Roots and blues legend hits town

Established guitarist and singer Tim Williams knows the Powell River area well. The Calgary-based musician, who has been playing roots and blues since the ’60s when he was in his teens, now has a son and three grandchildren living here. “I have played in Powell River several times over the years,” says Williams. “It was nice to see signs of a renewed downtown the last time I was there.” Williams got his start in music in Southern California, learning from legendary blues musician Lightnin’ Hopk ins and songwriter and actor Hoyt Axton, among others. Touring small and large towns in North America, Eu r op e, Nor t h A f r ic a , Mexico, Cuba and Australia over the years, Williams says he has seen many different music scenes and believes it is not always the size of a town that matters. “Sma l l cent res ca n

Singer/guitarist Tim Williams is in town this Saturday for a concert and workshop combination at Cranberry Community Hall.

WHERE: Cranberry Community Hall PRICE: $20/$30 workshop and concert INFO: starbuckna.com also have thriving music scenes,” he says. “It’s usually dependent on the

presence in the community of some experienced mentors and some dedi-

cated promoters.” Williams’ upcoming appearance in Powell River at Cranberry Community Hall will be complemented by an afternoon guitar workshop where attendees can learn from the master himself. “The workshop will cover some fingerpicking, open tunings and slide,” he says, adding that the evening concert will highlight songs from his most recent two albums, 2013’s The Blue Highway and 2015’s So Low. Tickets for the workshop and/or concert are available at the Peak office or at the door. A discount is being offered for those who attend both the afternoon workshop and evening concert. Williams says those who are not that familiar with the roots and blues genre may be surprised at what they hear at his show, including some of his early influences of Mexican and Hawaiian music. “There are more people playing what is referred to as roots and blues than when I started out,” says Williams, “and the definition, for a lot of people, has broadened considerably.”

LET’S TALK TRASH

Use your bear smarts Did you know that during hibernation bears burn around 10 burgers worth of fuel a day? It’s no wonder that in the months leading up to their big sleep, our furry friends are ravenously consuming up to 20,000 calories per day. Bears can smell up to one mile away. Minimizing odours goes a long way to keep them at a safe distance. You may be aware that stinky garbage cans and compost piles can easily become a bear buffet, but did you know recycling bins, bird feeders or even piled grass clippings can attract their interest? Here are some top bear attractants and suggestions for managing them: • Chicken coop: keep feed area clean and store feed in bear-resistant

containers. Use electric fencing, if possible. • Garbage: be sure to compost any organics. Wait until morning of collection to put it out. Store in bear-resistant containers or locations. • Pet food: keep indoors or in bearresistant containers. • Compost: decrease odour by avoiding the inclusion of meat, fish, bones, dairy, grains, cooked food scraps and grease or oil. Layer dead leaves, shredded cardboard/newspaper or wood shavings each time you add kitchen scraps. Aerate the compost pile regularly. • Fruit-bearing trees and plants: surround with an electric fence. Remove ripe or fallen fruit. Donate to

local charities or process the abundant harvest. • Bird feeders: only place outside when bird food is not abundant (November to March). • Grass clippings: add to your compost pile. • Barbecue: clean barbecue and brushes after each use. • Recycling: keep unwashed recycling indoors until collection day. Once a bear is attracted to a food source, it will often habitually return. WildSafe BC recommends installing an electric fence as the best prevention method for return visitors. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

Q: I was injured in a motor vehicle collision and have been told there is a private insurer involved. What does that mean? A: While ICBC continues to hold the monopoly in BC for basic compulsory auto insurance, optional insurance can be purchased through private companies. This means you could be dealing with two different insurers on your claim, who sometimes do not have the same goals and agendas. If you have been injured in an accident, please contact our office.

Indoor Composting on a Budget: Bokashi Fermentation

Registered holistic nutritionist and fermentation expert Kitty Clemens (Pro-Active Nutrition) will teach participants about the Bokashi indoor fermentation system. Bokashi is a Japanese word that means “fermented organic matter.” This method of composting allows for the additions of meat, fish and dairy without attracting rodents and flies or producing odours. You will see an active Bokashi bucket and learn how to make your own Bokashi system from scratch, including creative ways to produce the necessary micro-organisms to activate your bucket. Workshop attendance is FREE. Contact letstalktrashteam@gmail.com with any questions. No preregistration is required.

1010 Announcements SENIOR CITIZENS ASSOCIATION OF BC BRANCH #49 – POWELL RIVER

Douglas John Lucas

Congratulations to Keith W. Staines of Powell River, winner of the Nissan Micra car raffle draw held on September 3, 2016.

May 8, 1953 - August 28, 2016

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Doug after a long battle with liver disease. He is survived by his daughter Jessica, stepson Christopher, brothers Rob (Anne) and Richard (Paula), nieces, great-nephews and many extended family members and friends. Doug enjoyed many varied interests, from drag racing and photography to anything related to boats. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. No flowers or donations by request.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Chris Kern, loving husband, father and grandfather.

Ian Reid “Orchy” Orchiston

A Celebration of Life for Chris will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the Powell River Seniors Centre, 6792 Cranberry Street, Powell River, BC, from 1:30 PM - 5:30 PM.

January 6, 1949 – September 6, 2016

After fighting a brave and courageous battle with cancer, Ian left us too soon. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Patricia, daughter Jennifer Orchiston (Derrick Johnstone), son Graham Orchiston (Reasha Lillies), lovely granddaughter Eden, p r e c i o u s g r a n d s o n M a t t h e w Johnstone, brothers George Jr. (Janis) and Bob and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his mom Jessie and his dad George Sr. Born in Dundee, Scotland, Ian immigrated with his family to Powell River on August 12, 1957. He worked at many different jobs in his lifetime. He delivered The Province and Star Weekly all over Wildwood, shucked oysters for the Okeover Plant, picked salal, set pins at the Cranberry Bowling Alley, delivered groceries to the people of Sliammon and worked for Peter Toigo’s store in Wildwood. Ian later went off to join the Royal Canadian Navy onboard the HMCS Columbia for three years. Ian and Patricia were married February 14, 1970, at Moose Hall and shortly thereafter had two wonderful children. Orchy was the first coach of the Powell River girls soccer team. He coached boys youth soccer for some years, played on the first Villa soccer team and was a prolific goal scorer. He played baseball for the Papermakers, played darts, loved to dance and sing, engaged in many other sports and especially loved to fish. Ian owned and operated Malaspina Charters for many years and never came home empty-handed. Ian and Pat loved to camp with family and friends. They went out on their ATV with a picnic lunch and a fishing rod regularly. Another favourite pastime was picking mushrooms with his partner Jack Paterson; they always did well. Ian held the record for the largest number one pine in Powell River at three pounds. He worked at the mill for 39 years until he retired. He loved to hike and took up golf in his 50s, which quickly became a true passion; you could see him at the course almost every day. Ian belonged to the Moose, Carlson Community Club, Myrtle Point Golf Club, Powell River Salmon Society and ATV Club and was always ready to volunteer his services. A truly generous man, he helped family, friends and strangers alike. He was loved and will be missed. There’s a giant golf course waiting for you, my love. A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, September 20, at 2:30 pm at Carlson Community Club in the upper hall. No flowers by request, donations can be made to the Carlson Club in Ian’s memory.

Thank you to all who supported us in the car raffle. Thank you to all our volunteers.

Linda Kennedy July 7, 1949 - September 10, 2016

After a courageous and strong battle, faith allowed Linda to pass with dignity, surrounded by her family. God looked around his garden And found an empty place He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered, “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Linda enjoyed knitting, card making and many other hobbies she could put her artistic flare on. She brightened everyone’s day with her contagious smile, her openness and willingness to help. Linda is survived by her husband Jim, son Troy (Karen), daughter Tanya (Christian), sisters Dolly (Ron) Sullivan, Debbie (Don) Carlson and Paula (Alan) Ross, grandchildren Jordan, Deagon and Jerzi as well as nieces, nephews and many friends. A celebration of Linda’s life will be held Saturday, October 1, at 1 pm at Alano Club of Powell River, 5903 Arbutus Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon or Canadian Diabetes Association.
