Management and Resource Recovery Plan. The plan is essentially a blueprint for how we will reduce, reuse, recycle and manage our waste and is a requirement for all regional districts by the environment ministry. Without such a plan, it is much harder to achieve wastereduction targets. Currently, Powell River sends 458 kilograms of waste per person per year to

In the not-too-distant past, Powell River garbage trucks dropped off their loads at a local incinerator, which was essentially a controlled bonfire in a concrete chamber just across the highway from Willingdon Beach. When those operations stopped in 1995, waste materials such as incinerator ash were left onsite, along with piles of glass, tires, roofing and building materials, stumps and asbestos. Now the old Marine Avenue site has, not surprisingly, been deemed contaminated and needs to be cleaned up to meet BC Ministry of Environment standards. Rather than removing what was left behind at considerable cost or partially remediating the land to a state where it is not fully accessible, an inspiring idea has arisen from the ashes: full remediation of the site followed by the building of a Resource Recovery Centre as a onestop shop for residual waste, upcycling, reusing and recycling in a clean, state-of-the-art facility.

I’ve been wanting to write about the grey zone for a while; it has been slowly growing into a fully formed conversation inside my mind. While I understand everyone processes things differently, I have noticed the grey zone present in my own world for ages. I thought maybe it was just me and my way of feeling things deeply, or perhaps just fear of revealing a challenging part of myself in a relationship. Lately, this wonderful thing has been happening where friends and clients are sharing their experiences with this very challenge, unprompted. This collective sharing from different people in my community felt like a push to bring me here and write about the grey zone. I’m talking about what

HEART OF THE MATTER By Niseema Emery happens when there is an upset in a relationship, that thing where a break in connection happens: a fight, an argument or hurt, and repair has not happened yet. In the grey zone, while not actively engaging in conflict, you are definitely not in connection. Maybe

you are still able to talk about the necessities of life: picking up the kids, what to have for dinner or errands, et cetera. But there is not much more beyond surface-level chatter. Touch, affection and heartfelt communication go right out the window when you are stuck in the grey zone. It can last for an hour, days or even years, depending on the relationship. The thing about the grey zone that really gets me is the loss of creativity and overall interest for however long you are stuck in it. Usually, I will not be able to complete any writing; my inspiration will be about as alive as a rock. Maybe I’ll take the dogs for a walk, and sure, it is relieving not to be arguing and accessing some space to breathe or think. Maybe you go out with

PEAK WEEKENDER

some friends, go to work or to the beach. That may look like you are taking space and having a break, but it also will not feel like free, unconditional space because your mind is clouded or, at the very least, space is taken up in the back of your mind. This can feel heavy, sticky or damp and make usually enjoyable engagements feel like climbing a mountain with a backpack full of mud. You can lock it up and file it away, but the reality is that filing things away means they are still there, taking up precious space and condemning your relationship to the grey zone. The only way to escape the grey zone is to turn toward each other and co-create repair. Niseema Emery is a certified intimacy and relationship coach in Powell River.

Q: My ex pays child support. I have just purchased school supplies and school clothes for my children. Are those costs shared?

Sunday, September 17 37th annual Terry Fox Run takes place at 10 am on Sunday, September 17, at Powell River Recreation Complex . Reg ist rat ion starts at 8:30 am. Entrants can run, walk, cycle or skate a 3.5 or 10-kilometre route. A free pancake breakfast follows for participants and volunteers.

A: No. The Federal Child Support Guidelines set out “extraordinary expenses” in section 7 (items that are payable in addition to child support). Clothing and school supplies are not extraordinary and should be covered by child support. However, if you have equal parenting time and neither party pays support to the other, you may want to make an agreement that those costs are shared. If you have any questions about child support, please make an appointment to see me.

AROUND TOWN

Sunshine Music Festival

By all accounts, the lineup of performers Sunshine Music Festival artistic director Robert Mackle put together for the 36th annual edition of the Labour Day long-weekend event surpassed previous years, and Palm Beach provided the perfect setting. Performances by Dawn Pemberton, Deep Sea Gypsies and Khari Wendell McLelland, and a frenzied final act by Roots Roundup amped up the dance party for festival-goers who soaked up the last days of summer holidays. Local musicians were also featured at the summer music festival. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS
